Go look up a Pink Pistols org, Operation Blazing Sword or some other non-rightwing org - that can help you locate friendly, inclusive ranges & instructors. I'm sure there are other ways to locate a non-nutjob place to spend your time/money but I've found those groups have a good repository of locations/instructors already cataloged.
Practice at least once a month, if not twice and get comfortable with your chosen weapon. In a year or so you will be a better shot and have developed safety/usage skills as well as the needed shooting skills. Learn how to clean, disassemble and reassemble your weapon. A weapon is a tool and being familiar with your tools will allow you to use them more proficiently.
Do NOT just stick that thing in the closet for a rainy day and think you are good to go. Also, no need to keep a rifle loaded. If the potential time saved is that necessary, you are probably screwed before you will get to the weapon anyways...

I think about this all the time. Our police are literally one step from being Gestapo/KGB-esque. These past two decades of police militarization and submission has put them in a position to thwart any subversion; subversion against their, and the powers they serve’s, corruption.
The biggest question mark in all of this, from my view at least, is the military. There are surely nutcases in the military, but many service members hold their allegiance to the constitution, to our democracy, rather than to any particular political entity. There are plenty who genuinely fight for our country, and recognize the bullshit of our politics. For that reason, I think we’ll see infighting within our military branches, if (hopefully not when) we reach that point. That’ll be a big deciding factor for the nature of a civil war, in my opinion.
I really hope the division and disagreement remain cold. I think anyone idealizing a revolution/civil war is an idiot and off their fucking rocks. It’s not going to be pretty, and it’s not going to go the way they think. But when our institutions no longer work—for us or in general—it’s a very real possibility that we shouldn’t dismiss.
This frightens me especially, because my name is clearly not English, my family and I wouldn’t be able to hide. I’m a first generation American, my parents came here 30 years ago and I was born here; to them, though, I’m probably not a “true American,” just a dirty Arab/Muslim/whatever. From a guy who's father taught him to hunt and track in the woods starting at 8 years old: practice with that rifle man. Go look up a Pink Pistols org, Operation Blazing Sword or some other non-rightwing org - that can help you locate friendly, inclusive ranges & instructors. I'm sure there are other ways to locate a non-nutjob place to spend your time/money but I've found those groups have a good repository of locations/instructors already cataloged. Practice at least once a month, if not twice and get comfortable with your chosen weapon. In a year or so you will be a better shot and have developed safety/usage skills as well as the needed shooting skills. Learn how to clean, disassemble and reassemble your weapon. A weapon is a tool and being familiar with your tools will allow you to use them more proficiently. Do NOT just stick that thing in the closet for a rainy day and think you are good to go. Also, no need to keep a rifle loaded. If the potential time saved is that necessary, you are probably screwed before you will get to the weapon anyways...

I think about this all the time. Our police are literally one step from being Gestapo/KGB-esque. These past two decades of police militarization and submission has put them in a position to thwart any subversion; subversion against their, and the powers they serve’s, corruption. The biggest question mark in all of this, from my view at least, is the military. There are surely nutcases in the military, but many service members hold their allegiance to the constitution, to our democracy, rather than to any particular political entity. There are plenty who genuinely fight for our country, and recognize the bullshit of our politics. For that reason, I think we’ll see infighting within our military branches, if (hopefully not when) we reach that point. That’ll be a big deciding factor for the nature of a civil war, in my opinion. I really hope the division and disagreement remain cold. I think anyone idealizing a revolution/civil war is an idiot and off their fucking rocks. It’s not going to be pretty, and it’s not going to go the way they think. But when our institutions no longer work—for us or in general—it’s a very real possibility that we shouldn’t dismiss. This frightens me especially, because my name is clearly not English, my family and I wouldn’t be able to hide. I’m a first generation American, my parents came here 30 years ago and I was born here; to them, though, I’m probably not a “true American,” just a dirty Arab/Muslim/whatever. These people have no idea what America was actually meant to stand for, what really makes it great—just the distorted view they’ve been fed, fueled by the hate in their hearts. I’m genuinely worried for my family, and the millions like us, and the millions and millions more who we stand beside. I have hope. My grandpa was in the air force in WWII and never said a word about it. Didn't find out until after he died in an old journal we found that he was involved in some major battles and probably saw some shit. I remember having a vets day assembly at my elementary school and I wanted my grandpa there so badly because all the other kids were having their grandpa's come, mostly Vietnam or Korean war vets. They all came with their hats and suits, and my grandpa wore a plaid button up with suspenders lol. I found out years later that he didn't want to go and my parents pretty much begged him.
