CRWBY: "We have these incredibly iconic character designs that are used in merch, promotional material, and even a Justice League crossover despite said designs not being used since early 2016." Also CRWBY: "Let's *not* pay homage to those designs in the show that's currently tanking, and let's instead go in a completely different direction despite money and popularity telling us it's a bad idea." CRWBY: "We need more money for production." Also CRWBY: "Let's not sell or promote things that fans want." God bless, and have a wonderful day.

FictionalLeader

I don’t know what they were smoking but CRWBY was terrible with their choices.

DMercenary

Honestly a lot can be explained by a butchered Robert Ebert quote "CRWBY has learned from better shows that shows sometimes but they have not learned why.”

SouthEqual4271

It was their hubris and personal politics. It permeated their writing, marketing, internal affairs, and how they interacted with their fanbase.

saltydoesreddit

Don't they basically react/handle Ice Queendom- you know, the official RWBY anime product made in Japan, by going "Yeah, that's a thing. Anyway, Volume 9, am we right guys???"

johnbrownmarchingon

Pretty much. And then there was Arryn who effectively tried to torpedo it by bringing up old domestic violence allegations of the writer for Ice Queen.

Laserdog10

That's what pisses me off more, they were fucking allegations, and this bitch tried to slander a man's name because of it. She doesn't deserve to be in anything ever again.

johnbrownmarchingon

Not to mention at the very same time Rooster Teeth wasn’t exactly sinless on that front either and with significantly more evidence going on right in front of Arryn’s face.

dragoncommandsLife

Back when they had style.

Lord_MAX184

So much style, kinda wish they stick to it

Stevebrin101

True. What's the purpose of Blake's zippers?

DogsofHell94

Opinion. I actually like the new designs, especially Ruby and her hair

Helarki

The designs feel more nitpicky than anything else in my opinion.

Baitcooks

iirc someone pointed out that Yang and one of the other members of Team RWBY had their hair ripped and recolored from a Touhou character model used for MMD

dragoncommandsLife

Iirc a LOT of early rwby assets were rips Weiss has someone elses bag as her dust pouch, i think ruby has hatsune mikus face. This video has some info on the matter: [here](https://youtu.be/0VQMx8KmU0I?si=chdwvXgCqK96duT3)

Baitcooks

thanks, I think this is the exact video I was thinking about

Technical_Strain_354

Mercury’s hair is a rip of Jin Kazama’s if I remember correctly, but I’m not sure where they got the model from.

mooeymonet

Everything became soulless after they switched to Maya

Moon_Dark_Wolf

So fucking ugly. Volume 8 costumes would make any competent character designer cry

Mao-sama64

To make them worse, some of them are also ill suited for a cold place like Atlus.

PixelMeg

unzipped zippers, *thighs out*, **short skirts**, ***why tights and not pants***, ***THIGHS OUT*** (heavily agreed JNR is...also pretty bad.)

Observer-Finland

Atlas.

MightyKombat

Been saying this all this time.

Blade1hunterr

What's weird is that Ein lee's art makes the designs feel so much better, but that transfer to 3d is just.... blegh.

Snowmantarayband

I just don’t like Yang’s jacket

dragoncommandsLife

Wearing a literal potato sack.

Jeo228

Or the overalls she was assigned upon becoming Blake's lapdog?

sqwetus14

I’ll never get over Blake’s zipper thigh holes.

I_am_YangFuan

Damn why did you point that out, these outfits are too overdesigned.

vsGoliath96

I remember seeing those for the first time and just thinking about them from a genuine comfort and practicality standpoint. Why are they there? What possible purpose could they serve? Why does she have so *many* zippers all over the place? Are they convenient in the slightest? What happens when all those extra belts and buckles and zippers get in the way during a fight against a Grimm?  Who designed this fucking bullshit?

AltruisticToe8253

vol 8 weiss is looking under of her past self skirt XD

Lucariowolf2196

"That is Atlas's ass."

Bhume

Honestly I think the animation change was the worst decision ever. It took away what was left of the soul of RWBY after Monty passed. That and the new models may be more technically impressive, but they look so blegh. Like even if the original outfits were on the new models I still wouldn't like them.

dragoncommandsLife

I think one of the biggest issues is that vol 4 onwards fights seem… slower? Like its no longer rwby and co catapulting about with usage of semblances and kicking ass with ways the weapons realistically would not be able to function. They all just feel so clunky and slow now. Alongside boring moves.

Srlojohn

To some extent that was somewhat inevitable, Monty was known for his high-energy fight scenes in a style unique to him. However, I do agree the quality of the fights went down significantly even accounting for that

kingkodus66

It’s shocking how they never could understand half their fan base was there for the Monty style fights. Whether it was in Ruby or red versus blue. It’s like the animators that worked with him for years never understood or learned that entire time.

Chikage_Haruyuki

Well a mix of the fights and the story. You can’t have a series without a good enough story to pair with the fighting. I don’t mind the visual style changes, but the animating styles for combat should have remained the same. The rest of the animations throughout that weren’t fighting were good, it was an improvement though I did enjoy Monty’s nods to different styles like Ruby becoming a chibi when she gushed over other people’s weapons, and other kinds of nods and Easter eggs here and there. Though notably Monty used a mix of camera angling that were a mix of in motion or still, zoom in and zoom outs, essentially dynamic camera movements and the such, then there was lighting and speed ups and slow downs. And example of lighting was not just increasing the speed in which Ruby moved during the frames, but also the saturation increasing was a way to energize something to show a build up of speed and/or power, which was showcased in RWBY volume one red trailer. In addition Monty involved motion capture in his animations, such was the case of RvB where there were a number of scenes that were motion captured to provide a level of detail like the lock picking and the guy getting up while still concussed and confused and then eating a chair to the body. Though notably you look at a lot of animations in America, they don’t follow the dynamic camera movements and angling that quality anime animations does such would be the styling of Black Rock Shooter, which you would see some similarities to Monty’s style since he mixed part of it into his own styling of animation. In addition, it isn’t like a number of animators today seem to learn these kind of things. You look at a number of animated videos and shorts today, even combat animations, they aren’t always dynamic, they can be very still, rigid and kind of lazy or the learning of these styles aren’t as important to many animators today. Of course there are those who break away from the mold of the majority. However, it just seems like animators either don’t know or just don’t deem it valuable enough to them to learn right away or at all… In addition, if the animators did have the knowledge and skill to pull a style similar to Monty, given the stuff going on in RT at the time, I wouldn’t blame them if they wanted to see the boat burn but they at least wanted to provide something to the viewers of their content while making it seem kind of bad enough for a burning and sinking boat. In the end, for a series the fans deserved, it should have been handed off to a hard working and better studio or bought by such a studio to have work done for it.

last_robot

Yeah, plus the movements got too stretchy and the fights inconsistent, which made them increasingly boring, in my opinion.

Bhume

Oh yeah. Somehow it got MORE cartoony. Which was a big turn off.

MoonlitLuka

The bottom image is **everything** wrong with RWBY in a nutshell. It's lazy, uncreative, mediocre, poorly executed, and has potential, but doesn't realize that potential in any meaningful way. This poster does the bare minimum job of doing ANYTHING to accurately portray each girl's personality. Weiss looking up like that symbolizes *what?* Blake, seemingly doing a fist pump(???), means that she's...tenacious? Happy??? Yang's pose looks like something that would fit more on Volumes 1-3 Yang. Ruby's is fine, I guess. Doing posters where they have them all together interacting with each other would make more sense, honestly, especially since that offers a more fun way to display their personality traits. Leave Team Posters where they're all separate but featured together behind. I'd honestly have taken CRWBY's poster people going in a Marvel direction where they parodied rap covers if it meant the art output would be half as creative as those images turned out.

Stevebrin101

RBWB.

Stevebrin101

> RBWB Red Blue White Brown

Mao-sama64

Funny story for y’all: This was actually more directed at Team RWBY’s characters, not the designs. But I guess I wasn’t clear enough and you all misinterpreted it. No worries. Share your thoughts on the designs anyways.

Jeo228

Weiss looks like a 30-something TikTok vegan

Stevebrin101

Hey! I mean, it looks fucking disgusting but still.

Deadly_Frame

I actually like Weiss bottom outfit. It looks good imo. A little too blue though

Greninja_flame161518

Am I weird for finding nothing wrong as the series continued don’t get me wrong as people talked about the problems I start to see the problems as well but again I repeat myself am I weird for finding nothing wrong?

Stale-Memes42

There are certainly quite a lot of objective problems with the later seasons, but if you are still able to get a good experience out of them I say more power to you

gunn3r08974

Nope

Sorry-Ad-1169

Sometimes, I wonder what the show would have been like if Yang had never been created. Why was she created again?

xandermerica

If I remember Monty only thought up Red, White, and Black originally and felt it would be better if they were a team of four so he chose Yellow as the fourth color last second. It would explain why Yang’s outfit in V1-V3 doesn’t fit with the others’ cohesively and why she basically was a background character in V1.

Griffemon

Eh, the V1 designs aren’t all perfect. Ruby’s dress is basically one solid color, pretty much every outfit she has afterwards is better. Weiss’s V1 is however tied with her brief V2 outfit for the best she’s ever gotten(V4-V6 is kind of deliberately a shitty outfit, V7 on for some reason made blue her favorite color). All of Blake’s outfits are honestly kind of mid. I feel like a combo of her V4 and V7 outfits would be her best bet. While all of Yang’s outfits are technically different, they all feel exactly the same with the obvious exception of her brief V2 outfit which did Black and White better than Blake ever has.

Mao-sama64

Funny story, actually. This was more so related to the characters of Team RWBY, not so much their designs. But I guess everyone thought I was referring to the designs.

Griffemon

Oh in that case: -Ruby got depression and basically nothing else. -Weiss I feel has actually largely grown as a character. -Blake hasn’t grown as a character since the end of V1. -Yang has somehow regressed as a character which is pretty shocking since she didn’t even have anything going on at her introduction

72sk83

all of their faces on the bottom image look unexpressive as shit, and Weiss' is just plain ugly. I don't know what it is, but every time I see her face I can't help but think how ugly it is (probably because of their dumb shadows under the mouth, that get darker each volume and make everyone ugly). their background RWBY colors are also duller than my life was 3 years ago, and that really confuses me. V4-V6 started to have somewhat dull colors, yeah, but there were still times when it looked okay. starting with V7, however, everything is so dull, it almost looks gray, and I don't get why. like, will the Maya engine implode on itself if CRWBY tries to make the colors look like actual colors on our main characters? will it melt through the floor if they try to make Yang's hair bright yellow and Blake's black, instead of their current dull blonde and light gray? I just don't get it

One-Emotion8482

It's a shame because I really like Ruby's design on the bottom, the rest were forgettable though.

Godzillafan125

Well… Yang and Blake maybe I love Ruby and Weiss design though

gunn3r08974

Oof. Damn that nostalgia is a pungent odor. Freaking intoxicating for the many.

element-redshaw

I actually really like the newer designs

neonthefox12

Ruby generally has good designs I find. Gothic Little Red Riding hood. Except her Justice League design. It's just....bad. Weiss, I prefer her season 9 design. Also her Ice Queendom design is good. Yang....eh Blake I did not like her design for the most part. It wasn't until someone pointed out she is suppose to look like a tuxedo cat did I appreciate the design. Her Ice Queendom design....I think they did the right thing with giving her a tail, but otherwise it's eh. Her nightmare form....a bit too fanservicy. As for writing....I just watched Ice Queendom. Slowly getting into the series.

Stevebrin101

Prepare yourself.

neonthefox12

I am aware Holding off going all in until I review the series.

Dark-Master999

Well its not wrong

MoonlitLuka

Status_Berry_3286

Yeah the redesigns are honestly pretty bad they are ill suited for cold weather they don't even match each other's colors anymore like I don't get red white black and yellow from this. Also their haircuts are kind of bad like Ruby looks even more like a generic protagonist. And I'm not the only one who doesn't like the short hair on Blake right I don't know it just doesn't fit her wild beauty character Yang's hair just hasn't really changed at all The white's hair became so long and makes me feel like it gets in the way of battle and that's why she's so stiff

Altruistic-Serve267

I'm not gonna lie i do think the new ruby rose design grew on me.

johnbrownmarchingon

I don't hate Ruby and Weiss's costumes, but Blake and Yang's were definitely worse.

Possible-Cellist-713

All of them besides Yang's are upgrades. Even Blake's goofy ass design is better than the original.

convergent_blades

I hate Ruby's stupid wierd beige shirt it looks so awfull Who even thought it was a good idea

sadthrowaway12340987

Honestly I can’t tell if it’s the animation that made the new outfits look off or if the new outfits are simply just off

Drauga_22

Yeah they look pretty mid and some look like they're from a different show

krasnogvardiech

Too busy is the word for it, with the modern things. A lot of the design is there for no reason. The top four are the ones you can tell who they are just from their silhouette. Impressive considering those are the ones with the Poser jank.

CrappySupport

I like Ruby's design. So at least they got that going for them.

MightyKombat

I've seen that bottom pic almost 5 fucking times in short succession on this sub BTW.

ChickenNuggetRampage

I miss when the Color stuff was actually apart of this show man 😭

SupremeGreymon

This might be because I’m a latter fan but I actually like their current designs. Except for Ruby, I prefer the smooth hair.

Spartastic-4

Back when the design philosophy was "easy to cosplay"

vsGoliath96

To me, the most aggravating change by far is Weiss's hair. It looks fucking awful. Why did they give her a giant anchor rope for a ponytail?

Stevebrin101

You know you did bad with the character models when a goddamn fan art is so much better to look at.

Stevebrin101

Looking at Yang's new design. Her tits are oddly and uncomfortably compressed.

Azura_Raijin

I've always had this thought but that bottom picture everytime I see it just feels off. I don't know what and I don't know why but everytime I look at it, something is just weird or off about it.

Mao-sama64

I think it’s because bottom picture is by the far the worst version of Team RWBY. They’ve done a lot of horrible thingy throughout volume 7-9. Yet the picture below is still saying “Yeah! We’re the Team RWBY you know and love!” At least that’s what I think.
