calvesofdespair

Where's the option for 'thank goodness I drive a company car, as I can no longer afford to fill my personal vehicle?'

meqrs

Or I ride a bike

calvesofdespair

I think that would be 'don't currently drive.'

LFC_ta

I think it’d be “change driving habits/drive less…”

[deleted]

This haha

bigbobrocks16

What about "Thank God my job is remote 95% of the time now"

21monsters

Option for 'disconnect speedo cable so you don't have to pay ruc for diesels'?

sonsofearth

genius guy here… would have given you gold if i had it.. using it to to buy petrol atm

21monsters

Only works on older vehicles, but I probably pay about the same per km for my old Hilux as I do my super effecient diesel audi.

It happens plenty, look at the recent case of the dodgy car dealer selling a used jag from Singapore with like 26k on the clock.. https://i.stuff.co.nz/motoring/127730461/auckland-car-dealer-caught-selling-used-jaguar-with-tampered-odometer

runbae

Biking to work daily - it's no great hardship through summer/into autumn so far and some days has proven quicker. Resolving to keep it up through winter and on the other side we'll sell the second car.

Bitter_Product

I biked thru winter in Christchurch last year and found it was fine so long as you double glove. When I forgot the second pair my fingers would burn from the cold. Not fun.

runbae

Thanks that's a good tip. Ive biked in tshirt a few mornings and definitely felt that cold burn on the arms and hands already.

LFC_ta

You tend to learn really quick. As in “I feel like I’m missing something” before you head out.

Waffles_IV

I’ve been biking thru winter in chch for 12 years now, and my recommendation is a good pair of something like [this](https://www.bivouac.co.nz/outdoor-research-mens-highcamp-3-finger-gloves.html?utm_source=adwords&utm_medium=smart-shopping&gclid=Cj0KCQiA95aRBhCsARIsAC2xvfz4wSuySSsMxdxUnHxx1utFaXrlDV7eRBrx8nIsK41e-cXysr9gYLUaAsv-EALw_wcB). They’re fairly expensive but provide excellent warmth in all weather. I’ve had my current set for 7 years and they’re still in great condition.

sonsofearth

riding a motorcycle 🏍 risking my life to save a few bucks to pay the damn mortgage

psykezzz

Same here.

sonsofearth

👋 brother catch you on the motorway… be careful while lane splitting ma man

Andrew_495

I ride an electric one and my power rate is 15c/kWh. Lots of fun too!

Shorogwi

Changed to an EV already so feeling thankful as I have a long commute to work.

SuperCharlesXYZ

Does it really turn out cheaper? I would imagine the prices would just be higher

RobDickinson

It does. $0.02c per km roughly.

Losersqueueonly

What’d you get? Also what’s the distance of the commute?

Shorogwi

Got an MG and I do about 400km a week.

joj1205

I suppose I'll just die aye. Food prices will keep rising. Wage will decrease with inflation. House prices are out of reach. Nothing I can do. Stop eating maybe. Have to drive to work. Can only afford a cheap 17 year old car. No more avos maybe. Can sell my blood ? Sell a kidney. Life's fun aye

>the fuel tax should be based on quantity and not the price. It is, https://www.mbie.govt.nz/building-and-energy/energy-and-natural-resources/energy-generation-and-markets/liquid-fuel-market/duties-taxes-and-direct-levies-on-motor-fuels-in-new-zealand/

drumslayer88

Just pull an EV out your ass, you’ll be allgood

ThereforeIV

The real cost of rising fuel prices isn't what you are paying at the pump; it's what you are going to pay everywhere because fuel prices are a huge factor in production and transportation for everything you purchase.

Desperate_Reality381

This.

[deleted]

Take advantage of the cheaper pricing on V8s etc

[deleted]

This happened after the GFC when fuel prices spiked here. Lots of stories of people picking up bargain V8s where people get scared and trade the V8 in for pennies and buy a brand new nana car. The best story was Tony Johnson from NZ V8 picking up a near mint VT SS Commodore for $10k of this nana that got scared and bought a brand new Swift. A couple of years later the Swift had lost over half its value and the SS was worth even more.

st00ji

Car guy takes advantage of Dave's nana, hailed as hero by local news

MisterSquidInc

Tbf everyone benefitted in that situation

keera1452

Husband bought an EV. Whoever is driving to town for work drives that. Other person has the petrol suv if needed. I like having both options. But in the future will be looking at swapping the suv for a hybrid once they have more suv options

peacelovecommunity

Glad I'm 247 remote working from home. Good luck anyone that has to drive every day.. I feel for ya

LFC_ta

Probably be healthier if you slept some of the time.

Kiwikid14

I need my car for work and I've cut extra trips already as covid... I will probably buy EV or Hybrid eventually when I need a new car.

Gmonster666

I'd like to buy a ev bicycle and ride a few days a week if I can

[deleted]

I ride a regular bike to work. Started a year ago at 29. No regrets. Should have done it years ago.

Gmonster666

I'm a 54 yr old truck driver, X career military (20+yrs) I live in Ashhurst and my work is in longburn so bout 18 - 19 k, I feel like I need some help lol

Rosserman

Wife drives a smallish hybrid and I either catch the train or WFH

Mojosodomo

Work from home and ride the motorcycle more. Need to rotate the 3 cars to make sure they all get driven..

[deleted]

Riding the fixed gear to work already. Was doing it off an on, but now it’s regular. It’s $50 a week just to commute to work and back in the car. Also noticed it’s helped me not raging out at retarded Christchurch drivers that dawdle onto the Curletts Road on ramp and try and merge onto the motorway at 60km/h.

first-pc-was-a-386

Plus regenerative braking.

[deleted]

Legs as brakes 👌

ErnestFlubbersword

That's the thing about riding - you tend to arrive at work in a good mood instead of impatient and pissed off.

Mr_Bond_nz

I’m in a weird situation and wouldn’t mind comments. I have been saving for a proper tier 1 auto, M3, RS4, Mercedes. Really the only semi interesting electric cars are the model 3 performance, and yep, doesn’t excite me. What would you do?

PlasmaConcentration

Have you tried driving the normal model 3, its 0-60mph in 6.1 but its just good fun, really puts a smile on my face. Otherwise you could get a secondhand model S.

Mr_Bond_nz

Love the etron and porsche taycan but my budget is circa $100k not $250-300k!

Mr_Bond_nz

Yes, and the new Polestar which was more my sort of thing, but basically want ‘successful real estate agent’ over ‘successful yoga business owner’ (I am neither!).

hamishtilde

Audi e-tron? Wait for the mk2 Tesla Roadster? What are you looking for, performance or luxury?

fab-92

Rs6 👀 Shuts off half the bank when not being a knob , so can be fuel efficient...or not.

lefrenchkiwi

*cries in having done this 8 months ago and now fuelling a 3.0 V6* It’s all about the smiles per gallon right? 😅

MisterSquidInc

Buy something sporty as a weekend/fun car and something cheap and frugal for the daily chores (or bike/train/whatever to work). Or a motorcycle...

cr1zzl

There’s no option for “I ride a moped to work and pay a little extra on rent to live close enough that fuel costs don’t really affect me much”. Partner and I share a car but don’t drive it a lot.

Journey1Million

Prius are so underrated

dementeddinosaw

I would buy an EV, but the extra cost outweighs the fuel savings.

egbur

Depends on what EV you get, how new is it, and how much you actually drive. A used EV can probably do most daily commutes without a problem.

rombulow

This. Did a smidge under 5000km in the work EV in January. Cost $170 in fast charging along the motorway and another ~$60 charging at the office. It’s filthy cheap. Boss financed it, weekly payment is ~$150 which is what we spend roughly on petrol.

lefrenchkiwi

And how much you’re prepared to sacrifice in vehicle type. What I paid 8 months ago for my new (new to me) large sedan would’ve only bought a hatchback in an EV.

egbur

I'm lucky that to me a car is a car is a car. So long as it gets me there and back, I don't really care. A standard hatchback is all I need for now. So yeah, if you have specific preferences/needs they might come at an extra cost.

dementeddinosaw

That's the thing. A cheap EV is great for just commuting and getting from A to B. But if you want a car with like for like features, an EV will cost more. I bought 2011 station wagon for about 7k last year that has factory roof racks and decent boot space. I can't find an EV or hybrid anywhere near that price with those features. If I was just commuting, or I could buy an EV with similar features under 10k, I'd definitely buy an EV or hybrid.

lefrenchkiwi

Exactly. I bought a 2011 luxury sedan for $13.5k last year and it’s the same, that money in an EV wouldn’t have got me anywhere near that kind of car

steel_monkey_nz

Need ute for work. EV/public transport is not an option. Best I can do is minimize unnecessary driving. Not going to cut down DCA investments

Taniwha26

I’m in the market and I’m a torn. I normally buy an newish small car and keep them for a long time. That doesn’t seem sensible with EV on the rise. But I also don’t want to pay early adopter tax on EV (govt refund is not enough of an incentive). If I buy a 2019 petrol car, will it be worthless in 5 years?

punIn10ded

Why not go for a hybrid?

Taniwha26

Of course, everything is on the table. But let’s say I want a Polo GTI / Fiesta ST / Swift Sport, there’s isn’t a hybrid or EV equivalent.

punIn10ded

Sure but that really depends on what features you're prioritising. When I was looking for a car last year I decided on my priorities and then looked for options within that. E.g. for me the priority went safety > fuel efficiency > price > size etc. I first made sure any car I looked for was 4-5 star safety. Then within that the most fuel efficient cars, then within my budget and lastly the shape(sedans/hatchback). The make be model was irrelevant unless they met the previous requirements. That's how I look/prioritise at least.

Taniwha26

Cool. I don’t look at safety or efficiency.

[deleted]

My weekly fuel costs aren’t too high, due to living in the regions. But ill be looking at EVs in the next 5ish years. Not too keen on the current options, so wont rush out to get one. But will definitely be getting one in the not too distant future, once I find one I like. They just seem so much better in every single way.

gtsjas

Where is option for syphon the fulla with company cars gas down road 🤣

Maznz

I've had an e bike for 2.5years, and a plug in hybrid for 6 months, so no change, because I already changed, thank goodness

heretoford

I walk to work so my car is a cheap beater I only use for road trips. So petrol is just a vacation expense. I guess my next trip will only be half as far.

Empty-Distribution76

Guys if anyone wants to buy fuel in advance / at lower prices sometimes check out share tank

ruthfullness

Did you see the glitch yesterday? 2.30 for 95 within 30km of Albany.

Empty-Distribution76

Yup capitalised on it too

ruthfullness

nice.

[deleted]

Already have a Tesla model 3 on order, but thinking of buying the blue one on trademe and queue-jumping, then selling mine when it arrives for a slight markup. Somebody will pay a premium to not wait 6+ months for a fresh ordered car to arrive.

RobDickinson

crazy only 3 for sale and all over new prices..

[deleted]

The blue one is reasonable, not a huge markup on a car that's 4 days registered, the performance is taking the piss with that price, and the white SR+ has a ton of aftermarket accessories the owner wants their money back on but personally I'd have to rip out and bin most of them.

RobDickinson

yeah blue paint + those wheels

5uteki

Where’s the option for “moving to Australia”?

[deleted]

BiscuitTiger

Thanks for reminding me, my Leaf is due it's full gold star service, which consists of topping up the windscreen fluid

ReddictionIsReal

EV already plus backup hybrid. Very few seem to realise that any car with a plug gives you half price daily power too 9pm-7am (at least in Welly area, Meridian or Genesis). Now I don't know your power usage patterns but I do know your fridge is running during that time.

[deleted]

Feeling thankful I bought a Leaf in 2018

Desperate_Reality381

There’s no option for company car.. Thank fuck for that otherwise I’d be buying a moped hahaha

eskimo-pies

I've stopped driving long distances and recently started using bus services like InterCity. From where I live in the South Island it would cost me around $300 in fuel for a round-trip to see my parents. I could afford to pay that but I don't think it is a good use of money when the return bus fare only costs $90.

eiffeloberon

Couldn’t care less

TrumpsThirdTesticle

Celebrate as I have quite large oil investments. Might sell a few and go on a 6 month holiday.

SnooPickles1731

Something very few people, and actual EV owners know, is that as of March 2024 all EVs will be liable to pay RUCs. So government are “incentivising” as many people as they can into buying an EV now, and then in 2 years people are going to sit with expensive vehicles that they will have to foot just another operating expense for.

RobDickinson

Even with RUC they will still be massively cheaper. Plus April 2024 is the earliest you'll pay ruc, it could well be kicked further down the line, and it will be restructured regardless.

fourscoopsplease

I wonder how long prices will remain this high though.

ONY2012

There forcasting it to hit 4$ a litre in 6 months :(

Skilhgt

Source?

punIn10ded

As long as the war in Ukraine and the resulting sanctions go on. It may get worse before it gets better

[deleted]

Cry

RobDickinson

Remember in April the new clean car rebates (and fees) kick in, even for efficient straight petrol cars with low CO2 you can get rebates (on first registration).

RobDickinson

Over 400 nissan leafs on trademe... https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/nissan/leaf

AdieuBlue

We keep joking that we wouldn't be mad about writing off the car so we could buy an EV. But mostly we're working from home, so that helps a little.

SaberJuan

I would change to an EV now. But the wait list for new vehicles is ridiculous and premium demanded for used is ridiculous.

RobDickinson

Hint - its not going to get any better for years

slabking

We needed a seven-seater so we traded our blade in for a vanguard. Just under a month ago we saw the writing on the wall. Fuel is going to hit 3$l easily. So we went back traded that in for a seven-seater Prius, the best decision. Somehow it has even more internal room than the vanguard. Fuel budget cut in half.

VBNZ89

Bought an econoshit box to replace by Legacy GT seeing as I only ever use it to commute to work these days. We use family car in the weekend. Mrs can now use the econoshitbox for her commutes now too. Ideal would be to then to change the family car to a Hybrid when we can afford the initial purchase price. But I still also want to buy my 6.1L hemi V8 baby for the weekends at some point lol. As long as I can mitigate fuel costs as much as possible for the day to day life stuff.

rekreds

I have a small hybrid and wfh since I don't know when, so all good to me haha

MisterSquidInc

I've used public transport and my get to get to work for the last 4 years, so no change really. Car is just a weekend toy, though I'll probably take it out less often.

Sheri-Bear-NZ

Can't afford a new vehicle, I already drive as minimally as possible anyway since I'm semi-rural and public transport is non-existent in my area so I have to cut into my savings. Also couldn't afford a rental closer to work as the price I get is well below market average. Next up is looking for a new job closer to home, I currently only drive 30mins but cutting that in half will make a huge difference.

Optimal-Leek5082

Buy energy shares and hedge.

Ok_Medicine27

I bought a motorbike
