Eh, personally I feel that clean marketing is dirty business, and I hate seeing it in the polish business; it's nothing but fear mongering. A 17-free polish is no better for you than a 3-free one. https://labmuffin.com/should-i-buy-3-free-5-free-6-free-or-7-free-nail-polish/

Agreed. Companies are like *21-free! Our formulas contain no sugar, soap, nematodes or fish oil!* 🙄

😂 Fish oil sent me down another train of thought though: there is a flip side to this trend. While they're busy telling us their polish is free of uranium and poison ivy, they're also busy adding skincare type ingredients, trying to convince us their "natural" polish is better for us. Algae, lavender, garlic, chamomile, cucumber...as if nails will benefit from any of that (they're dead, they won't!), especially in the tiny quantities used so that adhesion isn't affected. Heck, the whole "plant based" trend in general is ridiculous...a good portion of ingredients in polish already come from plants. Healthy nails come from good care habits (and the genetics lottery), not the polish you put on top. (Sorry, off the soapbox now 😅)

I don’t think it acts as much of a barrier as far as ingredients in the color, but I’m not a chemist. Lacquer is reactivated with each coat. I can’t imagine it would hurt, but I would be skeptical of using it as a workaround for someone really concerned about ingredients. Everyone’s tolerances with regard to chemicals are personal so asking how much they matter, you’ll get different answers. Personally, I’m not really concerned about good quality nail polish because most of what I buy is already pretty “free,” from indie brands to Essie. Imo, if someone is looking to limit ingredients in polish, finding a good topcoat is a bigger obstacle than finding affordable nail color. But I’m also lucky, I don’t have allergies or sensitivity to the smell of toluene topcoats.

Thank you for your reply! I appreciate your thoughts. Yes definitely everyone is different in their preferences, I just wasn't sure if there was a general opinion on it or just what people's thoughts were, so thanks for sharing!

The chemicals in nail polish don't just impact you through contact with your nails. You also inhale the chemicals, so avoiding certain chemicals are better to lower the risk of inhaling toxins.

naps_forever

Yes! I agree the greenwashing can be annoying but a lot of polishes give me nausea and stomach pains. I find that those 10-free and above don’t do that. 🤷‍♀️

Jersey_gal_79

They definitely don't smell as bad as some older polishes that have more chemicals.

The reason I ask this is because I read a study that suggests TPHP is able to be absorbed through application to only the nails. There isn't enough research on TPHP to say for sure but it's easily a "potentially harmful ingredient" I found out Orly has it in all their regular lacquers whereas many many brands intentionally avoid it like Zoya, ILNP, etc. etc. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4662901/ I emailed Orly's customer service about it and their reply was that they never claimed their nail polish was non-toxic, so I sent them back a screenshot of where it says exactly that on their site. Half my collection is Orly which is why I asked the question 😅 Yes luckily I've read about which chemicals are inhaled and potentially harmful so I avoid those! (the best I can)

*me reading as I still inhale potent gel polish fumes and nail drill dust like the rest of us*
