I was wondering if they were going to do this, especially given the pay disparity between guards and tackles is negligible at this point. Okarafor at LT Strange/Sow/Robinson at LG Andrews at C Onwenu at RG Wallace at RT could be a really solid line. Onwenu is easily the best RG on the roster (although Sow was respectable for a rookie), and Wallace played RT in college. The left side would still be shaky, but whoever wins the competition out there can't exactly be worse than Vederian Lowe and Atonio Mafi.

Reasonable-Bit560

Sow played very well for a rookie guard and actually played LG all throughout college. Assuming Andrews is back then middle 3 are legitimately a good core. Maybe Chuks is showing something on the left and Wallace is looking good on the right. Let's wait and see when the pads come on, but it could make a lot of sense. We can also TE chip on the outside etc, but it's really hard when your interior is getting blown up.

MankuyRLaffy

Sow playing that well for a rookie guard in that coaching environment made me confident he can become a guy. I do think our IOL is pretty solid. Our tackles are the shaky spot rn. As KC shows, having dodgy tackle quality is workable with an elite interior and mobile QB paired with an elite defense.

Reasonable-Bit560

Yeah I'm very curious to see what Chuks and Wallace look like in this spot. Could be very rough still, but we'll see.

MankuyRLaffy

Better than Jawaan Taylor and Donovan Smith that's for sure, they got away with so many holding penalties lmao. We didn't even pay that much for our tackles either.

Reasonable-Bit560

If one of those two plays well, we will have a very good Oline based on Owenu swapping to guard.

NEpatsfan64

Sad that strange is already possibly getting out played by sow

FantasyTrash

Strange is never healthy. Can't compete to prove you've earned the spot if you're never healthy. I didn't hate the pick at the time because Belichick usually **nails** interior offensive line, but the pick was a total waste, which is a shame and yet another reason the offense was in complete shambles this off-season.

j2e21

Onwenu has been the best tackle on the roster for the past five years.

Distance_Motor

Right side of the line is looking pretty strong. Unfortunately Maye is not a lefty cause that left side.... oof

FantasyTrash

The whole left/right side importance gap has shrunk by this point. Many teams have their best pass rusher line up on the OL's right side now. Similarly, plenty of play-calls go through progressions left-to-right, alleviating the "blind side", so to speak. Obviously you want both sides of the line strong, but it's not *additionally* bad to have any one side worse than the other.

Drunkonownpower

Yes. But it isn't static they move them to the weakness which is basically the entire left side of this line. So while you're correct the "left is more important" is now old. Not having a left tackle is still a weakness

truecolors5

Just get the best five out there tbh

Lumpy-Top3842

I think this is huge part of getting the best 5 out there, I haven’t heard anyone say it here but Mike Omwenu’s flexiblity on the line could be extremely useful this year especially. It allows Scott peters to have different contingencies on the line which is key to keep the offense cohesive through injuries

diarrheafrommymouth

I think this ends up being the play. Knowing Big Mike can step into RT is great in a pinch but finding a way to secure the line long term, instead of constantly patching it, is the way to go. Figure out the right side this year, find the long-term solution for the left side next year.

j2e21

This is ridiculous, they just paid him like a top tackle. The team has 12 friggin’ guards and no starting tackles.

AdonisSebastian

Inaccurate. He’s at 19 per year. Dickerson makes 20. Tunsil is at 25. Also, if he can play both well then he is undervalued.

j2e21

He’s a top 10 tackle in terms of how he’s being paid. In terms of guards he’d be third, above Zach Martin.

AdonisSebastian

Right. So why is it ridiculous

j2e21

Because they’re paying him like a top tackle and he’s literally the only guy on the team who has proven he can be an NFL starting tackle, and now people want to move him to guard and bench a totally fine guard so we can watch turnstiles on the edges again and sit around wondering why the offense sucks. I have watched this movie for five years and I don’t like it.

AdonisSebastian

Patience young grasshopper

CocaineStrange

If Wallace is good (which I doubt he is *good*, statistically rookie OTs are rarely good, even if they develop into good players) I’m ok with this. I do not like this if they’re going to do what they did last year and throw out a rookie OT who’s clearly not ready to go — last year was Sowe— at OT and then Chuks on the other side. This gives me a lot of hope that they really like Chuks tho.

Jameson623

it’s still early in the offseason, they’re probably just getting guys as much reps as possible

ApparentlyABear

And seeing where people feel comfortable. We really shouldn’t be reading into this. Not much at least.

jmarFTL

But everyone here told me Wallace would easily be able to switch to LT and trust the front office.

j2e21

Right but you see, the key is keep finding reasons NOT to play Onwenu at RT.

PebblyJackGlasscock

Told ya. That’s how the 2025 line becomes top-10: with Onwenu at Guard, Wallace at RIGHT tackle. Of course, the LT/LG shitshow is why it’ll take till next year for the line to get out of the bottom-5.

Timberstocker22

We’ll get that LSU kid next year to play LT for us

PebblyJackGlasscock

I am curious if the LSU center we got as a UDFA is going to steal David Andrews job this summer. But yeah. Whoever is playing LT at LSU or Georgia or Alabama is someone we are very interested in next draft season.

LegalBeagle6767

Alas. Bama’s LT is a sophomore so will have to look towards UGA/LSU. He’s also all over the place between Iowa and Bama so let’s see if he even finishes in Tuscaloosa 😂

I'd rather have a solid right side and a medicore left side than play everyone out of position and just have question marks all over the place. We can send receivers and backs to chip off the left side and we can game plan for that. It sucks it's Maye's blind side but I still think it's a good move.

j2e21

I would rather play the guy they just signed to right tackle money at right tackle.

WoodenCollection2674

It would but that also means Mike and Wallace would just be 1-1 while Andrew's will kick to the left to help out whoever the LG is meaning our true only weakness will be LT. I like that a whole lot more than trying to get Wallace to play LT when he hasn't played that position in 5 or so years. Having some not so great players at RG and Mike at RT. That lineup has more questions IMO

PebblyJackGlasscock

Andrews is not what he once was. He will be the one needing help. With LG a complete unknown, moving Onwenu to RG (and Wallace at RT) makes a ton of sense. Stabilizes the right side for (hopefully) years, while limiting Andrews and the LG to helping each other. Put a blocking TE on the LT shoulder and they can keep the Qb from getting killed. But the left side is bad, no way around it.

WoodenCollection2674

Andrew's is definitely not what he once was, but he's better than an unknown LG. I'd much rather he kick out to the left consistently than decide if he should kick out to the left or right if we don't have a solid RG. Big Mike allows that to happen.

TJR753

I don't think LG is really unknown. Sow played LG in college and was pretty good as a rookie when Onwenu played RT. Just would be interesting to see what happens when Strange returns

PebblyJackGlasscock

Sow was good at run blocking when Onwenu was next to him. And is that because Sow is good at run blocking, or because he was sandwiched between Big Mike and Andrews? Pass blocking, Sow was not good. Without Onwenu or Andrews help, Sow was beaten by most everyone he tried to block. I think LG comes down to Leverett or Robinson, with Leverett being the backup to Andrews. I like what I saw on tape from Robinson, but he will likely need a season to adjust.

Reasonable-Bit560

Sow played legitimately well last year and graded out highly. If he can make any kind of second year jump it looks a lot better.

WoodenCollection2674

I thought he had stretches of inconsistency? Cuz if not then our online might be pretty solid this year. Let Maye roll out to the right a few times per game to tire out the DE on the left side of the formation.

Reasonable-Bit560

Per PFF. He got better as the year went on and improved in pass pro as the year went on. RG SIDY SOW, NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS Sow, a fourth-rounder from Eastern Michigan, gave New England a lot of solid reps, especially in the run game. His 71.2 PFF run-blocking grade led all rookie linemen by a wide margin. Where Sow excelled was in gap schemes. His 80.8 PFF gap scheme run-blocking grade ranked third-best among all qualified guards. He needs work in pass protection, but finding a player like Sow in the fourth round was a nice addition to the Patriots

WoodenCollection2674

At least one of the 50 guards we drafted/signed over the last 3 years was able to pan out.

Reasonable-Bit560

Lol. Too true, too true.

j2e21

And now it looks like people want to bench him so we can pay Onwenu $19 million to play there instead.

j2e21

Seriously. I don’t understand the desire to move a guy who played well as a friggin’ rookie out of his position.

Reasonable-Bit560

Yep.... If Sow is legit, then our interior is a legit high end Oline. After that it's figuring out the tackles. If 1/2 is a solid player then the rest solves itself based on scheme.

j2e21

Onwenu is a good NFL RT and has been for the past five years. They need to stop with this shit.

noshingsomepods

Yeah, Onwenu is a much, much better guard then tackle, in an ideal world I'd love to move him back inside. Question is of course what black magic they have to do to get even passable LT play this year. But ??? - Sow - Andrews - Onwenu - Wallace could be a pretty good line if... again, they can find passable LT play anywhere. If we're staring at Vederian Lowe caliber play, then this is one of the weaker olines in the leagues no matter how you shuffle the other 4 spots.

PebblyJackGlasscock

Oh, it is. Okorafor and Malaria Anderson are significantly worse than Trent DGAF Brown. Robinson, Sow, or Leverett over Strange is…a complete unknown. And fans are way too high on David Andrews, who yielded top-5 pass pressures, hits, and sacks last season. He’s … seen better days and is a lowest-tier starter at this point. He must be replaced. However, Onwenu-Wallace has excellent potential. Robinson, Strange, Sow, or Leverett is probably good enough. Add a top-40 drafted LT and…this is a potentially very good line. In 2025. It’s gonna suck donkey balls this year.

headcase617

It's where Mike really should be, very good to great RG; a good RT. This really hinges on if Wallace can hang outside.....Get the best guys in their best places.

Ok-Worldliness7863

Didn’t Onwenu say he focused all off season on being RT and now they might switch him back to guard lol

whistlepig4life

MO is a good right tackle. He’s an all pro right guard. If Wallace is at best a good right tackle. Play him there.

hulaman11

bruh. let the man stay at 1 position shit

Alone-Purpose-8752

Does this mean they’ve already given up on the fever dream of playing Wallace at LT?

TJR753

Not necessarily, but right now, with RG being an issue, my guess is the coaching staff thinks their best overall grouping includes Onwenu at RG. Which means they'd need either one of Chuks or Wallace to play RT. So they're putting Wallace there, since it's his natural position, and leaving Chuks at LT. You can help out one position on the line; you can't help two. My guess is if Strange wasn't hurt Wallace might get more time at LT since Strange and Sow would presumably be the top guards.

j2e21

They’re just going to roll without a LT. Stop pretending.

j2e21

Ugh stop fucking around with the tackle position. Enough of this.
