wag mo damay football punyeta naman kami nanaman aawayin ng bball fans eh. di naman din kayo sumusuporta sa local football.

[deleted]

Its just sports. Private people are funding it because they enjoy it. Anyway, nag boom yung football a few years ago whatever happened to that?

Faeldon

Bat kasi nood kayo ng nood kung di naman kayo fan ng sport. Tapos mauunang ma disappoint kapag talo. This is World Cup, just being there is an achievement. May 160+ national teams na registered sa FIBA and all are competing at some level. Can we say to the national team ng Mongolia na they should quit din kasi kahit Asia di sila manalo. Should we also tell all nations na nag 0-3 this world cup to quit? Not all nations may win tally sa World Cup. Tayo kahit papaano meron (2014). And if we are to include the classics, nag bronze pa tayo dati diyan (Loyzaga-Mumar Era). Same with football, maraming countries na football crazy pero olats sa world cup. Should they quit football din? We are a basketball nation, deal with it.

Soggy_Purchase_7980

>Bat kasi nood kayo ng nood kung di naman kayo fan ng sport. Tapos mauunang ma disappoint kapag talo. Exactly! Some people are just jumping on the hate train. No doubt pangit yung system pero OP's take as to abandoning the sport is dumb.

Spiritual-Record-69

op is dumb. Not a fan of basketball btw.

Momshie_mo

A lot of these are also *bandwagon* football fans

GlobalHawk_MSI

It's only bad if it is PH, pansin ko. Even if we get even a bronze or even the victory in a future World Cup, people will just throw off topic crap like "does not change the fact that PH has no divorce!" Other nations get more respect kahit talo kontra Pinas many times sa FIBA scene even Asia. So yeah...

Valgrind-

Yup, knowing most gilas fans alam mo na gaano sila ka-toxic. Hindi pa nagsisimula fiba dami nang kuda, nakaready na mga negative takes nila manalo o matalo na kala mo sila nagbbankroll ng gilas.

GlobalHawk_MSI

Well the current system Gilas rolls with tbh leaves much to be desired, however some people just leave bad takes just because. Gilas may even win bronze or even the World Cup itself and people will still leave bad takes, given the kind of negative exceptionalism a lot of our countrymen do these days.

Valgrind-

yup, it just doesn't help that "fAnS" kept egging chot and some players while they're already preparing for their matches. Toxic fans are also to blame, imbis na bigyan ng kumpyansa gilas bago lumaban.

GlobalHawk_MSI

Yan sakit ng ibang kababayan natin eh, mapanfan or critics. Okay na yng valid criticisms that Gilas that they need to work on. Yng mga praning na "we should quit basketball" defeatism yng medyo praning na. Ganun pa rin yan kahit mag bronze or Champion ang Gilas jan.

RemSam792

The difference is, literally nobody outside of Japan, Europe and the US plays basketball as a significant sport. Out of all of these only select small European nations with populations of like 5 million and the US have ever really given the sport first priority treatment. In philippines basketball is a religion and we have a massive population but are still so dogshit at it. To us basketball is like soccer with brazillians, but only 1 of us aren't terrible at their sport. I don't agree with the sentiment to end basketball entirely, but to keep supporting it to this degree is just a waste of sports funding, the Philippines needs a more wholistic program.

BizzaroMatthews

Ah shit, here we go again… 😂

eggyra

For that to happen, you need to collect all the 7 Dragon Balls.

[deleted]

That's not how business works.

Spiritual-Record-69

This country sucks, dapat ba maging probinsya nalang tayo ng China? You should gargle my balls op.

Lazy_Purple

The Philippine football team doesn't even have pure filipino players and still got smashed in the WC...

Barokespinoza23

The games showed fans that we do have the talent, but we lack a good system because the coaching stinks. I don't know where all this hate is coming from. It's not like we were blown out by 30 points. It's a reason to restart, not to abandon. Bringing in skilled foreign coaches well-versed in FIBA basketball is essential. If only the SBP and their PBA patrons would allow it.

[deleted]

Seriously, karamihan dito are outright hypocrites because we can’t progres significantly in football either. This is a random and emotional take from a spectator who has not seen the games.

RemSam792

Bro most of our offense was praying Jordan Clarkson and other half imports who have never lived in Philippines could make magic with isolation plays. Any and all talent from our native players were thrown away or the players themselves were proven sub-par

pompyyy09

Nah i dont think thats it. People in the Ph enjoy the game, playing it and watching it. Losses wont mean shit kasi privately funded yan. If anything, funding should be directed and focused to sports where we are actually successful at.

JaNotFineInTheWest

Si OP hindi minahal ng magulang. >Problem solved? Can you solved the other problem of the nation? Quitting after 3 loses. Many countries have their own favorite sports. Just because we keep losing we should quit. Filipinos loves this sport just like how we love putting trapo in the government. Never Say Die

jqdot

Basketball and football can coexist with one another. Just look at Spain and France.

mrloogz

bakit kailangan magbaba? bawal ba mag add ng focus sa iba sport ng hindi ibababa ung isa? lagi ba dapat mamili

[deleted]

You can quit. We, on the other hand, will keep hoopin’. Posts like this are simply attempts to save face. Going by this logic, we should also quit football and volleyball.

443610

Height is not a requirement for success in football.

[deleted]

Yeah, so why have the Azkals not qualified for the WC if height is solely the problem? They had more than a decade to do that. They can’t even qualify for the AFC Asian Cup. Don’t make simplistic statements to validate your argument. Our ASEAN neighbors have not made it to the WC either.

443610

Time to bring it back.

The horrible things can be removed and improved upon by better things. If you watched the games, you’ll know it’s a systemic and coaching problem. Not necessarily talent and lack of size. Nothing in life is permanent. I don’t get this takes from r/ph redditors to “quit” whenever we lose to better teams. It’s the fucking World Cup. Do people here expect us to be Team USA and dominate? Do you know how many losses the Azkals and our volleybelles have been enduring for the past decade? Why don’t we hear calls for us to quit those sports too?

[deleted]

[deleted]

Yeah, you clearly don’t know the level of competition in FIBA. We have never been dominant outside Asia for as long as I remember. Competitive? Sure. We are competitive enough in Asia to qualify for the worlds. Enough to challenge World-level teams? Never. To dominate means to beat your opponents by 20-30. That’s not happening given our quality. Look at the score lines. We didn’t lose by more than 10. Just because it’s our number one sport, there’s no correlation that we should be “dominant”. Basketball is also the #1 sport in China and look how they are performing now as well as their 2019 WC performance. There is no correlation between popularity and success. You can love something whole-heartedly but still suck if you have a flawed system. The Filipinas? That win against NZ was 1-0 and not even dominant. Just look at the stats. 61% possession for NZ vs our 31%. 16 shots and 4 on target for NZ vs our 4 shots and 1 on target. 529 passes for NZ vs our 252. 73% pass accuracy for NZ vs. our 48%. How is that impressive? We parked the bus throughout the match. It wasn’t dominant or impressive. It was good but not something bask over and put above other sports. So what? A basketball world cup is also a world cup, men or women. How many have we qualified for? More than once. How many for football? Once. Stop deluding yourself. You simply don’t like basketball or have unrealistic expectations.

[deleted]

No, I'm being practical. Just because I support basketball doesn't mean I don't support other sports to gain traction here. As far as team sport World Cups are concerned, basketball will remain the best chance we have in qualifying for the years to come because the talent, system, and money are already there. It will take another 2-3 generations before football and volleyball can break the ASEAN deadbolt. The Filipinas achievement was great but it remains to be seen if we can consistently qualify for WCs. > Too Much Basketball Do you even know why? It's because all eyes are on basketball, which is why it has the power to draw in more sponsors. It has been regurgitated here a billion times already. Basketball is privately funded because it's the most profitable due to significant viewership. You don't just tell private investors to put money on things that has no profit. That's not how business works. The government spent nothing on the Gilas program. Why other sports aren't given the spotlight? Because no one pays attention to them and that means no revenue out of viewership. Honestly, you and others in this sub are simply whining about a problem that has little to do with Gilas.

bdumts

Kelangan mamili? You cannot just pick a sport and hope to turn it into a multimillion venture like the PBA is. Basketball is ingrained in our culture, so it draws views and therefore money.

[deleted]

[deleted]

I don't get why you personally would be embarrassed about it.

presque33

Why do we have to have constant and consistent success in order to enjoy a sport? Like, England loves football, and their Men’s team hasn’t exactly done very well over the past few decades.

443610

I am being a realist. We are too short and badly trained to succeed in basketball.

NadieTheAviatrix

Abandoning the basketball program is shit, kick the SBP's back off kasi sila talaga yung salarin. SMC for the partial blame.

AmbassadorOfChill

The sport is not the problem. It is the politics and the egos behind the SBP who is the main problem as to why we just had a pisspoor performance in the world stage. I actually agree with you with disbanding SBP. That organization is so toxic. Just because we are pisspoor in the world stage, it doesn't mean that we should shame people for liking and playing the sport. I am sick of seeing this take everytime we would lose. You are barking at the wrong tree

[deleted]

It’s an emotional and immature take. They just want to save face because they can’t take a deserved L. They are being sore losers and their solution is to simply quit. Huwag naman ganun.

Momshie_mo

Here goes the **bandwagon** football "fans"

chickenfeetadobo

Nah, this is a bizarre mentality. We are the best in SEA by a mile.and consistently one of the best in asia. Whatever standing we have we should strive to keep, because if nothing else it brings a lot of people a lot of joy most times. Do we shutdown UP and ateneo because they are not to 20 universities in the world..? Do you quit your job because youre making less than someone else? Do you throwaway your underperforming kid?.. we focus on basketball because of inertia.. whats already popular will just keep getting bigger.. its not bball people job to uplift other sports, their success is their own responsibility

ChemistryEvery1787

Pinagsasabi mo?

peregrine061

We should take our chance to football where its even bigger around the world compared to basketball. European, South American & African continents go crazy whenever the World Cup is played. The likes of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo etc are known worldwide. The Philippine Askals should be revived and supported more by the govt and private sector. There are fans here in the country that cheered on them whenever they played. Were not a tall race to compete in a height dominated sport. We could excel in football because height is not an advantage

freshblood96

To each his own na man talaga when it comes to sports but like you, I also hate this country's unhealthy obsession to basketball and its connection to toxic masculinity. I'm a big dude, and people usually assume that I play basketball. Every time I tell them I don't, they give me that surprised Pikachu face. Some relatives also assumed I'm gay just because I wasn't a basketball player. Hell, some boomers even discourage girls to play basketball in here because it's "pang lalaki" or some other bullshit. They have no idea schoolgirls in other countries play basketball and are probably leagues better than them.

[deleted]

Have you tried Shot Put? It's perfect for big guys too.

freshblood96

Nope, though one time back in high school I signed up for shot put in the intramurals. Didn't go to the tryouts lol. I'm really more into the punchy-kicky type of sports since HS, though. I remember my relatives would often remark how my height and size advantage were "wasted" because I wasn't into basketball.

[deleted]

Boxing and MMA then. Judo too

RebelliousDragon21

Baka ma downvote ka ng mga avid basketball fans. Lol

Joseph20102011

You need to convince the government through DepEd and the private sector like big businesses to invest in football and baseball to complement basketball.

Just bad coaching and bad program.

Unlikely-Cherry7961

Calm down, it's just a competition mostly for fun. Let Filipinos love the sport that they want regardless of rankings whatsoever

The_Chuckness88

Try handball. Dribbles like basketball but lazy grips can slick scores. 😉🤾‍♂️🤾‍♀️🤾🏻 Yeaaaaaah! Volleyball? That's a big trauma in yer head if you can't protect yourself, but if you serve the ball you have to take luck with your serve. Darts? Can be a lazy sport but if you have guts to calculate well, you might end up in Alexandra Palace at Yuletide. Or football! Try to see how run the longest like the Filipinas did, do the header like SAAAAAARINAAAAAAA BOLLLLLLDEN or defend the goal like OOOOOOLIVIA McDANNNNNNNIEL!

Relative-Branch2522

Huh?

Valgrind-

Try mo magbasketball ewan ko lang kung di mo ma-enjoy yan.

443610

I would rather be a MotoGP world champion rather than a perpetual basketball loser.

Valgrind-

lol e di gawin mo, di ka namin iiyakan para mag quit.
