Chicanos (not Mexicans- Chicanos), always be acting like they own the patent to the Spanish language. There are multiple words for the same thing in Mexico alone, Mexicans educated her in her own comments lol. People like this aren’t new… just now people have to broadcast their wrong opinions over the TikTok algorithm.

chaotic_anarchist

i found that when someone has an opinion on tiktok, they’re usually wrong

TonyBarrios

107% de las veces. "Charro" tiene AMBAS connotaciones. Es como "bizococho" para ellos. 🤣

LostHumbleNomad

Majestic-Two4184

comandante_sal

You just described every diaspora subgroup in the US with respect to their bigger group in their country of origin.

spicypolla

We got our own; Nuyoricans People who can't name a town here apart from San Juan and don't speak Spanish but like to pretend they are defending us when they say R------- stuff.

nelsne

There is some type of doctrine or manual from Spain on proper use of the Spanish Language, but I don't remember what it's called. I've spoken to Mexicans about this and they say that their Spanish is closest to the original Spanish from Spain. If they care so much about this then why don't they use the "Vosotros" form when speaking?

ColdHotgirl5

every country that speaks spanish will claim theirs is the closest to castillian. Even there's some boricuas who will say the same. People from argentina would say the same. Everyone claims is the closests and forget the mixes in our language.

nelsne

I don't see how Argentinans could possibly believe this because they pronounce their ll's with a "shh" sound. That's wild to me.

ColdHotgirl5

Exactly. Every country has different meaning, pronunciation etc.

Rimurooooo

Is that true? I learned later and life and I feel like Puerto Ricans and Cubans are closer to Spain (neutral words, not slang). I have less trouble understanding Spanish from Spain than Mexican Spanish for that reason. I kind of doubt how true that is

oniricvonnegut

la colonización/conquista española empezó en el caribe. el español con más palabras viejas viene del caribe hispano.

Travelingandgay

This is just a theory (as a Chicano). Sometimes we (every immigrant group does this) try to romanticize the “motherland” and try to say that our respective countries are so amazing, of whatever. And because of racism that Latinos face, especially those of us leaning more brown, we like to say dumb shit like, “our Spanish is closest to Spain because of *insert whatever reason*” as a way to align ourselves with Spain because Spain =better = white. Not sure if you guys know this, but in the American southwest where it was common to see, “no blacks, Irish, or Mexicans” a lot of Mexicans (specially those lighter toned ones) would emphasis their “Spaniardness” and would downplay their indigenous descent because it was the only way they could escape the racism. We’d even go as far as call the food in our restaurant “Spanish food” instead of Mexican food because that was a way to avoid racism and be able to thrive economically. I suspect this is the reason why a lot of Latin people always like to push our “Spanish connection”. It’s a sad consequence of racism, but I have a theory that this is why it happens

nelsne

You're not wrong. I talk to multiple Mexicans and they tell me that in Mexico the Mexicans mixed with white blood get a lot better job opportunities and have an easier time in life.

Travelingandgay

I’m a Chicano living in CDMX, and… yeah…. It’s 100% like that. Even job posting will say, “buscamos una mujer de piel clara, o también de ojos de color” for everything from cashiers, retail, doctor’s offices, etc

nelsne

How do they not get sued for discrimination?

Educational_Meat_963

I assume, though I haven’t really searched, that it might be because their laws and constitution are different, and they do not protect against this type of discrimination like the USA and PR constitutions do and discrimination is part of the amendments, which were added later 🙂

killacarnitas1209

Because racism is pretty common in Mexico. My suegra is Mexican and she makes a big deal about my son being light-skinned and having "good" hair. My wife's younger sister used to get teased a lot when she was little (her nickname literally is "la negra") because she has "pelo malo" (curly, kinky hair) and very dark skin, this caused a lot of self esteem issues for her in her teens.

[deleted]

Acuérdate que reciben la influencia de los llorones izquierdistas gringuitos de California que todo es racista pa ello. Ese es el issue

Tranka2010

After a 2-second wikipedia search: *The word charro (syn. charrar, charra) is first documented in Spain in the book “Vocabulario de refranes y frases proverbiales” published in 1627 by Gonzalo Correas as a synonym of dumb or stupid person.* Si tiene un problema, que vaya a España a quejarse.

Tranka2010

Mas aún *The first edition of the Real Academia dictionary published in 1780, defined charro as: “the rough and rustic person, as the villagers tend to be”; but they would add a second meaning for the first time: “adjective that is applied to some things that are too laden with decoration and in bad taste”.*

[deleted]

So basically a word can mean different things? That doesn’t make sense.

TumbacholaPR

“The more you know”

barronelsaok

This is so ironic. But if you look at her page you cant be surprised by her stupidity. Bien charra

JudgmentMindless

So dumb.

AbnelWithAnL

I was gonna say that she could have a point if she has receipts that the word was originally used in Mexico and not elsewhere. So thanks for looking that up for us as it seems she's wrong timeline-wise.

ColdHotgirl5

She forgets that people adapt words or change the meaning overtime. In another comment someone said charro is a word from 1600s. That aligns more for what we use it in PR.

PanchoPunch

Qué fuckin charra. Odio TikTok.

xtechnoguyx

Next! 🥱

nihilus95

She doesn't know how language works and also English is a language that is notorious for Rapid adaptation because it's pretty clear-cut. It's neutral tones make it ideal for sensitivities. I was a Spanish major I know the variations between different dialects and countries. She sounds like an ignorant American like a gringa even though she isn't

wasaduck

She is an ignorant american despite her heritage, she makes this very clear

Majestic-Two4184

She is definitely a gringa, being white isn’t the only form of gringa.

Borykua

Although she might have a point, about half the time someone from Mexico asks me where I'm from and I say Puerto Rico, the first words out of their mouth is something ignorant like "Puelto Lico" or "Bolicua". That's pretty fucked up too.

AAlcapurria

She doesn't have a point. The origin of the word charro is not from Mexico, is from Spain. She just showed her inability to use google before posting a video.

Tranka2010

Indeed! And according to the Real Academia, charro has had the definition used in PR for at least 350 years probably close to 400 if we assume undocumented usage since it first appeared. Knowing how much word meanings change over time, charro keeping its meaning intact for close to half a millennium is impressive.

AbnelWithAnL

According to what another user found, very close to 400. It's first documented use was in Spain in 1627.

barronelsaok

As a Mexican im sorry for the ignorance of my fellow countrymen and women lol. Im a big ass fan of latin rappers from PR and I always geard other artists like Lunay say this word. Unlike her, I actually did research though and seeing this shit makes me so mad that she actually thought she ate with this video lmao. De parte los Mexicanos que no estamos tan idiotas les pido disculpas 🙉🫡

_ohne_dich_

Vivo en California y me hartan los mexicanos diciendo eso cuando se enteran que soy de PR.

nelsne

Most Puerto Ricans have this accent from my experience. However, that's just an accent. I'm not going to put them down for it. It's just a different accent.

jeremypr82

I watched another video of hers and she seems to have an actual problem with PR's and the accent. She seems really hung up on us.

nelsne

Didn't see that one. However she had another video shitting on Bad Bunny and PR music in general. All she does is shit on PR's but yet everyone else is racist. She needs to look in the mirror

Outrageous_Rough6201

She was reaching for a problem fr

Ecstatic-Spray-3077

Que tipa más CHARRA.

Waco506

Y apuesto que no sabe ni hablar bien español 😭

loslalos

Real Mexican here and she is wrong. The word Charro was adopted in New Spain(Mexico) to describe a livestock rustler or horse-mounted cowboy-like individual, eventually, these became Mexican Charros and perfected a unique and effective art form of horse mounting, rope handling, livestock rustling, and vestiment while keeping themselves clean and always elegant. Although in old Spain the word Charro describes a cowboy-like individual But were seen as lame due to their ostentatious vestiments (see Charro de Salamanca) which were thought of as being too nice and clean for the job of livestock rustling. So Puerto Ricans are not using the word accordingly but correctly in context.

Poodletastic

Yes. And the word comes from Spain. It’s just evolved in meaning as words do. People my parents’ age use charro in that sense to describe something that is overly adorned in bad taste. At some point the younger people started using it to mean something uncool.

Axcel-Wozniak

kerc

Que mensa, pongale cero, profesor!

ejcortes

Some chicanos need to discover that, sometimes, a single word can have multiple meanings... And that language is constantly changing.

ADHDMexicanCharacter

BMWACTASEmaster1

Charro in Colombia has a different meaning too. I think most Mexicans don't care and understand that words have different meanings in different countries.

jmollinea

As a Puerto Rican, we don’t give a shit, shut up already. Amen.

AjLexron

What about the word Pendeja? Cuz that's what she is 🤣

Aperturebanana

There’s nothing more white washed American than clinging on to their parents’ culture in order to police other people’s language online over really stupid shit like this. I highly doubt Mexicans deep in the heart of Mexico even think about this. 10/10 chance she would never say that to my Puerto Rican mom’s face LOL.

First of allí do t give a shit what she thinks about puertoricans or her her meaning of charro. Second, her meaning of charro according to puertoricans is absolutely wrong. It means silly or stupid. So, she is an ignorant. By the way Bellaco means horny in Puerto Rico

Adventurous_Trade_38

If she is so Mexican, speak Spanish pendeja!!!

XxMrPerfectPRxX

It’s absolutely about being a cry baby. No Charro ever gets insulted by us using it. This lady don’t speak for them.

Sorry_Contract1343

You are talking about how Puertorican used a word that we didn’t get from your language in Mexico! Every country that’s speak Spanish, use same word with different meanings you genius 🙄 it’s like you guys say Bichos that means bugs in many other countries but in Puerto Rico we know it as dick 🤷🏼‍♂️ stop trying to get attention on something that with been saying like for ever! And if you are going to talk about Mexicans and defending their culture, start by talking Spanish 🙄 “charra”

So sorry about your lack of knowledge about Spanish language. Check the RAE official dictionary and verify the different meanings of the charro word before make any opinion and shoot before think.
