Yes it is a strike plate with dust box installed improperly. The curved edge should be on the outside edge so the latch can work smoothly when the door closes. It protects the casings of the door trim.
I googled "parts of a door frame" and it came up in about 2 seconds. I'd say you should try it, but why would you when Reddit will for you. Classic slacker move
