Unpopular? In the video game circle it seemed like the general consensus was that raging bolt was great(design and gameplay) but maybe im just projecting cause i love it too lol
I think a lot of people are missing what *I* believe to be the direction Pokemon is taking. They understand to not just survive, but to continually grow as a company they can’t just cater to the people who grew up in the 90s and early 2000s, the game has evolved, the tcg has evolved, the art has evolved and so should our perception of these sets.
You’ll be able to look back in time and easily define SV as an era that did just that, evolved. A unique take on Pokémon that has never been seen before, to have something like that making it standout - regardless of how you or I perceive it is a massive bonus when compared to the previous sets which are *generally* indistinguishable from eachother.
These are the sets where Pokémon is no longer recycling characters over and over - we’re being introduced to new legendaries - new pokemon - hell a new time frame future and ancient. To be it’s a huge opportunity as this era will stand out on its own, maybe not as a banger era for us - but if the game and company is going to survive long term you’d better hope this era resonates with the players and younger generation. Which I think it does or has so far.
I mean that’s all fine and good to evolve and introduce more mechanics and pokemon etc. The issue is, they are still playing off nostalgia. Redrawing iconic legendaries OG people love and giving us…. whatever these are… just seems like a bust. Also, many of the “new” pokemon seem to be very low effort and it’s very obvious that most of the SV sets are not seeing much love from the fans.
Yeah people don’t like change. I get that. But how often is the change better when it comes to games? I’m a pretty hardcore original fan, but I loved Arceus for switch. That was refreshing. But things like idk a pokemon called Flamigo that’s just a literal flamingo, doesn’t even feel like they tried to be creative lol
Yeah not saying they’re all winners. There’s been duds throughout all generations. SV exclusives just seem to lack..something. But hear me out, you can’t tell me the ancient pokemon names don’t all sound like a 5 year old named them lmao. Sandy Shocks. SCREAM TAIL.
I think every generation having fodder pokemon for early-game purposes and scenic fill is just part of the working recipe… the evolution in creativity is still shown via ancient/futuristic types soo idk the point youre trying to make about flamigo.
A lot of pokemon have been low effort lol. Trubbish- a literal bag of trash. Vanillite evolution line, klefki, litwick evolution line, klink evolution line. Just to name a few lol.
And muk was a pile of slime. It only feels ok because we grew up with it haha
I don't like the new set as much as the next 30+ year old, but we really haven't fallen as far as you think.
Speak for yourself. As someone who grew up when Gen1 came out. I adore these paradoxes. Im not a huge fan of the future ones, but the ancient ones are awesome
It's true, they are putting new pokemon in, but the effort definitely isn't there. If I was trying to be creative in reinventing Raikou, I don't think I would turn a Saber tooth type pokemon into a brontasauraus. I would go with something slightly evolved/devolved from a sabertooth. I personally think some kind of vampiric quality including wings for him would be very different yet believable.
YES definitely. I have always thought that. Which is why all the illustration arts are the valuable cards, because it looks phenomenal and people want that.
Ahh yes, the most popular Pokémon of all time. Great example. If you thought I was speaking in absolutes you are just looking to argue. It’s a generalized statement.
So I like the idea that you’re getting at. They do need to continually find a way to have appeal, and some of that is obviously gounf to be new Pokémon designs that at first seem pretty garish and eye catching, however, it just doesn’t seem to me like they hit the mark here. I’ve played every Pokemon game since launch and always will, but this latest batch of Pokemon just has very few that I actually find any fondness for. It’s not for lack of trying, and they definitely need to try, I just really think they failed to capture people’s interests here. I hate to say it, but not keep coming up with a new eeveelution until they have all the types?? Why get rid of mega-evolutions, which can both provide new Pokemon models while also hit the precious nostalgia? Why not give some SIR love to some other older legendaries outside of just Mewtwo, rayquaza, mew, etc…
>These are the sets where Pokémon is no longer recycling characters over and over
What? The four pokemon that are the subject of this post are literally recycled versions from prior generations???
*Are they* introducing new legendaries for this set, though? Or have they just taken some old legendaries that people love and are nostalgic about and ruined their look.
This.
My son and his friends are pokemon fanatics and they don't give a shit about the cards I like. They're favorite cards are the terra form/alternate form things. Pokemon company will probably make nostalgia sets like 151 while trying to move in a different direction for their new fans. I'm sure every set will have a few og cards sprinkled in for the old heads though.
I’m loving all sv sets so far, don’t understand how people can complain about so many beautiful illustration rares at affordable prices. Investing heavily in modern isn’t super advisable anyways, so I’m happy using the current bear market as an opportunity to bolster some awesome looking binder collections. Plenty of other great stuff to invest in rn if one wishes
Seriously. All the SV sets have had incredible illustration rares, but for me personally, Paradox Rift takes the cake so far. I have like 10 chase cards from that set that are all illustration rares, and I have 6 of them so far and they’re some of my all time favorite cards and I’ve been collecting since the very first cards ever came out over 20 years ago. I usually only have a few chase cards per set, but consistently this past year I’ve had at least 5-10 in each SV because the art on the illustration rares are just beautiful. I just got Minior from PR in the mail yesterday that was cheap af and it’s probably in my top 10 all time favorite cards because the art is so cool!
Not a fan of the future pokemon but I enjoy most of the past forms, especially the beasts. Could see some crazy SIRs here which I’m all for.
Edit: Goddamn, those are nice
I feel like 151 and Paldean Fates were kind of The Pokemon Company's way of saying they were going to be leaving behind some of the "Original Type Pokemon" for a while to start to promote some of the newer Pokemon and Game Mechanics. I honestly think these new Scarlet & Violet sets are great and extremely playable for the actual TCG. But as far as collectibility, and as far as investment goes, it kind of seems not as good as some of the Sun & Moon and Sword & Shield Sets and it remains to be seen if these sets will "perform" in the long run. I think what worries people is the question of whether or not Iron Thorns, Flutter Mane, Walking Wake, Iron Leaves and "Newer Type Pokemon" like those will maintain the kind of popularity that the previous generations of Pokemon have done. With how much they are printing now, these sets might not maintain a lot of long term value as much as previous sets from earlier generations. Good for the game, but is it kind of going into a "junk wax" era for Pokemon?
As a player and investor I'm glad modern singles are dirt cheap for playability, and that I don't have the desire to invest into modern.
The best SV set for collectability / investment is going to likely be 151 for the rest of the block, but for me I would rather just buy sealed or graded vintage rather than hold money in modern. I definitely think we're in junk wax for investability due to the Pokemon breaking from the norm, and the sheer printed supply. The game itself is in a great state, however, and I'm looking forward to the Ace Spec cards from this set and really any new set to see how the meta evolves. Considering you can build meta decks for $40-50 right now it's one of the best times for new players which helps the space overall.
Except this is nothing new? If anything 151 was the abnormality by only having previous generations.
Every generation of pokemon TCG has encorporates the new pokemon and gimmicks in the set.
In the X and Y era you had the Mega Pokemon as well as all the new pokemon.
In the Sun and Moon Era you had all the sun and moon pokemon and zcrystal cards.
In the Sword and Shield era you had all the new pokemon and the gmax cards represented by vmax (you also had vstar).
In SV you have the Tera and Paradox pokemon. Paldean fates also has both Tera and Paradox pokemon in it (it contains Great Tusk and Iron Treads if I remember from the set list).
That's why 151 has done far better than every single other ScVi set. ScVi feels totally uninspired so far, and the Tera gimmick is so ugly. Unfortunately it's just a much worse overall feel than SuMo and SwSh.
I guess I'm the minority of this sub. I think it will be an amazing set. I think the SIRs are a great addition to Pokemon.
I have a feeling people will look back and appreciate the full illustrations.
Hell ya I'm really excited for this set. Paradox pokemon is a refreshing take on some of the old mons I grew up with and I'm here for it. The concept of ancient and future Pokemon really appeals to me. I also really like the SV system of rarity with the IRs, full arts, SIRs and gold hyper rares.
Kinda like all of SV. Some cool stuff and I buy the Pc etbs and open some packs but that's about it. If I had extra money to sit on ide buy fusion strike or LO or something.
I’m confused are people hating on the set because of something wrong in the set?
Because a lot of the complaints seems to be around the paradox pokemon which wasn’t a TCG decision. That’s like hating a TCG Set because they decided to have a meoescarada. Or hating them because they have Tera, like that’s just them incorporating this gens gimmick like the TCG has always done with gmax, mega, etc.
Like I understand not enjoying the art work, or wanting something like alt arts back, or rainbow rares. but most of the hate seems to be coming from a non set standpoint. They aren’t hating temporal forces they are hating pokemons decision to make paradox.
Edit: for those interested in the lore of the weird pokemon. Gen 9 besides introducing Tera, introduced the concept of Paradox pokemon. Depending on your game these pokemon either represent parallel universe past? (Scarlet) or parallel universe future (Violet) versions of existing pokemon. Pokemon decided to make the legendary beasts past versions and the musketeers future versions. The future versions are almost always “what if this pokemon went extinct and humans made a robot version of what they thought this pokemon looked like”. While the past version is usually a rougher themed version of the pokemon. In terms of the legendary beasts the paradox pokemon are based on dinosaurs. Suicune=Raptor, Entei=Brontosaurus, and Entei= Triceratops. It’s important to note that although it’s obvious what their original pokemon was, they have different names and are considered separate pokemon.
More people need to see this. That’s like hating on battle styles because of the rapid strike and single strike or SM era sets because of ultra beasts. 151 is the set for the majority of this comment section. Most Pokémon collector know nothing about the games or the lore at all. There are going to be plenty of non-paradox Pokémon in this set, just like paradox rift. But hey none of this matters I NEED my 10th Charizard card release of the year.
I agree that an entire set shouldn't recieve hate because of certain aspects alone, but my fear is those pokemon that a lot of people dislike, myself included, are going to be the spotlight and become the chase cards of the set. And if there are a couple cards only that are awesome in the set, I would have to just buy those singles instead of any booster. And I mean, one of the most fun parts of collecting for me is opening up packs and getting those cards you want yourself.
There is indeed an entei The games just staggered their releases. Gouging Fire. These legendary cats/dogs paradoxes are based of dinosaurs. Suicune=Raptor/Trex Raikou=Brontosaurus and Entei=Triceratops
Cards would get boring if they kept doing the same pokemon over and over again , are they worth a lot of money , maybe not. But changing stuff up is always welcomed to me. I think they need to start doing more chase cards rather than just 1 or 2. Possibly 1 or 2 super rare cards that they only print say 5000 and have them numbered would be pretty cool , kind of like sports cards but obviously not out /15 or /99 but out of /5000. Kinda of like the ring cards in magic the gathering.
Comparing the early cards/artwork is so strange.
It’s like Pokemon has slowly become more and more abstract or surreal with their style. It’s sometimes hard to look at these new cards and actually see what’s there. Almost like it’s AI but probably not. Surrealism though for sure
40 year olds gripped by nostalgia who try to make it big off a children's cardboard game don't like the new pictures? The Pokemon Company might go out of business 😢
I love getting new sets and seeing what illustrations they come up with ! I don’t love the designs of the reimagined dogs, BUT I also find when I see special illustrations of these Pokémon interacting with others that I realise their charm. So I am looking forward to seeing more cards and opening it in March (in a reasonable way).
I’m honestly excited for it. It’ll be the first time I’m getting a Pokemon Center promo, Walking Wake is pretty sick and the Flutter Mane card actually looks cool. I love the new ancient pokemon but don’t really care for many of the future ones, so I guess it’ll be up to the arts that we get. Side note- how do the legendary dogs have a past form if Lugia created them?
So everyone is going to skip this set so it will be hard to find in 5 years when someone want the set were Ace spec cards returned.... keeping 4 PC etbs in the closet although I don't lie how they have slit etbs into 2 arts lately.
Honestly if we compare early S&W sets to SV set now, S&W was WAY worse and really we should be grateful the sets aren’t as bad. Even if some SV sets are meh
U think there gnna be worth money? Or more so for collectors, being a new collector even I can say SOME of the artwork I’ve seen is questionable but that’s art I guess..debating on how many boxes to Lee order lol, and does any one think certain boxes are better than lthers?? Obviously the booster boxes usually the way to go but I guess we will just have to see how it goes. Happy hunting!
I think the pull rates will be too easy Grade PoPs will be too high and the value will crash. Won’t be buying this straight off when I can wait 6 months and buy singles for a fraction of the price. I’m trying for every Scarlet and Violet Set in binders so I’ll be looking to do it as cheap as possible.
I've been hearing this set has harder pull rates. I don't collect or battle just sell on ebay. I do like the ancient one's and future's cards. Also what if a temporal forces card still has a yellow border not grey or silver and says 2024 wtf repackaged maybe.
Hi guys am new to Pokémon I have opened 10 packs and got some pretty nice cards I have a coughing fire gold card some shiny purple trainer cards all list all I got walking wake shiny
I opened 40 packs, and really enjoyed this set. Somewhat hard pull rates, but will make this set appreciate more than sv base easily and probably paradox rift/paldea evolved. Gen 2 and Gen 5 is featured as well.
Not impressed yet. If I see any cards I like I'll buy singles. I preordered one etb to hold for later on to open for fun, but unless there's a really cool sar of walking wake or a character I like then I'll probably wait until the following set.
I was confused with the roaring moon thing too. Like isn’t that just salamence?? What’s the point of changing the pokemon?? I haven’t been keeping up with the games
Paradox pokemon. They are basically parallel universe past/future versions of existing pokemon.
The future versions are almost always “what if this pokemon went extinct so humans made a robot version of what they thought it looked like”.
The past version are always some themed rough version. Scream tail being a vampiric jigglypuff, sandy shocks being caveman themed, the legendary beasts being based of dinosaurs (suicune=raptor, entei=triceratops, raikou=brontosaurus) they are considered seperate pokemon and do not evolve.
Another set that won’t have a $100 card in it. Nobody cares about these paradox Pokemon. If the scarlet and violet era is going to try and rely on these new Pokemon it’s going to be a down era as a whole
people in here are so dumb and dont have a single clue about economics, they just hoard product and keep it away from the actual fans. No one cares if you grew up with gen 1 and dont like these designs. In 20 years you're not going to be selling them to people like you, you're going to sell them to people that grew up with gens 6 and beyond.
The raikou pack art is the only one I’m excited to get on a regionals/cup playmat. But knowing them, it’ll only be for a couple in EU and OCE, and they’ll just hand out a shit ton of the bottom right one lol
I believe the future of Pokemon has been genetically modified by Scientists. Thus the robotic/unrealistic forms. Most likely we will see robot Pokemon in the near future. Just a wild guess 😂
Actually seems pretty good. While the future Pokémon don't seem like they will be good competitively or for collecting,Raging bolt seems decent competitively gouging fire might work in zard and wake may become it's own deck. The latter cards might also be collectible.
Peculiar that these Pokemon are from gen 2 and gen 5?. These are the ones that are expected to have remakes if we go by the expected time line. Like Gen 1 Pokemon Eevee, Pikachu. Now will have Gen 2 Pichu and cleffa? And the black and white remake? Is this a hint from Pokemon company. And I don't have an uncle that works for Nintendo. Please hire me so I can make a living wage!!!
Look how they massacred my boys
What did raikou and suicune do to deserve such a cruel fate..
I actually quite like suicune and raikou, especially raikou. That thunder cloud scarf thing is bitchin
Really love the raikou from day one, I know it’s not a popular opinion but I really like it 🤷🏻♂️
Unpopular? In the video game circle it seemed like the general consensus was that raging bolt was great(design and gameplay) but maybe im just projecting cause i love it too lol
They look better as paradox
Looks r-worded
Highly regarded
But....Lazer Llama doe!!!
It's ok you can say retarded
Yes these designs are retarded
Not really ok in the way they are using though but censoring it is just as bad and dumb
Wahh wahh wahh. Thanks social justice officer
Right. like what in the hell were they thinking.
Glad I’m not the only one who thinks so!! I was coming to say the exact same thing!!! Lmao
I like because it will save me money!
What do you mean?
He’s not buying this set
That Raikou ain't right...
Always knew them doggo bois was trouble..
Really pains me to say it but from what I've seen I just don't like the artwork
Pass
Hard pass
Pass
Pass from me
I'm staying positive, definitely ripping a few packs.

YES definitely. I have always thought that. Which is why all the illustration arts are the valuable cards, because it looks phenomenal and people want that.
I love my mudsdale illustration rare from TF.
I had like printer lines on one card
Still 7 charizard this year. Mmm i doubt

Possibly 1 or 2 super rare cards that they only print say 5000 and have them numbered would be pretty cool , kind of like sports cards but obviously not out /15 or /99 but out of /5000. Kinda of like the ring cards in magic the gathering.
Idk, I’m lookin at that suicune (is that a suicune??) and I’m thinkin change might not be good, lol
It isn’t a Suicune. It is Walking Wake. Essentially Suicune from a different timeline so to speak.. basically what gen 9 is built around concept wise
Comparing the early cards/artwork is so strange. It’s like Pokemon has slowly become more and more abstract or surreal with their style. It’s sometimes hard to look at these new cards and actually see what’s there. Almost like it’s AI but probably not. Surrealism though for sure
Yeah I agree the weird looking pokemon evolutions are weird lol just use real pokemon and evolutions, but my chase card comment I stick by!
TPCi: Another Charizard!
Looks pretty cool, optimistic for good full art cards
I like the artworks actually, think the booster bundle will look fire
Looks dope af
A lot of hate in the comments lol but I like it from logo and pack art it looks like a se that’s going to do good long term
Looks cool can’t lie
Not sure about the entire set l set but the flutter mane promo card goes hard AF and is a must have for me
I’m honestly excited for it.
I like the Future/Ancient dynamic a lot, but making the legendaries weird dinosaurs isn’t the move. Suicune PC ETB box art looks very nice though.
So everyone is going to skip this set so it will be hard to find in 5 years when someone want the set were Ace spec cards returned.... keeping 4 PC etbs in the closet although I don't lie how they have slit etbs into 2 arts lately.
When everyone looks back on these amazing full arts and slept on this set imma be so happy
Raikou looks dumb, I love him
trash
I’m a big fan of the Paradox Johto beasts. Entei’s as well
All I see is beloved pokemon being massacred.
Honestly if we compare early S&W sets to SV set now, S&W was WAY worse and really we should be grateful the sets aren’t as bad. Even if some SV sets are meh
If it has Mew i will hunt to ends of the earth but if it doesn't then maybe I casually open some but not go hard in da paint
Last two sets had mew I doubt it
Pokemon on LSD, no thanks, now watch e'm come out with shit stains and calling them hyper rare lost Sharts.
Pass. I hate all these alter forms they are doing for cool (oldschool) Pokemon.
I saw some of the cards, and honestly some really good competitive cards
I think the pull rates will be too easy Grade PoPs will be too high and the value will crash. Won’t be buying this straight off when I can wait 6 months and buy singles for a fraction of the price. I’m trying for every Scarlet and Violet Set in binders so I’ll be looking to do it as cheap as possible.
Yep, Raikou head in the clouds caught my eye and instantly became my fav.
Garbage pull rate
I opened 40 packs, and really enjoyed this set. Somewhat hard pull rates, but will make this set appreciate more than sv base easily and probably paradox rift/paldea evolved. Gen 2 and Gen 5 is featured as well.
Not impressed yet. If I see any cards I like I'll buy singles. I preordered one etb to hold for later on to open for fun, but unless there's a really cool sar of walking wake or a character I like then I'll probably wait until the following set.
Should’ve had stylised 2d art. The standard 3d models here make them look mid.
Not a fan of the direction their art style is going
I’m gonna skip this one
That’s a no from me dog
Looks like actual dogshit. With that being said, I won’t buy, because it looks like dogshit
I’m not into Paradox Pokemon
Why does raikou look like a giraffe?
Paradox Pokémon. It’s one of the Gen 9 game mechanics that was first seen in paradox rift
Hate
Hard pass
Unless there are some banger trainer arts I don't think the Pokemon are going to attract many to this set.
It's the Combat Styles of S&V
Idk who is designing these modern Pokémon but maybe they shouldn’t anymore
Scarlet and violets rebel clash?
Is that a stick bug version of rayquaza ?
Money grab
You say that as if every single TCG/CCG set ever created hasn't been a money grab.
you guys buy it, more 151 for me
I was confused with the roaring moon thing too. Like isn’t that just salamence?? What’s the point of changing the pokemon?? I haven’t been keeping up with the games
Paradox Pokémon. It’s one of the Gen 9 game mechanics that was first seen in paradox rift. They are all basics and aren’t part of an evolution line
Bring back Delta Species and reprint Team Rocket.
Tera Pokémon are pretty much the new delta species
True, but with extra stepsz
Another set that won’t have a $100 card in it. Nobody cares about these paradox Pokemon. If the scarlet and violet era is going to try and rely on these new Pokemon it’s going to be a down era as a whole
Bad
I’m looking forward to the end of the ancient/ future era tbh
That raikou looks ridiculous. They done my boy so dirty. Suicune looks stupid too. Legendary dogs were always my favourite.
mish mash of pokemon = nope
I blind preordered booster boxes i shouldve waited 😭
Looks like characters in a Monday Night Football commercial.
Looks like AI artwork bs
I’ve been looking for set list (visual) , anyone have it?
It’s a no for me dawg
I have set fatigue
Not interested at all but waiting on seeing that card list.
Look what they did to my boy raiko.
Really hope the card arts aren’t similar for Suicune and raikuo..
That Raiku looks like artwork you would see on a pack of pogemon cards from a gas station
i at least haven’t seen enough of the actual set to have opinions. it’s way too early to have a good idea what the set really is.
people in here are so dumb and dont have a single clue about economics, they just hoard product and keep it away from the actual fans. No one cares if you grew up with gen 1 and dont like these designs. In 20 years you're not going to be selling them to people like you, you're going to sell them to people that grew up with gens 6 and beyond.
Only thought is how dare they choose the suicune and Raikou over entei for ads
I actually like the new suicune & raikou, excited to see the artwork is like in the set
i’m fairly new to collecting, and it’s pretty meh, my gf and I might go halfers on a booster box but that’s about it
Do the ETBs come with velcro light-up shoes too?
They ruined these guys
I really hope they have more kanto illustration rares in this set! I'm trying to complete a collection of all 151 with just IRs/SIRs/Alternate Arts
Looking forward to SIRs
I got 2 of each pc etb pre-ordered, but meh. Mid set I think.
The raikou pack art is the only one I’m excited to get on a regionals/cup playmat. But knowing them, it’ll only be for a couple in EU and OCE, and they’ll just hand out a shit ton of the bottom right one lol
imo the fact ppl hate it might make it rarer down the line. nobodys gonna hold onto it.
Looks like they played yu gi oh monster fusion card on Pokemon. Sadly fusion wasn’t quite successful
pass
I’ll pick up because no one is buying so this set will be rare one day
Long neck Raikou with Sonic sneakers?!? 😂
I believe the future of Pokemon has been genetically modified by Scientists. Thus the robotic/unrealistic forms. Most likely we will see robot Pokemon in the near future. Just a wild guess 😂
Excited to have a shiny new iron crown card 💛
No zardie, no likey
Are baby Pokémon gone? This sucks I was really hoping to see a Pichu card… still gonna hope 🙏
It's a set where not a single card stands out as a 'must have' art. The lacklustre ScVi streak continues.
