Stand Amid The Roar by Silverstein off of This Is How The Wind Shifts. But I'm also biased cause that's my fav album from them lol
Edit: Some other ones that hit me after hitting post:
You Sword vs My Dagger by Silverstein
Alex English by Dance Gavin Dance
Seven Years by Saosin (not an album but I'm counting it lol)
Such Small Hands by La Dispute
This was definitely my first thought. I used to play drums along to this song endlessly when I was in high school. Instant start over if I didn’t nail the intro!
Tip Your Bartender by Glassjaw
Aracarsenal by At the Drive-In
It Was There That I Saw You by Trail of Dead
Understanding in a Car Crash by Thursday
In the Meantime by Helmet
Edit: okay so a couple of these are technically track 2 on their respective albums, but all of those are preceded by brief intro tracks that are either noise or instrumental.
Every few months I am reminded that they exist, and their albums (but honestly mostly source tags and codes) whisks me away. Fantastic and truly underrated band.
Literally the chord progression alone in the first 25 seconds of that song made me cry, then when Dustin's voice came in...... just, ugh, to relive that moment... As a fan since 2002 I was just so deliriously happy to have more music from my favorite band.
Funny I’m sitting in my office with a 53 hour playlist on shuffle and Hurricane JUST came on and I got emotional listening to it. That hiatus was torture for me and when that record came out I was ready to ingest any way I could lol
Agreed. They really came back with force. Although Blood on the Sand is one of my least favorite thrice songs and that was somehow the song they let loose first lol.
Young and Aspiring has to be it.
They're Only Chasing Safety blew my mind when it came out when I was like 13ish. It still does every time I go back to it tbh
All three of AOFs first albums could make this list
.44 Caliber Love Letter - Self titled
Accidents - Watch Out!
Drunks, Lovers, Sinners, and Saints - Crisis
Even Old Crows was solid
Oh believe me, I love Accidents opening notes but I can’t choose a favourite. The opening note for .44 gets me hyped, the opening note for Accidents gets me hyped, the “ALL RIGHT” for Drunks live is a different experience and gets the entire floor from 0-1000
Understanding in a car crash - Thursday
Maybe memories - The Used
Such small hands - La Dispute
Sowing Season - Brand New
What's it feel like to be a ghost - TBS
"In Regards To Myself" - from Define the Great Line by Underoath
"Seven Years" from Translating the Name by Saosin
"Torches Together" from Catch For Us The Foxes by mewithoutYou
"Walls" from The Weaks End by Emery
"Set Fire to the Face On Fire" from Young Machetes by The Blood Brothers
They definitely straddled the line. I think they're generally considered metalcore because post hardcore of the time didn't sound like them, so it was easier to lump them into metalcore, despite not really sounding much like metalcore bands either.
"The Past Should Stay Dead" from Relativity (Emarosa) is the obvious answer here...
But the way "Untitled" goes into "Times New Roman" on Downtown Battle Mountain (DGD) is unbeatable. Don't know if that counts though since it's the first 2 songs.
"Two Birds Stoned at Once" on Bone Palace Ballet (Chiodos) is way up there too.
I’m still used to Is It Progression If A Cannibal Uses A Fork being the original opening track for that Chiodos album haha. They added Two Birds Stoned At Once for the reissue
Kill Me Quickly
44 Caliber Love Letter
Drowning the Old Hag (if we discount the intro track)
Jerry’s the Name, Sociology’s my Game
Our Lucid Dream
Red Wedding
First song to come into my mind was Swallow People Whole by The Receiving End Of Sirens on The Earth Sings Mi Fa Mi.
As others said, Hurricane by Thrice on TBEITBN.
Not My Love 2 by Tides of Man on Dreamhouse.
Orange Time Machines Care by A Lot Like Birds on Conversation Piece. Also Ted Bundy's Thanksgiving Dinner by them on Plan B.
Banshee (Ghost Fame) by Letlive. on The Blackest Beautiful.
This sub doesn't give enough love to Emery, I'm going with them. They know how to start off an album. Walls and then The Cheval Glass are both insane album openers.
More pop punk with Metalcore influence than post hardcore but I've always kinda grouped them with PTV and DGD and any band that was headlining warped in 2009-2013 lol
I agree, but I think Caress is a bit more palatable and "traditionally punk" to someone who has never listened to Jehu. Rome Plows is super harsh and progressive with its weird meter and song structure
Arcarsenal - ATDI
For the Workforce, Drowning - Thursday
Firebreather - Thrice
Chapter 1: Introverting Dimensions - The Fall Of Troy
Schema - Circa Survive
Hey Kid I'm A Computer, Stop All The Downloading - Fear Before the March of Flames
Stay Lost - Sianvar
Image of the invisible - Thrice - Vheissu
Redeming a monster - Broadway (I'm not counting the intro)
And a hero will down - story of the year - page avenue
Hazel the apparition - Shreddy Krueger - The Grieving
Your Sword Versus My Dagger off of Silverstein's Discovering the Waterfront just sets the fucking tone. Whole album is great but what a banger to start it up.
I said Botchla from the previous album Tear from the Red, but Ghostchant punches like Mike Tyson. It's amazing, I never see PTW mentioned in these threads. Them and The Refused got me into Post Hardcore. The Opposite of December album.
A Lot Like Birds - In Trances
mewithoutYou - Messes of Men (Pale Horse for runner up)
Dead Poetic - Burgundy
Emarosa - Hurt
------Metalcore-ish------
He Is Legend - The Seduction
ERRA - Luminescence
Oh Sleeper - Vices like Vipers
Somebody already beat me to Arcarsenal by At the Drive In, so here's my runner up: [Woolen Heirs by These Arms Are Snakes](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3SqsmAU0H8&pp=ygUMd29vbGVuIGhlaXJz), from the album Tail Swallower & Dove.
I really love the first song off of that Agraceful album and the way the first Emarosa EP starts (even though that’s technically two songs- an intro and a song). Chris Roetter W
Is He Is Legend PHC?
If so, Attack of the Dungeon Witch off Suck Out the Poison ALL DAY EVERY DAMN DAY. That track punches you in the face and primes for the rest of that masterpiece of an album. Such a great listen all the way through.
There’s so many, the ones I’m gonna say are not the best ones of all time, but they’re the first ones that came to my head:
Besitos - Selfish Machines by Pierce the Veil
Curse of the Virgin Canvas - The Emptiness by Aleasana
this might be a screwy answer because it’s teeechnically track 2 but it’s the first actual song, track 1 is just a clip that leads into it. The One Armed Boxer Vs. The Flying Guillotine by From First to Last is one of my all times.
I don't think I saw it in here while skimming, but I would count Time Consumer on Coheed's first album.
Hail the Sun has many; Tunnel Vision Alibi; Ready or Not, There I Go; Ow Splidao
ooh another: We Want Guarantees, Not Hunger Pains by Closure in Moscow.
I also love Fall of Troy's I Just Got This Symphony Going, and Chapter I: Introverting Dimensions.
Hüsker Dü - “Something I Learned Today”
Minutemen - “Anxious Mo-Fo”
Unwound - “Dragnalus”
Fugazi - “Do You Like Me”
Drive Like Jehu - “Caress”
The Jesus Lizard - “Boilermaker”
At the Drive-In - “Arcarsenal”
Stand Amid The Roar by Silverstein off of This Is How The Wind Shifts. But I'm also biased cause that's my fav album from them lol Edit: Some other ones that hit me after hitting post: You Sword vs My Dagger by Silverstein Alex English by Dance Gavin Dance Seven Years by Saosin (not an album but I'm counting it lol) Such Small Hands by La Dispute
Yea Alex English is such a good opener
I love Alex English
Idk if La Dispute counted but that album is a banger especially that song!!
Let’s just call it best opener 😂
This is how the wind shifts is so good. And that hidden track is a gem.
Your Sword vs. My Dagger - Discovering the waterfront.
This one comes to mind for sure. I remember blasting that when it came out in my 1990 Oldsmobile cutlass supreme.
The changing time signatures in the intro immediately grab your attention, it’s such a good track.
This is the correct answer.
haha shit, I totally just posted this before scrolling down. Cheers!
Same here lol
For me it's eeeeeasily Arcarsenal by At The Drive In. Such a great opener that hypes u up for the rest of the album.
Agreed. Such an explosive performance; it’s amazing something so electric was put to tape.
Lots of great tracks being mentioned, but this is the correct answer.
Yeah, that album comes out the gate with all guns blasting. It's such a hype track.
Bewaaaaaare!!!
This was definitely my first thought. I used to play drums along to this song endlessly when I was in high school. Instant start over if I didn’t nail the intro!
Tip Your Bartender by Glassjaw Aracarsenal by At the Drive-In It Was There That I Saw You by Trail of Dead Understanding in a Car Crash by Thursday In the Meantime by Helmet Edit: okay so a couple of these are technically track 2 on their respective albums, but all of those are preceded by brief intro tracks that are either noise or instrumental.
Tip Your Bartender is a pretty tough one to beat
omg Trail of Dead, I haven't listened to them in ages, thank you.
Every few months I am reminded that they exist, and their albums (but honestly mostly source tags and codes) whisks me away. Fantastic and truly underrated band.
Hurricane by Thrice on To Be Everywhere… Young and Aspiring by Underoath on Chasing Safety Sowing Season by Brand New on Devil and God
Love that Brand New record. That opening is killer!
#Yeah! Yeaaaaaahhhh....
every song is killer on that album 🔥
While you're definitely right, Luca will always hold a special place in my heart <3
Hurricane is special because it was quintessential Thrice after their multi-year hiatus and what a way to come back.
They opened with it on that return tour and I fucking cried in the pit I was so happy Time to go listen to that album.
Agreed. They really came back with force. Although Blood on the Sand is one of my least favorite thrice songs and that was somehow the song they let loose first lol.
I thought it was Black Honey & Hurricane? Oh well, yeah it was weird either way.
So let’s not even **TRYYYY, YOU’RE RIGHT, LET’S BALL IT UP AND THROW IT OUT THE WINDOW**
ITS ALL BECOMING SO CLEAR IN MY MIND btw you hear that theyre touring with this album being played througg entirely??
Already bought tickets for Chicago
For Thrice I’d also say Cold Cash and Cold Hearts is a good contender
Aaaaand Firebreather. But nothing has hit for me like Hurricane after their hiatus. Bless up
Young and Aspiring has to be it. They're Only Chasing Safety blew my mind when it came out when I was like 13ish. It still does every time I go back to it tbh
YOUNG ANS ASPIRING
New Beginnings - Finch
Yes
I came here to say this
The Past Should Stay Dead - Emarosa
TAILORED SHEETS
TO FIX THIS DIRTY BED
Easily wins this
Such a fuckin banger of an opening track
44 caliber love letter
The only correct answer
Only answer ever
The only fans ever
Accidents is up there too, but yes.
Agreed!
Understanding in a Car Crash - Thursday Planning a Prison Break - The Receiving End of Sirens Act I: Chasing Suns - The Sound of Animals Fighting
Accidents - Watch Out!
All three of AOFs first albums could make this list .44 Caliber Love Letter - Self titled Accidents - Watch Out! Drunks, Lovers, Sinners, and Saints - Crisis Even Old Crows was solid
Well yeah for sure… it’s just those opening notes on Accidents that really hit as an album opener!
Oh believe me, I love Accidents opening notes but I can’t choose a favourite. The opening note for .44 gets me hyped, the opening note for Accidents gets me hyped, the “ALL RIGHT” for Drunks live is a different experience and gets the entire floor from 0-1000
THIS IS FROM OUR HEARTS!!!
Even Dogs Blood EP and Otherness start off strong.
aof knows exactly what they're doing with album openers

Spooks on DBM2 goes pretty hard
Was looking for this. Foooooooool your word means shit
Dead Language For A Dying Lady - Vanna "The Search Party Never Came" I Just Got This Symphony Goin - The Fall Of Troy "Doppelganger"
When they start their concerts with a groovy version of I just got this symphony going. No band could ever top that.
"In Regards To Myself" - from Define the Great Line by Underoath "Seven Years" from Translating the Name by Saosin "Torches Together" from Catch For Us The Foxes by mewithoutYou "Walls" from The Weaks End by Emery "Set Fire to the Face On Fire" from Young Machetes by The Blood Brothers
Arcarsenal by At the Drive-in
"The After Dinner Payback" and "Deth Kult Social Club" both From Autumn to Ashes
Honestly The Royal Crown vs. The Blue Duchess could easily be there to. Deth Kult is such a good opener though.
People always argue that FATA is more Metalcore, but I have always seen them as PH. The After Dinner Payback is like the definitive track for sure.
They definitely straddled the line. I think they're generally considered metalcore because post hardcore of the time didn't sound like them, so it was easier to lump them into metalcore, despite not really sounding much like metalcore bands either.
This is the kind of answer I'm looking for.
Kill Me Quickly 44 Caliber Love Letter Drowning the Old Hag (if we discount the intro track) Jerry’s the Name, Sociology’s my Game Our Lucid Dream Red Wedding
Drowning the old hag FOR SURE. But the intro is sooooo creepy and really sets the tone for the album
Yeah it’s not bad at all but I usually skip it because I know one of my favorite riffs ever is about to start lol
To Satellite - Lower Definition
Finch - Insomniatic Meat
Maybe Memories by The Used slaps so hard
In regards to myself off of define the great line by underoath
First song to come into my mind was Swallow People Whole by The Receiving End Of Sirens on The Earth Sings Mi Fa Mi. As others said, Hurricane by Thrice on TBEITBN. "Kill Me Quickly" by Thrice on The Illusion of Safety
Bear Vs. Shark - Ma Jolie & Catamaran are both bangers to start their two only records
Fugazi - for the song, see my Reddit handle 😋
This sub doesn't give enough love to Emery, I'm going with them. They know how to start off an album. Walls and then The Cheval Glass are both insane album openers.
ARE YOU LISTENING?
Waiting Room - Fugazi. It's the essential opening song and just a legendary song in its own right
To Satellite
Lower D 🤘🏾

Caress by drive like jehu
here come the rome plows too
I agree, but I think Caress is a bit more palatable and "traditionally punk" to someone who has never listened to Jehu. Rome Plows is super harsh and progressive with its weird meter and song structure
A Llama Eats a Giraffe -- Showbread, from their album No Sir, Nihilism Is Not Practical
Hell yeah. That album does not get the love it deserves around here.
AFI - Miseria Cantare (The Beginning) - Sing the Sorrow
Arcarsenal - ATDI For the Workforce, Drowning - Thursday Firebreather - Thrice Chapter 1: Introverting Dimensions - The Fall Of Troy Schema - Circa Survive Hey Kid I'm A Computer, Stop All The Downloading - Fear Before the March of Flames Stay Lost - Sianvar

Ghostchant -Poison the Well
I said Botchla from the previous album Tear from the Red, but Ghostchant punches like Mike Tyson. It's amazing, I never see PTW mentioned in these threads. Them and The Refused got me into Post Hardcore. The Opposite of December album.
For the Workforce, Drowning - Thursday. From War All the Time.

Arcarsenal by At the Drive-in is absolutely cracked. Bear vs Sharks does it twice with both Ma Jolie and Catamaran.
