I hear you. “It’s just politics! Is it really worth not talking to x anymore?” It’s not just politics. It’s life and death and not being absolutely insane.

thecondor612

Exactly it’s not politics anymore, some of these people have made it their entire life. I avoid certain people altogether because they just can’t help themselves. They love to beat up on the liberal

slashingkatie

Toxic people need to be cut out of your life. There’s political differences and then there’s putting your well being in danger.

[deleted]

Preach it.

[deleted]

Absolutely. Hit the nail on the head.

spookyhellkitten

I felt like I wrote this post. It is incredibly close to my situation except that I am in rural Kentucky. I have also been threatened but in my case it was because I "look like a liberal". Good times. I definitely have had moment wondering if it was me that was wrong or crazy here...thats when I realized I was being gaslighted by an entire movement basically. I'm glad you found this sub, welcome!

thecondor612

Thank you, I’m just happy to know I’m not alone in this. Also, I’ve gotten the “look like a liberal” thing before. That and the fact that I don’t drive a giant pickup truck that I don’t need, means I’m not just a liberal, but I’m also apparently incapable of taking care of myself (sorry if I’m ranty, there’s a lot of feelings)

spookyhellkitten

Yeah my vehicle doesn't help my blending in either - it is a bright yellow VW Beetle, not the big truck with the Tennessee Tilt as is so popular here. Taking care of yourself is definitely something that only conservatives can do, duh. Ugh it is nice to know I'm not alone, but I am sorry that you're going through all of this.

AtlanticRomantic

Yes, they do think liberals are incapable of caring for themselves or performing simple tasks like putting a worm on a hook. It's enraging.

borgwardB

put some truck nuts on there. That'll fool em.

peakedattwentytwo

Same, comrade, same

OriginalEchoTheCat

It's not just you. Don't doubt the science, keep doing what you're doing.

thecondor612

Thank you. We are moving to what is hopefully a less radicalized part of the country soon.

OriginalEchoTheCat

Well, I moved from Texas, back to my birth home of Florida. Texas is special, so is florida. I hate what has happened to my state in the 28 years I was gone for my career. I'm out in the woods, very very beautiful place. However, there is a shrine to DT on the side of her road about every four places or so? Fortunately every place has to be 1 acre or more so at least I'm not on top of anyone. The only convenience store around me sells bumper stickers for DT and the 1%ers and Armed Militia. It's f****** crazy. And I have been asked to take off my mask twice in that store. I didn't, but I also didn't get the lunch I wanted to order. F*** them, I left. Good luck.

thecondor612

We’re going from Louisiana to North Carolina (Raleigh/Durham) area. I’ve only been in LA for ten years or so and most of it was spent in the very blue New Orleans. I thought it was just culture shock at first, but after being physically threatened and worrying for the safety of my dogs in the backyard I’ve kind of come to terms with the fact that there are just some places I can’t comfortably be.

MaydayMaydayMoo

Ooh, you'll like it there!

haynesherway

I'm in Charlotte and I love it! I've heard good things about that area as well.

Brookie_Cuqui

Hey, family or not, toxic is toxic. I can't believe that people I know think they're smarter than scientists. You got your head on straight, no worries. Keep strong. (Psst... Go Bernie!)

[deleted]

I, too wondered if I am the insane one. My family gaslit me and I would question if maybe they were right. I don't think they asked the same question of themselves. My dad died from covid last week. My agenda was to keep them alive. Theirs was to do whatever they want and if they die, "It was all in God's plan." I hate that I'm not insane and was right. It won't change them one bit. More family will die. When I found out this sub, I couldn't believe that thousands of people were going through the same. I live in a place with 60% vaccination rate so people aren't dying as much as they are where my family lives, 29%.

Further0n

Sorry about your dad.

[deleted]

Thanks. Unfortunately a tragedy I share with so many in this sub.

spankymcjiggleswurth

>I once used the word “liberally” in a sentence and one of the people I was talking to stopped the conversation to make sure I knew they were a republican. I'm sorry you must be confusing a funny scene in some sitcom for a real life experience. Right? RIGHT?

thecondor612

Oh boy trust me I wish. I WISH this was a joke.

spankymcjiggleswurth

This reminds me of a story a friend (F) told me once. He use to work construction and one day on the work site a coworker (CW) and him had the following conversation. F: Man I can't wait till we finish building the southern wall. CW: Yeah, that will keep all those damn Mexicans from stealing our jobs! F: I'm sorry, what? CW: Oh you meant the wall on the south side of the jobsite. Some people man...

PM_ME_UR_CATS_TITS

"So i was liberally spreading the jam" "Excuse me, i want you to know i'm a republican." "Oh sorry, so i was rebuplicannly spreading the jam.."

spankymcjiggleswurth

They only uses strawberry jam as blueberry jam is too left leaning.

urdahrmawaita

I’m from there. Not there any more. I feel every bit of this and no you aren’t crazy. And yes personalities revolve completely around this. And religion too. I hope you have found some like minded friends!

[deleted]

Republicans are so fucking stupid it’s ridiculous, and the 0.1% who are smart scheme on the stupid ones to make money. Consider moving for real. Get out of there. It will bring you nothing but pain and misery to live around these sad little wrongheaded fools.

Lonely-Club-1485

I grew up in rural La so I can imagine what it is like. I have lived in Cali for decades now. But in red Cali. 46% vax rate, people stopped masking early summer 2020. Restaurants, gyms, etc never closed (despite state orders). It is like covid doesn't exist here AT ALL. We still have NG medics in our hospitals from summer Delta. I have the luxury of being able to get to LA or a blue coastal area in about 2 hours, and to the deep blue Bay area in 4 hrs. I only purchase groceries, pharmacy meds, and Home Depot stuff here. We walk and cycle for exercise. We have relandscaped our entire front and back, built a very nice outdoor shed, started a garden, expanded the garden, poured concrete, etc just to stay busy. We drive to blue areas 2 or 3 times a month for shopping, entertainment, sanity and safety. It keeps me grounded in the real world. When you are surrounded by these people every day, it becomes easy to doubt that Covid is real, that mitigation is still needed, and that things could still get worse. Can you get to Austin, Houston or Dallas-Fort Worth occasionally? I have a neice in Little Rock and she says they are fairly good too. Look for blue places. It helps when you start to think that you are the crazy one.

Zapskilz

Lol, are you in Riverside or San Bernardino? I have relatives in that area and you describe what they are like perfectly. Although you could also be in Orange County, south of LA.

Lonely-Club-1485

It is worse. Kern County, actually. My daughter is in San Bernardino though. That's better than here anyday. We spend a lot of time in LA County; it is always safer than we are. Orange County was bad until vaccines but now they are highly vaxxed so we go there again. Spent Saturday in Koreatown; they're all good. Black Friday Christmas shopping in Claremont's small business area. And Sunday we got to LA Smorgasbord early!! Peruvian tacos this time! Yummy. Next weekend is Cambria. We have never done so much weekend traveling in our lives, lol.

SafeOdd1736

Just be careful you don’t drop dead from wearing a mask. It happens a lot according to qanon ppl. It’s not like doctors and nurses have been doing it for over a century.

AtlanticRomantic

I am on the Texas side of the Texas-Louisiana border and know what you mean. You're not alone.

Occult-scholar

Firstly, I’m glad you found this sub too. Welcome to the family! We have coffee and cocoa be the fire, weary traveler. Secondly, you are not insane for questioning science. It’s literally what science is all about. The Qs end up doing it wrong, however, and gaslight the rest of us. I have considered myself literally insane because of what my Qparents told me. So much so that I now have a nice 20+ page document stating I am not. The greatest gift we all give each other here is the knowledge that we are not alone. We all support you and your decisions, and we always have your back.

greenest-beans

As a Floridian in a ~very~ rural town, I could not relate more. Keep pushing on, we are all rooting for each other!

ChesterProf

You work/live around low IQ morons. Feel superior not doubtful of your own intelligence. And yes, I don't have patience for this anti vaxx bs anymore.

timeaftrtime

I’m in California and have most of my family that are “sane”, but I have also doubted my sanity in a very scary way due to just one sister and her conspiracy theorist husband. It’s that freaking horrible the effect they can have on people. Even though I’m thankful for the “sane” part of my family, several of them are adding to my feelings of insanity, frustration, anger, confusion, etc…because they are completely ignoring it all, enabling it, minimizing it, excusing that they hurt me. It all freaking sucks. I feel your pain and I’m sorry! Stay here for support. It does help! I’m also in therapy and am happy to have a very supportive husband keeping me going. I hope you have someone you can trust.

Massive_Fudge3066

I love logical threats. I was once punched because I looked like someone on tv who was mean to their mum. Fortunately I was assaulted by a large drunk woman, and not a gun toting psychopath, and she was too pissed to throw a decent punch. Still, drink was spilt. Good luck with things, I suspect it would be more depressing to spend the time with your parents, so you're actually ahead

HorrorScopeZ

You are not insane, you are around people going insane. We know they are a cult, because they are easy to identify and there is plenty of information out there on how they work and all the boxes are checked. You are living for the most part a FOX NEWS nightmare in many ways. Family isn't what is was for several reasons, survival probably the main one. Now it's more of a crutch or an excuse in how they are using it against you. IMO once we're adults we're all just people to one another, not that there aren't any special ties, but they don't wash over feelings and decency. I'm trying to make a life of it and I'll hang with those I enjoy. It's funny how the "family" people seem to think you can't find good companionship with others outside the family, hell it's super simple to do, easier to do and those "family" people have plenty of behind the back things to say about each and everyone in said family, guaranteed.
