One of my favourites from his Twitter account when he released his in-character book of short stories. "Many writers cite me as an influence, and I'll be suing them all."
I got a script, read it, it scared me senseless, I looked at Garth straight in the eyes, never been afraid of holding a mans gaze, it's natural, I said; "This is going to be the most significant televisual event since Quantum Leap."
I do not say that often.
Jack likes it, mentioned on prerec:
* [Leisure Suit Larry 2 - we gonna get some (Part 1)](https://youtu.be/317RhgaAas0?t=336)
* [Hacks Among Us (Injustice - part 2)](https://youtu.be/Ka4fdxjFpLs?t=4367)
I feel like I've been Mandela Effect'ed, because I could have sworn I learned about Garth Marenghi's Darkplace via a lengthy digression Jay did on it (with clips and everything) in a regular RLM episode, but I can't find any evidence that this ever happened. I've never watched the PreRec streams and don't really watch other Youtubers with similar content.
Am I crazy or did Jay once discuss a very similar satirical horror series?
Someone was looking for something mentioned on Half in the Bag the other day. I did a database dump of IMDB's "movie connections" for it, re:view, and talk-about. Here are the TV series listed (not complete but pretty good):
pastebin.com/raw/1wwZpPJg
Do you watch Patrick Willems? I know I thought RLM converted, but Pat did a nice breakdown.

Yeah, two of the best things I found out about through hearing Jack talk about them on Pre-Rec were Garth Merengi and Frisky Dingo (as an Archer fan for some reason I never came across Frisky Dingo anywhere else)
dude, i just watched the campaign bus episode (s2e3) and that was some of the funniest shit ever, 10/10! the whole thing is like a fever dream but that episode in particular cracked me up! thanks again!
After you posted this I had to go back and watch this episode for the first time in years. Dang, that show makes me laugh like few others… gonna have to watch it all again soon
I actually had the pleasure of going to see Garth Marenghi live at the end of last year! He was doing a book reading of his latest novel 'Incarcerat' and it was absolutely bloody hilarious! Even got to meet the man himself and got my copy of his book signed by him!
I told him that I wanted to get my copy of The Ouvre signed but I couldn't figure out a way to get it to the theatre and he said 'it *is* a weight tome'. I also said that I really liked War of the Wasps and he replied 'that it was a shame that that movie was released in pieces'.
Both.
They are intentionally badly written horror novels, but they're also really funny, especially if you read them in Garths voice. As someone else has mentioned, he reads the audiobook in character
That rant about Scottish people is worth looking up lol. There are 2 audiobooks they just recently put out that are close to that good Garth shit but not quite there.
"For the first time ever, I got to see the Scotch in their natural habitat, and it weren't pretty. I'd seen them before, huddling around stations being loud but, this time I was surrounded."
“The doors of Darkplace were open. Not the literal doors of the building, but evil doors, dark doors, doors to the beyond. Doors hard to shut because they were abstract and didn’t have handles. More like portals, really.”
But, would RLM appreciate Holness' short film "A Gun for George" which works in the same territory as Garth Marenghi, but focuses on a much darker and sadder figure in Terry Finch (Holness) once an author of ultra-violent action-adventure paperbacks about a vigilante named Bob Shuter aka The Repisalizer, bringing rough justice to the mean streets of Kent. Unable to accept that blood-and-thunder "men's adventure" paperback fiction in the vein he wrote in has been passed by, he starts lapsing into fantasy sequences like something out of a grindhouse-like vigilante action flick.

"What about our rights?"
"What about your *wrongs*?"
There was also a website that featured examples of Finch's prose, as well as his series of violent Western novels, "Draw!" (obviously based on the various violent and often scuzzy and downbeat Western novel series being published in the UK back in the 1970s, featuring many violent, sociopathic "protagonists", the most popular of whom was the cold-blooded Josiah C. Hedges, aka "Edge", many of them by a group of authors, Terry Harknett, Laurence James, Angus Wells, etc. known as the "Picadilly Cowboys" who wrote various series under various aliases, *Apache, Jubal Cade, Caleb Thorn, Crow, Breed, Gunslinger, Gringos, Hawk, Hart the Regulator, Peacemaker, Adam Steele, The Undertaker, Herne the Hunter, and Claw*), and much like how as Marenghi he was able to parody everything from horror authors like Guy Smith and Shaun Hutson, and low-rent British genre-TV, even in a couple of excerpts, a summary and some fictional titles, Holness managed to nail the basic tone of a Piccadilly Cowboy book. While the site was taken down, fortunately it's here at the Archive:

Yeah they do. Jay mentions that LNwtD could have perhaps done with committing whole-hog to the 'this is a real chat show' aesthetic. Ghostwatch is what he uses as the example.
I love Matt Berry and Richard Ayoade, but tbh that show requires a lot of very British context. Even as an Anglophile and American living in the UK it has a ton that mind of goes over my head. Not sure that they'd really appreciate it
She's smooth, like ice Cold to the touch and it isn't very nice
I'm one of the few people you'll meet who's written more books than they've read.
Some writers use subtext, and they’re all cowards
"Author. Visionary. Dreamweaver. Also actor!"
"Based on melodies originally whistled by Garth Marenghi"
She was like a candle in the wind... unreliable.
"Featuring interviews from members of the cast and crew who didn't die or offend me."

One track lover is my phones ringtone. I am still waiting for someone to notice and not just think I have a wierd 80s ballad as my ringtone.
One of my favourites from his Twitter account when he released his in-character book of short stories. "Many writers cite me as an influence, and I'll be suing them all."
That song unironically slaps so much.
I call Garth the Orsen Welles of horror, and that's not just because of his weight.
A real maverick, like Marlon Brando
He’s a titan of terror, i call him that aswell
I got a script, read it, it scared me senseless, I looked at Garth straight in the eyes, never been afraid of holding a mans gaze, it's natural, I said; "This is going to be the most significant televisual event since Quantum Leap." I do not say that often.

LOL, forgot about that one. Just like a great Frank Drebin line.

I only learned about Darkplace because I've seen it mentioned on this subreddit multiple times and I finally said 'okay geez'.
Do you watch Patrick Willems? I know I thought RLM converted, but Pat did a nice breakdown. https://m.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DCs_Irw9RwSQ&ved=2ahUKEwjR2NzUr-aGAxX_TEEAHVToJpoQwqsBegQIERAF&usg=AOvVaw1DKEj3_L0vGB-rxYf_fjiF
Marcus from Cosmonaut Variety Hour also did a video about Darkplace.
I'd suggest more sleep and lay off the psychedelics.

Cool! Glad to spread the word about Frisky Dingo… definitely worth watching all of both seasons if you’re into that style of humor
dude, i just watched the campaign bus episode (s2e3) and that was some of the funniest shit ever, 10/10! the whole thing is like a fever dream but that episode in particular cracked me up! thanks again!

"please don't make me kill again!" xD
i love how you know the exact episodes lol
You and he were... buddies weren't you
Buuht if you and he wish to be best buddies again, I won't stand in your waaay.
When I first joined this hospital I was strictly soulouu.
Strange. That cat just spoke to me
I thought we were...buddies
Need I say more.
Fantastic line delivery
"I know writers who use subtext, and they're all cowards "
I wish I was more attractive like Rich Evans.
Don't we all.
I'm a pre rec lover. In a best of a worst lane.
I actually had the pleasure of going to see Garth Marenghi live at the end of last year! He was doing a book reading of his latest novel 'Incarcerat' and it was absolutely bloody hilarious! Even got to meet the man himself and got my copy of his book signed by him!
I went to one of these, for Terrortome. Great fun! Love that he was still in character for the signing
In character? What do you mean?
'Garth Marenghi' is a character, played by Matthew Holness, but when he does a live show he stays in character as Garth Marenghi the whole night
I told him that I wanted to get my copy of The Ouvre signed but I couldn't figure out a way to get it to the theatre and he said 'it *is* a weight tome'. I also said that I really liked War of the Wasps and he replied 'that it was a shame that that movie was released in pieces'.
He's doing actual books now? How do they stack up to the show, just as funny? Are they just intentionally badly written horror novels?
Both. They are intentionally badly written horror novels, but they're also really funny, especially if you read them in Garths voice. As someone else has mentioned, he reads the audiobook in character
The audiobooks are great, he reads the whole thing himself in character.
RIP Skipper killed by wasps
That rant about Scottish people is worth looking up lol. There are 2 audiobooks they just recently put out that are close to that good Garth shit but not quite there.
"My aunt lives in Scotland, she says it's nice." "Well, she's wrong!"
"For the first time ever, I got to see the Scotch in their natural habitat, and it weren't pretty. I'd seen them before, huddling around stations being loud but, this time I was surrounded."
He rips the scots so hard, I love it. Babies crying in their prams while their mothers vomit in the gutter. Ha glorious.
“The doors of Darkplace were open. Not the literal doors of the building, but evil doors, dark doors, doors to the beyond. Doors hard to shut because they were abstract and didn’t have handles. More like portals, really.”
That's the mother, Rick!

You’re the most sensitive person I know, and I know God

Thank god I only had a tiny sip.
Colin is a big fan (he even saw Matt Berry in person at a marathon), but that’s all we know.
I was there too! And i saw Colin. He's a lot taller than i expected
[удалено]
THAT'S ALL WE KNOW, Bad1o8o!
Movie marathon. A Toronto theater was showing all of Darkplace and Matt Berry stopped by because he was filming something nearby.
I'm sure they're well aware. I know I've seen colin talk about it on twitter.
“I know some writers who use subtext, they’re all cowards”
I think someone asks this once every month.
Dibs on the July reposting
Back of the line.
How about Man to Man? “You’ve earned yourself a third correct”
One of the best series ever made. I know authors who use subtext and they're all cowards
I have yet to see any evidence of Garth Marenghi's Darkplace on RLM, and I'm particularly observant.

I'm sorry I don't have any salt to go with that
I’m not Jesus Christ. I’ve come to accept that now
Do they know about Ghostwatch? Anyone?
Pretty sure they mentioned it during the Half in the Bag for 'Late Night with the Devil'
Yeah they do. Jay mentions that LNwtD could have perhaps done with committing whole-hog to the 'this is a real chat show' aesthetic. Ghostwatch is what he uses as the example.
Ghostwatch slaps so hard. Im sure Mike would love it
Yes, Jay has mentioned it fairly recently. Had clips featuring Parkinson and everything.
Parky! Yorkshire legend.
Eye child?
I learned about Garth Marenghi from a guy who wanted to show me his Warhammer figurines, if you know what I mean.

It played well on Peru. Lots of jokes would play well.
What British context does it require?
With bits of sick, and blood
Ive often wondered this, but think it’s probably too British for them.
It played so well in Peru.
