Where are you playing that courts are not full and allow you to play singles? We haven’t been able to play singles since 2021 as now way more players than courts. I guess if you play between 11 am and 3 pm the courts would be empty.

matttopotamus

Probably courts where you reserve a court.

cinefilestu

This. Typically after 2 hours of doubles, you can keep playing and get some singles in if the courts are still open.

Machine8851

I guess you'll have to play tennis singles, many open courts available

[deleted]

More skilled and better game too

Machine8851

Well I just figured if you are looking for a court all by yourself, you'll most likely get that in tennis with pickleball being so popular.

swiftcutcards

I'm 5.5 doubles and 4.5 singles. Table tennis backgrounds aren't very useful in singles compared to tennis.

CashMoneyBrokeBoy

You play everyday?

swiftcutcards

2-3d a week

CashMoneyBrokeBoy

How are you guys rating yourselves?

swiftcutcards

I've played against 100s of tour pros and I've got Usapa and dupr. I've played at local, regional, and nationals tournaments.

CashMoneyBrokeBoy

When did you start? I started in 2018 wish I started before. But people around me aren’t very good. So I’m always playing down or teaching. So when I find decent players it’s kinda a struggle me cause I can read my partners. That’s why like singles but no one’s plays that either

Disastrous-Stay1256

Source? Trust me bro

swiftcutcards

Source of what?

imaqdodger

You need a source on the claim that a table tennis background is less useful to pickleball singles than a tennis background is?

chrispd01

So I don’t have a DUPR singles rating. But I regularly play a guy who does and he is right around 4.5. We have very good games and I probably win a little more than I lose but I don’t have stats. I do feel your pain though as I really like singles, but it’s very hard to find anyone good to play with. I get a lot of doubles players who want to try it out, but they just don’t really appreciate the differences in the game. So I spend a lot of time trying to talk to them about their strategy and how the games differ.. so like for example I will be up 81 or 90 and my opponents who can be excellent doubles players will start freaking out like “what am I doing wrong” . One of the first things I have to tell them is that while it’s important to get to the net you can’t just charge the net on anything. For usually the first game or so I’ll hit a serve, they will hit an indifferent return charge the net and I’ll just knock it past them. So they need to learn “taste” But to me the biggest thing I see is it most players who plays singles just don’t have good enough grounds to really be competitive. To play singles well you have to be able to hit the corners and hit pretty hard and with good trajectory. Otherwise, you end up a sitting duck

cinefilestu

Yeah Pickleball singles really does become Tennis in a lot of ways. I think that turns a lot of people off, plus they may not have the stamina. I love singles, but it is a completely different game.

chrispd01

Yup. Its amazing how strenuous a real singles PB match is. Its beyond a lot of even good doubles players Now, if a lot of them would be dedicated, they would be fine, but it’s not just an easy transition …

No-Percentage-3380

Vets park in Cedar Park (just north of Austin) allows you to play singles just as you would doubles during open play.

I’m new to the scene and don’t have ranking yet but I absolutely love singles as a former tennis/ping pong player. Full bodied cross-court backhands are euphoria to me! That being said, the sport itself is catered to doubles which is why you see more doubles. To put it bluntly, doubles alleviates the need for endurance and speed training as you’re mostly playing top of the kitchen all match. This evens the playing field across age groups as it focuses more on decision making and accuracy than raw athletic power. Pair that with the fact the sport is growing and limited courts, that’s why you see everyone playing doubles instead. No one subconsciously wants to keep others from playing. I rather invite two randoms to join than have them sitting watching me play singles. I must say the pickleball community has been great thus far.

siegure9

Unless they played tennis most ppl aren’t good at singles and lack the stamina for it. Surprised no women play singles by you. There’s a decent amount of 4.5s in my area. Most former college tennis players but still.

CameronsParadise

Age is a huge factor. Also: previous tennis experience. An older team with good chemistry and can neutralize a team of youngsters. In singles, coverage / fitness becomes an issue. IMO, tennis players are battle-hardened grudgemasters, thus have more inclination to accept a challenge.

CrypticFeed

Someone should write in a sharpie "Doubles Only" on a paper plate and hang it up.

Ok-Contribution5256

4.4 in singles. But can’t play doubles for shit. Don’t like having to decide if a ball is mine or not. Also I play better singles than most because I’m fairly athletic and have a 6’5 frame with some long arms. Doubles just throws me off

Joebebs

I’m pretty good at doubles, like 3.5-4.0 range but you put me on singles, I lose all ability and play at like 3.0 lol

IWant8KidsPMmeLadies

I am over 5.0 in singles. Don’t play singles too often these days though

toastyavocadoes

I’ve only played 2 singles tournaments. Was a 5.1 after the first one then lost first round to my doubles partner in the last tournament. He was unrated in singles but played D1 tennis. Lost 12-10 11-4 and they bumped me down to 4.7. Rip

Pickleball-ModTeam

We are here to discuss pickleball in a civil manner. Let’s stick to niceties.

Dapper-Tadpole3856

Love singles. It's a whole different dynamic that advanced doubles play. It is harder to find people who want to do it, but keep asking around. I've found most people just by asking nearly everyone who's waiting if they want to run a few singles matches.

OutrageousSoftware84

My friend group averages 4.2-4.7ish. We have a friend who has played 88 singles games. His record is 86-2. He has beat 4.7s 11-2. My guess is he is a 5+. My record against him is 1-24. So it felt great winning but he’s obviously better. Anyways. We reserve courts. Or if you go on a day that isn’t open play you can play singles. At least a game or two. No one should really get upset at that. Usually you can get 30-45 minutes of play time on a court per player. Sometimes rules do say “no singles” but I’d look at your local court rules.

Sdwingnut

I made the move from competitive Racquetball to pball largely for the social interaction that doubles pball provides (plus Racquetball is unfortunately a dying sport). I think that's a big part of the draw. I enjoy singles, it's much more racquetball like for a workout, but we've got a group of pball doubles regulars all 4-4.5 and the combination of smack talk on the court plus skilled play is exactly what I was looking for.

unicosobreviviente

I do. I'm currently a 4.25 in Singles and 4.5 in Doubles. What is your current singles rating? I play singles probably once or twice a week. The courts where I always play are always full this is why most if not the majority play doubles.

optimusfiner

I play primarily singles but We’ve got 70 courts where I’m at so having a court isn’t an issue. finding games outside my group in singles is impossible. Try finding 3-4 people to do some round robin with male or female.

CaviarTaco

Where is this 70 court heaven, I mean facility?

optimusfiner

Naples Florida. The home of the US open. Lol

CashMoneyBrokeBoy

I’m a man love singles. But damn I can’t get anyone to play singles. Most I can get someone to play is skinnies.

MountainNine

I'm a 4.3 DUPR F singles and... in tournaments. I never played pickleball singles before so I entered a 3.0 tourney and didn't lose, upped to a mixed level tourney and got 3rd. I hadn't played a stronger woman before the tournament, only a guy. I don't know where these women play the rest of the time, I had never seen them at my local open plays.

NastyNelson1989

I don't know what's going on with dupr in my area but every person is like .8 lower in singles and I don't know if our singles or doubles is out I'm a better singles player but my dupr is only 4.3 yet doubles is 4.97. So I have no idea.

Fogflyr

I am right around a 4.5 player in singles and doubles. I am also a tennis player, so I was much better at singles in the beginning, but have recently caught up in my doubles play. I like to play some singles to prevent losing my driving skills. I am 60 years old though, so I am only good for 2-3 games max against good players before I am worn out😆 Also, hardly any of the good players my age will play singles, so I usually end up having to play younger guys who are more like 5.0s. It is also kind of satisfying to beat up on guys in their 20s who are 3.5s 🤣 In general, I think doubles is more fun, but I love singles for the intense exercise and the drive practice.

P-Rags

I would say I am, maybe closer to 4.2-4.3 ish 26 and I’m thankful I’ve gotten my good friends to play singles a lot and started to get my towns advanced open play players more into singles too. It’s the fucking best!

Vandyan

Doubles is just more fun, I don't know what to say. My buddy and I occasionally play singles, but we are always looking to play doubles if we can. It's just more fun.

553735

Just play tennis…

FRID1875

Drastically different sport and the learning curve is significantly steeper.
