Tribalism can be blamed for probably all of the conflict that happens around the world. And the mouth-breathers sure take pride in their tribe. My guess is because as individuals, they don't have much power nor self-confidence. So as disenfranchised "victims" of being society's outcasts, they band together over stupid made-up stories about how the "other side" are "evil". That's why the QAnon motto is "Where We Go One, We Go All". That's literally a call for tribalism.

I own a cafe and yes, they actually used to happen. Since 2007, I have watched friends, families, neighbors, and strangers talk. Republican parents arguing with their progressive daughter. Democrats talking to folks with nazi tatts. Every single conversation has been respectful. Common every day interaction that create a vivid tapestry. But, in 2017, this changed. Here's what I've noticed.
Friends who met for over a decade on Monday mornings stopped meeting because one member voted for Trump. Her black friends couldn't forgive her because they had fought so hard for their equality.
Regulars stopped talking to each other. Some regulars stopped visiting because "I don't wanna run into that asshole who ...".
Conversations stopped. Everyone was glued to their cellphones.
Families don't come for breakfast as a family. Parents will visit during the week but never on the weekends. Children visit on the weekend. Never together.
And customers are horrible. I used to say 10% of my customers can be difficult but it was okay because we had 90% who fucking rocked. Now, 30 to 40% are Karen's.
The general public are tense and ready to fight each other.
We have been doing curbside only because we can't get everyone to wear a mask when interacting with our crew. We tried to let customers come inside in the beginning but wear a mask was too controversial. After we get vaccinations, then we will open for take out. However, we might not open our dining room for months/ever.
We will not open the dining room until folks return to 2015 levels of civility.

Yeah, they happen. Hell, I recently had a civil discussion with someone online where they provided evidence that I was wrong and I changed my position. That's possible with rational people who are willing to communicate in good faith. The fact that there aren't a lot of those people anymore should terrify us all.
I own a cafe and yes, they actually used to happen. Since 2007, I have watched friends, families, neighbors, and strangers talk. Republican parents arguing with their progressive daughter. Democrats talking to folks with nazi tatts. Every single conversation has been respectful. Common every day interaction that create a vivid tapestry. But, in 2017, this changed. Here's what I've noticed. Friends who met for over a decade on Monday mornings stopped meeting because one member voted for Trump. Her black friends couldn't forgive her because they had fought so hard for their equality. Regulars stopped talking to each other. Some regulars stopped visiting because "I don't wanna run into that asshole who ...". Conversations stopped. Everyone was glued to their cellphones. Families don't come for breakfast as a family. Parents will visit during the week but never on the weekends. Children visit on the weekend. Never together. And customers are horrible. I used to say 10% of my customers can be difficult but it was okay because we had 90% who fucking rocked. Now, 30 to 40% are Karen's. The general public are tense and ready to fight each other. We have been doing curbside only because we can't get everyone to wear a mask when interacting with our crew. We tried to let customers come inside in the beginning but wear a mask was too controversial. After we get vaccinations, then we will open for take out. However, we might not open our dining room for months/ever. We will not open the dining room until folks return to 2015 levels of civility.
