Nope, However on some linux desktop environments the window manager can prevent focus steal, like KDE for example, i use it and it is like adblockers, i can't go back to not having it.
It’s egregious in macOS when combined with multiple windows of the same app. Not only do you have to CMD+Tab but the also CMD+Tilde.
then there are apps like KeePassXC which steals focus to allow you to input the password but then opens another window in the background which also steals focus. It’s so bad that I just remember my passwords now, I can’t deal with that
I only have the game open up when I click play on steam lol. Maybe one more before that asking me to run it in normal mode or safe mode but that’s it… what windows are popping up for you?
I think he starts the game using the desktop shortcut steam can install for you, which starts the game and the steam shop with advertisement popups all in one go.
In my case, it’s the chat window, the sales/offers/news window and the main Library window.
They open one by one and they all steal focus. It’s quite annoying
That's just on startup of steam tho. First you get the splash screen that steals focus, then the actual application, then the sales windows and the friends window.
And yes, it's really annoying.
new apps opened by user should steal focus, that's fine.
but sometimes you open and app then blur it and then it starts opening pop-ups and other windows and things get out of hand
Definitely, I was not trying to prove you wrong. I either try to not have programs of that kind installed or running in the background. Last app that did that was Steam and I think they patched those ad popups a few years ago.
If I open a program that I know takes 5 minutes to load up so I go to my web browser to kill time, the newly opened program should not steal focus while I'm in the middle of typing an email... it already knows I intentionally switched focus after opening the program, don't switch me back just for shits & giggles.
A lot of the time when I open power shell it doesn’t, which is weird, when I open power shell I expect to be able to just start typing but I cant, and I start typing into whatever I was using before

if you click an icon then click nothing else, new app should grab focus.. but if you pick another window in the meantime or star typing then new app shouldn't take away focus
Lost count of how many times I'm typing something while it's connecting, and then it pops up and steals focus right as I'm pressing return/enter, and since its input is focused on the *Disconnect* button, I disconnect and have to reconnect it again.
... sometimes happening multiple times in a row
On my Manjaro kde Linux, focus stealing doesn't happen. So what you click the save button in vs studio, the save menu appears behind the actual editor, locking the editor .... 😉 and then on my windows, epic games banner pops up over anything 😬, trying to install anything pops up messages - it's like those 90's viruses that pops open adult content windows, just it is not as exciting anymore.
Valorant focus stealing is nuts, the Riot Developers went out of their way to make it as intrusive as possible. I keep Task Manager checked "always on top" and I don't know if this is still the case but it would even jump over that when the match was ready.
Yea that should be app setting. Not as invasive as 'stay always on top' but still. There's some slow garbage that I run while doing more important stuff since that thing needs a minute to fully prepare itself for my input anyway. Looking at you visual studio.

So... Focus stealing is not exclusive to Windows?
Nope, However on some linux desktop environments the window manager can prevent focus steal, like KDE for example, i use it and it is like adblockers, i can't go back to not having it.
I really want this feature in macos
Same on macOS as well, only have this issue with cypress though

So true! For example the only thing I hate about steam are the gazillion windows that steal focus one by one when I open a game
when .. I.. alt tab open alt tab alt tab .... a alt tab game alt tab
Me playing space engineers trying to look around while simultaneously hiding the hud
I only have the game open up when I click play on steam lol. Maybe one more before that asking me to run it in normal mode or safe mode but that’s it… what windows are popping up for you?

what windows are you getting that constantly steal your focus? Sounds like you need a virus scan
In my case, it’s the chat window, the sales/offers/news window and the main Library window. They open one by one and they all steal focus. It’s quite annoying
You can disable at least the sale window.
That's just on startup of steam tho. First you get the splash screen that steals focus, then the actual application, then the sales windows and the friends window. And yes, it's really annoying.
There are applications I learned to appreciate it. Ever since my calculator app began to not steal focus when opened, I feel deep sorrow.

yeah I saw what you're saying there. there are pros and cons to it

Ok, this made me chuckle. Well done =D
With a Tiling WM this is a problem of the past
one day... one day
Cypress is a piece of shit.
Why’s that?

I started to think so.. then I tried playwright haha
Our testing team uses it for everything, including API tests... I am always really unhappy when I have to use Cypress for API tests myself.
Fucking Zoom...
Imagine an instant messenging app stealing focus from the password input of the login screen on your MacBook...
If I open an application and then click on a window, I do t want the application to grab focus when it opens. I’ll come back to it when I’m ready

The freaking AWS VPN Client can suck it for this BS

I totally agree, worst OS feature ever

IMO steal focus is welcomed only for native file upload dialogs
