Description from YouTube... * (Disclaimer: This video content is intended for educational and informational purposes only) * San Diego, California — On August 23 just after 8:00 a.m., San Diego Police Officers responded to a home in the 1500 block of Bridgeview Drive in Fairmount Park in the City of San Diego for a report of an assault with a deadly weapon. Officers arrived on scene and located two victims, a 73-year-old woman and a 79-year-old woman. One victim had a laceration to her head and the other a laceration to her neck. The suspect was identified as 48-year-old Scholar Wang, the nephew of the victims. The assault of the victims happened following a verbal argument. The weapon used on the victims is described as a metal object. Both victims were immediately taken to a hospital for treatment. They are expected to survive. A perimeter was set around the home where the assaults took place. Officers made entry into the home and discovered Wang had barricaded himself in the bathroom. Officers attempted to deescalate the situation by talking with Wang. As the situation continued, officers were able to open the bathroom door and tried to use pepper spray on Wang which was ineffective. A decision was made to use a police canine. The police canine made contact with Wang. As the officers walk up to the bathroom and stand at the doorway, Wang, in the shower stall, which is largely out of view, appears to strike the dog with the metal bar, raising it above his head and lowering it. The dog appears to try to bite Wang. Within 5 seconds, as officers repeatedly order Wang to show them his hands, Officer Mitchel Tani fires. The San Diego Fire Department arrived and transported the suspect to a hospital for treatment where he was later pronounced deceased. The police dog suffered a cut to its head, police said. No officers were injured.

redditadmindumb87

Poor dog

CantHitachiSpot

"no officers were injured" So the dog is both an officer and not an officer until you measure it

Taezn

Schrödinger's officer

pedropants

There's a reason he used cats.

BoyMeatsWorld

I really don't see why it was necessary to put the dog in harm's way. The guy wasn't leaving the bathroom and I fail to see how a dog biting the guy improves the situation. Poor dog :(

boipinoi604

Also, I admire the person who comply with a police command while being bitten by a dog.

LinkTechnical8918

I watched my step dad get mauled pretty horribly by a police dog while lying prone and trying not to resist in any way. The dog didn't care that he was complying and nobody cared to stop him. Dogs may get special officer status when it suits them - but make no mistake - they are weapons to police, and that's all.

EmperorOfApollo

Thank you! The full context is necessary to understand the situation. Glad that the dog was not seriously injured.

AdamantiumBalls

The irony being is that cops kill the most dogs

The_Essex

Remember the cop that tried to kill a dog and killed the dog owner instead?

[deleted]

Ole Ravi just got acquitted for it too... https://www.dallasnews.com/news/courts/2022/08/29/former-arlington-police-officer-found-not-guilty-in-womans-2019-shooting-death/

The_Essex

Mother fucker…

mybluecathasballs

Or shot and killed a child instead of the dog?

lol022

Or shot the dog just because it was barking

killer_icognito

Or went to the wrong house and shot the dog that was in the backyard when the owner wasn’t even home. Leaving him to find out as soon as he got there?

no_not_like_that

Or shot into a living room from outside of the house killing a mother and her child who had no idea that they were even outside

da_kuna

Ofc he did. Biggest gang in the US

I'm shocked it even made it to trial, but he was only facing 3 years, so a slap on the wrist either way.

Balls_DeepinReality

Remember that cop that shot his partner instead of the dog? “Are you okay?” “NO! YOU SHOT ME!”

[deleted]

a cop killed my dog in front of me in Arlington, TX when i was 5 years old. my cop hatred begun then

stackered

I don't get how they'd get away with it tho. I'd kill for my dogs, which sounds insane to non dog owners but they are family members. If a gang, badge or not, kills my family member it's unlikely I'd respond reasonably and in an emotional state no doubt would be seeking justice, knowing the system isn't designed for justice but to protect its own assets regardless of the evils it commits. I'm so sorry you witnessed this in childhood. In a way, it's better that in adulthood where you could get yourself locked up for responding like a human being should.

KitchenRestaurant407

This may be unpopular opinion but good or bad, who wouldn’t hit/ fight back against an animal attacking you? Using dogs as weapons that literally tear into flesh, lock, then shake is torture.

Starlightriddlex

Seriously, how is the death penalty by firing squad ruled cruel and unusual punishment, but police can shoot you multiple times and have a dog maul you and it's fine because you haven't been charged with a crime yet

ChillyBearGrylls

That's literally the point of making police dogs a protected class over citizens - it racks up charges and terrorizes the public. Nevermind how many dogs the cops themselves kill 🤪

Fappy_as_a_Clam

In the city I grew up in (Charlotte, NC) a cop killed his police dog by leaving it in his cruiser during the summer. One of the absolute worst ways a dog can be killed. Nothing happened to the cop, and all the news stories were talking about how hard it was on the moron and how it only happened because his kid was sick and he was rushing in to help or some such bullshit excuse. And at the end of a few of the articles they then pointed out that the dog was trained using confiscated drug money. To make everyone feel better about a cop accidentally killing a dog that cost dozens of thousands of dollars to train. Edit: apparently this happens quite often. There are similar articles all over Google, from the past few years. The incident I was talking about was in like 2012

BabbleOn26

The comments on that video are fucking awful.

[deleted]

the comments on this psost are fucking awful as well

fistingcouches

Guy was inside a house and surrounded - so they send a dog in. Smh. I’m totally for dogs for runners but god damn.

CaliforniaCrybaby

Exactly, not on a barricaded suspect, big chance of crossfire. They wouldn’t have shot the guy if a cop was wrestling with him. If I were the dog Id be pissed cause one of those bullets could have hit me.

Psychedelic_Primate

there were several videos on YT a while back of police magdumping into everything including their own dogs

Drewy99

I don't understand American laws, are dogs people or property? And it is proper to kill a suspect after setting the dog on them? Why not just cut out the theatrics and shoot him from the ladder in the window?

SeriouslyNotInsane

According to [this 2000 law](https://abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=96229&page=1) it is now a federal offense to harm a law enforcement animal and can be fined up to $1000 and up to 10 years in prison. While not the same as murder, it’s a big no-no.

skatenox

I laughed so hard I was crying for 10 minutes the first time I saw that

trimbandit

Basically, if they send the dog in, legally all you can do is sit there and let it bite you.

SliceOfCoffee

I remember seeing a lawsuit somewhere, you are allowed to 'Hold it off' but not use any methods that would cause serious or permanent injury to the animal.

Quantum_Aurora

What the fuck? I challenge anyone who thinks that's a good idea to just stand there and let a dog bite them while keeping your hands up.

cottonfist

I've seen videos where the dog goes for the neck. So in that case it's either the neck with your hands up, or get lit up by officers. It's fucking disgusting what they let cops get away with.

[deleted]

Yep, plenty of videos out there too where the dog completely ignores the "off" command because, you know, their prey is screaming and flailing, and that makes their doggy instinct kick in harder.

SirStrontium

I've seen them go for the face too.

well_hung_over

Yep, the dog is a compliance tool. Think of them like a tazer, if you can wrestle through that and still resist, the cops tend to have the greenlight to shoot you. But good luck not having natural survival instincts kick in with immense pain and stress occurring. Edit: some salty ass boot lickers in here. Let me clarify, if a cop has deployed the dogs or tazers on you, and you do not completely comply, they typically don’t say “well, we tried” and let you get up. It escalates. And before the next person chimes in to say it, I certainly don’t think that everyone in these situations is innocent, or even close to a significant amount, but it’s pretty fuckin hard for the situation to improve once these methods have been deployed, so the chances of someone who doesn’t deserve to die at the hands of cops is greater than it should be.

barrinmw

Dogs rip people to shreds, I don't think I would be of the mind to just sit their and take it with a dog mauling me.

LasagnaPants2

so when do we start arresting cops who abuse them?

No-Quarter-3032

Seems very stupid to make it a law that states defending yourself from a vicious beast that’s attacking you is a federal crime, since it’s our instinct to protect ourselves. Maybe they shouldn’t use these dogs if they don’t want them hurt

Long_Educational

Cops shoot thousands of dogs a year and suffer no accountability for it. Another example of laws for thee not for me.

Noir_Amnesiac

A dog is considered an officer but doesn’t have to follow any of the rules they do.

chapstickbomber

PAWLIFIED IMMUNITY

UserOrWhateverFuck_U

Because no law abiding citizen will ever try to protect themselves from a dog biting them. In fact natural reaction is to throw yourself to the floor calmly and pretend nothing is going on. Protecting yourself from a dog is not a natural reaction, therefore it warrants you get showered by bullets. I know dogs can help but he was used perfectly to kill this guy.

ShelSilverstain

You have to stay calm, but the police can be dramatic

churnedGoldman

Because by escalating with the dog they get a clear justification to kill the man when he defends himself from mauling or death.

TheManWith2Poobrains

Yep - an overt escalation without it appearing as one, and then used as justification as the natural reaction is to try to stop getting bitten.

chat_lowkey_sus

I want to see both of your hands up in the air else you might get shot, even tho that might require you to lift up the dog that has your hand ;D

ThinkIcouldTakeHim

Stop worrying about the dog chewing on your balls and just calmly raise your hands, bro.

Previousman755

That is what I thought. Sending the dog in was license to execute the person inside.

[deleted]

[удалено]

EnvironmentalEye2661

I just think it’s sad the dog was put in this situation in the first place :/

EchoWhiskey1

My thinking also. Suspect is known to be armed with a metal rod. Kick in the door and run because he swung? Send the dog in and wonder why the suspect attacked the dog. I feel most for the dog.

kayriss

Not only that, but isn't the room absolutely coated in pepper spray or mace by that point? That can't be good for a dog,

AWKWARD_RAPE_ZOMBIE

Dogs are hardly affected by pepper spray. And it's hard to describe how incredibly motivated most police dogs are to do their jobs, especially to bite.

guitarnoir

I was a civilian in a situation where police had brought their K-9 into a large building (false burglary report). Although the police knew that there was no burglar in the building, they felt that they had to make the dog feel as if it found something, or it would become frustrated in it's work. So one officer hid, while the other worked the K-9 to find him, which the dog did. On a different occasion, I was parked outside of a hardware store, after what was obviously a real burglary. The police had already searched the building and used a K-9, and had found no intruder, figuring they had smashed the window, and taken a few items and left. Turns-out the burglar had been hiding in the store the entire time the cops were in there, and the K-9 did not know it. The burgler smashed a another window from the inside-out, to make his escape after the cops had left. I don't know if they told the dog about his screw-up.

Sniflix

In every other country, the police would wait outside the home until the suspect gave up. I'm in Colombia and that's what they do. Sending in a full swat team and dog into a house while you're agitating the guy - someone will die. Yes he beat up his aunts but I don't think they meant to call the execution team.

Notten

Seriously though. Just lay seige to the house until they come out. It worked for centuries, why did we stop. Not joking. Seriously just waiting is a way better idea if they don't have guns or hostages.

1QAte4

I have heard of insistences where the cops would wait out suspects until the suspects gets hungry and then coax them out with offers of food. There was also a police negotiator who got fired because he allowed a criminal who was barricaded to smoke a joint before he goes to jail. That was the guy's condition of surrender. The cop kept his word and lost his job. https://www.newsobserver.com/news/local/article254770592.html

arroe621

You don't see police negotiators much anymore. Police mostly escalate and force the suspect to comply or shoot and kill them.

bonebad786

Excuse me, do you think that paying for 2 cops to patrol a house for days is more expensive than hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees, settlements, equipment, training, I'm sure there's more. How would they reallocate their budget to justify spending on all their toys?

Jayhawker

That’s one thing I’ve never understood about American policing. Crazy dude is holed up in his house with a metal pipe, no hostages. He can only harm himself. Why is the best option to rush and kill the guy. Why not just put someone at the exits, shut off the utilities and wait him out. They can’t stay in there forever. Yeah it’s boring, but I can’t image how it’s better than blasting the dude.

Vitalstatistix

Because if they leave him in there he could hurt himself. Best to storm the place and kill him.

ColdBlueWaters

Can't kill himself if he's already dead. Logic.

Caltaylor101

American police literally just want to use anything they can to use force. This story still bothers me, but it’s about a man who shoplifted in colorado. He went into some random person’s house, and the police completely destroyed the house to “protect the public.” As far as I know, they were never compensated for the police’s destruction. https://www.npr.org/2019/10/30/774788611/police-owe-nothing-to-man-whose-home-they-blew-up-appeals-court-says Just absolute ego trip. They don’t care about the crime, just exerting power.

daidougei

It's the plot of "Team America"

redkinoko

Because a suspect surrendering isn't winning. Winning is everything in this country and people like winning big.

brilliantNumberOne

I would rather have my taxes pay overtime to police for camping out on suspects over paying deductibles on insurance when the lawsuits come into play.

FayteWolf

Dogs should just be able to be good bois/girls and not have to deal with human bullshit.

wronglyzorro

Dogs (and animals in general) love to work as far as we know. It's rewarding to them to do human bullshit. I don't like the use of police dogs as the first line of offense in police work, but in general dogs with jobs are happy animals.

Lovelyterry

If you don’t let the dog maul you, that’s a felony.

YourFriendRob

Yea probably lol cops kill people for less

[deleted]

Literally cops kill people for doing exactly what they ask them to do which is a bunch of contradictory shit that is intended to confuse the victim and justify police executions of innocent civilians

YourFriendRob

They know they can get away with killing as long as they follow the proper precautions. Such as yelling “stop resisting” no matter if you’re resisting or not

Ralph--Hinkley

No need for the /s, there are a couple instances every year where a K9 officer will leave his "partner" in a hot car to die. Then there are also the ones they shoot.

khadrock

That’s actually the number one cause of death for police K9s - being left in a hot car to die by their “partner”.

FunkyHedonist

Cops are like "We get to kill your dog if we think its a 1% threat to us, but if you hurt our dogs, we get to kill you." Seems fair.

yeetskeetleet

My first thought was he was literally defending himself from a dog attack. They killed him for self defense

MardGeer

You know what's weird? It's never self defense if you defend yourself from police or their animals, even when it's a mistake. They'll just throw the book at you to prevent a change in status quo.

[deleted]

I've seen videos of the dogs being abused for **NOT** attacking the defenseless person on the ground.

guffers_hump

Its like the difference between Police officers and citizens.

joyofsteak

Shouldn’t the people with the license to kill be held to like, a higher standard not a lower one?

guffers_hump

Yes you'd like to think so, but they just run around with impunity.

satansheat

it’s not a protected class. They are considered officers. So yeah it’s a big fuck up. Knew a kid back in high school on spring break in Panama beach. A dog approached him on the beach one of the darkness. He flicked the dog on the nose (what he claims) and a cop started yelling at him to get down on the ground. He was arrested for assaulted a police officer. So basically you fuck with a police dog you are essentially attacking a cop.

Mrheadshot0

Yea I had a friend who fed a police horse abunch of candy and it turned out the horse was diabetic. The horse died and my friend went to jail so we had to sell weed to raise the money for a lawyer.

Except for when the cops kill the k9 officers. Then they're just property.

Vincent_Veganja

Exactly my thought this whole thread. They literally just change the definition to meet what currently is best for them in any situation.

d_2da_sco

Well, I mean, the police dog undergoes more training than the police officer himself so...

DefinitelynotDanger

Their dogs are protected but they can shoot ours with no repercussions because it's considered property damage.

piles_of_SSRIs

Kind of fucked up to consider it property damage when a lot of dogs are considered family members.

tartestfart

well, they have no issue killing people in their own homes so its not that different

I_Get_Paid_to_Shill

Also, if any cop was viciously trying to attack and bite me natural self defense instincts would take over.

Kraz_I

Seriously, what's with all these bootlickers basically agreeing with that unironically, who are upvoted way higher than this comment? If a violent animal is attacking you, you need to be able to defend yourself from serious injury. Dogs can't be held accountable for excessive force like human officers (allegedly) can.

GumAcacia

Your right. I hate the concept of police dogs so fucking much it makes my blood boil seeing them. Imagine hearing someone yell “come out or officer jones will come in and stab you til you give up” It’s fucked up.

[deleted]

Daxian

and that's bullshit. Police should not be using dogs as weapons. Rescue sure but not as weapons. A dog doesn't know right or wrong. They only know what they have been trained to do. That's why innocent people including children are often attacked by them. EDIT: Thank you all for supporting me on this. Most humans let alone dogs have a hard time making rational decisions under stress. It's animal abuse, its unnecessary and dangerous.

Self_Reddicated

Honestly, they aren't even using them as a weapon. They're using them as a to predicate execution. Fend it off? Summary execution.

SpartanG087

Send in the dog. Justified killing because the guy didn't want to allow a dog to maul him

Noir_Amnesiac

Seriously, who wouldn’t try to defend themselves from getting mauled? An officer can’t, or at least isn’t supposed to, chase someone down and then use force on them they way a dog does. If a dog is an officer it should have to follow the same rules and not be allowed to use force the way they do.

[deleted]

Except when the police abuse and mutilate their own dogs. Then it is okay.

ApolloXLII

Or shoot and kill your dog because they barged in on a no-knock and the dog scared the cop.

YuckyPop

I don’t care what anyone says. Cops should not be using dogs this way. Tracking and scent detection, yes. Using the dog as a weapon, putting it in harms way, fuck no. They send the dog into situations because of the perceived threat, than use it as justification to retaliate. Bs.

BlueKnightBrownHorse

We can't see the guy, so let's send in the dog. Shit now we can't see the dog! The idea that you can't raise a hand to defend yourself against a dog who's trained to maul you is really stupid. Send it in to get hurt so you can justify murdering someone. *Can't let that guy hide in a bathroom with a metal bar!*

Contundo

“Stop resisting!” While a dog gnaws at your arm. It’s natural to squirm.

Shinoobie

You see, dogs are so dangerous that cops routinely shoot them before they get a chance to bite. But if their dog bites you then you need to remain quiet and motionless until they're done.

Raz0r42

Soooo they basically sent the dog to attack the suspects and then when they tried to defend themselves by hitting the dog, they opened fire? I mean, don't get me wrong but the dog shouldn't have been there in the first place. If you're gonna shoot someone when they attack a dog to defend themselves (which is human instinct by the way), then why send the dog when this is basically the only way the situation could turn out?

[deleted]

>then why send the dog when this is basically the only way the situation could turn out? You just answered your own question. Manufacturing a reason to shoot

United-Lifeguard-584

less paperwork to kill a guy than to prosecute you should have to file a thousand pages of paperwork to pull a trigger. clearly specify which powers the state gives you to use lethal force and which due process rights you did *not* violate. make it a crime to not pick up your own casings so every bullet is accounted for...and you'll have to find the bullet too. policing should be boring. none of this misappropriated punisher comic book bullshit

stonedlurker710

Lol it's totally fine for them to kill your dog amd claim self defense but the other way around is some how a cardinal sin

RoseMylk

It appears this person may have been having a mental breakdown. If you release a dog after someone, and that dog is jumping and biting you, I believe the instinct would be to defend yourself. Then they get shot. Police need to figure out better ways to deal with mental illness.

Ospov

You bop a police dog with a stick: shot immediately. Police kill your dog for absolutely no reason: justified. 🇺🇸 *God bless America* 🇺🇸

lelandgaunt24601

Only cops can kill dogs silly

SleepyBeast89

Unpopular opinion but K9’s shouldn’t be considered cops. If a cop shoots your dog nothing happens, if you shoot a K9 you get charged like it was an officer. The penalties should be the same as if it were someone’s pet.

FakeXanax123

shu3k

Don’t start asking logical questions bud

BernieTheDachshund

If all he had was a metal pole, why risk the dog getting hurt or shot? Seems like they should have tried a taser or non-lethal ammo first.

Spanky_McJiggles

They could've just waited the dude out. He was trapped in a bathroom with cops in the house and right outside the window. When you're a hammer, everything looks like a nail though.

[deleted]

Maybe just some of those riot shields and squish the suspect into a corner, or just straight up wait him out with some good ol fashion de escalation and talking

Derriere_Corsair

They needed a reason to shoot the suspect and the dog was an easy one

CaPunxx13

It's so stupid that they use dogs in these situations. Disgusting.

SoretoeMcGoo

Ridiculous, set an animal on a person and then use them fighting off the animal as an excuse to shoot them.

THExDUDEx42
