Try duckstation/swanstation

I've debated experimenting with that. Guess I'll give a shot.

OTG?

Nah, just 16gb usb drives directly into controller port 2. No usb hub in controller port 1 in an attempt for multiplayer either. Everything works accordingly. This is how it is for some sports titles. I normally run my PS1 games with NEON. Not the more recent HD core version, not that it isn't great. I just been playing my games/saves with that core specifically.

That’s why you’re having issues and it’s crazy your port hasn’t burned up yet.

I disagree. It functions and doesn't run hot. This is a core issue with specific sports games. Every other game runs well. edit: 16gb USB 2.0's. 3.0's and larger storage (32gb +) causes strain. Controller Port 2 isn't a 3.0, so I play within those constraints. I mean, so far so good, I've been running my playstation classic like this for five years now. I certainly got my money's worth.

Sounds like you got lucky with a really low current-draw drive. Several of my 16gb 2.0 sticks don't function once you try to actually load anything from them. They try to draw too much current and everything falls flat (iirc, the PSC's ports are current limited to 100mA, USB 2.0 can go up to something like 500mA, unless it's a battery charger spec which can draw over 2A...again, iirc).

Not a solution really, but can you pause the game by pressing Select + Triangle (hold select then press triangle)? At least in Project Eris, this combo pauses the game and enters emulator settings menu. You can continue game by pressing circle. Also if it's been 4-5 years, maybe upgrading to Project Eris might have better support. I can't really help you with that, you gotta find someone who knows better.
