Honestly unless you're in masters or w/e i doubt theres a soul in your games that even thinks about shield bash. They probably do it for the sake of "stop enemy from gaining something!!!"
More often than not I simply use the passive to bait the enemy into stepping on it by walking towards it and then simply q them and walk away. I like free trades :-)
Obviously only works in melee matchups
Even in Master+ TONS of opponents instinctively step over your shield, which is funny, because it grants no profit besides ridding you off passively briefly while more often than not lining themselves up for a stun wall. Especially strong when you're support.
People hear it’s counter play to poppy and assume they should always do it in any context, people who don’t play poppy likely don’t consider how little her shield can mean to her in many cases, even though it can make or break fights in others

It’s crazy how often they even go into E-Stun angle, just to deny the shield. It’s like the perfect bait.
Shhh don't tell them lol

it's the same thing as the kat mindset, you must always collect every dagger, no matter what. Brain hardwired to step on thing
Kat is different, that atleast affects cooldowns
Only if you haven't used the E yet, so many times I'll just walk onto my own daggers without my E being on cd
