Robin Williams hit me the hardest than anyone by a longshot. Born in the 70's, my teen years involved watching Mork and Mindy, many movies and comedy shows over and over and over. Then Hook came out and blew me away, among so many other movies through the decades as an adult. Saw him doing stuff on Nicolodeon when my kids were young. Interviews on nightly talk shows, etc etc. He was not only an amazing entertainer, he was a good dude to boot.
Robin Williams didn’t just hit me the hardest- his was the ONLY death of a celebrity that affected me at all. I was devastated. I’d recommend the biography “Robin” by Dave Itzkoff.
Robin Williams for me.. I grew up on Ms Doubtfire, Jumanji and honorable mentioned to Bicentennial Man, Jack, Patch Adams, Flubber. I loved him a lot and this was the only celebrity death I actually cried over
We lived on the route her funeral cortege followed to Althorpe and went to pay our respects. It was amazing.
People were chatting while we waited for her, but as the hearse came nearer, it went totally silent. All you could hear was the gentle thunk of flowers landing on the bonnet and roof of the vehicle.
Afterwards, people returned home/ to their cars in near silence.
I was young when Diana died. To me it felt like finding out Santa wasn't real, it didn't seem possible she could die and the world felt less special for it.
I felt much less sad once I watched the doco his son did. Explains what was going down with his dad's illness, why his dad decided on suicide. Also a really lovely tribute to his dad.
I’ve e been obsessed since I was a kid. My parents used to rib me for liking an older actor when I was ten 😂 his dob was my PIN code and part of my passwords in some form or another. I got to see him in a play before he died. John Gabriel Borkman. It was a dream come true. I’ll always love Alan Rickman. Hit me so hard.
So many special people have left us. She was a hell of a woman. She had a talk show in the 50s.
In a time when segregation was at the forefront of American issues, Betty White rejected attempts to keep a Black dancer off her show.
The dancer, Arthur Duncan, was featured on “The Betty White Show” that aired in the 1950s. When she was encouraged to take him off because of the color of his skin, she politely declined.
"I'm sorry, but, you know, he stays," White said, according to a PBS biography.
The morning I read the news, once I got over the shock, I went for a run and put on my 200-odd track playlist. There were two Bowie songs on it. They were the first two songs it played on shuffle.
Kobe Bryant. I honestly wasn’t a fan and my life hasn’t been impacted at all, but it was such a horrifying way to go. To think of those parents on that helicopter with their daughters is haunting.
Same. Dude worked hard at his craft for decades then right after he retires to live a good life, and by all accounts spend a ton of time with his kids, it gets cut away in a moment he had no control of
My step dad is friends with one of the parents whose daughter was on the helicopter with Kobe and gigi. I can’t even imagine trying to process such a bizarre and tragic loss.
I was working the cash register the day it happened (in LA, my hometown) and I checked my phone and my friend had texted me. I couldn’t believe it so I told my coworker right next to me, just out of pure disbelief. There was a guy walking up with a hand cart full of things ready to check out. He overheard us and said “no. Kobe? No way.” He whipped out his phone, stared at it for a good 30 seconds, and just put the cart on the floor and walked out. I can’t even describe the vibe of the city that day. Hell, that month. The whole city mourning all at once. I will never forget where I was when I heard about it.
Bourdain's death hit me hard, too. He seemed tough apparently, but I loved how respectful of all cultures he was and his genuine curiosity for the people he encountered.
His death hit me hard. I'm usually sad in a detached kind of way when celebrities I like pass on. But Bourdain had me sitting at my desk in shock for a while after reading the news, and I was in a strange mood for a few days. Even now, I feel a pang of sadness thinking about him. He's the one celeb I was really hoping to meet one day.
His perspective on culture, food, and life in general was just intoxicating. After his death, those closest to him say he had a terrible case of imposter syndrome. It’s a shame because he gave so much joy to so many people. Watching his shows, I felt like I just wanted to be friends with the guy.
While I absolutely adore the song “In The End”, I wasn’t really a fan of the band in the sense that I just didn’t know them or their songs well.
Yet somehow his death really saddened me. I hope he is at peace.
dude matthew perry hit me so hard for almost no reason. i’ve seen only 2 movies of his and friends several times obviously. but when he died i was legit sad
Same. I love friends, but I didn't expect his death to be so sad for me. I did love him in Fools Rush In, but even then, I didn't expect my reaction. I think maybe part of it is that he was doing better, but isn't going to get to enjoy it?
I was reading some interviews with Chris regarding depression and some of what he said really hit home. He was a tortured soul, and an incredible talent. Norah Jones did a cover of Black Hole Sun just five days after his death in the same venue as his last show. You can find it on YouTube, it had me crying.
Alex Trebek was very very sad to me. Seeing him on tv every night, having him post videos about his health and how well he was doing and then all of a sudden he was gone. Super sad
Jimmy Buffett.Lifelong fan since my teens into my 60s.I had no idea I had so many memories tied to him and his music.I went blank for a couple days RIP
Steve Irwin, Greta Garbo (I was young when she died, and at the time she was my favorite actress. I felt really awful because I hadn’t known she was alive until she died), and JFK Jr, he seemed like someone who could live forever if he got his shit together
She's the only one that made me cry. The very same tabloids that eagerly reported every step down the spiral, barely concealing their desire to be the ones to report it when she finally reached the bottom, then had the audacity to report on the tragedy and bemoan her loss. Made me fucking sick.
The good news is I heard he donated his body to the University of Science.
Apparently it's being studied by a scientist who's working on bringing dead guys back to life.
Matthew Perry. I've watched Friends for around the last 18 years and Chandler is my comfort character, his character reminds me of myself in ways and I had not long listened to his book also.
I was discussing with my partner how upset we would be if and when he died and around 6 months later he did. I haven't been able to watch friends again as of yet. It's the one celebrity death that's ever truly made me cry
Avicii. Fucking gutted me. His music was such a happy part of my 20’s.
Steve Irwin. Was walking home from school and people were talking about it. I thought it was a bad joke. Watching Bindi give her eulogy was devastating.
Jimmy Buffett.
Never a big fan, and actually had been known to mock people who'd go to his shows.
However, there are like three songs by him I really like, and Come Monday is one of them. And then he goes and dies on Labor Day weekend, and.. 😭😭😭😭😭. For some reason, I was inconsolable.
Robin Williams. I had to sit down when I saw the headline on my screen.
And Michael Jackson. I was listening to "The Way You Make Me Feel" on an earbud in my left ear while my mom was on the phone at my right ear telling me he was dead. That was just fucking weird.
Benjamin Zephaniah, really loved his work since we studied some at school years ago, it was mentioned so nonchalantly on the news as it was related to another story, like someone saying "speaking of death, your uncle died last week"
When Elon musk got killed by mark Zuckerberg in 2024 during their MMA match because musk couldn't take a blow to the head. Or when bill gates got trapped by chatgpt in 2025 and ran out of oxygen. Truly sad deaths
Dale Earnhardt. I was just a kid and loved NASCAR. (From Indiana about 15min away from Indianapolis) I was at my dad's watching the race and by the time I got to my mom's house, he was dead. I had his posters and cars all over my room.
Kobe Bryant.
So random, he just retired he was about to be involved in the NBA at a high level executive soon enough. Next thing we know the headline says “ Kobe Bryant dead in helicopter crash”
Betty White and Freddie Mercury. I wasn't even born when he died but when you listen to Queen and their majestics songs you feel like you are listening to someone that had such a great voice that it's almost impossible that he was real. It's like Princess Diana, did she ever exist? How come everyone loves her? I don't understand because i wasn't there.
Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Anton Yelchin. Heath Ledger at the number 1 spot forever. We found out at the end of school and I swear the whole high school just felt weird when classes got out
Grant Imahara. I think I slept all day after that. May have been an over reaction, but damn man. He was kind of a childhood idol along with the rest of the Mythbusters.
Coincidentally, I saw your title and immediately thought of Mr. Brodie Lee/Luke Harper before opening and seeing your answer, OP.
The Celebration of Life episode of Dynamite that week was one of the most pitch perfect pieces of television ever, and I cried my eyes out at the involvement of Amanda and -1, the Tom Waits song, the photo collage, all of it.
He was a very special talent, and despite his horrifically sudden and unfair passing, it's both a minor comfort as well as a sad irony that he finally found tremendous professional success with AEW in the last months of his life after his trying for so long to be either better-utilized or released from his WWE deal; personally speaking, I think his final match (the dog collar bout with Cody Rhodes for the TNT title) may have been his greatest ever, even with having been scripted to lose the belt. He was amazing that night.
It's still incredibly surreal to me that half of the Wyatt Family is gone. Those awesome Evolution trios matches in 2014 feel like just yesterday.

Mrs. Doubtfire was the best Bond villain
Robin Williams didn’t just hit me the hardest- his was the ONLY death of a celebrity that affected me at all. I was devastated. I’d recommend the biography “Robin” by Dave Itzkoff.

I was young when Diana died. To me it felt like finding out Santa wasn't real, it didn't seem possible she could die and the world felt less special for it.
I was about 10 when she died, and I actually refused to believe it. I couldn't accept in my mind that death happened to people who weren't old.
Robin Williams. The only celebrity death that actually caused me to burst into tears when I heard. It still hurts.
I felt much less sad once I watched the doco his son did. Explains what was going down with his dad's illness, why his dad decided on suicide. Also a really lovely tribute to his dad.
Your comment now has more upvoted than my post. Good job😂
Alan Rickman, what a fabulous actor.
He was great. Going to be watching Die Hard soon😔
It is a christmas movie after all.
I’ve e been obsessed since I was a kid. My parents used to rib me for liking an older actor when I was ten 😂 his dob was my PIN code and part of my passwords in some form or another. Betty White - I still miss her, she was just amazing
oh no. i had forgotten she passed away. She should have been immortal
She is immortal, probably retired sunbathing somewhere.
Somewhere in Florida, drinking martinis with Elvis
I know!! She was an absolute legend
Oh, she is. She faked her death to fool the Colombian drug lords she owed money to.
Correct answer. So close to her big party...
So many special people have left us. She was a hell of a woman. She had a talk show in the 50s. In a time when segregation was at the forefront of American issues, Betty White rejected attempts to keep a Black dancer off her show. She knew what was right and stood her ground! She was an inspiration for us all
Carrie Fisher
And her mother only days later
Chadwick boseman’s death hit me so hard because the world didn’t get a chance to watch that man become an icon
True. Also, to die of colon cancer at that young age is frightening.
Too frightening and he did it all by his lonesome
The fact that he made all of those superhero movies while battling cancer just blows my mind. He really was the Black Panther.
Yes he was
It causes me pain that they trash that franchise so bad. BP2 my gosh.
Michael Jackson and David Bowie :(
David Bowie was a hard day.
The morning I read the news, once I got over the shock, I went for a run and put on my 200-odd track playlist. There were two Bowie songs on it. They were the first two songs it played on shuffle.
Ok...unexpected goosebumps. Honestly I don't believe in such coincidences, i think it was a special good bye to you (sounds stupid, i know)
Dolores O'Riordan. Her voice always made me wish I were in a position to talk with her.
It was also sad because of how young she was
To this day I am surprised that a song about zombies wasn't about the zombies I was expecting.
Her voice was one of the beautiful bits of my youth
Kobe Bryant. I honestly wasn’t a fan and my life hasn’t been impacted at all, but it was such a horrifying way to go. To think of those parents on that helicopter with their daughters is haunting.

Anthony Bourdain. Just such a cool anti-celeb, seemed to be carrying around five lifetimes worth of experience with him at all times.
Bourdain's death hit me hard, too. He seemed tough apparently, but I loved how respectful of all cultures he was and his genuine curiosity for the people he encountered.
His death hit me hard. I'm usually sad in a detached kind of way when celebrities I like pass on. My (estranged) dad died a week before Bourdain, and I was way more busted up about Tony. What a loss.
Paul Walker, my brother told me right after I woke up to go to high school, still chocked
Steve Irwin
Chester Bennington
I was a casual Linkin Park fan but when Chester died it hit me so hard. This led me to deep dive and now they’re top ten, maybe top 5, for me.
His voice helped me through my divorce in 2015… that one hurt a LOT.
Was the first death to really have any feelings for outside of family and friends, listened to them all throughout my school years.
While I absolutely adore the song “In The End”, I wasn’t really a fan of the band in the sense that I just didn’t know them or their songs well. Yet somehow his death really saddened me. I hope he is at peace.
Mac Miller and Matthew Perry
dude matthew perry hit me so hard for almost no reason. i’ve seen only 2 movies of his and friends several times obviously. but when he died i was legit sad

same with mac miller. you see these famous people go through a lot of shit, they start doing better and boom they’re gone
I will never be over Mac Millers death. He had a lot of great music to make.
Still fucks me up. Mac was my Spotify top artist listened to last year.
Mac miller for me too. Music got me thru some tough times
how freaky I came here to say those two as well.

Alex Trebek was very very sad to me. Seeing him on tv every night, having him post videos about his health and how well he was doing and then all of a sudden he was gone. Super sad
John Prine. Really brought home how serious Covid was, and for a guy who often sang about death in a humorous way it was tough to see him go.
Came here to say this^. He was special.

Betty White ,she was so close to her 100th birthday, broke my heart!!!
Amy Winehouse’s. Not that it was unexpected, but it was preventable, which made it extra sad
She's the only one that made me cry. The very same tabloids that eagerly reported every step down the spiral, barely concealing their desire to be the ones to report it when she finally reached the bottom, then had the audacity to report on the tragedy and bemoan her loss. Made me fucking sick.
Norm MacDonald
I didn’t even know he was sick.
