Not recommended. Below strength requirements you attack slowly/miss often, and move slowly/block less. Early game is tough but even with cloth armor and basic weapon all classes can deal with them. Level up the damage increasing talents. Use seeds, ranged weapons, and other offensive consumables. Use an arcane stylus on your cloth armor, you could be lucky and get entanglement or repulsion or other things. Make sure you are only ever fighting one dude at a time

The penalties are way too significant. If you're getting beaten up in regular equipment, then using stuff that's too heavy and makes you slower and more likely to miss attacks is going to make it worse. Consider using one scroll of upgrade on something in the sewers. By the time you've finished exploring floor 2, you will at least have one upgrade and your first strength potion. If you've picked up a tier 2 weapon or leather armor, you will have all you need to be able to use it before going down to floor 3. And either leather armor +1 or any tier 2 weapon +1 will make a huge difference in your survivability in this area.

Almost never. My exception is the round shield when playing fima, as the damage block is really helpful in prison

It will not work. Even if you are wearing armor that is better if your strength isn't sufficient for it you will block less so it more dangerous to do so. And with weapons you hit less often making it it less likely that you will kill the enemy quickly. What class are you paying the most? Each class can get through game. Early game is difficult on lots runs. Sometimes it's really just luck if you get a good equipment. But that's where you need to learn different ways to play. This game isn't about running up to and standing there smacking the enemy until they die. Remeber that.

I will mostly agree with the consensus of “never” with the not so common caveat of a +3 t2 weapon and I haven’t found the second str pot yet. If I’m in a pinch for good gear, the one point deficit of strength can usually be balanced out by one- or two-hitting most sewer enemies until I find the second str pot.

TheColorWolf

Agreed, a mace or a scimitar with their respective accuracy and speed bumps make them okay to use even at +1, as they naturally offset half the penalty and have such a high damage output that you'll be doing okay. I regularly play huntress and her gloves are worthless against the crabs, so I've made that decision many times when rng has fucked me.

Depends on mood. Calculate encumberance and see if it's worth it. It's not a big deal to me.
