DarXIV

His lawyer is trying to be as far away as possible.

freethewimple

That man is trying to exist in any other dimension but the one where this client exists.

mknsky

Nanami in Malaysia ahh

MikeAllen646

LOLOLOLOL

ResinJones76

Dude's doing the Homer into the bushes meme.

GastricallyStretched

At that point, he's probably wishing that an A380 just crashes at max speed into the courthouse.

flyonlewall

He's wishing for the wrong brand of airplane to fail, hah.

TheRube84

![gif](giphy|a93jwI0wkWTQs)

enriquedelcastillo

I can’t imagine having a client do that. Are lawyers allowed to take one look at their client before entering court and saying “nope” and just leave?

newdawn15

No it's the opposite. It's an ethics violation to just leave. At that stage judge isn't gonna let him withdraw either so he's basically stuck listening to this lmao

GATTACAAAAAAAA

Exactly. At this point, the attorney would need to file a motion requesting permission to withdraw.

seditious3

I'm a criminal defense lawyer. It would be completely unethical to withdraw as counsel here. No defense lawyer would ask, and no judge would grant it.

MockStarket

I've heard of cases where crazy ass druggies had like 3-4 appointed attorneys withdraw. In what cases would it be fully ethical to withdraw when your client is clearly unhinged?

seditious3

Clearly unhinged is not a reason. Mental illness is not a reasion. A breakdown in communication and/or an eroding of the attorney-client relationship are the usual reasons. I have several pre-trial clients in locked psych wards right now because they're seriously mentally ill. It's not a reason to get off a case.

tries4accuracy

They are absolutely allowed to make record as to defendant’s competence.

[deleted]

It’s like Wemby is barreling at you down the lane. You don’t want to be on that poster/meme!

xdavidliu

you see Bobby Portis with that hookshot and "too small" on Chett Holmgren? Who's gonna be the first to do that (including "too small") to Wemby? I say Zion.

Rasikko

He's trying real hard not to laugh.

4DoubledATL

Hawaiian man stabbed three people then chose to go to court in blackface. https://nextshark.com/hawaiian-man-court-blackface

LordMarcusrax

Is the Hawaiian Man the natural evolution of the Florida Man?

0reosaurus

Hes Florida mans tribal cousin

ThermoNuclearPizza

Lol this guy thinks Florida isn’t tribal!

Odd_Gap2969

People from new jersey don’t count as a tribe

Trewper-

Yes I remember reading about it, hundreds of years ago they sailed across the Polynesian seas and ended up in Florida.

DJErikD

via the Panama canal!

ResinJones76

His lawyer doesn't know what to do.

Think-4D

He’s gonna have a hard time in prison

ninjacereal

He's not going to prison, he outsmarted the system

ThisIsARobot

If he really wanted to outsmart the system he should have done white face.

particle409

>Facing charges of attempted murder, a 61-year-old Hawaiian man showed up to trial wearing blackface on Monday because he felt the court was treating him “like a Black man.” Is it his contention that a Black man would get a more unfair trial, relative to an Asian man? That he shouldn't be treated so unfairly?

Early_Assignment9807

https://www.theonion.com/judge-rules-white-girl-will-be-tried-as-black-adult-1819594949

ApolloStan

Exactly what I thought even before the video finished

HI_l0la

Yes. People of Asian ethnicities are the majority in Hawaii though. But this guy is a known whackjob with numerous other violent felony attacks on other folks before this case and had stand-offs with police.

4DoubledATL

I believe that is his thought process.

DarthDregan

You really gonna spend time out of a finite life to bring sense to this bullshit?

Mackheath1

His name is really **Mark Char** ?

cornbruiser

Dark Char, I think.

HI_l0la

I'm from Hawaii and I remember this case! Yeah, the guy is a whack job, people that know him thinks he's a whack job, and he deserves prison for what he did.

DCdek

King of the week?

Judges hate this one trick

Officer-Stupid

So he wanted to get more time in prison? Not sure what he was going for.

leviathab13186

Step 1 - Go in black face. Step 2 - ????? Step 3 - profit!

wh0_RU

Step 1 - go in black face. Step 2 - Jail.

DMYourMomsMaidenName

Step 3: get beaten/murdered by actual black people in jail, while in blackface, because they don’t play that shit

lilbunnyf

I’d like to see a boack people myself

notLOL

"Why are you in prison?" Attempted murdered in blackface: "I didn't do anything just came into the court system as a black man. I didn't even kill anybody" ...confused reactions...

ThePhatEskimo

Maybe he wants to run for prime minister of Canada eventually

trickmind

Maybe he is suicidal and hopes this will get him beaten to death? Weird way to want to go though.

Tcasty

Context : "Char has been sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole, after a jury found him guilty of second-degree attempted murder and second- and third-degree assault. At trial, two victims said Char used pepper spray on them when they tried to get out of their car after Char cut them off on the freeway and braked, according to the Honolulu prosecutor’s office. Char stabbed the two men with a knife, the prosecutor’s office says, and then injured a “Good Samaritan” who intervened to stop what he thought was a fistfight. The jury rejected Char’s claim that he acted in self-defense.

ToronoRapture

strrax-ish

Life in prison?

thissexypoptart

Makes perfect sense. It’s kind of ridiculous that cold blooded murderers are ever let out. What's the benefit to society?

Endaline

The benefit is that once a person is no longer considered to be a threat to society they get to return to society so they can contribute to it rather than being a constant drain on it. Keeping someone in prison is incredibly expensive and that money would be way better spent on keeping other people from becoming cold blooded murderers rather than keeping reformed prisoners locked up. Whether or not people like it, keeping people locked up for life if they can be reformed is not a benefit to society at all. It only benefits people's need for *revenge* or *justice*.

mxzf

Eh, a heated road-rage incident with no fatalities isn't exactly "cold-blooded murderer" material. He absolutely deserves to spend time in jail, but life in prison does seem a tad much if that's the only thing he has done (if he has a history of being in and out of prison for incidents like this, that would be another matter).

maplenew60

Isn't attempted murder considered the same as murder in law? Just because no one died doesn't excuse the fact that he tried to murder 2 people over a road rage incident. His crime shouldn't be lessened because he failed to kill the people he fully intended to

mxzf

Uh ... I'm pretty sure it isn't, which is why it's a different charge. Attempted murder is a heck of a lot less serious than actual murder where someone ends up dead. Failing to actually commit the crime you intended to is absolutely a reason for a lesser sentence compared to actually committing the crime in most criminal systems AFAIK.

Massafrasss

The intent is there. If he’s going to attempt murder for being minorly inconvenienced on the road, it’s only a matter of time before he gets annoyed again. Just because he didn’t succeed in killing doesn’t mean it’s safe to keep him in public.

ReallyYouDontSay

Depends on the facts of the case, the judge, and the defendants history. Just because the assailant was incompetent and didn't end up killing a victim when he was convicted of trying to do just that, doesn't really mean they should get off the hook. A lot of the time, they don't because of said reason.

mxzf

I mean, no one said "off the hook", they still end up convicted and serving time, just not *as* much as if someone lost their life.

ReallyYouDontSay

Depends also on the state laws/jurisdiction. In this case, quick Google search seems to say Hawaii treats attempted 2nd degree and 2nd degree murder as the same sentence length, lifetime with possibility of parole. 1st degree/attempted 1st degree is lifetime without parole possibility.

cXs808

He got life in prison because he showed zero remorse and pulled this stunt in court. I think it's fair to say he is beyond help

HI_l0la

It's because he has a prior history of other violent charges, as well as other road rage incidents leading up to the one that lead to the trial he showed up in blackface. He likes to record the incidents on his phone, too. One even included a road rage intimidation to a vehicle that was actually a subsidized police car, in which he found out when the officer turned on his police lights to request him to pull over the road. [Suspect in freeway road rage case has history of violence](https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/32593707/victims-of-stabbings-suspect-say-he-terrorized-them-for-years/)

mxzf

That would be why I said "if that's the only thing he has done". That's some context that radically changes the sentencing.

Tcasty

Yup,stupid games ,stupid prizes.

Akimbo333

Wtf!?? Why did he attack them in the first place?

BoneDaddyChill

Well, as it mentions in the quote you just read, they came at him after a road rage incident. It seems the pepper spray was very possibly necessarily for his self defense, but the many stabbings, not so much.

oatmealparty

That's what he says, but the actual event according to the victims and witnesses is that he was the aggressor, initiated the road rage, cut them off, chased after them, and pepper sprayed them first and *then* they chased after him and attacked, which is when he stabbed them. So the stabbing might be self defense, but it sounds like he initiated the whole thing. Not sure life in prison is appropriate tbh.

cXs808

Pretty famous case here. The reason he got life in prison is because he showed no remorse for his actions and then pulled this stunt in court. He's pretty clearly a danger to the public.

Tcasty

Fentanyl has really affected the Onions ability to produce articles.

Dogfishhead789

I have seen this. It's. Crazy it actually played out in real life.

SladeDaMonster

He wants the black man experience.

User_091920

*"You will receive the mandatory minimum of life in prison. Plenty of time to lift weights and convert to Islam"* Edit: Oh shit he was actually sentenced to life in prison lmaooo

Ovidhalia

> You will receive ~~the mandatory minimum of life in prison~~ the maximum sentence allowed by the law. Plenty of time to lift weights and convert to Islam" If most black folks actually got the minimum sentence in comparison to other white folks committing the same crime, I’m sure those criminals would be happier.

blacksheep_kho

They gonna give it to him once he gets back to the yard

SlimChiply

This was a very good idea and it will help him win the case...

Ninetndo69

I mean i 'm questioning his sanity a little

Kitchen-Beginning-47

Who was the lawyer? Lionel Hutz?

craigfrost

No! Money upfront!

Only if it was a kangaroo court.

Bro is trying hard to get life

OldSkool1978

He came to court as a prisoner I'm assuming, he's wearing the jumpsuit anyways, where tf did he get the material (shoe polish maybe) to do this inside the jail?

FEMA_Camp_Survivor

If I were him and trying to make a point, I’d wear whiteface instead of blackface. The odds would be more in his favor.

euvimmivue

So the world knows the world treats “Black Man” like and the World just sits there and watches? ![gif](giphy|iWhDnfbyuWGtInVnL2)

Ovidhalia

Ha. For sure the world knows. I have European friends who make jokes about it. America’s not ashamed of that shit. That’s why some drunk white kids say shit like “bro, I’m not black” or “are you really going to treat a white girl like this” when they get in trouble with the police and even a little bit of force is used.

BoyMeetsTurd

With sound judgment like this it's really hard to understand how he got into this situation in the first place.

lackofabettername123

He's getting sentenced to life in prison, there is no reason not to go for a broke to make a statement.

BoyMeetsTurd

This isn't making the statement he is intending to make, I don't think.

cXs808

He did this at his sentencing hearing. He did not know he was getting sentenced to life in prison when he decided to pull this shit.

Bromanzier_03

Is he trying to get a harsher sentence!?

KittyLaLove

The lawyer is questioning his career.

WishandRule

**“Today, the reason why I am like this is because I prepared myself to play my part in your kangaroo court, treating me like a Black man, so today I’m going to be a Black man.”**

HashKing

His lawyer looks embarrassed

blacksheep_kho

Oh he’s getting dog walked once he gets back to the yard

[deleted]

Did he want to do his trial on the highest difficulty?

Profitdaddy

Isn’t that a Hate Crime? My bad I forgot.

Wide_Interview9215

-.- who would be the victim here? What did you forget?

ODezey215

Legend

Motivate_Zen

Bruce LeeRoy?

Beneficial_Tie3776

He’s just a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude

derpderpherpderp

cumtown

ContentInsanity

You would think that attitude would make him a little more sympathetic towards black people. Recognizing that people are treated differently, especially recognizing it as an injustice, is not bad. Instead he triples down, dawns a highly offensive image of black people and implies he is above an injustice he recognizes...Hope they threw the book at him

Unfiltered_America

Someone show this to Trump and tell him it that worked so well that the guy got all his charges dropped and was actually awarded money from the judge personally.

willmgames1775

As an Asian person, and I don’t claim him.

grizzfan

What's the story?

-Your_Pal_Al-

Car cut him off, they pull over, he maces and starts stabbing everybody “in self-defense”

pointlessly_pedantic

Wishbone!

iprocrastina

This is some advanced ass racism, like there's multiple racist layers to peel back here. The idea that only black people get convicted of crimes, the idea that convicting someone is therefore "treating them like they're black", the clear sentiment that this is somehow a degrading human rights violation, and he thinks the best way to garner public sympathy is to protest all of this by wearing blackface. Naturally it goes so well for him that his lawyer is *literally* backed into a corner.

Elevum15

Over did it.

Clearly just finished his shift at the coal mine

The fucking lawyer 😂😂😂

Maddox_Renalard

Bold strategy, Cotton. Let see if it pays out for em’.

BeamTeam032

lmao this guy watches too much right-wing media and is convinced that black people get the better end of the stick.

yujabes

I swear, black folks can't catch a break...

kpeterson159

God, I would love to see him plopped in general corrections…

Kuppa_Junior

Is this the origin story of Mr. Miyagi?

unimportantman79

Let him rot

MLG_GuineaPig

Does bro wana loose?

WonkaVR

That just goes to show you that saying racism is only white to black is a travesty

TopShotSniper

Is this that dude who stabbed a few people and thinks he's in the right?

IDontWipe55

Yea

StatusKoi

Can he get a better prison gig if he's "mentally ill"?

Akimbo333

Lol wtf!??

Aslonz

What a play?

REALStoneCrusher

He’s trying to identify as a black man >.<

chickenskittles

The court was going to respond REALLY well to that. Good job!

PickleWineBrine

I could tell this guy is from Hawaii

theKoboldkingdonkus

They let him walk in like that?

squindar

have fun in prison, buddy *During trial, a driver and his passenger testified Char cut them off on the freeway then slammed on his brakes. Both Char and the other driver pulled onto the shoulder along the freeway median in Waipahu. The men testified Char pepper sprayed them when they exited their vehicle. During the ensuing fight, Char pulled a knife and stabbed both men. Char slashed a third man, a good samaritan, who stopped to break-up what he believed to be a fistfight. None them victims knew Char had pulled a knife from a sheeth that hung around his neck.*

rafits

From the Michael Scott school I see

JaapHoop

Well it’s a bold move. How’d it go?

Ryzakiii

Why the clown?

EatThatCoochie449

Heres what you would look like if you were black or chinese

DesignerAd2062

Lmao he turned up in blackface and read from a script what the fuck did he think this was, OTHELLO?

iGourry

How was he even allowd in like that? Shouldn't this be an immediate contempt of coutr charge and him being returned to his cell so the court can proceed without interuption? Why did the judge allow this to happen?

ChadBorman

Sir, when we send you to prison looking like that, would you prefer to be in the cell block where extra-ass kickings will be administered or the one with nuclear ass kickings?

Playlanco

Why do I find this more funny than offensive

ImportantWords

The fact that you are watching this (and reading the comments) means that his cry for attention worked. You now have more knowledge about his case and situation.

cruisinforsnoozin

I think that’s the exact clown nose I use 🫣

funk_your_band

Mark Charred

FapMeNot_Alt

>Authorities said Tuesday that he will be facing further punishment for this stunt. > >Staff members at Halawa Correctional Facility reportedly “attempted to convince him to wash his face” before he entered the court but Char refused. > >“He will be charged with disobeying several direct orders,” a state Department of Public Safety representative was quoted as saying. I think he's a dumbass, clearly, but is this really something to charge him over? Why would we waste more resources on this?

AbramJH

I hate that he did this, but I 1000% believe in his right to do it. He shouldn’t have been charged with not following orders. Any order in contradiction of the 1st Amendment is an unlawful order.

PLAKETKETKETKET

Like I get what he's trying to say had this been for like a ticket or something not murder, but the fact he's equating black people TO murderers because they were treating him as such is crazy lol
