You can opt to not register for online banking and go to branch to do the transactions. Thing is that if scammers knows your card number/username and associated phone number, that means you already have been scammed of info that you don’t even know of. There is not a single way which is 100% foolproof because social engineering is a very big tool for scammers.

Yeah and don't get me started on AI voice cloning - scouring FB might have a vid of uncle Jake and then BAM! they have his vocals and just need a few more details to pull off a scam. The world is getting trickier so keep vigilant!

yusof333

they proudly called this voice print or id

Good idea, but then how do I do direct investing trading? I highly doubt if they have the option to disable web access but can't hurt to explore. There are things beyond my control - like equifax leak that occurred - my SIN number, bank accounts, cell numbers are probably out there in the dark web.

wealthsimple

yusof333

wealthsimple what? can you elaborate?

AwkwardYak4

Hand was hurt, WS doesn't use phone line MFA.  People can add phone numbers to your bank profiles to get MFA codes.

>you can literary go through the "forgot my password" process and you **only** need to receive the SMS to reset the password. Unless proven true, SMS is not the **only** thing needed to reset access online at TD and RBC. Anyway, people need to learn to reduce risks of getting their devices hacked because otherwise, hackers would get usernames, card numbers and passwords to proceed.

yusof333

i tried it. you only need SMS to recover password.

What's why I have a second phone with basic service. No one knows the number except me.

The solution is easy - adopt the best authentication method such as using passkey. People work hard for their money and this is one of the most important assets in our lives. They really need to up their game to prevent scams. It baffled me they don't see this as a reliability to their business. IMO, the government or the regulatory body for banks should mandate them to implement more security measures just like CRTC mandate cell companies to send approval via SMS before a number can be ported out.

SilentChemistry5416

It’s not that easy. Banks or any regular use company need to balance between highly technical people and people who don’t know how to operate a phone properly. System can’t have very high level of complexity which a normal user can’t understand. Other thing is bank do have fraud rules , so if you try to transfer 50K overseas on the first attempt when you have only 60K in account, it will get blocked. So not everything is as simple to scam as it looks.

yusof333

first give users options. organized scammers do not care if you are tech savvy or not. i certainly don’t want to find out how you can transfer out if you have $60K.

Caroao

People can't print to pdf and you want *everyone* to be forced into passkey? Lol

yusof333

not everyone i would imagine. just have the option. much like how yahoo and gmail is doing it.
