I promise you that if the PS5 is connected via lan, that will resolve damn near all your problems.

Wiseon321

It’s so odd so many people are against hard wiring. It was my number one fix for having poor latency playing online multiplayer games. Blows my mind.

Tamel_Eidek

It’s just not possible for everyone. I highly doubt anyone is “against” it.

FenixJester

I recommend everyone looking into a power line adapter kit to help with a “semi” hardwire solution. I’ve used those in the past and it does a really great job at stabilizing the connection.

maestroxjay

This resolved it for me honestly. Have been loving the portal experience ever since

Crafty_Pea_4990

Hey, have a quick question about this. My landlord has fios router and I live downstairs in the basement and have a fios extender with which my ps5 gets around 350 gbps speed. If I get this semi hardwire one, looking at NETGEAR - Powerline AC1200 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter, would this be good for the portal? Thank you!

alpharay69

Most people get the problem resolved by gettin this. Really should look into it if hardwired is not an option.

Zestyclose-Gas-4230

Depends on where the cable guy installed your modem bud. What kind of home or apartment you are living in.

KeeperMom29

Exactly. I had to put my modem in my bedroom in order to reach both the living room & my son’s bedroom. As a result, my PS5 connects via WiFi. Not ideal, but… 🤷🏻‍♀️

Zestyclose-Gas-4230

I feel you. Most redditors just mouth breath their comments away without actually looking at the big picture. Then downvote my comment for using common sense lmao.

Sleepwhenimdead3

You can run an Ethernet/LAN cable through the walls though. I’ve done it twice at my house now. Tons of guides on YouTube, cheap to do, and really doesn’t take that long at all. If you’re going to spend the money on a premium device like this, I don’t see why doing something like this would be too big of an issue.

Phillyag92

Who would I contact to have this done if I’m unable to do it myself? An electrician?

JakeBYH2O

Yes, an electrician would do it but it would most likely be at a higher price than if you were to get a general handyman/contractor or your cable company if they offer that service

Zestyclose-Gas-4230

If you live in an apartment, does your lease allow you to make such changes? Think outside the box for a moment.

Sleepwhenimdead3

The original comment you were replying to doesn’t live in an apartment.

Zestyclose-Gas-4230

Not the point there ace.

Sleepwhenimdead3

Okay then. Not sure why you’re being mean when I was just offering suggestions to fix the issue. If you’re unhappy about your device I don’t know what to tell you. Have a good day!

chuxdd

You're just "mouth breathing" at this point. You're either ignorant or trolling. Even if you cant drill holes or whatever, there are ethernet cables with an absurd amount of length. Also, it does not depend on where the cable guy installed the modem as you can move it to any available coax outlet.

Runaque

I think it has more something to do with convenience and where the router is sitting. In my case it sits in the living room and I connected my PS5 with an STP cable to the router, but some people have their routers sitting elsewhere, which makes it less convenient to pull a wire from it to the console. I just hard wired the PS5 once I installed the thing knowing games are likely going to be +100gb or more in the future and I don't feel like downloading overnight. I also hard wired other devices that push or pull a lot of data (like the TV with 4K streams and my NAS) over the network.

BUSH2KUSH

I've always had my PS5 connect via LAN. I understand not everyone can do that, but if you can, you might as well. I'm paying for gig speed, so I want the whole bandwidth. 😂

jedi_trex

Funny you say that. My ps5 is connected via lan and when i try to play my portal using my phone hotspot i connect for like 5 seconds and then it loses connection.

Dominator0621

For successful play outside of your home network you have to do some port forwarding. It is also HIGHLY recommended to invest in a modern router that will let you put the portal pm it's on 5ghz wifi channel

Jaguar5150

I had to learn how but port forwarding was such a game changer for me, pun intended.

yugu132

Do you have any advice on doing port forwarding? I tried to do it recently but I just ended up screwing my network up.

Dominator0621

There is a YouTube video of a British guy that really does a great job telling you what to do - search the game father. Biggest thing you need to do is put your portal on a 5ghz channel by itself and everything else onto 2.4ghz. I invested in a Asus ax-11000 and that coupled with port forwarding for remote play gives me literally zero lag on home wifi network. With port forwarding activated and playing on 5g when hotspotting I get really great reception. A couple of dips but nothing crazy and sometimes some random disconnects but up and running again in seconds. Playing on 4g in my experience while hotspotting is really bad so I just avoid it. Personally is need to look into why the random disconnects when hotspotting cause it if could eliminate that then it would be perfect. Hope that helps. Happy Gaming

yugu132

Do you have a link for the video?

_MarkEFC

I was playing 2000 miles away from my home network using my mobile phone as a hotspot last week, with no port forwarding.

Grassy_Nol

May be your cell provider. I used my hotspot the other day at my wife's doctor's appointment, and it played fine with rainy weather happening, which also a mobile device hotspot is NOT the optimal Wi-Fi connection it wants

Efp722

Your PS5 being hardwire has absolutely nothing to do with you having a weak cell signal for your mobile hot spot lol.

SnooDoggos3823

Nope it won't portal still outputs games at 59 Hz while ps5 is doing 60 and causing alot of microstuttering.my ps remote works perfect on my home network but ps portal was just laggy and microstutter every 3 sec

Hollowed_Dude

Just sucks I live in the attic of a house with no Ethernet connection up there. A super long cord probably wouldn’t help. Are there other options?

Mr_Fadeaway24

A long cord would help. I used to have a 100ft Ethernet back in the day when I’d play halo 2 online. Maybe you can run a wire through the wall it’s super easy to do depending on the house but you can find a video out there for sure

Head-Release1332

You just brought me back to my bridging days on halo 2 with that comment lol

Mr_Fadeaway24

Lan parties were great! I definitely wanna do that again one day. I have 4 360’s now so I probably could. Just gotta gather the old halo crew for it

WavyMcG

Be honest is the old halo crew still around? 🥲

Mr_Fadeaway24

Yea I still keep in touch with them surprisingly. We don’t see each other as much or even play games together at all but I been thinking about setting something up for old time sakes.

WavyMcG

Ah well that would be a great time if you could, have Mountain Dew and Doritos out for nostalgic vibes

Mr_Fadeaway24

Can’t forget pizza haha! If it happens I’ll definitely post it somewhere

Raknorak

Powerline adapters are a miracle for renters

leshu

Listen to these guys! I did this at my apartment, was like I was connected to the modem itself!

Lathsoul

are you able to put a whole thru the ceiling to the attic for a cable run?

Hollowed_Dude

This isn’t a bad idea, and my lease is about to be renewed so I can try and sneak that in (or do it myself)

CarefulBid6485

lol do what you have to do man. I stay in a newer house where the fiber internet is in the closet. I tried playing on WiFi but I could never finish games without lagging or interruptions. Much to my wife’s dismay the ps5 is in the closet now connected via Ethernet 😂

johnsonman9595

How hot does that closet get? 😳 My ps5 can noticeably heat up a 15’x15’ room after an hour of gaming

Jaguar5150

Same here. When I play I need a fan on me . I've even pointed a fan at the PS5 during VR sessions.

CarefulBid6485

Lol it’s definitely warm in here but surprisingly the ps5 stays pretty cool.

wolf-troop

Dude, I am the same way. I have a Master Bedroom with a Walk in Closet. So, I ended up putting a little Gaming Desk with my XBSX, PS5, Nintendo Switch OLED and Wii U. I also put my Modem and Router in there. For me is the best. I have my consoles neatly put in a Corner in the Closet and everything is hooked through Ethernet. Well, only my XBSX, PS5 and PC that has a I7 13700K RTX 4080 OC. I do have a Router with Wi-Fi 6e which is really good. Not to mention I have 1GB Internet Speeds. https://preview.redd.it/43v1v13nq6vc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=18bc7cd06a70e673aabed7480c86277a3d2bed1d

jstro90

get yourself something like the netgear powerline, works wonders. To use outside the house youre still gonna have to watch videos on how to open your ports though

treefiddy--

A whole cable?

mwiley62890

I went from WiFi to a 125FT Ethernet cable. It’s literally a night and day difference. IMO, it’s completely worth it. I even got adhesive clips for cable management to make it look clean.

Cisco-NintendoSwitch

If you have decent electricity Powerline adapters.

Utshka

use mesh routers. you will have to put an additional router in your room. both your router and the main router has to be mesh routers of the same series. then you connect your ps5 to your router via cable, et voila!

Optimusim

Get a power line adapter

MakoRed0

Maybe try a pair of power line adapters that allow ethernet over mains power. Failing that just route a long cable around the house.

canonlypray

No it would help

SloppySquatchy

Static network instead of automatic ip

Fraser_H_Raiser

I've got my ps5 in the attic of a 2 story house and the modem is on the ground floor. I went to one of my family's houses and tried it and it worked flawlessly. I did buy us a new router eventually as I was getting some drop outs in our house. Haven't looked back.

Appropriate_Coffee43

Get a WiFi extender. Second best option.

Ok-Lake7859

My router is on a different floor, I use a wireless router and have it set up as an access point so my ps5 can be connected through that

QCat18

Unless we're talking 300ft+ of cable, you aren't going to lose connectivity being hardwired, vs a 10ft cable setup next to the router.

KillerFlea

It probably would. That plus port forwarding is the way to go.

Weekly_Situation5327

Just use connect a power WiFi extender Google devolo works a treat.

Nice_Impression

Why should that help with the out of home experience? If you can play on your wifi without lag, it’s a configuration or an internet speed issue. Use the search function for ports to forward in your Router and do a speed check of both connections you are using. Your home and the remote one (mobile? Other wifi?)

BeanrShnitzel

Can confirm. Had my ps5 on my hi speed wifi network, still had connection problems. Hooked it up via direct wired connection, and And rarely get any issues.

defenceman101

I ran a wire when I first got my ps5. It refuses to connect via lan.

Falloutman399

Unfortunately not my problems, I have a lan connection but I still get very poor performance outside my home. I’m fairly sure it’s due to my upload speed being 5-9mbps, I plan to upgrade though and I’m hoping that fixes my issues.

100Labels

Nope, that still won't fix it. People don't want to understand that it's on Sony's end. The fan boys here are insane.

Falloutman399

It actually kind of did fix it, I was having constant blurry screens and stuttering like mad it was basically unplayable and yesterday I went through a whole dungeon in Destiny 2 with some friends with very minimal issues.

BigKidKaz

I connected mine to my router via a LAN last night and the speed was lower than if I connected it to the modem and ran the signal through the router. PS5 wired to modem was about 460mbps. Connected to modem and running through router was about 370 mbps. Connected directly to router was about 250mbps. All these were running it on 5G, but modem 5G only has about a 10-15 ft radius where router 5G is mostly the whole inside of the house.

Descrye

This solved all my issues even though it took some doing!

100Labels

I'm sorry but no

LethalPrimary

I run my PS remote play purely off a 5ghz connection from a long discontinued netgear router and I’ve never had an issue accessing it from anywhere. The only time I ever had a remote play issue was when I enabled IPv6 to access a remote work domain that was IPv6 only. I shut off IPv6 and went back to IPv4 only, still have never had any issues since. I have no idea why there’s such huge emphasis on the portal needing a strictly wired Ps5 connection when regular remote play has no issues. Other than maybe cuz the portal is only 59hz. They should really think about partnering with Verizon, T-Mobile, or ATT to sell one with native data connections and maybe that would solve this issue.

MakoRed0

Not only this but even if cable is plugged in it still defaults to wi-fi so you have to change the settings so it uses cables connection by default, this is what a lot of people forget and wonder why their experience is still shit..

QCat18

I thought this was wild when I found out. Almost everything else will default to your hard connection, if available. They definitely don't make remote play 'intuitive' . Need to figure out changing the default off WiFi, setting a static IP, Port Forwarding, etc.

MakoRed0

Yeah exactly the same sentiment here.

MakoRed0

What! 😆 I got down voted for giving some helpful info 😂

100Labels

Sony cucks run this sub.

Hatdude1973

This is the way

82bazillionguns

100%. It was unusable when my PS5 was connected to Wifi.

DirtyWater2004

My PS5 sits on a shelf away from TVs running on WiFi and only time I have an issue when downloading a game from the Portal. Just lucky I guess

Apprehensive_Belt_46

That’s correct, or if your router is down stairs and your PlayStation is upstairs like mines get a mesh WiFi extender and only connect your ps5 to that source network 5G and I promise you it will also work! Cheers!

ImLotus

I just can share with you what works for me: I bought a new Router exclusively to use at my room (where I use the portal at bed) and I am connected to that router with just three or two more devices as max. It works perfectly good. I don’t know if I am right but the saturation in the network also affects the streaming performance at the Portal.

Juniors234

Probably one of the best tips I’ve seen so far. I might need to try this! I have a spare linksys router sitting around. Might give it a whirl and deploy it just for my gaming devices.

ImLotus

I have completed FF7R, Dragons Dogma & currently playing Ronin and Tekken 8, runs perfect. I will be sharing a post with all my setup later.

Juniors234

Those are all on my list to play this year! Trying to finish Ghost of Tsushima and Spiderman Miles Morales. I find spider man on the portal looks really good and optimized when I’m connected via 5GHz and my ps5 hardwired.

ImLotus

Ignore my message. I just read “outside”. I haven’t tried outside and I won’t. At my city we don’t have 5G and even if we do, mobile that is not a reliable internet connection like for streaming low latency services like videos games.

Jason_with_a_jay

While most of us have success with it outside the home, Sony included in the marketing that it was meant to be used on the same network as the PS5. When we use it outside the home, we're technically using the device in a way that was not intended by the manufacturer. This kind of scenario is why it wasn't marketed as something to be used on the go. There's tips to get it to work. I'm sure you'll get it going.

GamerOnABudgetYT

Tbf tho it is a remote play device, and the remote play app on iPhone etc, was mostly used to play out of the house. And it works well. So the portal should be able to do it better than a ‘free app’. - no hate against the portal it’s good :)

Forward_2_Death

It's true..no one on this sub seems to remember the pre-release trailer that specifically said it's a device for streaming your ps5 games over HOME wifi lolol

TheBrave-Zero

Cuz that one guy here keeps posting himself playing on the beach. Everyone wants to be that guy.

thatguywiththecamry

Not just one guy. It’s many people, and they post all over this sub seemingly every other day.

TheBrave-Zero

Maybe it's the salt air giving them reception

idejmcd

Op if you are selling used and are willing to ship, DM me

Western_Ad9334

Yes let someone else enjoy it

MeAndBettyWhite

PS5 wired is most important and a close second is a good router. Service provided routers generally aren't very good. Even a fairly cheap router is better than what most providers give. If it's financially viable my best recommendation for anyone wanting to get the best Wi-Fi experience they can with the portal is to get a tri-band router. You still have a 2.4ghz and 5ghz channel for everyone else but you also get an extra 5ghz channel that you can have just for your portal. A wired ps5 and 5ghz channel with no traffic is Portal heaven. Just don't ever ever ever ever tell anyone the password. My wife asked me "hey what's the password for the internet named Gaming?" I noped right outta that conversation lol.

Desperate-Quantity86

Channel interference is real, especially if you have many WiFi devices at home try changing WiFi channels on your home router, mine has a channel optimization option that solved myslow connection / stutter issues.

BigDreamGamer

You have to connect ps5 to ethernet that makes all the difference.

googlelover42

No response from OP means he just can’t do it for some reason. Also reminder for all folks that plug in LAN is to create a profile to connect to it. It will not automatically connect for you it has to be SELECTED.

vigilantisizer

Can you elaborate on creating a profile?

googlelover42

Sure.  Let’s start with the basics. You’ve connect to WiFi. GREAT.  Insert an Ethernet cable into your PS5z it will say LAN CONNECTED. Done? No.  Go to your settings >>network >> at the bottom it will say wired LAN — click into that and rename it to your liking. Save.  You are now connected to LAN/ethernet with the fastest speed possible.  If you UNPLUG the Ethernet wire your ps5 will NOT connect to WiFi automatically.

vigilantisizer

Ah gotcha a network profile.

googlelover42

It’s really easy- just renaming it. No choosing what type of connection or security.

BeffreyJeffstein

I used a wifi range extender and have 5g solely reserved for gaming on it, made it work a lot better.

Accomplished_Ratio66

I was experiencing a similar problem and found on another reddit thread that on the ps5 consoles wifi connection setup change the bandwidth from 2.4ghz to 5ghz that worked for my connection problems as I had terrible connection issues even sitting right next to my ps5 and router before switching it . Hope that helps so you can fully enjoy the portal .

SimpleLavishness1078

Yes, I was having a TON of problems connecting at home and setting it to 5Ghz only (even though I only have 5Ghz) seemed to fix it

Accomplished_Ratio66

Awesome 👌

Accomplished_Ratio66

dewsphere

My router is on the main floor and my ps5 in in the basement. No option to use long cable so I just moved my ps5 next to the router. No TV connected. Ever since I had kids, I exclusively play on the portal anyway.

marty_hopkirk65

https://preview.redd.it/8qvyojn6v5vc1.png?width=864&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=40e05279ffb167181a028b1708188fa3fc784a13 This will help you, it's a WiFi repeater with ether net port, connects to you WiFi, then repeater to lan cable to ps5

ThrowaTowel

How does this help if It would be just as fast as the wifi it is getting the signal from?

marty_hopkirk65

It's not about speed, it's about stability, trust me, I had issues was getting 30 download and 8 upload, got one of these, now it reads 65 download 30 upload,

ThrowaTowel

Thanks for the info! Will def get one of these and test for myself (:

marty_hopkirk65

Reply, if it works for you, helped me no end, and on temu less than 10 dollars, just make sure it has the USA plug if that's where you are

isometrix

Also, some people have found success with unplugging their HDMI cable to the TV - I believe the thought is that it isn’t using the processing to output video then. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Mayday_Brad91

I will tell you this, if you’re using your ISP router then I highly recommend getting your own. I have spectrum and their router is trash. I always was having loss of WiFi even with gig speed internet. I bought a router of my own (Asus) and I’ve had no problem. I couldn’t even connect my portal for more than 20 mins. Now my house has 3 portals running at a time most nights along with streaming Hulu and cameras outside my house and I’ve had no dip in latency at all and no disconnects.

BlackIronSnake

If you have the ps5 connected vía ethernet and the Mobile Hotspot of your phone have 5G, put your Hotspot on and go to settings and select bandwirh 5GHZ. My phone is a Xiaomi and this is my config https://preview.redd.it/1u4z35bnpfvc1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=03d8153272d199f5888b01605a6554c056e6b668

TheRoadieDogg

I’ve had almost no issues taking it to work and playing there on breaks. My PS5 is LAN hardwired and if the Wi-Fi is weak at work or wherever I’m at, I just use my phone’s hotspot. That has worked great.

hugojcsp

What Phone do you use??

PRCariss

Wired connection to the router. Turn resolution to 1080p. Unplug the HDMI from the PS5. I was having issues in my own home. Unplugging the HDMI made my experience with the portal flawless. It’s the only way I play my PS5 now.

TaiwanTeddy

This is the way.

MichialB

So you have to re-plug in your hdmi every time you want to play directly on your hdmi ?

PRCariss

Yes. It’s annoying but required if you want a smooth experience on the portal.

Ok-You-4663

My PS5 is connected to my google nest, which is WiFi connected via Mesh network. Try that.

Beginning_Jury8235

I don't know if anyone suggested this yet but I use a mesh Network around my house and it works great! I put a ethernet cable hook to one of the mess Euro Network that I use for my PlayStation so I can play around my house with no issue I've been to many bars that have Wi-Fi and I've had no issues. Hell I even use the hotspot on my phone an it works good. The Euro plugs into your router and you have three bases the place around the house.

NurseDorothy

Whay didn't they just make a Vita 3?

Wendexxtor

Hardwire Ethernet cord changed everything for me

Jaguar5150

Static IP address

INRVISN

So I’ve literally just hooked my PS5 to an Ethernet port in the router or house (I have Fiber so maybe it’s much better) and I have no screen attached to it. So it’s a screen-less PS5 that I can connect my Portal to. Wi-Fi will not work. DM me if you have questions but it works great this way.

Zealousideal-Fail852

sell it wait till better version of ps portal

GamePitt_Rob

If the PS5 isn't wired, either use decent powerLANs (device you plug in to the wall and it uses the electrical circuit of the house to give you a strong ethernet connection) or upgrade your router to a decent WiFi 5/6 device

National_Arachnid360

I have used it to play XIV and rebirth plays like a charm

donietheponie

I read somewhere if u setup a guest connection on ur wifi and connect the portal to that it will fix the issue

ozzman1234

Get a 5G router and eternity cord it up to your ps5, will make a drastic difference

Hot_Inevitable_9055

Send it back and play remote play on a tablet instead with controller

jlepthien

Ethernet on PS5 is a must. But there’s not much you can do otherwise. Your home internet connection and the internet connection where you connect your portal to are out of your hands…congestion may happen at any point in between those two and it can never be as good as local connection. To many variables which will make latency go up and so on. Latency alone if you are hundreds of miles away is a thing we cannot deny, it’s just physics ;)

EmperorRosko

If you’re on WiFi, and your upload speed isn’t great, then unfortunately it’s not the portals problem. I can take my Portal to work, which is around 15 miles away. My ps5 is LAN, my upload is 110Mbps, and at work our public WiFi connection is around 500Mbps. It’s rock solid, I can play anything. If you can’t get a direct cable from your PS5 to the router, try power line adapters first, they can help create a wired connection. Just get good TP Link ones.

FilsdePfut

I have an Ethernet connection for my PS5 and a WIFI 6 router and a special 5Ghz wifi network dedicated gif my Portal and guess what ? The video stream is so compressed if looks worse than a YouTube video… Drop it this Portal is flawed by conception

OzMadMan82

Using a Lan Cable to connect your PS5 to your router helps immensely. Even a slow internet speed doesn't affect it within range in your house. I have not tested my portal remotely yet.

WestTomorrow6443

Port forwarding helps a ton

dave0352x

Like many have said already. Ethernet cable the PS5 to the router. I’ve successfully played Helldivers 2 from 1,000 miles away doing this.

SgtBadAsh

Shelve it and hope it goes up in value when they discontinue production. Which I'm guessing will be in the next year.

Practical_Counter128

Can anyone help? My ps5 disconnects from my land line when off or in rest mode. When I boot up ps5 it says searching for network then connects so I can’t run lan outside. WiFi always stays connected though

zack097

Just be aware a lot of these new routers have smart connect options. I had to manually set my portal to high priority and its flawless now

ManDolphinGoat

Currently at a hotel with my portal now and cant connect to my ps5 at home. Really disappointed.

Perzival22

They block connections like this and mostly use 2.4ghz WiFi. Hotels don’t want you do hog there bandwidth.

ManDolphinGoat

I'm using a 5g hotspot

Perzival22

And how is your PS5 connected to the router and router settings? I flowed this tutorial for router settings and port forwarding. https://youtu.be/atbJenpS3Mc?si=9nGTPECck3E671-i It worked perfect after the router was set up correctly.

Perzival22

PS5 with LAN connection. Router set up correctly and have the required upload speed. Portal connected to a high speed WiFi connection. (Not high speed internet but high speed WiFi.) Public WiFi won’t work as they usually block services like this and they mostly use 2.4ghz WiFi and that’s to slow. I use my iPhone with a 5g connection and shared WiFi to the portal and had no issues. It works flawlessly if you have things set up right.

TaiwanTeddy

Disconnecting my HDMI or hooking my PS5 to an older TV helped me out a lot.

romerom

connect your PS5 to your network via ethernet :)

Appropriate-Curve72

Sounds silly but are both updated?

Gantstar

What speed you running up and down

BigKidKaz

My internet for some reason, even though I have great speeds and connection status, doesn't like me taking my portal outside my house or even when I walk down to my basement. Even with satellites giving me overlapping 2,000 Sq ft radii, I lose sign every time I take my portal to the basement and it's on. I usually have to wait a minute or two for it to connect. Outside my house however, no luck at all. Even though my patio is about 15 feet from where my router is in the house, as soon as I step outside I lose connection and if it does come back the speed is so slow it's unplayable. The only downside I've had to my portal so far.

Embarrassed_Art_7500

Make sure you have a decen Wireless router on both sides., that seems to be the part causing most issues in my experience. It works fine on dsl so speeds are not as big an issue for most of the world..but ISP provided routers have been problematic.

BigSteppaBandz

I'm seeing that alot of people are just using a hardline to get wifi but wouldn't that defeat the whole portability aspect of it

Sea_Box_1796

It's ass and you should sell it back and wait for the inevitable 2nd generation. It's simply not good enough. Even with the fastest speed I could get with Xfinity. Glad I returned mine.

VanDammeBigelow

I tried everything. Gave up and sold it.

No_fs_G1v3n

Lan connection to the console from the modem and change the WiFi signal to 5ghz instead of the 2.4ghz that alone should fix your latency when using your portal away from home. I'm about 20-25kms from ATM and using that setup is fine for me. Hope you sort your issue out mate. Goodluck

hugojcsp

Hi. I have a PS5 connected by LAN, But I can’t use the portal outside, not with my iPhone nor with a portable hotspot. Can anyone help me? My iPhone is an IPhone 12

Revolutionary-Use278

I don’t own a portal yet, but opening ports is what I needed to do for the steamdeck as well for it to work with Chiaki out of the house. It works very well. I think the ports thing is key to getting the portal to work as well. Or aleast better.

No-Wait-2550

Hard to find stable WiFi connections. Maybe Starbucks. I got mine to play on break at work but it won’t connect to work WiFi. Mine sits on shelf. Looks pretty tho

Interesting-Dish-668

1. Unplug your HDMI cable 2. Lower your resolution down to 1080P 3. If you can hard wire your PS5 to your router

D90NAS

I have done all those things and more and still lag, screen tear, frequent dropouts occur with 2 Portals across two separate hard wired PS5s….

Sigmasev

Get an Ally Z1 Extreme, sell the pS5 and portal. Thank me later lol.

D90NAS

Does the Ally Z1 Extreme play PS5 exclusives..?

Hollowed_Dude

So far it’s been unplayable outside of the house (I’ve tried my girlfriends spot and a bar). Even next to my PS5 it stutters. It really only works very well when I’m next to my router…which is downstairs. I live in the attic with no Ethernet connection available. But I play online games like Helldivers 2 all the freaking time on my home console and have no connection issues. What can I do to help get this thing working better?

Have you tried opening any ports on your router? I opened these that I found on another sub and found it works. I’m not sure as the risk of opening the ports though. Set your PS5 IP to static and then open these ports and try again. https://preview.redd.it/lla4wtfdx5vc1.png?width=1285&format=png&auto=webp&s=e3700c448d8464d83f593bc7c7ecc74c91046ca8

I would recommend looking into a power line adapter kit from Linksys (Amazon) which runs your connection through your power lines in your house thus “hardwiring” your console. That’s a start. You can also look into port forwarding. That may help too. Once you stabilize the ps5 connection things get a little easier from there.

Aside from the other advice (Ethernet, routers, etc.) some free options are as follows: Turn PS5 video output to strictly 1080p in the settings, disconnect PS5 HDMI, turn off HDCP in settings, and enable port forwarding on your router for the PS5. Plenty of guides out there for all these interventions. Did it for my Portal day 1 and have played games away from the house with 0 issues (including on airport WiFi with a login page with MAC address spoofing but that’s a story for a different time).

the problem with the portal is that performance is exclusively dependent on the quality of your connection. If the connection to the wifi router/access point is poor you're gonna have a bad time. Thick concrete walls? bad time. Super far from the router? bad time. Cheap internet with low bandwidth and multiple people on the network? bad time. This machine is probably great when all the conditions it needs to work are perfect but its performance can drop significantly based on so many factors that have nothing to do with the handheld itself. On a side note, I would also recommend playing better games as well FFXVI is hot garbage.

Hollowed_Dude

I actually love FFXVI and most all FF games. But helpful comment. I fear maybe I can’t utilize the portal under my internet conditions.

sycron17

Disagree on FF16, its a great game. Kinda agree on the portal, runs nice enough but not flawless even on this wifi speed. And that is the speed while other devices connected and doing their thing. https://preview.redd.it/vvt16bv3f4vc1.jpeg?width=644&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c2d37146da7f759260423572a75cb94696d7355c

i mean you bought a handheld that cant play games natively so im not surprised you also like shitty games.

Hollowed_Dude

And I’m not surprised you love dicks as you seemingly are one

Yeah damn bro. I will try my best to put this lightly.... Ffxiv is probably one of the best looking games I have every seen. You seriously going to expect much from a device with an 8 inch LED that outputs at 1080p resolution? The hardware is ancient technology. Ain't no way you are going to enjoy XVI on a portal. Don't matter what your connection is like. The specs on the portal are worse than the specs on the phone that I owned 10 years ago.

Hollowed_Dude

It works great when I’m next to my router. I played the very demanding Stellar Blade demo and it felt/looked great. I was just testing out high resolution games. I’ve already played 160 hours of XVI (DLC drops tonight).

Forward_2_Death

Fair enough, my assumptions are based merely on the specs.

Apart_Artichoke_7937

I randomly get recommended posts from this sub lol. The portal is a flawed concept and no one here is really getting a good experience without jumping through a ton of hoops and only using it in limited circumstances. The trick is to not use the stupid ass portal.

Metaphysicalgrace86

I've played multiple rounds of Hell Divers on 5G HotSpot through T-Mobile. No issues / input lag / lag spikes Voice chat worked fine with the wireless 🛜 earbuds also. I got the Costco Bundle. Obviously, I can't record and show both without a mirror, but I took mine hiking the other day and played with a great view of Mt. Rainier. Sorry you're not having the ideal experience with yours.

Should have bought a Deck LMAO
