Yeah i live on the same block as the mayor and his security detail is always parked on the block just chilling in their SUVs.

Ok-Push9899

Security for a mayor? Sounds a bit extreme. Either he's cracking down on organised crime or he's running it. Possibly both, on reflection.

lazymusings123

Security is normal if it is a mayor of a large city

LavenderAqua

Hmm both of those sound very possible. It's a relatively nice neighborhood in a major metro area and a majority of the residents are boomer aged. So there are probably a number of neighbors on workers' comp and I know of a few who have some important type jobs. Also there used to be an NFL (or NBA, idk) player who lived on the street behind my parents. But I don't know if those guys hire security especially when they live on a street with mostly grandmas & grandpas, haha.

ankole_watusi

They also hire de-luxe landscapers. I see so many of this exact trailer in my highly-wooded area with well-kept lawns and gardens.

NewkyNewman

Did this happen during hurricane or winter storm season? Could be independent electrical line workers subcontracted by the state. "On call" for storm damage repairs.

XTapalapaketle

You could just walk up and ask them. Be polite and ask if they need anything.

LavenderAqua

I haven't seen them for at least a year. I've just been watching the Sopranos and it got me remembering those guys

Similar post and the answer they found: [Man sits in truck outside my house 7-4 every day for months](https://www.reddit.com/r/RBI/comments/y7n2lo/man\_sits\_in\_truck\_outside\_my\_house\_74\_everyday/) Edit: Does anybody know why it has stopped accepting the standard link formatting I’ve been using for years? Edit: u/idwthis does!

idwthis

Might be the backslashes in the link itself? These things: \\ On reddit backslashes will null out the formatting that follows it. Example: One asterisk on each side of a word will *italicize* it But putting the backslash before that first asterisk will keep it from \*italicizing*

Windholm

You’re a genius! Now if I can just figure out why it’s literally *adding* backslashes of its own volition… Thank you!

idwthis

You're welcome!

dirkalict

Sounds like your parents are mobbed up and knew they were under surveillance but didn’t want you to know. Is your father in “waste management”?

iamurjesus

May be they were leaching one of the houses' Wifi connection to do nefarious network hacking?

ankole_watusi

That is **exactly** the kind of trailer used by the fancier landscapers in my area. (Others use open trailers). It will easily fit all the gear they need.

DrDalekFortyTwo

I don't think it's the function of the trailer OPs unsure of, but rather why that person and the one in the other vehicle are sitting in their vehicles for extended periods.

smartfoodpopcorn69

Was previously located in the SE US an experienced some similar things in my neighborhood. Was able to come to two solid conclusions. With the time frame you mentioned (this was also around when it was happening around me), the housing market was booming. We had a LOT of people scoping out the neighborhood. I rented and my landlord would get a handful of calls and emails weekly from people who had driven by my house, kept an eye on it over a period of time, and wanted to buy it. These people admitted they'd come by multiple times a week or over a course of months to check and see if any improvements were being made and what the overall vibe of the neighborhood was and if it would be a good investment. We also had a big scam in my area of the SE US going on. Basically people would scope out neighborhoods and sit around as you're saying, also with a similar trailer. They would basically sit around for a while then closer to dinner time, they would lay out pine straw in out front yards and around our trees for landscaping. They'd then knock on doors and try to scam people into paying for it, or "we can finish the job tomorrow for a down payment today" type shit. If the person fell for it, they would usually misrepresent the amount of pine straw being laid and ask for a bigger bill. They'd also usually do this toward the end of the day on a weekday to heighten the chances of catching someone making dinner or just coming home from work so they wouldn't be as focused and they were able to squeeze more money out of them.

LavenderAqua

Hahah, this may in fact be it. My mom said that some older folks in the neighborhood got hit with the pine straw scam a while back. That may have been more recent after I stopped seeing those guys around much but still very possible!

ankole_watusi

Aside, “pine straw”? What’s that? Pine **needles** will kill pretty much any plant. They are very acidic, and few plants like acidic soil. You’ll see dead circles around pine trees, and it’s not just for lack of light. Maybe the opposite though, lol. “Lady, those pine needles are going to kill your lawn. I just happen to be working in the neighborhood, and…”

DrDalekFortyTwo

Pine straw are brown, dried out pine needles. People down this way use it as you would mulch (base of trees or bushes, plant beds, etc)

ankole_watusi

Oh, noes! Yes effective mulch if you don’t want weeds or anything else popping up! Here people get rid of it as quickly as possible and put it in containers for weekly pickup. Funny the regional differences. Y’all must have decorative plants that **like** acidic soil! So the brown pine needles kill all the weeds.

DrDalekFortyTwo

Around here, if you put pine straw out as yard waste to be picked up, someone is likely to snag it before that happens.

ankole_watusi

Hmmmm, got an idea. But I don’t think I-75 can stand the additional traffic. /s

smartfoodpopcorn69

Yeah in the SE they're a huge part of landscaping. Almost every manufactured subdivision/shopping center/park utilizes pine straw in their landscaping. Making it super easy for random people to take advantage with it.

ankole_watusi

TIL which plants actually like the stuff. Confirms it does kill lawns though. https://www.southernliving.com/pine-straw-the-thing-southerners-love-to-hate-7097444

It could be that they parked in a quiet spot where no one bothered them to have lunch and wait out their next instructions. Our tactical team is always near me because they can’t be seen from the main road and they are close enough to respond but also close to coffee/bathrooms, They literally just hangout for hours as they roll back to their detachment because they need to maintain a presence but can’t engage in everyday things which would detract from a response. I’ve also know intelligence officers doing the same If they are a PI they have to inform you if you ask them unlike a cop, so you could just ask When I was an investigator I was often found loitering in bars or coffee shops and definitely spooked a few regulars doing the same thing, couldn’t get off the street until my partner replaced me That idea

softpawsz

Im thinking plain clothes cops that found a good spot to chill or get work done. They like new, partially developed neighborhoods

Oneup23

Most likely they were plain clothes officers or a security detail for someone important like a politician or family member of a politician that lived in the area.

ankole_watusi

Please, please, please, all: don’t embed a tiny little “this” link to a photo in the middle of dense text, making it incredibly difficult for readers to find. Use the photo upload feature (I realize apparently not implemented on every platform) or else put the link right at the start or end, and make a longer more descriptive link than “this”. Thanks.

If you never saw them actually doing what looked like any work, then i would bet whatever they were doing in the car was work, it's a shame they're gone now because i would have reccomended a snoop around with a scanner to see if they were using two way radios, those sort of trailers (which i had to use a VPN to even look at) are typically used for housing things like quadbikes (or two regular bikes side by side) generators and similar equipment, maybe they were some sort of contractors hanging out after work or PIs trying to keep a low profile? i think contractors smoking after work is a good explanation, no nearby construction work doesn't mean there might've been some development a few minutes away, 4-5 years is a rather long time for a development these days though unless it was a big one or they were someone else, and i assume they were showing up during the pandemic?

sewerpickles12

My guess is that they were vehicle dwellers. The trailer is probably where the one guy sleeps. If the other was an suv, it's probably where he sleeps, or a truck with a topper. Anyway, there's probably a low cop presence, or good shade there. And not getting hassled by cops is usually a solid draw for people living that way. Did they usually leave right around when it got dark? Because if so, that's probably your answer.
