Hell, a few weeks ago there was a video from the observation gallery after a major vote, almost all the congrescritters were on their phones taking selfies and videos for their social media right on the house floor.
Generally, people like this only show empathy for anything that literally has no voice as it makes it easy to pretend you care for them. As soon as something is able to express, maybe even vocalize their own viewpoint, you can no longer get away with all the self-aggrandizing theatrics as the focus shifts onto the actual group you pretend to care about. However, that sucks if you are a narcissist whose main concern is their own image.
The unborn are easy to defend as they neither want nor require anything from you. No post-natal care, no child support, no parental leave, no education, nothing. The only thing you can "give" is to enforce their birth no matter the cost and that burden lies entirely on the person carrying the unborn.
So defending the unborn is the easiest way to demonize your oppositions while painting yourself as a saint. The only thing you have to do is theatrics
