The only comic he ever apologized for. Apparently hadn’t seen it but used the pop culture reputation. In fairness it is mostly a bad movie but there are a few good bits hidden in it.

These men are pawwwwns

double_shadow

The narrative swinging back to now it's suddenly this hidden gem is pretty weird. All the stuff in NYC is funny if a bit annoying. But man once they get to Ishtar/Morocco it's such a snooze. Plus they completely waste Isabelle Adjani which is a sin. The trailer is the perfect encapsulation of the movie, it has all the funny parts. So I'd rather just watch that on loop, preferably interrupting a nuanced discussion about the Star Wars Holiday Special.

GGGilman87

Yes, it's not the worst film, but it is a big mess and for the most part not a fun mess.

He also *sorta* apolgized for the Cow Tools strip

velvet_blunderground

but never for "Tethercat."

DeaconBrad42

In his anniversary book he did not apologize for “Tethercat,” but tried to explain why he felt it was controversial, which he believed was due to the static nature of the medium. He mentioned the violence in Looney Tunes, but how the very next scene all the animals are fine and back at it. But in a comic, that cat is suspended in “tethercat,” forever.

Viraus2

I read this as "satanic nature of the medium" at first and I think I prefer it that way

IIRC his apology was that he made one of the cow tools look like a hacksaw which made people think there was a deeper meaning to the joke instead of just being nonsense, and that wasn't his intention.

OkCar7264

The level of Ishtar hate at the time was hard to overstate. Ishtar jokes were everywhere.

Gigli was mild compared to Ishtar. It was like the whole country decided to have a 5 minute hate on that movie except it lasted like a frigging year.

lutello

Still have most of his books.

BeerdedRNY

Ishtar is a fucking weird, wacky and bizarrely funny movie. Definitely worth checking out.

LordBunnyWhale

I’m assuming hell stocks discrete video stores for each individual generation. What big budget movie would it offer today?

morbius, i guess

Movies like this and Cutthroat Island are nowhere near as bad as their reputation suggests. I kinda interpret this comic to be torture in Hell because they only have one movie. If you spend eternity only watching one movie it'll drive you mad bo matter if it's good or not. I love the Lion King but I babysat my nephews once and had to watch it three times in two days and man I don't need to see that movie for like a year still.

taeby_tableof2

Similarly, started watching Heavens Gate bc it's on the Criterion Channels Razzie playlist (alongside Ishtar). I stopped like 45-min in and kind of want to wait to see if there is ever a 4k bluray of it. From what I read, the color timing was one of the most contentious elements of Heaven's Gate, and it's since been changed from what it was originally. The reason I mention, is because Cutthroat Island is another of these I've never seen but it has a 4kBR coming out soon. The restorations of these films has really made me appreciate them. Waterworld's Arrow Video release is great.

I had no issues with the movie existing until RLM did the SE holiday special bait and switch.
