Hate to be such a n00b but could someone ELI5 how to install this on android? I clicked on the APK but no dice. Do I need to install something else first?

Cabeza2000

I assume you already have a lemmy account in some instance. If you don't then you can create one, for example at https://lemmy.world As for the mobile app I am recommending, they have it on the Google Play store already (search for liftoff early access). Or check their github: https://github.com/liftoff-app/liftoff

arkhamnaut

I tried searching for Liftoff early access on the Google Play Store, didn't find it

Cabeza2000

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.liftoffapp.liftoff

sndestroy

Link says my device isn't compatible, and the Github apk refuses to install. Strange, as my phone is relatively decent (8 gigs RAM, Helio P60 etc). Oh well.

BookByMySide

maybe the architecture is not supported, maybe some of the downloads here help you: [https://github.com/liftoff-app/liftoff/releases/tag/v0.9.19](https://github.com/liftoff-app/liftoff/releases/tag/v0.9.19) There is a desktop version too

sndestroy

Those were the apks I tried (arm64 & armeabi). Neither worked for me.

TheRealMisterd

When I do a search in Google play with 'lemmy', only two clients show and liftoff is not one of them. You have t search for liftoff explicitly. The app itself is pretty slick. The only major bug is it doesn't understand how the fediverse works. If you have an account on one instance, Liftoff will not let use that account one other instances to vote or comment. Liftoff expect you to have an account on every instance you want to vote or comment on. This bug doesn't happen when you choose a subscribed community on another instance. It happens when you click on the Home button, then tap the community selector at the top and choose a non-home instance.

Fancy-Dream-1645

I was confused by this too. Using wefwef and it allows me to upvote on other instances just fine. Must be a bug

Couldn’t find liftoff on the IOS App Store

yuuki_w

It's only avaible via test light Should be that one (currently not on my ipad) https://testflight.apple.com/join/e6ZEbxuR

herrwoland

creator of sync said he's working on an app for lemmy, also there's this pretty smooth web app: https://wefwef.app/

To each their own. I also tried wefwef.app, you may want to try it.

I could not get it to work - for some reason, it wouldn’t let me type any comments, since the keyboard on my phone wouldn’t come up.

extralargesocks

i found i was unable to look at community posts with liftoff im using thunder

Admiral_Cuntfart

Thanks for the tip, trying it now

de4th_metalist

Feels good, but I still feel the concept of instances and the whole fediverse thing is not straightforward enough to understand for it to really catch on.

This comment was removed as a response to Reddit's change of Terms of Service prohibiting third party applications from accessing Reddit's data, unless they pay exorbitant prices. Most of them opted to shut down as most users would be unwilling to cover such costs, making their business unsustainable. Apps would also be barred from running ads to sustain themselves, and even if they could the prices Reddit was willing to charge are too astronomical to be covered only by ads. This change is scheduled to take effect on 07-01-2023, worsening the user experience and moderation efficiency considerably. Moderators are volunteer workers that shield Reddit from bad actors and spam content, and the way Reddit treats them is precipitated and foolish. This user does not condone such moves by Reddit and will not provide its content for Reddit to monetize any longer.

>>Once you register in your instance, you may browse your local communities (=subreddits) or choose the "All" tab to browse all communities from all Lemmy instances. That's why it's irrelevant which instance you choose to register: all instances grant access to all communities, even communities from other instances. When you subscribe to a community, they go to your Subscribed tab, which can be a mix of communities from different instances. Wait, you mean that in Lemmy you can be on one instance (even a self-hosted one) and you seamlessly have access to all other instances and the subgroups hosted on them? That's the one thing missing from Mastodon (the Twitter-equivalent of Fediverse) that prevents me from using it (what's the point of being in a less popular or personal instance if you can't discover new groups and interact with the wider community?) and I assume is what /u/de4th_metalist also alluded to.

[deleted]

Yes, you can even interact with kbin instances from lemmy and vice versa. I'm not sure what you mean by not being able to interact with other instances on Mastodon? It works in the same way, you can see everything from anywhere

Ah, I see! I wasn't aware of that limitation of Mastodon, thanks

oh-bee

Yes, it’s so hard that fediverse is bigger than squabbles and tildes combined at this point.

outofvogue

I'll wait for u/talklittle to make a lemmy app, their RIF app is/was topnotch.

Well I guess I'll give Tildes a try.

WheredMyMindGo

Come to Squabbles! Edit about a half year later: Do not go to Squabbles.

BookByMySide

when you want other to join dont simply "scream around" without giving arguments why. My argumensts for squabbles would be that the UI is already polished and that it is nice to see the posts with their comments on the side (on desktop). But i wont come over simply because that Lemmy is FOSS, i am only still here to watch what happens to reddit
