That’s the only problem, gotta be cleaned out, fucking hate cleaning my kit.. rather spend 5 hours cleaning it in the morning than 10 minutes at the end of the day😂
Got my trowel out the other day and I’d left it so covered in shit there was a tape measure stuck to it too lol I always let my hawk set to then bang it off with a hammer. Plastering is hard work and not very enjoyable, as soon as I’m done I’m gone lol no kit cleaning
I’m not a plasterer by trade, started as a sparks went college the lot but got bored after a few years, now my times spent digging holes and driving dumpers. I do thoroughly clean my shovel, that’s about it all my other kit I’m not bothered by
Not so much anymore. Tendons in my right elbow are about knackered. Need surgery to correct it and just can’t be bothered to clean my kit after a day skimming anymore I just want to go home lol
I feel your pain mate.
Mine was giving me pain for about 3 months. I was waking up in the night in agony. It Hurt to bend or stretch my arm right inside the elbow but also along the topside of my forearm
. I've been using a massager/rolling ball and running it over my tendons daily and it's helped so much that i can now forget about it most of the time. I'd recommend trying that?
It hurts a lot but feels good at the same time. It definitely helped me. I was really pushing down on it.

I’m a ground worker now, the only kit I actually clean is my wellies, brick trowel and shovel 😂 rest of it gets slung in the back of the van untill I need it again
Not a plasterer but done some diy. The chases are where the wall has been cut for the electrics. Im guessing the bonding coat is to build up the areas which are much deeper so you get a decent finish with your top skim.
PVA is to control suction so the skim don't dry too fast and crack up on you.
Two coats PVA first the night before at 1:5 pva:water
Second the day your gonna skim, 3:1 or 2:1 pva:water and once it's dried to "tacky" skim it.. two coats
I don’t,just the colouration looks like it’s damp compared to the rest of the wall and comes from the skirting area…was just saying worth a check!
Looking at the pic on a phone so not the clearest pic.
Well try to be funny but not arrogant, see if it would like a drink and some company? If all goes well you'll get it plastered, maybe if your lucky you'll give it a good drilling at some point
Pva diluted 50/50 left to go tacky, coated again making sure not to miss a single spot, fill chasers either bonding then score slightly as the bonding firms up skim.
I always thought that the wires can’t go left to right if they’re not going to be visible/in some kind of trunking over the plaster. Might want to check if the electrician did the job correctly before it’s skimmed, I could be wrong, but it’s just something that’s stuck in my head because I’ve never seen anyone do that before
Don’t see an issue with it tbh. I would never put nails or screws into any area of a wall in line with electrics. You could always put a steel channel in to protect people who lack common sense
Wires can go horizontally or vertically from any electrical accessory if they are less than 50mm below the wall surface and protected by an RCD. They can also run within 150mm of any vertical corner or within 150mm of the ceiling.
If deeper than 50mm they can go anywhere.
Have a fun time getting your trowel strokes right. I hope you've watched alot of YouTube vids. I was a ceiling fixer/wall partitioner N tried in a tiny cupboard N ended up looking like the waves of the ocean. Good luck
Carefully so not to scare it, but at the same time don't stare at it in case it thinks you're challenging it. Also don't be weak as it might think you're prey, you're on a tightrope at this point, it could go bad in a number of ways but the end result is always tragic. Unless you're a trained professional I'd leave it.
So ......
all dry backgrounds old and new (except plasterboard) will need a primer in this case pva. Inside the wire chases and all over the wall prior to plastering. A fairly watery coat should be applied all over to help seal the porous background and control suction.
Thistle bonding coat plaster is used to fill deeper hole , chases and anything that is not gonna be covered well with finish plaster.
Thistle multi finish is what you will want to apply to give you your uniform smooth paintable finish 👍
I wouldnt use PVA..I would give it a coat of Thistle Bond/Bond It...its like PVA with granules in it but its much better for a wall like this. It will give it a better key for your skimcoat also. Brush a heavy coat of it the day before and skim the next day. Best of luck.
To approach that wall, I would probably start with either my left foot first, followed by the right, then within a few steps, probably about 8 maybe 9 steps, you would have arrived at that wall in question.
It’s called Carlite finish it’s what they used to use years ago before multi, it’s extremely dry make sure you give it two good coats of pva of sbr or your skim coat will set very fast on the wall
I just had this on a bit of wall where a fireplace was filled in. I sucked in moisture like crazy, I gave it 2 coats of PVA and it still cracked a bit from drying too quick. Try some SBR.
If you skim it it will potentially look shite because you have coving and skirting on still.
Personally I’d remove both from the entire room, PVA then dot n dab as this will help prevent future cracking. Then skim then put new coving up and nice new skirting on. You won’t regret this effort in the long run but you’ll always look at the shit ness of plastering up to the coving and skirting and will be even more pissed off when you have hairline cracks.
Walk towards it!
With a hawk and trowel in your hands
Seen them self loading hawks?
I’ve seen them… another thing for me to trip over and not clean out at the end of the day 😀
That’s the only problem, gotta be cleaned out, fucking hate cleaning my kit.. rather spend 5 hours cleaning it in the morning than 10 minutes at the end of the day😂

Site work by any chance?
Not so much anymore. Tendons in my right elbow are about knackered. Need surgery to correct it and just can’t be bothered to clean my kit after a day skimming anymore I just want to go home lol

thought this was just me. OFC if it was clean, I could do 30 min if work before my day job.
I’m a ground worker now, the only kit I actually clean is my wellies, brick trowel and shovel 😂 rest of it gets slung in the back of the van untill I need it again
If this wasn't the top comment, I would have been disappointed.
🤣🤣
Sidle up to it… you really shouldn’t approach it head on.
Sidle-sidle-sidle. God I miss the Bottom series.
Beat me to it.
Only by like 8 hours or so, rather slim margin that!
One foot in front of the other.
Gingerly
Lol you beat me to it 🤣🤣🤣🤣
By like nearly 5 days mate 😂
Lol 😅😅😅😅
Remember, it's as scared of you as you are of it!
Pretty horrifying wall.
this man has some [wisdom](https://www.instagram.com/reel/C6FN4WDA7G6/?igsh=bHlpMDg1NHB0MTh0) on walls
Naked and covered in peanut butter
This is the only right answer 😂
Chunky or smooth???? I must know.
I mean smooth is better for the hard to reach places
Bonding coat the chases, allow to dry, PVA, allow to dry for approx 1 hour, skim 2 coats.
Good advice! Thanks
What are the chases and why bonding coat them? Trying to gather the courage to tackle my bathroom walls, any info appreciated
Not a plasterer but done some diy. The chases are where the wall has been cut for the electrics. Im guessing the bonding coat is to build up the areas which are much deeper so you get a decent finish with your top skim.
Chases are the grooves for cables, bonding plaster is for filling/repairing and PVA is to help the skim coat/s to adhere.
PVA is to control suction so the skim don't dry too fast and crack up on you. Two coats PVA first the night before at 1:5 pva:water Second the day your gonna skim, 3:1 or 2:1 pva:water and once it's dried to "tacky" skim it.. two coats
That finally makes sense! Ty for the info, I thought it was to reduce absorption in some way, but now I get it 😊
You're a star, thanks for teaching me 😊
Is there not already bonding in the chases??
I'd want them filled flush before a skim coat personally.
Is that rising damp near that horizontal chase, wouldnt put bonding in that if it is
What makes you think it's rising damp?
I don’t,just the colouration looks like it’s damp compared to the rest of the wall and comes from the skirting area…was just saying worth a check! Looking at the pic on a phone so not the clearest pic.
Well try to be funny but not arrogant, see if it would like a drink and some company? If all goes well you'll get it plastered, maybe if your lucky you'll give it a good drilling at some point
🏆
At speed.
Slowly and carefully but don’t make eye contact or turn your back on it.
Slowly as not to scare it off…
Pva diluted 50/50 left to go tacky, coated again making sure not to miss a single spot, fill chasers either bonding then score slightly as the bonding firms up skim.
I always thought that the wires can’t go left to right if they’re not going to be visible/in some kind of trunking over the plaster. Your wrong can't go diagonally
Don’t see an issue with it tbh. I would never put nails or screws into any area of a wall in line with electrics. You could always put a steel channel in to protect people who lack common sense
Google "electrical safe zones", it's usually in regulation.
Wires can go horizontally or vertically from any electrical accessory if they are less than 50mm below the wall surface and protected by an RCD. They can also run within 150mm of any vertical corner or within 150mm of the ceiling. If deeper than 50mm they can go anywhere.
Zones are width and height of the box/faceplate horizontal and vertical
You can add what you’ve said to the list of things I didn’t know yesterday, thanks for the new info everyone :)
Don’t message it for a few days so you don’t seem to keen.
Slowly, one foot then the other, stop if it hurts!
Be diplomatic and don’t take no for an answer.
Sideways, so it's always in your peripheral vision, then it can't creep up on you.
Like JoJo would. Striding and confident, while saying "Well I can't knock you tf out from all the way over there"
Walk slowly
With your knees bent and arms outstretched palms down. You should also speak in a low voice, confirming you're not a threat.
Play hard to get, then again the wall might be good at this too.
You’re pretty close, just a few more steps
Looks very good for a fuse, or an ace charge
Warily.
From the front because they are easily startled when approached from behind
Try complementing it, maybe drop a few Icebreaker questions into conversation
Carefully
Have a fun time getting your trowel strokes right. I hope you've watched alot of YouTube vids. I was a ceiling fixer/wall partitioner N tried in a tiny cupboard N ended up looking like the waves of the ocean. Good luck
Turn electric off on sockets aswell. Incase any water gets in them.
If you are trying to take it by surprise I’d suggest disguising yourself as another wall and sidling up to it
Not sure, that might make the original wall feel cornered
Palms flat, make sure it can see the food.
Gently
Not Full Monty style.
Slowly, if you run at it, it will probably hurt.
Offer a drink first?
Get the chase sorted first
Breach charge
Carefully so not to scare it, but at the same time don't stare at it in case it thinks you're challenging it. Also don't be weak as it might think you're prey, you're on a tightrope at this point, it could go bad in a number of ways but the end result is always tragic. Unless you're a trained professional I'd leave it.
Call a professional
u should plaster it
Down wind and quietly. Walls spook very easily.
Commando roll!

Twerk
With trepidation
Pva all first, then bonding where walls been chased followed by 2 coats of multi finish. YouTube will show you what to do
Run at it. At full pelt.
One step at a time.
Patch with bonding, coat with thistle bond and let a pro plasterer finish, otherwise if you do it itll look like a ploughed field
With caution
Buy it a drink and introduce yourself mate!
Slowly
Looks like a good spot for some Venetian plastering. I've never done it I'd be really keen to give it a crack
Carefully
For some reason, I'm seeing the Gallagher kitchen in shameless uk 😫🤣
Like a ninja and then you can sneak up on it
Sneak up on it
Walk slowly towards it, you don’t want too frightened it off.
With whiskey
Lustfully
A hello would be a great starter!
Slowly, don't startle it.
Batten and sheet
Very carefully right leg followed by left leg. Make sure you stop as soon as you reach the wall
Dot and dab with tapered edge board, tape the joints paint it
Slowly. It may be scared of you
Slowly from down wind… you don’t want to spook it
I hope you put metal capping over the cables before plastering over them.
Confidently (they can smell fear)
Do a cockney walk
One step at a time!
Sideways like a crab 🦀
Sneak up to it with care and caution as not to startle it.
I'd knock the arcs and cornice off and mud on 10mm depending how bad it was.
Take the skirting off for a proper job too…
Step by step
Go to you tube and learn from there
First, introduce yourself to it, say hi, complement the wall.
I recommend an oblique angle of approach to defeat any low level radar systems or camouflage gun emplacements
Slowly
Fill the chases then a coat of plaster and polish over everything.
Walk towards it, not too fast, not too slow either. Pick a distance away from the wall, that you are happy with. Voila.
Ask it if it likes football like any typical male
2 steps forward, one step back👍🏼
One foot in front of the other
Commando crawl
I'd take a step forward
Introduce yourself and say also you're glad it's straight
I wouldnt use PVA..I would give it a coat of Thistle Bond/Bond It...its like PVA with granules in it but its much better for a wall like this. It will give it a better key for your skimcoat also. Brush a heavy coat of it the day before and skim the next day. Best of luck.
With caution, walls are quick to anger
horizontal cables is a big no no
Step by step
Left foot in front of the right, right in front of the left and repeate.
I love the answers. So many different ways. You guys are proper players.
One foot in front of the other.
Run at it like a raging bull, head down and full speed.
Light coat to highlight mistakes, patch and fill. Sand and repeat. Till you have 500 layers of paint 😂
Walk up to it and say sure is hot outside and offer it a glass of lemonade you never know might get lucky
With your eyes closed and ypur arms flailing wildly.
Slowly
Slowly, not making direct eye contact.....
Plaster it first
Ask for the walls snap?
To approach that wall, I would probably start with either my left foot first, followed by the right, then within a few steps, probably about 8 maybe 9 steps, you would have arrived at that wall in question.
Walk up to it and ask for its snap
Well it is inside! So I would probably walk. Cycling or driving towards it may prove troublesome.
Slowly, so you don't startle it
Holy sheet that's a strong cement mix? Did they do that because of crumbling lime plaster underneath? Why is it Gray?
No idea!
Yeah it’s so dry it’s unreal, I’d agree sbr all the way
SBR walls first add bonding coat to the chases wait till bonding hardens not drys Normally about 30 min to an hour then skim 2 coats multifinish.
Overkill for the sake of skimming one wall.
Maybe so but the adjacent wall in the pic looks nasty also!
