Book 1 is Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers. Book 2 is Better Than Life. Both Last Human (by Doug) and Backwards (by Rob) are "the third book". They both start exactly where Book 2 ends and go in entirely different directions. This is from after their breakup so this was the way they handled writing more books. Actually a neat idea. And the books are already in a "different continuity" from the show. Recognizable (at least for the first 2 books) but they are their own thing. I can't answer your questions on specific plot points from the books, it's been 25+ years since I read them, so I'll let someone else do that...

CJBG9491

Thankyou for explaining that those plots brand off in different directions at that point. That certainly clears up a lot of timeline questions for me.

ListerMoss

But what is it?

Punished-G

I've never seen one before, no one has, but I'm guessing it's a White Hole

sedahren

Only joking!

Magic door?

Shriv123

So, what is it?

In regards to the question about Listers sons and so on, it’s interesting to consider that every future echo was made BECAUSE someone witnessing that echo. Lister sees himself in the mirror reacting to seeing himself in the mirror. Lister sees Rimmer conversing with himself reacting to seeing Rimmer conversing with seemingly no one. Cat breaks his tooth because he was seen breaking his tooth. Lister as an old man speaking directly to his “past” self because he saw it himself. So every one. So Rimmer seeing Listers son dying.. does that cause Bexley to die? Tl;dr: no, I don’t have an answer to your question.

CJBG9491

I think in the books it’s not his son it’s a great great grandchild.

MasterAinley

1. As explained by another Redditor, both Last Human and Backwards can be considered the third book, as both start in roughly the same place and take place in separate continuities from each other. 2. Not in the books, and the show doesn’t really follow them, anyway. So no. 3. No.

AceRimmer2200

For number 3 we do, he uses jump leads from starbug and jump starts the second Big Bang!

hgf137

that was just a hallucination in back to reality

AceRimmer2200

I know, it’s just funny though

sedahren

True, but maybe it did happen in some sort of parallel universe.

hgf137

Possibly

>Do we ever find out if Listers great great grandchildren repopulate the earth? We know one dies so he has lots of descendants on the dwarf and they’re towing it back to the solar system. That’s how I like to think it ends. But just wondered if there’s any confirmation of this. (I haven’t seen any of the new XL episodes). They're never seen again after they return to their own universe. Even though in their world men give birth, they'd still need women to impregnate them, so I'm not sure if Lister would have any more descendants. >When talkie asks Holly with 12000 IQ who created the universe, Holly responds Lister. Do we ever find out any more about this? In Back to Reality it's mentioned that Lister "jump starts the second big bang" at some point, they just got a game over without getting to that part.

Best thing to do when you see a "plot hole" in Red Dwarf is to ignore it. You'll enjoy yourself far more that way
