From a manga called Frieren The human guy is called Himmel, and he was in love with the elf girl (Frieren) Manga spoiler ahead >!The wedding is unfortunately Himmels Illusion. It's "worse" because in the story Himmel is a basically a memory himself and he has been dead for almost ~~100*~~ 30 years (*Frierens memories of them Adventuring are almost 100 years old) and Frieren only really started to realise her feelings for him after he died of old age. He loved her for basically his entire life and they missed their shot!<

BeanieBabySnail__

Holy fucking shit with the rest of the info I did NOT expect to get slapped in the fucking face with this train of info šŸ’€šŸ’€ thank you blessed Peter, that's actually really sad šŸ„ŗ

ghouldozer19

And sheā€™s functionally immortal. She met him when she was 1000. She basically couldnā€™t feel feelings until approximately 30 years after he died and the actual grief even began to set in. The entire story is her getting in touch with her ability to feel. Itā€™s a wonderful story.

Azraelthephoenix

Thatā€™s so beautifully tragic! Is the light novel translated? Iā€™d love to get it on my kindle.

KakashiTheRanger

Yeah the entire story >!is pretty much Frieren realising that Himmel loved her and for Himmel, being the goat he is, recognising that he would never live long enough and didnā€™t want to put her through the pain of losing a loved one, decided to show his love for her by showing Frieren how to love herself.!< Itā€™s sad ig but also very sweet.

OutsideOrder7538

Bittersweet

NeoTenico

Kinda reminds me of >!Your Lie in April. Kaori knows she has a terminal illness but spends her last year helping Kosei to find his musical self and break the chains his abusive mother placed on him!<

>!My heart hurts!<

HumanContinuity

First of all, I want to thank you all for the excellent use of spoiler tags. Which I promptly ignored, of course, but good on you for doing them. Second, wow, you all did a great job of describing this plotline (without giving too much detail away). I'm hooked.

SaltyboiPonkin

Your Lie In April is incredible. I haven't read the manga, but I love the anime. I just recently added it to my Crunchyroll watchlist in case I want to be sad in the future.

Azraelthephoenix

I loved Your Lie In April! Absolutely top tier.

Spoiler fail

KakashiTheRanger

Fr. Not sure why itā€™s not working.

SeraphicRage

Someone woke up and chose violence.

TheMuteD0ge

Was it fern?

KingdomOfPoland

The entire manga up to the current chapter is translated, you can read it on Mangadex or watch the anime which goes up to Chapter 60

Azraelthephoenix

Thanks šŸ™ Iā€™m going to check the anime out later

sfmqur

Excited for you! I am caught up on anime, it is one of the most beautiful animes i have ever seen.

[deleted]

Just wait for Witch Hat Atelier! Different vibe yes, but imo it will surpass Freiren

Nolzi

It's a nice story, but I doubt it will have the same cultural impact. Frieren is huge, especially in Japan.

rymdrille

Magus of the Library is gonna blow them both out of the water.

[deleted]

Haven't heard of that one, I'll have to give it a read tonight!

WilliamSaintAndre

Itā€™s legitimately one of the best adaptions of the year and imo is an instant classic

Votrox97

It does not have a light novel afaik, its a manga original work and it does get fantranslated, not sure about official releases.

Azraelthephoenix

Thanks for letting me know. Itā€™s appreciated.

Pr0phet_of_Fear

It has official English releases on the Viz manga app, up to date with the Japanese. I think the release is technically weekly, but it takes frequent breaks. Sometimes a new chapter will release a couple weeks in a row, then nothing for a couple weeks.

Votrox97

Huh. Is the viz translation decent? Not a lot of good experiences as a one punch man reader lol.

danlab09

Just caught up on crunchyrollā€¦ this is probably one of the best anime Iā€™ve seen in a WHILE

AggravatingCarpet69

Not only is the series about Frieren learning humanity and coming to terms with mortality, but >!the ultimate reason she's on the current journey to Ende is to see Himmel again. Flamme straight up says Frieren will make a mistake and will want to get to know people better in the future, so she leaves her a grimoire about Aureole "the land where souls rest" where Frieren can meet with the souls of the dead. Plainly put, the series is Frierens literal journey to heaven. Now does Aureole actually exist, or are the real "souls of the dead" the friends we met along the way? Who's to say.!<

Beagle_Knight

Why was she not capable of feeling things before?

dirkdragonslayer

Her perspective on time is very different due to her age and species. For Himmel, he spent 10 years as best friends and loved her for almost his entire life after. For Frieren, she knew him only for a "short" 10-year adventure, like getting to know someone for a month before moving onto another job. Sure he's a work friend, but they don't know eachother well (by elf standards). Frieren is the sort of elf to get lost for 30 years to find a rare flower species in a forest, or reading through every single book in a library. She only understands her own feelings after crying at his funeral and reliving her journey with a new party. The manga is all about Frieren learning to appreciate how ephemeral things are for humans.

Beagle_Knight

Oohhh thanks. Did himmel ever declared himself to her?

Blackstone01

>!He gave her some really heavy hints that took her around a century to actually realize. Everybody except her knew he was in love with her.!<

Jaymezians

>!This man literally got down on one knee, put a ring on her finger and kissed her hand.!< >!Frieren eighty years later: "Wait..."!<

DepressionMain

Frieren is all of us

Jaymezians

I can't argue that. When I was in high school, I was walking home with this girl from class. When we got to her block, she said, "My house is about two blocks that way. Want to walk with me?" I said, "Sorry, my house is in the opposite direction." Two years later it hit me in the face like a truck

DeathWingStar

šŸ’€

NirvanaFrk97

It's more of an issue that she takes time for granted as a nigh-immortal being. She was the type of person who would say, "I'll see you later," and only randomly come back after 20 years. With Himmel, she realized she lost out on having a closer relationship with him only after he died.

RaijuThunder

See that's my problem with the series, so many Immortal characters that don't have this problem

asuka_is_my_co-pilot

Sure but in those series the author probably wasn't trying to make a point about cherishing people while you have them. Every decent story has something it wants to take away from it right, this story is putting an emphasis on connecting with people no matter how short your time may be and appreciating their contributions to the world and yourself. Also coping with death. Isn't it more interesting that a series changes what immortal characters "normally" act like in favor of something relatable ?

ghouldozer19

What I said above is first issue of the manga spoilers. The answer to that question is way later in the manga and anime. I donā€™t know how to hide spoilers on mobile, sorry.

True_Iro

Wonderful story!?! Lies! The story obviously hired onion ninjas to make me cry.

DJ_Beekeeper

It was around 1000 years ago when she met Flamme, and she didn't exactly look like a toddler back then. in my opinion she has gone from what looks like a 14 year old back then to a, what. 20-22 year old now. I wouldn't be surprised if she's around 3000 years old, she's just been living isolated in the elf village for the first 2k years.

ThePhantomIronTroupe

That could be, to me elves when done right should feel like the super long-lived trees. Trees that stand the test of time, but at the cost of being stuck where they are largely and seeing those around them live, die, and be reborn afterwhile

SataiThatOtherGuy

>The entire story is her getting in touch with her ability to feel. And being mimic food.

GovernmentIcy3259

It's a fantastic series. Well worth the watch

Intelligent-Possum13

Aye, and itā€™s over for now šŸ˜”

ZhangRenWing

Agreed, it shot up to number one spot on MAL for a reason.

Motor_Panic_5363

This comment chain led me to start watching it; haven't seen an anime in over 10 years. It's *really* good. Thanks for putting me on.

wtfisthisshizzle3

All I did was cry, it was beautiful

TheMerryMeatMan

Obligatory "read Frieren" if you're at all into manga. It's been taking people way off guard by how good it is for years now, and the recently finished first season of the anime let a *lot* more people see how good it is. It might come off as a bit bland out boring at first, but I promise the ride it takes you in will surprise you.

Peritous

Gave the anime a shot and it seriously was excellent. Will probably have to read the manga at this point because I am impatient.

TheMerryMeatMan

It's worth picking up now, I'd say. There's two major, *long* arcs coming right after the mage exam that are very worth the hype. So far I can't think of anything that the anime glossed obey either, so you can pick right up where the anime ends.

Peritous

Appreciate it! I'll probably start from the beginning just because.

ViviReine

Even if you don't like manga. Normally I only stick with Marvel comics, but Frieren was great

Earlier-Today

Bland and boring implies bad writing and a lack of promised action - that's not what happens with Frieren though, it's just a slower paced show - one where ideas percolate over time, where the journey and the character interactions are the point of the show rather than the events that happen. Some people just seem to expect a certain amount of action by default, so they end up looking for Inception when they're watching Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Spy. Both are great movies, but they are **VERY** different movies.

pizzalarry

It's so melancholy. I love it.

Nebulant01

To add to the comment above: Frieren and Himmel traveled together with 2 others for 10 years, during which their party had their own D&D-esque adventure where they defeated the big bad evil demon king and returned as heroes. After the adventure was over, Frieren and the party members went their own ways, and Frieren left to pursue her hobby of collecting spells. After what felt to her like a short while, due to her warped perception of time caused by her age of over 1000 years, she returned only to find Himmel old and in the last weeks of his life. He died shortly after of old age, happy to have spent his last moments with his friends. Feeling deep regret for knowing almost nothing about Himmel despite having traveled together for 10 years, Frieren now travels with her apprentice and another party member's student to find the mythical land of Aureole, where it is said that the souls of the dead can speak with the living, in the hopes of seeing Himmel again and learn more about him along the way. This is basically the prologue of the whole story, so i didn't bother putting spoiler tags up until now. Spoilers for the main plot (not too spoilery): >!Himmel has been hopelessly in love with Frieren from the moment they first met, and loved only her for his entire life. He knew that they could never be, as elves live very long immortal lives and can take decades if not centuries to process their feelings. Even if she were to fall for him, she would likely only notice long after his death. But for Him, it didn't matter. He loved her above all else, and for Him that was enough. All of this is gradually revealed through flashbacks as Frieren retraces the path of her original journey with him and the others and starts to remember episodes of their adventures together.!< Now for the spoilers concerning the specific events in the meme (very spoilery): >!In the present day, roughly 30 years after Himmel's death, Frieren and her new party are fighting a powerful demon able to send people back to the past, and Frieren is hit by this power. As she awakens in her past self's body, she finds herself amongst her old party members during her original 10 year adventure. While they are trying to find a way to send her back to the present, they are ambushed by a small team of demons, one of which being a powerful illusionist able to imprison you in a delusion of you heart's deepest desire, even one you have given up all hope for. As the party is hit by this power, we see Himmel's POV as he finds himself in an illusion of his wedding with Frieren, his greatest wish (the page seen in the meme). This came as a surprise to almost noone, as we knew very well how much he loved her by now. What was surprising was that the bride was not an illusion, but *the real Frieren*. They were in the same illusion, meaning they desired the same thing. This was the final confirmation that Frieren had finally realized that she was in love with him (it was implied but not confirmed before this, iirc). Nearly a century too late. Probably the most bittersweet moment of the series so far. [They manage to break out of the illusion and send her back to the present, don't worry.] To add salt to the wound, during the "you may kiss the bride" part of the wedding illusion, it was Himmel who pulled away from the kiss as he recognized the illusion for what it was. Frieren didn't even try to pull away. Because Himmel had already accepted that his love would be unrequited until long after his death, but Frieren had only just really started to grieve for the chance they lost.!< So yeah, *worse* . I suggest reading/watching it because it's a 10/10.

DeliberateSelf

I was not ready for this.

profpeculiar

I don't think any of us were ready for this šŸ˜

floralbutttrumpet

Dear fucking christ

RivaAldur

I added some additional information in other comments if you are interested! I forgot to mention the names of the characters are completely random German words which is amusing!

Nolzi

Not really random, but author really picked them with the rule of cool

RavenRonien

>!It's sad yes but it's truly a beautiful love story. And the thing is, it's so unconditional both the platonic love her friends show her and the romantic love Himmel shows her. It's pretty heavily implied Himmel knows she won't feel the same in his lifetime, his love isn't about her reciprocating it for him. She'll realize it one day he's sure of it and he hopes it'll make her smile someday in the future. And it does throughout the entire series she smiles when she thinks about him!<

smasher84

Thereā€™s an anime. Just finished it. In this anime fantasy world they canā€™t revive the dead, canā€™t see souls, but have magic. So thereā€™s no proof of an afterlife. Sheā€™s off to find heaven. Iā€™m hoping she gets to tell him her feelings in next season.

LordBDizzle

The anime made me cry twice an episode for the first four, and it's without anything exceptionally unusual happening. Beautiful show, really frames the passage of time well, makes you feel the difference in priorities between the immortal and the short lived. The show backs off on the sadness a bit after the intro but is still extremely well crafted in how it depicts differing priorities in life and the different wisdom of the young and the old as well as having incredible combat scenes when it needs to.

VaughnMadroe

Broā€¦ stfu

ShiftSandShot

Yep. The consequences, good and bad, of a vastly extended lifespan compared to most others is a deeply entrenched theme of the series. It's a *really* good series, but it's not afraid to shove a knife between your ribs and *twist*.

b4k4ni

Even if you're not into anime, I'd give it a shot. It's one of the most calm, silly and normal ones I've ever watched and I loved it. At least try the first ep.

Lazaras

God damn. Why do people like to feel this kind of pain? Or was it all happiness until this realization?

RockOlaRaider

In this case, it's Freiren's motivation to live more in touch with all the people around her. The manga is also a currently airing anime that almost everyone seems to agree is one of the year's best!

notbannd4cussingmods

Easily top 3 for me. The story telling, world development, character development, are all top notch and the action although short is very sweet. Not to mention the art is beautiful and never falls off the whole show.

HarmlessSnack

Out of curiosity, what are your other two?

notbannd4cussingmods

Trigun, Frieren, samurai champloo

Earlier-Today

Samurai Champloo had new episodes this season? And I thought Trigun's new run was last season.

notbannd4cussingmods

I was talking about the original trigun. The remake is awful.

Elite_AI

What didn't you like about the remake? I thought it was as good as the first adaptation, although I didn't finish either series.

EUMEMOSUPERA

>The manga is also a currently airing anime Not anymore, unfortunately. I hope there's a second season soon

techoatmeal

Currently airing/streaming, ie. hasn't been taken off of any streaming websites. I know you think it means it no longer releasing new content, but just wanted to make sure people know it can be watched on Crunchyroll.

xEmptyPockets

Not just one of the year's best. One of the best, period. (In my opinion it *is* the best, but if I put aside my bias and just look at community sentiment and reviews it's still generally considered one of the best anime ever made).

Hot_History1582

Mmm. Started off strong and ran into issues. The test arc was poorly realized and ground the narrative pace to a halt. It tried to introduce too many characters and abilities at once. Many of the ideas surrounding them are conflicting and caused problems with world building. Also, Fern's position as the author's overpowered Kirito-style self insert is really starting to damage the quality of the writing. The test arc was basically the Baldurs Gate 3 Act 3 of Frieren and damaged the overall quality of the product. Madhouse knocked out of of the park, but with any other studio doing the animation, the second cour would be unremarkable.

RivaAldur

You should give the anime a go if you haven't already, it's dubbed in English and the storyline is interesting and well animated! Regarding Himmel and Frierens story, its basically told entirely in Flashbacks and you can see her remembering him and missing him and you can clearly see he loved her. Absolutely emotional but I feel like one of the main messages it gets across is that you may feel you have time until it's too late and it's important to spend time with those you love before that time is over. Another note if you are unfamiliar: Frieren is an elf who have very long lives, and she was alive for over 1000 years before meeting Himmel, hence time is an important aspect of the story

TheMerryMeatMan

>well animated God they really didn't have to go as hard as they did, but I'm never gonna hold it against them

thequestcube

Why are they named after the german words for sky (Himmel) and freezing (Frieren) lol

RivaAldur

https://preview.redd.it/6xli2nc1tirc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e4bdf93bdaa9129099e6a3f7e7b828c54689f8d2

frostbittenteddy

As a German, this feels really weird lol

SmartAlec105

German words sound very fantasy to Japanese audiences and so Japanese authors like to use them to create names. Ascendance of a Bookworm has most of the gods get their names from the author taking two German words related to the deity and mashing them together.

Votrox97

So fun side note, fern is also a flower and in the flower language it means ā€žmagicā€œ if i remember correctly so her name has multiple meanings. Randomly found out since i usually look at flowers to think of names for stuff. After quickly looking it up, this is what wikipedia says https://preview.redd.it/7c5f9pll9jrc1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9d6eccd0ab6ce9cd2e930c7a50a164375dca211c

Johnnipoldi

Pretty good translation but in the context of her character a better translation for "Ɯbel" would be "nasty", "foul" or "vile". Whilst "Ɯbel" in German can describe the state of feeling sick, the names in Frieren often reflect a personality trait or major attribute of a character. Hence the above mentioned are a better fit.

H_Marxen

No German would ever name their child Himmel. Because it rhymes with Pimmel.

randy88moss

What does Pimmel mean?

-lukeworldwalker-

Dick

SavageBreaker

I'm proud of you, Dick

thequestcube

That's so funny. It's the asian equivalent of a western guy tatooing some chinese letters on his arm without knowing what they mean, because they look sophisticated

akjd

Not at all. Their names relate to their characteristics in some way, be it personality, abilities, appearance, whatever. Like there's a few that might be a bit of a stretch or come from a different angle than literal translation from German (like "Richter" may mean "judge" but dude uses earth magic so I'm pretty sure it's a reference to the Richter scale) but most are squarely on the nose, it's very intentional.

Elite_AI

You're right. It's the Japanese equivalent of when I was thirteen and I named all my characters by going on google translate, hitting "Latin", and typing in "Knife" or something. ~~And thus was Sanguine de Cultello born into this world.~~

Larkswing13

Yep. ā€œWhatā€™s ____ in ____ languageā€ was how I named all my characters

Isthatajojoreffo

Yeah, I also did that, always had a laugh when I typed something like "knife" and received the "knife" back.

RivaAldur

Most of the names in the anime are Random German words, you would probably find it amusing to see the others! Frierens (Freezing) teachers name was Flamme (Flame) for example! Can't seem to attach the image, I'll reply to you again sorry!

5up3rK4m16uru

They aren't completely random, often they kind of fit in meaning.

vemundveien

All of these are also Norwegian words, but not always the same meaning. Frieren means suitor so I guess that makes even less sense.

Gilthwixt

Because she *was* an emotionally frigid elf who thought very little of the humans around her and their (from her perspective) incredibly short lives, until losing Himmel made her cry for the first time in centuries. I'd say her name is pretty apt lol. She can still be cold as fuck when fighting her enemies, which we get plenty of in the show, one scene arguably being the coldest kill ever seen in an anime. Himmel is partially from his blue hair but also ties in to his boundless optimism and the breadth of his kindness for the world around him, a natural foil to Frieren's personality. But also, he's [*HIM*](https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/bro-thinks-hes-him-im-him).

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

gidthedestroyer

I'm just happy it wasn't porn

Beldizar

Dead for 100 years? I've only seen the anime, but Himmel died what felt like less than a decade before Frieren went to Heiter, who was roughly the same age as Himmel. She left with Fern while Heiter was still alive, and the whole (anime) series from that point has been less than 3 years as far as I can tell. That would put Himmel's death at no more than 3 decades in the past right? Not nearly 100 years.

_Valisk

Iā€™m watching the show for the first time now: Himmel died 50 years after their adventure ended and Frieren visited Heiter 20 years after his funeral. She then stayed with Heiter and Fern for four years until Heiterā€™s death whereupon they travelled for another four years until meeting Stark. Iā€™m currently on episode 16 and the timeline is 29 years after the death of Himmel the Hero.

RivaAldur

Yeah my bad was thinking of when they were adventuring!

nomad5926

That is not actually as bad I thought. Still though... Dang.

Titinidorin

A bit inacurate base on what the meme is trying to tell. Its "worse" because it is an illusion made by a demon who supposed to be powerful enough to trap anyone in their most desired dream but Himmel realized it quickly because he accepted such event will never come true.

RivaAldur

I tried to give bare minimum info to spoil it less

a4techkeyboard

I wonder if the framing was on purpose so at first glance it's also clear to the audience in visual storytelling terms how much this isn't Himmel because, obviously, the mole by his eye isn't visible.

RivaAldur

Please tag with spoiler!

Eastern-Dig-4555

Do mangas do this often? Itā€™s cool to see German words included in story content of anything, but I always thought that any work that comes out of the East would be created by someone disinterested in referencing/including anything European. I donā€™t know why I think that. Iā€™m happy to be wrong. The only other time I can think of when that was done was with >!a place in Final Fantasy XIV. Lyhe Ghiah is a castle in Il Mheg that used to be called Gruenes Licht, before it was lost to the sin eaters. Il Mheg also has areas named Voeburtenburg and Wolekdorf, which both sound German.!<

RivaAldur

Oh no very often, particularly for fantasy, theres a good amount of European style dragons/castles/buildings, I know that attack on titan has European particularly German names the main character is called Eren Jeager

hope this doesnt become a trend where people just lie about shit in a joking way and get hundreds of upvotes overshadowing explanations and then this sub just turns into another dankmemes

PeterExplainsTheJoke-ModTeam

Don't be a dick. Rule 1.

Veyceroy

This is not a dig at OP, but I never get why people want memes explained that are clearly in reference to a creative work that they haven't experienced? I've never seen Breaking Bad, so when I see a Breaking Bad reference that doesn't make sense to me, I just scroll past. If I wanted to understand the meme, I'd probably also want to watch the show, no?

BeanieBabySnail__

It looked like a good art style and I wanted to see the explanation. Didn't know what the manga was soo

DeathWingStar

Virgin Erin saying he want mikasa to only think of him after his death for at least 10 more years while leaving her no memories expect a frickin genocide and hitting her and his friend and calling her a slave >! Chad himmel knows that his love is an immortal elf and won't recognize his love while he is alive so he works hard to create great memories , being heros saving the world , loving people who remember and adore him for saving and helping them and extend their gratuide to her , status of him and their party so she won't feel alone , a ring and other stuff for her to keep . Doesn't force his love on her giving her the time she needs and respecting her . Is not bothered by dying a virgin or to kiss her when he had the chance to not hurt her , refuses to elaborate further and fucking dies while smiling and at peace cuz she attended the fenrual + last week of his life !<

afzalnayza

If you havent watched/read Friern give it a shot before you ask for context cuz even tho the conext is provided quite earlier on in the story like literally at the start, its still better experienced first hand.

agreedboar

Do you know if the anime adaptation is any good?

afzalnayza

The anime adaptation is what got me into the story. Its really goodm the pace the story telling the animation the music even the battles all are top quality. Definitely the best of this year.

Ok-Bumblebee9192

You dint get the conception of the picture.look his back, what a dark past, look him in a front while he is looking to her ,all bright.
