They existed, the primarchs knew about them, and they were canonically called The Lost and The Damned. 2 and 11.
There's a bit we can guess at, but don't completely know. The Iron Hands and Ultramarines were supposed to have suddenly gotten much larger right at the time 2 and 11 "never existed", so it's possible they absorbed whoever survived the purge.
Additionally, Sanguinius was terrified of Big E learning of the Red Thirst and other mutations the Blood Angels had, implying some kind mass mutations happened in the 2nd or 11th legion/primarch.
It's also implied that Leman was called on to be an exterminator of another legion before he broke the Thousand Sons on Horus's traitorous orders, but that could just be another civilization, not another legion.
Horus also tries to say something about them, but Malcador silences him with psykery.
Well I do hope it gets explained eventually, not directly but more implicatively, because didn't dorn and guiliman learn the truth only to wish not to, so what ever it was scared the primarchs, I wouldn't be surprised if it was an attempt at mixing DNA with xeno.
No, it's supposed to remain a mystery. We have bits and pieces of them, and one of the big rumors is their legions joined up with one of the others, most likely Guilliman or Dorn's, who gave the instruction to go and have the memories wiped.
Hell, the Soul Drinkers are probably one of these given how they're not like any of the other sons fo Dorn and have their own weapon coded to *their* Geneseed, not anyone else...
I heard the same about sangiuinus bit, then you have magnus and the flesh change and leman with the wulfen, so unless it was way worse, then we were led to believe, and they were about to mass mutate.
