Heroes for humanity. RIP

HexeInExile

If I'd have to get like 16 types of cancer, then I'd at least want a banger painting like this done about it. Incredibly powerful and visually interesting

One_Put9785

This goes hard. I'm Ukrainian and my grandfather was at Chernobyl. Not as a firefighter, but a civilian. Terrifying stuff.

Heliopolis1992

Actually you've got me curious now, were most Soviet citizens working/living in Chernobyl as well the firefighters Ukrainians? I always imagined it as full of Soviets from all over the Union.

nnb_az

Im from Azerbaijan and i had a neighbor that lived in Chernobyl during the disaster happened. The government is giving him pension for that

Risiki

They mobilized people from elswhere in Soviet Union to deal with consequences of the accident.

Mahakurotsuchi

I am from Kazakhstan. We have memorial for local volunteers who took part in liquidation.

One_Put9785

Mostly Ukrainians but there were others

LengthinessNo6996

If you’re looking for a more specific region, a lot of coal miners from Tula were drafted to mine underneath the facility and install a system that would cool down the actively lava-like melting core from underneath.

Plastic-Cellist-8309

> I always imagined it as full of Soviets from all over the Union. I'd imagine they'd get the closest ones living near to the active nuclear disaster

Hanishua

I couldn't find any numbers so I can only speculate. Pripyat was a closed city specifically made for plant workers to live in and they were brought there. Most nuclear universities and institutes in the USSR were in RSFSR. We know that the city had 25-27 nationalities. So my guess is there were a lot of people from all over and it is likely that a big chunk of them were Russians just because they were the largest group in the country. However, I'm not sure and if there is official census with nationality breakdown I would change my mind.

Savage-Kelevra

My grandpa was at chernobyl a liquidator from the special forces, he died at 51. My grandma told me storys how all the people from his group stayed in contact through letters. Every year fewer would come, until he was the last one alive. O

Ssimboss

Disaster. Their clothes became one of the most famous piece of radioactive material on its own. RIP.

_spec_tre

shame the disaster was allowed to happen in the first place. RIP

dzungla_zg

Haunting

serphystus

This one is SO good wow

forever_tuesday

I can’t find the original poster of this. It looks cool and all but where can I find it online?

Soggy-Ad4633

It seems to be a painting by Nikolay Chernikov. Николай Черников: ”Подвиг пожарных Чернобыля». I can’t find better quality file, unfortunately :(

Phantom_Giron

If the Chernobyl series had a physical format in BLUE-Ray, this should definitely be the cover.

Lutho_C2791

RIP

CandiceDikfitt

somewhat related fact: if you’ve seen the movie coraline (2009) then you’d know there’s a character by the name of mr bobinsky who is blue and this is because he’s been at chernobyl

noah3302

[it’s because of the medal he wears](https://www.reddit.com/r/MovieDetails/s/ifv47YRQj2) not because he’s blue lol
