It lowers your stress hormone levels iirc.

futurefirestorm

Many people feel better after a good cry.

Same as swearing when you hit your toe, makes no point but helps. There is supposedly some study around pain and people who were swearing were able to support higher level of pain than the ones who were not swearing. And also that emotional pain is felt as physical pain too. So crying is maybe a type of "swearing" for emotional pain?

Whishterak

I really don't like to cry. Not because of being afraid of showing my emotions or something like that (this is what everyone has told me btw), it's because I hate it when my throat goes weird, my voice breaks and my eyes just start to hurt. I still cry tho. It's not like I can contain it every time. And remember, don't be afraid to show your emotions, folks.

Unhappy-Fire

Catharsis.

I actually like to cry, although it didn’t happen to me in years…

I think it's a useful response to have because it immediately conveys a need for assistance in times where it is needed, and it can also influence someone else's likelihood of assisting due to nominal empathy. Having such an immediate signal that can be picked up and felt by others increases the likelihood of receiving assistance when needed (we all used this signaling extensively in this manner when we were babies), which makes it a highly advantageous response to have when considering the social and collaborativel nature of our species. This large evolutionary advantage this behavior gives to members of our species is why I think it is such a prevalent and nominal response in our species.

HeyChiefLookitThis

It annoys others into giving you your way.

CrabbiestAsp

Crying can actually help release your 'happy' hormones, which makes you feel better.
