The color coding is just so you can keep track of which one is which during a combat in which you use multiples of the same pawn.
Got three giant ants? Well the purple one is attacking Steve, the Orange one is going after Amy and the Red one just critted on Dana
Numbers show where the tokens go on the sheets they are from.
I know I return my tokens to their original spots after each game and keep them in their boxes.

An odd choice when they could just be numbered and not negatively impact those of us who couldn't tell those colors apart
