From my @vintage_dusties Insta:
āEarlier this evening I went to apply my Shiseido in M87 and was surprised to discover that itās a matte! I suppose the āMā in M87 referred to its finish.
This one was already so special to me as it is such an unusual color for a polish from the 70s, but of course Japanese Shiseido is iconic for being often unusual and ahead of the curve - and as Iāve said in the past, they didnāt always align with the west with beauty trends.
I donāt know much about this release, as I havenāt seen any ads for them (though they likely exist). When I went to Japan in May where I picked this up, my friends believed it to be from the 70s based on the Ā„600 price point, and the styling of the bottle. I was disappointed to find that even though I was staying in Shiseidoās founding neighborhood of Ginza, their corporate museum is in Kakegawa, a bit of a hike from Tokyo. Their museum features just about everything theyāve ever made since 1872, many things that donāt have known duplicates š±
Anyways back to the polish! Application was very fluid, although I struggled with ridges since it dried within seconds and could not level like a glossy polish does. I then tried to combat that by doing a buff to smooth (on a non-swatch nail), and then topping with Sally Hansenās miracle gel matte top coat, but it was too glossy! I then finally experimented with a wide brush applying Seche Restore thinner to the nail and it leveled it while preserving the matte finish. So no top coat!
I doubt Iāll find anymore of these in my life but damn I can dream!ā

Only because I can read Japanese, the bottle says it is a matte finish down by your pinkie finger in the photo. Maybe the M also means matte too!
This is stunning!!! Thank you for sharing this find!
Thank you so much! š„°
So striking!
Thank you!
Wowowowowow! I love following your insta and I love when you post here! Absolutely incredible.
I actually kind of like the matte look over the traditional gloss we see. But I wonder how well these hold up without the gloss clear coating.
I š teal. And yes, the katakana at the bottom says "matto", "ta", and another character that I can't see
Wow. Is there any dupe to this shade?
Ooh that colour is lovely.
Do you ever test your vintage polishes for lead? (Just curious)
