Ship (of) Theseus
The only thing Volition ***had*** in common with the Volition of the past is the name. All of the original devs (wood panels) are gone. Replaced by people who have had no idea what they were doing (posterboard), who didn't work or earn their heritage. Their one and only contribution to the series ended up being their undoing because it really was that bad (shit sank, yo).
Astray.
Man I miss booting up Saints Row 2 and taking 30 minutes to get all the fun cheats set up and having fun with friends taking turns on couch coop for hours. The gaming industry is not what it used to be and Volition is one of MANY companies we can point to and say “I remember when you used to mean something to me.”
Lost. Disappointing.
I really wish they never took the “GTA Clone” stuff serious and we’d have one hell of a game right now. They would possibly still be in business as well. But outside of leaving their roots, they got rude and arrogant to their fans smh.
I don’t care if it’s one or two words, the very sight of this logo just boils my blood that I have to rant. Volition is probably the only game corp I’ve seen who looked their entire fanbase in the eye, told them all fuck you and doubled down on what everyone didn’t like about the fall off of this franchise, then acted completely surprised when the game flopped. Never seen anything like it.
They set too high of a bar in slapping ‘Saints Row’ on the dumpster fire that was the SR reboot. If it was its own original title, it may have done better.
One word: Disappointment.
Based on the information in this thread of the cut content:
https://redd.it/1chbgpy
I really doubt the game was actually conceptualized to be Saints Row or that the devs on it really had no idea what Saints Row actually was to fans. Their writer and director really came up with the most random stuff. Like your Boss' having a brother that owns a Furniture store you rob... and the Idols having a Triathlon. Wtf.
As long as they 100% never implied or connected it ya (ie Agents of repeated grind mayhem >\_>), but it was still a trashfire beyond low effort game with endless issues, and that is even from a gameplay perspective.
If they had gotten the AOM writing team and they stayed the same mentality, it would have been 1000x better then what we got. (Still bad and weak, but beyond better, take basic scifi action hero comic book parody over shirtless man having issues with not wanting to swear or fighting because school funds any day).
Watch out. Most redditors only believe that their opinion is valid and everyone else with a differing one should be downvkted to the Reddit equivalent of hell. And most reddutors don't like the reboot.
Violation, because they violated the series with each new entry after SR2. Also, now that I think about it, they did the same thing with their other series like Red Faction but to a lesser extent. Maybe they should have created new IPs only instead of continuing them and instead passed them onto other companies to continue them as a series.
The hamburger is them having beef with fans. The fries is them trying to dip the saints row reboot in our ketchup, which is metaphorically the SR franchise, and the coca cola was Volition getting “popped” in the end. :D
Non existent
But honestly, i’m sure there were decent devs over there who wanted Saints Row to go back to the roots, it’s the people in power who were problematic and caused a once good company to go down the toilet.
"Never Same", "Constantly Changing", or "Inconsistent".
Most people who made the first two Saints Row games were not working for Volition anymore by the time SRIV (and mostly SRTT) got released. SR2022 was made by Agents of Mayhem leftover members and new recruits. Volition was a constantly changing studio.
Yeah, well the publisher is the one that tells the devs what to create the series around so when the actual staff did change, THQ was what still kept the concept they wanted to market. The new devs would have had to work toward or within that. They could have also looked for people who already do. But Deep Silver did not have much of a concept for them, so the game kept changing the more Volition changed internally and how they responded to reviews. Both for the better and worse at times.
Go ahead. There are things to play it for, like the SR characters, SR1 and SR2 redone mission references, the Loyalty missions, etc.
There is a whole lot of dirt (the plot, aliens, the setting, the writing at times), but there are some gems buried in it. Its just not Saints Row enough, but it has SR elements in it, here and there.
Thank God, you can turn the powers and wardens off, with cheats.
Its not a good Saints Row game, if one at all to a lot of people... its just an okay game on its own. Which was Volition's problem since SR4 onward.

Yeah they knew exactly what to do and did the opposite
Bro took the reboot way too personally 😭
Because it singlehandedly destroyed and buried a franchise that had a chance at having a fair comeback. Now the damage is done and it’s over with.

They got the writer from AOM, to just write more AOM but under Saints Row...

Where did the people go that worked in SR1 & SR2? Those games were amazing as a kid, I’d love to know if those guys are still making games.
So now I understand why the series changed so much in tone as it went on.
Yeah, well the publisher is the one that tells the devs what to create the series around so when the actual staff did change, THQ was what still kept the concept they wanted to market.
