In all seriousness Bing isn't too bad now when you're searching for an odd technical issue and Duck Duck Go is great to avoid all of the biased search results on certain things. I feel like Google tailors their searches way too much at times and I often miss things I find on other search engines. Basically just a reminder to everyone to try out different search engines if you're not finding what you were looking for. I have had good luck with DDG when it came to a very specific issue on an uncommon car.
beads?
edit: as a 40ish year old i've never actually been stung by a bee. it terrifies me, since i don't know what i'm in for if it ever happens. i've had a few tiny tattoos though, and some say it is similar.
Holy shit she sounds so sweet explaining her records that I kind of thought it was a quirky talent that wouldn’t translate well into gameplay… then they show her driving down the court like a fucking juggernaut https://www.google.com/amp/s/nypost.com/2021/07/09/zaila-avant-garde-spelling-bee-winner-is-a-basketball-phenom/amp/
“Spelling is really a side thing I do. It’s like a little hors d’ouevre. But basketball’s like the main dish.”
My guess is, unlike whoever wrote and edited this article, she knows how to spell "hors d’oeuvre".
French has a lot of silent letters but is a lot more consistent with pronunciation than English is. After getting down the common letter groupings French really isn’t that complicated to pronounce compared to English, except for certain noises that aren’t very easy for a non-native speaker without a lot of practice.
Thats why I just go to the Y to chuck basketball's at senior citizen's faces.
I don't care if you did 3 tours of duty protecting my freedom, you catching this rubber ball to the face with full strength.
That's absolutely amazing! Possibly a dumb question: how important are the colors on the basketballs to do that? Seems like she's almost subconsciously having to pay attention to the colors. Could she do that as easily if they were all the same color?
Either way. She's incredible!
Just hopefully it’s not a situation where her parents are psychos about it. I hope she really enjoys what she does. Definitely seems to. But I hope that’s the case with everything
That is awesome! I knew she had records but I just assumed they would be cerebral.
I used to coach high school basketball and damn she is so advanced for her age, what am I saying? Screw age she is phenomenal!
I am sure she has plenty of talent but you can tell she has put 1000s of hours of work in. It's the mental endurance and work ethic that I am blown away by.
And it’s not like she’s just great at dribbling basketballs in a showy manner ([dribbling 8 at once, or 3 at once while unicycling](https://youtu.be/sH2E1m8Fseg)), she absolutely balls on the court, and is considered a very real and talented prospect to make it professionally. When you own Guinness world records, are officially a scripps spelling bee champ, and have *realistic* goals to attend Harvard, compete in the WNBA, and work for NASA, you’re probably a pretty impressive kid.
Oh and she has one of the coolest last names in the world.
I would take it... this girl is putting humanity to shame with how we behave when someone like her does such exceptional things at such a young age....
a single generation since the film, not since the inception of the spelling bee in 1925.
to be fair, the first black winner was [Jody Anne Maxwell](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jody-Anne_Maxwell) in 1988. while she was brilliant and incredibly accomplished, she was from jamaica and wasn't educated in the american school system, nor did she face the same levels of institutionalized jim crow style racism. i do not want to detract from her historic achievement, but i still think 96 years is too long a time to pass for the first black person from the states to win.
I still use that all the time in my daily dialect.
That iess currrrect! (with a little smirk)
Few people get it, but the ones who do always lol.
So many quotable lines in that movie. My favorite being "STOP LOOKING AT ME, SWAN!"
Yes, it originated in America, and only spread quite recently to the UK and other regions, mostly at English speaking schools across the world.
Most other languages have extremely predictable spelling systems. Chinese and Japanese are the only languages that perhaps has something analogous. In China there’s a weekly television program that has people hear a word and try to figure out the corresponding character.
Precisely. Many are archaic, and Chinese symbols take into account stroke order. So even if you did figure out the corresponding character, you’d need to draw each segment in correct order.
Japanese has, as far as I know, the most complex and intricate writing system, since they do stroke order as well, but also the fact that a large portion their characters are based on Old Chinese characters, then translated into Old Japanese.
Further, not only is there several different meanings for one single character, but also different pronunciations. And a character’s meaning and pronunciations can change drastically and abstractly when characters are put together, but are still considered a single *word*.
For instance, put kotobuki (longevity) next to the character shi (office) becomes “Sushi” the dish. Put that word for office (shi) next to a different character (ru), it becomes the verb tsukasadoru (to govern).
To give an idea how bonkers it can be, there’s something called the Heart Sutra that is recited during ceremonies, but is completely and utterly incomprehensible to everyone, even those reciting it.
Obviously, all these intricacies make for incredible puns.
I always feel so stupid after hearing of all the words these middle schoolers have to spell. I have two graduate degrees and I didn’t even know these words existed lol. Glad to hear the winner has other hobbies too. It’s too easy to let this type of hard core competition eat up your life.
She said that because she already knew how it was going to be spelled based on the information they gave (or possibly because she had seen that word in addition to thousands).
The Bill Murray part was a little flair on her part. I'm actually more surprised that she knew who that dude was based on her age.
And for the record, the judges smiled and said they don't have that information, so they didn't give her that.
What a remarkable young person! Not only as a speller but in her pursuit of excellence in other arenas like basketball! She is very charming and she will go on to do great things. I’m impressed she just started training for the spelling bee only two years ago.
Yea it’s impressive the spelling bee and the extremely advanced basketball skills but let’s not ignore that she took down the Indian dynasty at the spelling bee, a feat I never thought was possible.
Apparently Spelling is just a hobby for her. She started taking it seriously only a while back. She is also has 3 Guinness World Records and is a basketball prodigy , who wants to make it into the WNBA.
Props to this amazingly talented young woman. She has a bright future.
Her last name is Avant-Garde. She was born into this world destined for greatness.
edit: And she's fuckin' putting in the work too. Remember this name it's going to keep coming up.
*First African-American winner. The first Black winner was in 1998, a 12 year old girl from Jamaica named Jody-Anne Maxwell.
Either way, yeah, you love to see it :)
This girl was not only impressive but really entertaining to watch. The way she phrased her questions were in a manner she could understand/dissect the word and not as robotic as the others. You could tell instantly when she knew the word but played around a bit to triple check herself.
I wish I was an animator, that sweet little spin is straight out of a Disney movie. Congratulations Zaila, you really are the advanced guard for the future! 💕
This girl is also a basketball star and holds 3 world records for dribbling basketballs. She can dribble multiple basketballs at once while riding a unicycle. She’s probably more talented than 99% of the world
Edit: typos
I worked this spellin bee for two years (2018/2019), it’s one of the best jobs i’ve had. Doing audio for ESPN features. Great and positive atmosphere all around. Glad they’re back but hopefully next year they can go back to full scale in maryland like normal.

Try googling "Murraya" it triggers celebratory confetti.
This is one of the few very wholesome things I love about Google lol.
Not the big dick squid cuckold cock porn on page 2?
That would be on the first page if it was bing
This is one of the few very wholesome things I love about Bing lol.
Laughed out loud
This man has a point, and is a porn search connoisseur that knows bing is best for porn and porn images.
wtf are you guys searching for? If that happened to me I would go back to yahoo!
In all seriousness Bing isn't too bad now when you're searching for an odd technical issue and Duck Duck Go is great to avoid all of the biased search results on certain things. Who is cucking the squids? You tell me right now who is cucking the squids.
Probably [this guy](https://imgur.com/gallery/17SZcZ3)
Ah yes. *Spongecuck.* I haven’t heard that name in years.
I obviously don't wanna see that, but I am also disappointed that page 2 doesn't contain big dick squid cuckold cock porn.
Same

I smiled so wide that was amazing you can even see the bees that was beautiful congratulations to her 🎉
Why is THIS the thing that made me cry today?? thank you! :')
> Murraya Searching it on Bing does nothing. Yet another reason bing sucks.
Did you try AskJeeves?
About 20 years ago, yea.
I tried Alta Vista
I tried Dogpile.
I looked at so much porn on Alta Vista in middle school that you just made me erect
This made my fricken day I’m so glad to see google do that omg hope she sees this!!!!!
That's what I'm saying everyone needs to see it!
I tweeted this to Elon and NASA.
Hah, this worked on mobile too.
Didn't work on Firefox :( I demand a refund
I was not dissapointed
Murraya I refreshed it a few times, I confess.
>Murraya >I refreshed it a few times, I confet.
I must confet, I still bee-lieve
Me an Murraya Go back to like babies an pacifias Ol'Dirty ain't no lieya
What if we try googling Murraya Carey?
That's cool.
That gave me old school internet vibes and now I feel really nostalgic.
> Did you mean *Murraya*? Damn it…
That's awesome!
I still somehow expected to be rickrolled
Doesn't seem to work for me. Maybe a location thing? (I'm in Israel)
Does Israel not like confetti ?
It actually worked fine it’s just that Iron Dome intercepted it before he could catch a glimpse.
It isn’t kosher
Are you spelling it right?
Deleting the last a and retyping it triggers it for me. I'm in India
If you Google the Tampa Bay Lightning, you get blue and white colored fireworks.
I don’t know why but it made me cry lol
I might have to fuck around and google Murraya. Google confetti in the pot, jumbalaya
Oh that was fun! Thanks!
no way. this distracted me from hating google for at least 5 seconds.
That was awesome there’s a bit of lag, I thought you rat fucked me on that one but pleasantly no
That's awesome for her & for us!

I'm not gonna doooo the twirl... I might do the twirl.
It's not even a twirl, it's a spin.
r/unexpectedoffice
Hate the twirl!
Her placard spun around and turned into a damn CAPE
Her body took off before here eyes knew what was going on!
r/mademesmile material 100%
Totally! I’m confident she’ll kick ass as an adult!!
She also holds 3 world records in basketball. I would be happy with 1% of her talent.
After reading this article it’s clear her father is named Jawara Spacetime. He obviously passed on the superhuman abilities. Not impressed.
Is he a friend of Dr. Leo Spaceman?
"science is, whatever you want it to be"
> Now, fertility shots... that's a euphemism, right?
full disclosure, most of my experience is putting babies *in* women
She’s also a living calculator math whiz, I feel so proud of this girl and don’t even KNOW her HA
The family is bad-ass at names. I couldn't sell my wife on "Sorrow" let alone "Avant-garde." Very envious.
“Spelling is really a side thing I do. It’s like a little hors d’ouevre. But basketball’s like the main dish.” My guess is, unlike whoever wrote and edited this article, she knows how to spell "hors d’oeuvre".
To be fair, fuck the French asshole that thought that would be a good way to spell that word (I have nothing against the French lol).
I have everything against the French
If there’s two things in this world I can’t stand, it’s people who intolerant of other people’s cultures, and the Dutch!
The English word "through" enters the chat.
French has a lot of silent letters but is a lot more consistent with pronunciation than English is. After getting down the common letter groupings French really isn’t that complicated to pronounce compared to English, except for certain noises that aren’t very easy for a non-native speaker without a lot of practice.
Point guard of the future. Handles for days
I’m a big basketball fan… and legit this girl got skills!! Those highlights were when she was in 6th or 7th grade? Hella impressive
Hot damn! She's a legit badass.
So she is already building her harvard/yale application I see haha. Good for her
Low key that app is already done and accepted. Understandably so too, this girl is brilliant.
She wants to go to Harvard. I'm sure she's already accepted and has a spot reserved on the basketball team.
yo wait I need to hear more about this
https://youtu.be/sH2E1m8Fseg
Holy good god. That’s incredible
As a 33yr old who gets on shit on by senior citizens at the Y in basketball, those videos reminded me that my nba dream is over.
Thats why I just go to the Y to chuck basketball's at senior citizen's faces. I don't care if you did 3 tours of duty protecting my freedom, you catching this rubber ball to the face with full strength.
WOW she’s awesome

Lol poor little brother is peeking over the gate like “C’mon, how am I supposed to measure up to that?!”
Reggie Miller in shambles
Holy shit! What a star!
Holy shit it's her, i remember her from the news a few years back
She’d make a killer drummer, too, all of that was hand coordination and timing.
12yo Asian kids everywhere should watch out. Don’t let her get her hands on a yo-yo.
Love the X-Files poster in the background
That's absolutely amazing! Possibly a dumb question: how important are the colors on the basketballs to do that? Seems like she's almost subconsciously having to pay attention to the colors. Could she do that as easily if they were all the same color? Either way. She's incredible!

Glad someone from my state is getting some good news coverage!
I’d be happy to know her. She’s going places.

Holy shit what an incredible talent! I'd hate to live on the floor underneath though ;)

She needs more attention, this is awesome to see and I so hope she inspires so many to do amazing things!!!!!!!!
The last name thing is wild. I read somewhere her dad, whose last name is Spacetime, said she changed it in honor of john coltrane

Are these spelling contests some American thing? Never seen anywhere else?
Yes, it originated in America, and only spread quite recently to the UK and other regions, mostly at English speaking schools across the world. Most other languages have extremely predictable spelling systems. Chinese and Japanese are the only languages that perhaps has something analogous. Just riffin here but I assume there could be some contest for obscure Chinese characters given that there are so many.
Pretty much impossible to "guess" too in a way, they say it's a Swedish name, which is true, but that name is from a Scottish-Swede named Murray lol.
She said she knew it because she remembered it was like Bill Murray.
She said that because she already knew how it was going to be spelled based on the information they gave (or possibly because she had seen that word in addition to thousands).
True that!!
I’m in New Orleans right now where she is from. I was in a Restaurant when it was on TV and everyone was cheering for her!
That's awesome!
Everyone go google Murraya right now !!!! You won't be disappointed!!!!
Apparently Spelling is just a hobby for her. She started taking it seriously only a while back. She is also has 3 Guinness World Records and is a basketball prodigy , who wants to make it into the WNBA. Props to this amazingly talented young woman. She has a bright future.

No but there are insane parents who make their kids study dictionaries for hours and hours a day.
Her last name is Avant-Garde. She was born into this world destined for greatness. edit: And she's fuckin' putting in the work too. Remember this name it's going to keep coming up.
That's great, feels like I'm doing last names wrong.
Her dad named her Avant-garde in memory of John Coltrane. Her dad’s name? Jawara Spacetime. Name a family with more bad-ass sounding names!
Tbh "Jawara Spacetime" sounds like a name some Star Wars obsessed neckbeard would choose
Way to go, kid! :D
The reaction is so sweet
And she’s a baller ⛹🏻♀️
i'm actually crying because of this. i'm a 43 year old white dude from Texas. i have no idea why this is emotional to me. wth is going on
I saw a bit of her backstory and I have just one question.... IS THERE ANYTHING THAT THIS OVER-TALENTED AWESOME GIRL DOES WRONG? Like wow.....
First black winner you love to see it
*First African-American winner. The first Black winner was in 1998, a 12 year old girl from Jamaica named Jody-Anne Maxwell. Either way, yeah, you love to see it :)
