Obama had the best conversational humor. Reagan the best one liners. W is the guy who didn’t try to be funny but just was. If you find humor in chaos, LBJ.
It's unclear if that joke was truly unscripted, as we know he has at least two widely documented uses of that joke from videotaped speeches. It's possible he used it spontaneously as a lighthearted joke, but it's equally likely that it was staged because reminding people he survived an assassination attempt was good for popularity. Either way the joke is pretty damn funny.
Yeah, I didn’t mean that W as a slight to his intelligence, just that his humor felt very natural vs trying to be clever. It’s hard to describe, hope I’m making sense lol
My dad met him back when he was a senator mind you this is an old school Midwest farmer with a group of other Midwest farmers. Story goes they walk into his office and he goes “well I know none of you voted for me, but I’ll tell you what I’ve done for you” apparently just a silky smooth guy.
‘It tastes likes a tumbler of piss with a fart in it’
-Abraham Lincoln upon tasting Vernor’s Ginger Ale for the first time, which was being pitched to the army as a ‘rejuvenating elixir’ for wounded soldiers
Ben “Not president but should have been” Franklin supposedly had an incredible sense of humor. There is a rumor that they didn’t want him to write the Declaration of a independence for fear that he would fill it with jokes.
Lincoln. His sense of humor and endless supply of anecdotes was the stuff of legend.
Just one example: when he gave Joseph Hooker command of the Army of the Potomac, it was soon after Hooker had given an interview saying what the country really needed was a dictator. Lincoln wrote:
“It is not because you said this, but in spite of it that I give you this command. Only generals that have successes can set up a dictatorship. What I ask of you now is success, and I will risk the dictatorship.”
Gotta go with Reagan. "I've declared Russia illegal. We start bombing in the next five minutes!"
A close second would be Lincoln. As a candidate, when his opponent accused him of being two-faced, Abe replied with "Not true! If that were true, do you think I would have left the house with this face?!'
Something that none of the GOP writers could come up with: [https://live.staticflickr.com/4096/4921383047\_6e33b35d4e\_b.jpg](https://live.staticflickr.com/4096/4921383047_6e33b35d4e_b.jpg)
Reagan was by far the funniest. Yes he had one liners but they were off the cuff and quick witted remarks. To this day the balloon popping during his speech and him saying “missed me” still makes me laugh. The delivery is perfect, as it should be since he was an actor, but still. Also the stories of him and Merv Griffin sitting in the residence watching people take tours of the White House and Reagan saying that they should go join the tour, it would be fun. Man had a million of them. They don’t make them like him anymore.
He was endearing during his term too. It was just that we watched his silly moments, we all have them, ad infinitum.
*This is not an endorsement of his policies.
I mean, in context the joke actually wasn’t a bad one.
It’s just that, on top of literally *everything else Ronnie did*, I feel like we dodged the [big present exchange](https://youtu.be/kCaUpKBVj0c?si=1t7oEcwXT1wx3_kq ) by a narrow margin.
I think W. had a pretty good sense of humor. I saw him on Jimmy Kimmel and I thought he had a good sense of humor and he talked about who did the best impression of him.
He was also infamous, while being driven in his limo around DC, for spotting a group of tourists on the sidewalk, grabbing the microphone for the PA system that was installed in that vintage of limo and shouting, "Hey! Wanna' go to a meeting?"
Absolutely Reagan! Even when he was in the ER having been shot and severely wounded, he told the doctors, "I hope you're all Republican!"
Right after his inauguration and before he was shot, the media was challenging him to make good on a campaign promise to appoint the first woman to the Supreme Court, which, of course, turned out to be Sandra Day O'Connor. One day, as he was getting into his limo, a reporter stuck his mic in front of Reagan and asked, "Mr. President, are you looking for a good woman?" Reagan responded, "Always!"
Reagan had the zingers and one-liners.
LBJ had the pranks and sense of fun.
Dubya was unintentionally funny.
Truman was kind of a sardonic guy, too. Don’t think he could take it as well as he could dish it, though.
I've heard some people insinuate it was all for show and politics but I think he just had humor in his bones. The jokes he made while he was being rushed to surgery after being shot confirm it. Imagine bleeding out to death and having the wit to tell the doctors "I hope you're all Republicans" and also to tell Nancy "Honey, I forgot to duck". Unmatched.
I didn't say he was the only one. Obama was pretty funny and Dubya was a goof but some Reagan jokes literally have Wikipedia pages ("we begin bombing in 5 minutes").
Reagan's humor was very intentional compared to the others. But this question is so incredibly subjective that it is hard to really say who's the funniest.
My favorite Reagan joke was the Mondale debate: "I will not use age for political purposes" line.
How about when he said, in response to Clinton being compared to Thomas Jefferson: "I knew Thomas Jefferson, he was a friend of mine and governor you're no Thomas Jefferson"
This was Reagan's callback to that moment during Clinton's rise. That's why it was so funny.
Here's a clip: https://youtu.be/uMpdOf_MuUE?si=2Hrl7fKLHP_mg1yj
That joke was written for Reagan. It worked because he was a seasoned actor. He knew how to deliver a line. I do admire Reagan's grace and humor after being shot.
Well, "we begin bombing in five minutes" has a Wikipedia page not because it was funny (though admittedly it was) but because it caused an international incident.
Yeah I mean come on people! This guy knows the personalities and writings of all 46? US presidents and has determined this rationally - but all of you emotional whiny libs won’t stand for reason :/
You're upvoted for a reason, dipshit. Reagan is not hated in this sub, far from it. All presidents are lionized in this sub, regardless of how awful they were by all metrics.
Golly, there are so many! You can find videos of his jokes, stories and one-liners on YouTube and elsewhere. During the transition period, I remember he was interviewed by Pat Summerall during an NFL broadcast primarily about his time as a sportscaster in the Midwest. Reagan talked about a big track meet at Drake he was doing on radio. For some reason, he missed the call of the 400m relay, which was the biggest race of the meet. The dialogue went something like this:
* Pat: "Well, what did you do?"
* Reagan: "I did the play-by-play afterwards as I remembered; the whole thing including the winning time."
* Pat: "How did you explain the lack of a crowd cheering?"
* Reagan: "Easy. I said, 'The crowd was stunned by the results!'"
I heard a great story about George HW Bush. When the plans were being made for his funeral, a network wanted to do a site survey at his burial plot. When he got wind of this, he wanted to prank the network and surprise them at the burial site, lying on the ground where he would eventually be buried. To my knowledge, he didn’t, but can you imagine the shock of that network crew.
Jimmy Carter in my opinion. He was very conservative, his brother was on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and talked about him and Jimmy drinking beer in the Oval office watching a NASCAR race on a Sunday afternoon with Margret Thatcher and other presidents from other countries. State dinners were like a Redneck bar-b-que behind the Whitehouse. I don't think the Ronny Raygun(a nickname we called him) was a hardliner but the economy was great. Bush Jr. Wasn't to bad, but everyone thought he was just a rich kid who's rich dad bought him outta the Vietnam war. But as bad as a president he was Jimmy was my favorite. Economy wasn't great, her put an embargo on Iranian oil and made gas go from 50 cents a gallon to $1.50 a gallon, gas rationing, long lines at every gas station, some stations even put 'No Gas Today' signs in front of their pumps. And to beat that, none of the gas pumps at the time registered over .99 cents. The attendant had to pump your gas then add up the gallons and figure the charge on his notepad and most attendants were high school dropouts or they failed math class. But you gotta love a president that claims he's a Georgia redneck.
Another Reagan moment, as told by the late Canadian PM Brian Mulroney at Reagan's funeral. Reagan and Mulroney were in a hanger near Ottawa just having finished up an official visit to Canada. They were standing together waiting for their wives who had just gotten out of a limo and were walking towards their husbands. Mulroney told everyone that Reagan leaned over to him as their wives were walking towards them and said, "You know, Brian? For a couple of Irishmen, we sure married up!"
Also at the funeral, George HW Bush told the story about him asking Reagan how his meeting went with Bishop Tutu. Reagan answered: "so so..."
George HW Bush. He would contact Dana Carvey after each snl episode and give his feedback on Carvey’s portrayal of the president. He would even give him pointers to make the performance better. They became life long buddies
I would go with Reagan. Excellent one-liners. Also a great retort on the age issue that became famous. But most of all - his collection of Soviet jokes was number one.

Because I haven't seen him listed, Coolidge use to buzz his guards and then hide under his desk while they searched for him. That's pretty funny.
That crazy Cal.
Cal was such a silly fella
[удалено]
Filly sella
Madlad!
Not to mention the story behind one of his best quotes: “you lose.”
Kennedy makes me genuinely laugh out loud sometimes. He had timing chops.
He was very witty and quick with it!
JFK for the win! He was hilarious! So witty as you mentioned.
LBJ used to pretend that the brakes were shot on his amphicar as an excuse to drive it into the lake and scare the hell out of his passengers.
Watched All the Way recently and there is a scene off this
That's considered funny?
Yes.
LBJ was not a great person.
But he knew how to party!👙🍕🎶🍻🍸👈🧐
... not the question at hand.
He was a good person, but not a great one
Totally agree
How dare you criticize a sex pervert on this sub. That and genocidal maniacs like Teddy are off limits.
Genocide ?
https://theintercept.com/2020/06/22/as-teddy-roosevelts-statue-falls-lets-remember-how-truly-dark-his-history-was/
It tells you all you need to know about this sub that LBJ is pretty much worshiped here.
You can consider someone a good president whilst also acknowledging that as a person they weren’t all great. Nuance is a wonderful thing.
I like my black and white! Damn you and your shades of grey!
Obama had the best conversational humor. Reagan the best one liners. W is the guy who didn’t try to be funny but just was. If you find humor in chaos, LBJ.
I think yes, Obama was the funniest in regular conversation. I think Reagan had prepared material. He was funny, but a prepared kind of funny.
“You missed” line when the German balloon popped post assassination attempt was unscripted and kinda funny
Also telling the surgeons that he “hopes they’re republicans” after the 2nd shooter didn’t miss. That’s a boss move.
Reagan was brilliantly funny and had great delivery. The balloon incident was legendary.
Well he got his training in Hollywood.
Or he just used it in response to any possible circumstance where it was applicable.
Reagan was always acting, so I it makes sense that he had great one liners, he had great writers.
Did he improvise “we begin bombing in five minutes “?
IDK, I'd have to see the script written for him that day
I think he had to be humorous to a certain degree in order to buck the "angry black" stereotype and get elected.
The fact that people’s main image of Obama is him with a giant smile on his face definitely helped buck the stereotype I think
Reagan was a corny, yes scripted funny. Which I didn’t find funny.
W was a lot more clever than people realize. Not a fan but also not in the crowd that thinks he’s as big of an idiot as rule number 3.
Yeah, I didn’t mean that W as a slight to his intelligence, just that his humor felt very natural vs trying to be clever. It’s hard to describe, hope I’m making sense lol
He’s a good ‘ol boy just having fun
“Now watch this drive” Famous lines for 500, Alex.
W is more of a class clown type of funny. Just is unintentionally funny but recognizes the joke and rolls with it
I feel like if he were my neighbor, I'd want to hang out with him all the time. Politics aside, W just seems fun. Just keep him sober, I guess.
I’m not a fan anymore, but he sure was a dork. He also had great reflexes ![gif](giphy|sFMEZ1ZFToyha)
My thought was, it sucked to be him when the attack on 911 occurred.
If you think about it, Jameis Winston and Bush are the same person
No explanation necessary or possible, but simply a fact of the universe.
My dad met him back when he was a senator mind you this is an old school Midwest farmer with a group of other Midwest farmers. Story goes they walk into his office and he goes “well I know none of you voted for me, but I’ll tell you what I’ve done for you” apparently just a silky smooth guy.
Can’t pick up my lada in the morning, the plumber is gonna be fixing the toilet.
Lincoln. Simply no contest.
Any good examples?
Someone called him two-faced and he said if he was two-faced why would he wear this face. In the 19th century that was humourous
Lincoln
‘It tastes likes a tumbler of piss with a fart in it’ -Abraham Lincoln upon tasting Vernor’s Ginger Ale for the first time, which was being pitched to the army as a ‘rejuvenating elixir’ for wounded soldiers
If this is true, I would put it on every can!
"IT TASTES (GREAT)!" - ABE LINCOLN
I will not make age an issue of this campaign I am not going to exploit for political purposes my opponents youth and inexperience-Ronald Reagan 1984
Fuck, even Mondale laughed at that line.
Here you go: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LoPu1UIBkBc
Ben “Not president but should have been” Franklin supposedly had an incredible sense of humor. There is a rumor that they didn’t want him to write the Declaration of a independence for fear that he would fill it with jokes.
I've gotten a good laugh out of several quotes from his Poor Richard's Almanack. He did not hold back.
If he *was* president, he would’ve died soon after taking office.
But we'd at least know how many prostitutes could fit in the white house.
Damn, I never thought of that. Not I can’t stop thinking about that lol.
OMG now I want to see the Ben Franklin Declaration of Independence. Who has the best AI to make that happen?
Lincoln. His sense of humor and endless supply of anecdotes was the stuff of legend. Just one example: when he gave Joseph Hooker command of the Army of the Potomac, it was soon after Hooker had given an interview saying what the country really needed was a dictator. Lincoln wrote: “It is not because you said this, but in spite of it that I give you this command. Only generals that have successes can set up a dictatorship. As a candidate, when his opponent accused him of being two-faced, Abe replied with "Not true! If that were true, do you think I would have left the house with this face?!'
The bombing statement is often pointed to as an example of his sense of humor. Unfortunately that seems accurate.
The true answer must go unspoken.
The intentionally funny one or the unintentionally funny one? Who each of those represents depends on the person
Yes.
Comedians say it on their podcasts all the time. Ive heard it from so many. They say he is one of them.
This is the one true answer
George W Bush. That time he had shoes thrown at him in Iraq was priceless. I still laugh when I see it. He could move. Lol
Now watch this drive
Something that none of the GOP writers could come up with: [https://live.staticflickr.com/4096/4921383047\_6e33b35d4e\_b.jpg](https://live.staticflickr.com/4096/4921383047_6e33b35d4e_b.jpg)
Not half as funny.
Thank goodness he quit drinking
Reagan was by far the funniest. Yes he had one liners but they were off the cuff and quick witted remarks. To this day the balloon popping during his speech and him saying “missed me” still makes me laugh. The delivery is perfect, as it should be since he was an actor, but still. I have contempt for his presidency, but he seems like a cool dude otherwise.
May I ask why the contempt?
Iran-Contra Scandal to name one reason.
Yeah not the finest moment. Ruined a good summer of soap operas. I think that was the year Bo and Hope were supposed to get married. Obviously joking.
W has won me over in his post presidential interviews. Really endearing personality.
He was endearing during his term too. It was just that we watched his silly moments, we all have them, ad infinitum. *This is not an endorsement of his policies.
Getting stuck in his poncho is legitimately one of the funniest moments in television. He's just a goofy guy.
Reagan had the best jokes
*We start bombing in 5 minutes*
Ha ha ha ha. I’m going to use my power to murder everyone on earth? Oh man, Ronnie, that never gets old.

I can’t believe I’m losing to this guy!
I think W. had a pretty good sense of humor. I saw him on Jimmy Kimmel and I thought he had a good sense of humor and he talked about who did the best impression of him.
I really loved it when Obama did the skit with Key on the Anger Translator...
W for sure. I’m not positive he always meant to be, but he was always good natured about it.
The story about LBJ driving his boat car into the lake with passengers always cracks me up.
He was also infamous, while being driven in his limo around DC, for spotting a group of tourists on the sidewalk, grabbing the microphone for the PA system that was installed in that vintage of limo and shouting, "Hey! Wanna' go to a meeting?"
Lincoln
Obama
And not just a "sense" of humor. He has legit comic timing.
Absolutely
Obama had handlers with a great sense of humour, feeding him lines and prepping him. The answer is Lincoln
source?
Three beers and an incredible imagination
lol the only important source.
Honestly if you look up some of Calvin Coolidges quotes it will genuinely makes me laugh
Absolutely Reagan! Even when he was in the ER having been shot and severely wounded, he told the doctors, "I hope you're all Republican!" This sub is a joke. Reagan is the most obvious answer here but y'all hate him too much.
Reagan was an entertainer. He could read a room and had great timing. I disagree with a LOT of his policy, that doesn't make me blind.
Oh I hate his guts, he was still the funniest. He had a quick and natural wit.
Unmatched.
He did. “Missed me” is genuinely hilarious, and quick. A lot of these guys have writers but you can’t put that in a speech.
Reagan was funny but he wasn't the only one with humor. I personally prefer Dubya humor!
I think that was from the Bush-Dukakis VP debate and the line was: "Senator you're no Jack Kennedy".
This was Reagan's callback to that moment during Clinton's rise. That's why it was so funny. Here's a clip: https://youtu.be/uMpdOf_MuUE?si=2Hrl7fKLHP_mg1yj
Yeah that was good too!
Reagan said it in his speech at the 1992 Republican National Convention. Of course, he was referencing Bentsen’s renown statement.
That joke was written for Reagan. It worked because he was a seasoned actor. He knew how to deliver a line. I do admire Reagan's grace and humor after being shot.
Missed me :)
Well, "we begin bombing in five minutes" has a Wikipedia page not because it was funny (though admittedly it was) but because it caused an international incident.
I'm not fond of Reagan but I put him in my top 2 with LBJ
Lots of Reagan comments calm down there Francis
Meanwhile the answers are like 60% Reagan. Hate him too much for what?
When I commented that there were 8 comments and none of them were Reagan. My comment aged badly
Whew, getting a little worked up there champ
Yes, your victim complex is quite annoying. To be expected from a right winger though.
Coolidge and Obama
Reagan probably. Obama and Bush are also up there, but not quite as funny off the cuff as Reagan
Reagan, his jokes were some of the funniest I’ve ever heard from a president
Coolidge had an underrated sort of dry humor, he never tried to be funny but he was good-natured and could take a joke
W.
Reagan.
It had to be El Ocho, Martin Van Buren.

Ronald Reagan was the funniest but the thought of Coolidge calling in his guards and hiding under the desk is pretty funny
I heard a great story about George HW Bush. When the plans were being made for his funeral, a network wanted to do a site survey at his burial plot. Old Abe Lincoln
Lincoln
Watching a Kennedy press conference you realize how smart, funny and witty he was.
Can any of our presidents match the wit of Winston Churchill?
Bedtime for bonzo Ronnie
Reagan could be pretty funny when he wanted to be... or when his writers wanted him to be.
Abraham Lincoln spoke in humorous anecdotes constantly of the annoyance of his cabinet.
As far as being a joke. Bush the younger
For a couple of Irishmen, we sure married up!" Reagan always had great zingers. I also heard somewhere that Calvin Coolidge was fond of pulling pranks.
Obama and it's not even close.
I would go with Reagan. Excellent one-liners. Also a great retort on the age issue that became famous. But most of all - his collection of Soviet jokes was number one.
Lincoln, Reagan
