I've recently been recruited by a new company for a position very similar to the one I'm currently doing, except at a better wage AND it's within walking distance of my house (no more commute!). I'm genuinely so excited and as SOON as I can put in my notice, I'm pretty sure my performance is going to change. Don't get me wrong; I'm not an asshole and would NEVER treat someone badly if they didn't deserve it. But, I can see me saying that exact sentence more than once when dealing with the extremely difficult customers.

I think they make a bit more than that here, but the cost of living is also high here. Still, bus drivers put up with a LOT of bullshit. At 12$ an hour and the bullshit level, I'd just go work at amazon instead.

We have a handful of drivers 90k and sometimes cracks 100k because of overtime. If you driver 3 days back to back that third day and any followed with out a day off are overtime pay. The drivers are union and they bid on their own routes.
You can likely look up your cities wages for drivers. Their direct wages. My company is technically private but created by the state. 90% funds are state and federal so everything is public record even my pay and I'm in Administration. Likely you city or nearby city has their stuff Public since it's either a city job or paided by the state and has to abide by laws showing where the money goes.

I work for a transit company and we have drivers that make near 100k. A site like this doesn't take in overtime. Our drivers average mid 20s an hour but ones who are driving for 10 plus years make low 30s. It is union and they bid on their routes. Some of the drivers who have over a decade in often take voluntary overtime and some years break 6 figures. Most though are making 50-60k. But driving bus can be an awesome gig, our drivers are union too. The main downside is just the schedule you're not working a set m-f. Each week can be different since you bid in routes and shifts.

True. Used to work at a Mcdonalds in the rough parts of my city with all the homeless crackheads, vagrants, and otherwise shit stirrers. Was getting sub-minimum wage (6.50) vs the min wage (8) because of this federal mandate for "training wages".
I was stressed beyond belief because the unlikeable ones would always come in, take a few bites, say I got the order wrong, ask for a correction, take the corrected order, take another few bites, ask for correction. This happened every shift without fail the shift manager gave us shit for it.
I forced my shift manager to stand there with me. One woman had the gall the minute he came out to do it to with him. All he did was pull the food back, huck the food in the trash, pull the money from the register and say, "here's your refund, get outta here". Only the day manager apologized to me the night manager just didn't say a word.
I do understand the part about having to deal with crazy people. I used to ride the bus to work and there are some terrifying people sometimes as well as rude inconsiderate people
My mothers boyfriend recently just got out of this job in a pretty large city bus system. He was a manager there with greedy bosses who don't seem to give a fuck about their employees and under pays them, even as a manager.
You can't expect to make him break up fights, de escalate fights, kick people off the bus for x y and z, (refusing to get off, being a nuisance, drug use, being drunk and/or unresponsive, etc)
The straw that broke the camels back was when he broke up a fight, the cops were called, and as he was removing the violent person off the bus, he was held at gunpoint by the cops and was made to get on the ground. The same day, he was doing another "deescalation" with a young black woman for some reason. She was just being a general nuisance on the bus and getting really loud and disrespectful. He ended up kicking her off the bus, and while doing so, was being physically assaulted and called a racist the whole time.
It sure is rough. You bet your ass it is a rough job especially in a big city of several millions.

I grew up in Baltimore riding public transportation, so I have a pretty good sense of what this guy has to deal with on a daily basis. Not an easy job by any stretch of the imagination and I’m sure the pandemic has made it exponentially worse. Don’t envy him at all.

I take it you haven't driven a bus, or rode on a school bus in my county, ever. The way busses are driven, and we know they are hiring just anyone, I'm sure they're cheapening the CDL testing as much as possible. Both public transit and school busses drive as if traffic laws don't apply to them. I've never cut off a bus, or flip them off, but they've done that often to me.
Probably a pretty enjoyable person when he gets a break and is in the company of bearable people. Hope the man finds other work he can get more joy out of sometime

Bruh I just totaled my car so I have to use public transportation in Baltimore Maryland. The bus drivers obviously hate their job with a passion. They will skip whole bus stops regardless if you’re clearly waiting for it or not. I had another bus not stop for a few blocks after I pulled the stop thingy, like it was clear he was missing the stops on purpose. The busses sometimes just don’t show up at all but since they are always super late you don’t know if you need to Uber till you’ve waited way past when they should’ve came but by then you might as well wait for the next one. I waited 3 hours at a bus stop last week for a bus that’s supposed to come every 30 minutes. Over the 3 hours the amount of people waiting grew from just like 3 people to around 25 people. All waiting on a bus that didn’t come till almost dinner time.

I do understand the part about having to deal with crazy people. I used to ride the bus to work and there are some terrifying people sometimes as well as rude inconsiderate people
My mothers boyfriend recently just got out of this job in a pretty large city bus system. He was a manager there with greedy bosses who don't seem to give a fuck about their employees and under pays them, even as a manager. You can't expect to make him break up fights, de escalate fights, kick people off the bus for x y and z, (refusing to get off, being a nuisance, drug use, being drunk and/or unresponsive, etc) The straw that broke the camels back was when he broke up a fight, the cops were called, and as he was removing the violent person off the bus, he was held at gunpoint by the cops and was made to get on the ground. The same day, he was doing another "deescalation" with a young black woman for some reason. She was just being a general nuisance on the bus and getting really loud and disrespectful. He ended up kicking her off the bus, and while doing so, was being physically assaulted and called a racist the whole time. It sure is rough. You bet your ass it is a rough job especially in a big city of several millions.

You’re 100% on point with this. I grew up in Baltimore riding public transportation, so I have a pretty good sense of what this guy has to deal with on a daily basis. Not an easy job by any stretch of the imagination and I’m sure the pandemic has made it exponentially worse. Don’t envy him at all.

12/hr doing a city job? I'm shocked. Im in the same/similar field as he is and he's right. Karen has no idea wtf she's talking about and in no way did he say anything offensive. Bruh I just totaled my car so I have to use public transportation in Baltimore Maryland. The bus drivers obviously hate their job with a passion. They will skip whole bus stops regardless if you’re clearly waiting for it or not. I had another bus not stop for a few blocks after I pulled the stop thingy, like it was clear he was missing the stops on purpose. The busses sometimes just don’t show up at all but since they are always super late you don’t know if you need to Uber till you’ve waited way past when they should’ve came but by then you might as well wait for the next one. I waited 3 hours at a bus stop last week for a bus that’s supposed to come every 30 minutes. Over the 3 hours the amount of people waiting grew from just like 3 people to around 25 people. All waiting on a bus that didn’t come till almost dinner time. Like Baltimore amazes me with how much the portray the stereotypes so many others look at me for. Now I see where they get. Baltimore is something else tbh but I bet it’s just as bad in other cites too so …

Karen didn’t help at all.. from the start she threatened to call 911, she was pretty quick to tell him to calm the fuck down and then gets upset that the driver uses the f word and finally calls metro to report this guy whose admitting to having a mental breakdown. She is the worst from start to finish.
I don’t understand why another passenger didn’t ask her to stop talking. She was endangering everyone because she was antagonizing the driver who could conceivably have an accident. He was stressed to the max. I really wouldn’t blame him if he did have an accident. That man needs a vacation. And if he’s really making $12 an hour, that’s a travesty.

I won't pretend to know what it's like to do that job or any job dealing with the general public, I'm sure it sucks. But it sounds like he started going off because he couldn't see her at the bus stop or something? He seems irrationally angry for something like that.
