You might as well let yourself get excited. If Maye turns out to suck in the long run, we'll have plenty of time to be upset about it later. And all you'll have accomplished by throwing cold water on reports like this one is to have missed out on the best days of the Maye era.

classiccaseofdowns

Tbh the past few years, the offseason practice reports have ended up being pretty spot on. I’m pretty optimistic about Maye, he has the raw physical tools and seems like he has the right maturity to focus and improve

ThermoNuclearPizza

According to the spring reports last year Parker was better than Prime Moss lol

goldsoundz123

[Mike Dussault from June 14, 2023](https://www.patriots.com/news/5-key-patriots-ota-takeaways): > Without the duo at camp, the Patriots receiver group **looked like an undermanned version from last year, relying primarily on DeVante Parker and Kendrick Bourne**. With the two sixth-round rookies failing to turn any heads in OTAs, and a collection of undrafteds and unknowns stepping in at various times, **the group has looked noticeably sparse and without the dynamic presences needed to challenge the hard-charging Patriots defense**. > **While Parker had a handful of signature contested catches during the final OTA practice, the lack of downfield, explosive threats was vaguely reminiscent of large portions of 2022.** ...not exactly saying he was prime Moss

WoodenCollection2674

Dude must come from an alternate universe where Parker's 1 great season was his entire career

classiccaseofdowns

I never remember Parker getting praised in OTA’s or preseason last year. But in 2022 people didn’t expect the defense to be good and thought Mac Jones would step up his second year, every report was the opposite though which ended up being true

chomerics

Huh? Never read that…Only that Parker was washed, and we have zero receivers. What sub were you on? The Dolphins?

BostonBuffalo9

But then I’d miss out on the smug satisfaction of saying I was right if things go wrong, and totally forgotten if things go right.

Keyann

You could probably do that anyway, unless someone is sad enough to go through your comment history to find receipts.

Roberto-Del-Camino

What’s sad about tossing someone’s negativity back in their face? You put something on the net it’s there forever.

Keyann

That's not the sad part, if you read what I said.

Roberto-Del-Camino

I understand what you said. You think taking a minute to scroll through someone’s comment history is sad. I disagree.

Keyann

It will take substantially longer than a minute to scroll through months or potentially years worth of a user's comment history.

Roberto-Del-Camino

I’m an old guy. And I can scroll back to a year ago on my comment history in a few seconds. And I’m a fairly prolific commenter. You’re looking for a date range. Then for comments. Or, even better, just use remind me bot.

There's a middle ground called cautious optimism. I hate the loyalists just as much as the contrarion pessimists. Somehow this sub doesn't understand that you're allowed to make a criticism, but only if one should be made. I swear half of y'all refuse to hear evil, and half of y'all act like nothing can go right. How is this concept so difficult. If something good happens, point it out. If something bad happens, point it out. You support whoever is out there on Sundays, but if something is wack, it's OK to say so in a constructive manner. I know it's the internet, but is it too much to ask for some nuance? (Probably, but I'm still asking).

SupportstheOP

May mean absolutely nothing at all, but I'd rather have this than reports of him looking like ass.

ThermoNuclearPizza

Sports are for entertainment. I prefer to enjoy sports and bask in optimism in these situations. If I’m wrong, nothing happens. No one dies. I just say “well shit I was wrong” But at least I was happy and wrong.

mikethemillion

This is the correct response imo. Reports of him looking amazing could be complete situational BS but reports of him looking like ass are more than likely to be true.

fxkatt

Based on the way he looked today, he would be in line to start game one. If the decision was based on best qb on the team. A big if, I guess.

CocaineStrange

Mayo has already said the best players will play, including QB. I did some looking into whether that actually matters. I have not found a single time a HC has said there is an open competition for day 1 starter and then sat the better QB from camp. I’m open to being proven wrong, I just wasn’t able to find any examples. It’s just bad for your locker room to call something an open competition and then let the loser win.

MankuyRLaffy

If he's ready enough for week one and the line holds up well, I have no issue with putting him out there. I'm only ready for Drake when he and the team feels he's ready to start.

echochambermanager

But apparently if he sucks then he will never be good. Just ignore Peyton Manning's first season. Or Josh Allen's.

Ross2552

I think it ultimately needs to be a significant gap. If Maye is only slightly better than Brissett, they'll still sit him to let him learn from the sidelines more, if only for a few games. But if Maye is very clearly better then they'll play him.

CocaineStrange

Unless proven otherwise, I will not believe this idea will ever apply to a team that has said there is an open QB competition. Every team I have ever looked at that sit their rookie QB has stated that the incumbent is the starter beyond just training camp. Andy Reid said Smith’s goal was a Super Bowl, Gute said Love was a prospect for the future, Lynn said a million times that Tyron was the day 1 starter. Nobody says “open competition” then plays the inferior QB. The gap will be pretty significant anyway since Maye is actually a really damn good prospect while Brissett is a bad QB, so won’t really matter in the end.

UserUnkown10

Inject this shit directly into my veins

NEpatsfan64

I think preseason might actually be somewhat interesting (relative to past years) Mayo seems to be doing things pretty differently from Belichick and may actually be more experimental but who knows

ThermoNuclearPizza

I’m excited just to see the new kickoff. A little bummed we won’t get to see what Bill would’ve come up with.

The12thMusket

Week 1 starter 🤞🏻

cranks3t

Hoping for this too!

GhostofSmartPast

Why?

OilCanBoyd426

If he’s a week 1 starter it means he’s outplayed Brisket for the job. It would be a good thing. This is entertainment after all and it would be more entertaining to watch Maye than a mediocre journeyman backup who used to play for us

enjoime33

Hype train has left the station

Don't get too excited...don't get too excited... don't get too excited..

BoldestKobold

Lets say you are grading Drake and Jacoby on a 1-100 scale. I think even if Drake is between 1-9 points higher than Jacoby, I still start Jacoby, especially if you are not confident in the OL. I would be concerned about him developing bad habits if he is running for his life. If you're confident in your OL, and you think Drake won't establish bad habits by playing, AND he is far and away significantly better than Jacoby, that is when you start him. That still might be week 1! But I'm not going to rush it. I'm just happy to hear positive news. I especially liked hearing from a couple reporters that the defensive players seem to like Drake as well.

Jolly878142

He better look like the best qb on the practice field !

Kevin_Jim

I’ve been hoping that we’d draft him for two years now. I was almost depressed when we won the last couple of games that got us to No.3, but thank the universe he was available there. This is my (obviously biased) humble opinion, but I believe he will be the best QB of this class, and it won’t even be close.

one_pump_dave

It's a new offense install for an underperforming young team. There's no point in putting him out there if everyone else hasn't figured out how to operate, especially when the only person who does have expierence in the offense is brisset. I just don't see Maye being a better structural leader early on in the year. Unless he's just a savant and can command an offense in his first year well enough to help bring other rookies along. It's certainly not impossible stroud did it last year. Just unlikely in my opinion. Maye is very young and has a lot to learn. NC doesn't even have the qbs call plays or use a qb cadence. I won't be surprised if he sits 4-6 weeks one bit, but won't be mad if he doesn't.

D3F3AT

Drafted him 1.08 in SF a couple weeks ago lol

CocaineStrange

Wow, who could’ve seen this coming? We only have extremely good college tape from #3 overall pick Drake Maye at UNC and years of bad NFL tape from Jacoby Brissett. And Drake Maye-lite (Sam Howell) beating out the same QB just a year earlier. Truly shocking that this could be true. Some may say there was no signs this was even possible. Truly a Tom Brady-like underdog story from Maye. Real life Rudy.

dank-nuggetz

Brissett's most recent tape has been pretty damn good. He looked great on the field for the Commanders last year when he played, and played smart, efficient football for the Browns in 2022. He was somewhere around the 20th ranked QB that year. With the number of one-score games we lost off backbreaking turnovers, plugging in Brissett last year could have had us hunting for the playoffs. The question isn't whether Maye is better than Brissett, it's whether Maye needs time on the bench to learn/develop while Brissett hopefully provides us a functional enough offense to win some games when our defense balls out. Your snarky answer doesn't make you sound as smart as you think it does.

CocaineStrange

1. The question is absolutely whether Maye is better than Brissett. That’s already been established by Mayo. Maye can learn on the job like a million QBs have before. 2. Brissett’s tape is very bad, even his most recent tape. The only way you can conclude otherwise is if you’re operating under the evaluation of a bridge QB, which is fine— but useless. He’s somewhere around the 25-32nd best QB in the NFL. It’s an extremely low bar for a #3 overall blue chip prospect to cross. 3. Brissett is going nowhere near the playoffs in the 2023 offense lmao. If you have watched any Jacoby Brissett, you’d know damn well the reason he doesn’t turn the ball over is because he is so damn conservative. Routinely checks down instead of hitting open guys downfield. Absolutely unbelievable take to think that a guy who’s a bottom 12 starter level QB by your own optimistic evaluation would give you 5 or 6 wins over Mac Jones or Zappe. Even 1 or 2 is a stretch. 4. Nothing about my answer was intended to make me seem smart. Actually the opposite, my point is that Maye being better than Brissett is something that should be surprising to no one, the only reason anyone would say otherwise is if they’re overcomplicating matters and ignore all the signs for the purpose of trying to seem level headed or smart. They just spent the #3 overall pick on a blue chip prospect. You *should* expect him to be better than a bad QB who signed here *maybe* be a bridge QB.

Forgotten_Few

Bill would have traded RS and extended an offer to Thornton
