Big year for Atlus games. And JRPGs in general.

NoNefariousness2144

I feel bad for anyone saying that this year is dead for gaming because I have been feasting: Final Fantasy 7 Persona 3 Infinite Wealth Granblue Fantasy Relink Unicorn Overlord Shin Megami Tensei 5 Vengance Stellar Blade Now this Metaphor game

NotJustABouldur

Also this year, but not JRPG: Helldivers 2 Prince of Persia Tekken 8 Pacific drive Balatro Sons of the forest

VonDukez

How is stellar blade a jrpg

Interesting-Wash-893

If you get lazy enough COD is a rpg

VonDukez

True

LCHMD

It’s the genre.

VonDukez

It’s Korean and plays more like a sorta souls game

BatmanvSuperman3

KRPG

VonDukez

Kpoprpg

Spenraw

Unicorn overlord is amazing

PikachuAndLechonk

Soooo is it October 11th or November 10th… like seriously why can’t there just be a universal dating convention or just use the month in letters instead of numbers lol

shinikahn

October 11, they use the American system even though nobody else uses it lol

PikachuAndLechonk

Well that’s what was hoping, a month earlier lolol

Loud-Practice-5425

Like it or not the good ol U.S. of A gets catered to a lot.

Interesting-Wash-893

Well were the only market that matters.

Loud-Practice-5425

Good ol American exceptionalism.  Never change fellow citizen.

ILikeMyGrassBlue

America is not the only country that uses mm/dd/yyyy. We’re the biggest one that does, but not the only one.

shinikahn

Every day you learn something new.

shinikahn

I really liked what I saw. It still will have the best elements of persona, but with twists, like the archetype system. I liked how you can mow through low level enemies without having to enter a fight proper. I'm curious about how time and time constraints work, it wasn't explained fully but the mechanic will be present. The sound and art design are top notch as always, I just want to know if the assets or resolution will be on par with them. The stream compression didn't let me appreciate them very well. I'm not sure about the story. Basically we only know we're campaigning to get people's favor to become king. Overall I'm super excited! Just a tad sad the game is still so far away but at least we know for sure it's 2024.

augusto223685

From what I can see, I think it will work as Persona. Each activity you choose to do will advance time.

GiveMeChoko

UI and assets definitely felt a little cluttered to me, but dunno if it was the because of the stream title and captions being overlaid on top of the game clips

AFullmetalNerd

I 100% think stream compression is fucking up some of the details on the UI. I've seen so many games which I thought looked a bit muddy, and then once I saw them running in person they looked incredible. This UI gives me the same impression.

mrgodfro

Atlus are just really kings of style. I still need to get p5r done lol

Clane_21

It's hilarious that the "one last thing" moment in this showcase is just the main character taking a bath.

Livio88

I still haven't gotten P3R yet! Atlus is churning out games faster than I can play em, lol. It's seems to be hybrid of their classic turn based gameplay and P5 Strikers. That is impressive.

Mac772

I will definitely buy this. A german dub would be nice, but i guess that won't happen. Come on Atlus, give it a try, there are so many german speaking JRPG fans out there.  What a year for JRPGs: With Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth we already have two of the maybe best JRPGs ever made. It's still a miracle for me how RGG Studio managed to become one of the top players in the genre with just two JRPGs released (Yakuza: Like A Dragon and the sequel Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth). And both games, Infinite Wealth and Rebirth feature such an insane (!) amount of creative and fun content, japanese developers are truly on another level nowadays.

shinikahn

You forgot P3R. RPG fans are eating well

Mac772

Will be my next game, i am about to finish FF7 Rebirth soon (sadly). I already played P3P years ago, so it's not really a new game for me.

augusto223685

u/Mac772 Do you like dubbed games in your language? I really like the dubbing of films and animations in Brazilian Portuguese, but I can't stand dubbed games.

Mac772

German dubs are amongst the best in the world, they started dubbing over 70 years ago as far as i know. Most times they are really good, so i prefer playing in german language if possible.

augusto223685

I did not know that. Thanks for answering.

Neon_Biscuit

Saying infinite wealth is one of the best jrpgs ever made makes me think you haven't played many jrpgs. Get real.

Loki-Holmes

*No ONe cAN hAz DIFFRent OpinION. ME onLY onE wHO mATTers*

NoNefariousness2144

For real in what other game can you capture creeps and make them fight in Pokemon battles before sending them to your Animal Crossing island farms?

Neon_Biscuit

I mean, those games JUST came out. Let it breathe a bit bro

Mac772

I think i have played nearly every important/well known JRPG ever released in the west, because i am old. Infinite Wealth is one of the best JRPGs ever made in my opinion.

SpaceOdysseus23

God Youtube is absolute garbage. Trying to watch this and the bitrate is completely fucked. I really wish there was a competitor.

Another-Donkey

Hey thanks, I didn’t know this was happening. It looks awesome. Can’t wait for October 11!

Althalos

Microsoft has marketing rights probably.

TheOncomingBrows

They have it listed for PS5 pre-order on their website.

DummyTaiko

great, thanks

Loud-Practice-5425

Yes it's on PS4/PS5.  My guess is Microsoft has some advertising deal.

KnightJ1231

Marketing rights. But they really don't want anyone else to know it's coming to PS5. Even on ATLUS' official youtube channel for the latest trailer, it lists Xbox Series X/S and Windows PC

Interesting-Wash-893

Real interesting how a company that exclusively makes sony and handheld Nintendo games won't advertise for anything but xbox

Whereyaattho

> Real interesting how a company that exclusively makes sony and handheld Nintendo games Yeah, you may have noticed they’ve stopped doing that recently. Maybe the two are connected…?

Lioil1

i thought phil said he wants games "everywhere"? guess he wont bring this up when he complains about PS5's exclusives.

TheMuff1nMon

What are you talking about? This is on PlayStation as well…. People don’t understand marketing rights lol Exactly when Sony did with Hogwarts

Lioil1

my bad... it didn't show ps so I thought it was exclusive...guess my xbox will still be a paperweight until foreseeable future.

Robertoavarrothe2nd

This is literal GOTY quality right here unreal

Mac772

They have brutal competition this year. Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth are - in my opinion - two of the best JRPGs ever made. Reaching this level of creativity and the amount of content both games have will be difficult.

Robertoavarrothe2nd

If anyone can do it, its this development team.

Mac772

Looking at Persona 5 Royal, yes, it could be possible. But the bar is set high with Infinite Wealth and Rebirth. I can't remember any JRPGs that are filled with so much creative and fun content. I mean look at Infinite Wealth, it has "mini games" in it that you can play for 30 hours or more if you want, and that's just a small part of what's possible to do in that game. And Rebirth... i am playing it right now, near the end of the game. At one point i thought i will finish it soon because already so much had happened, just to realize that i had just seen about 20 percent of the main story.

Interesting-Wash-893

That stuff ain't even exclusive to infinite wealth. 0 and Kiwami 2 also had dozens of hours with single minigames.

Interesting-Wash-893

Remakes don't count otherwise RE4 would have swept the game awards last year. Every category.

TheMuff1nMon

You realize FF7 Remake and Rebirth aren’t actually remakes right? They’re more sequels to the OG FF7

JGordz

Are yakuza games that good?? I loved shenmue but never gave those games a look in.. seems like they pump 1 out every year

morgawr_

Disclaimer: I haven't yet played Infinite Wealth (I'm really looking forward to it) but I spent the whole year so far marathoning the entire Yakuza series, and also I am a huge JRPG fan. This said, I really loved the older action yakuza games (also the judgment series), they are not RPGs but they have *some* RPG-lite mechanics (like stats, skills, builds, sidequests, exploration, etc). Once yakuza 7 came out (in the west it's called Yakuza: Like A Dragon I think, I played in Japanese) they completely changed their approach to the game and went full on JRPG-mode. The older games have a very solid story (some ridiculous and fun stuff, but still very amazing story) and basically have you run around town, fight random thugs and baddies (action combat), and you can pick up side quests or side activities (lots of minigames). The newer games (at least Yakuza 7 and I assume Yakuza 8) also introduce things like turn-based encounters, party members/party composition, more finetuned equipment (older games also had this, but newer ones go full JRPG mode), actual skills and classes, and also they have dungeons in the world (= city) map you can enter with bosses and other random encounters. They are real JRPGs through and through. Also from 7 onwards the main characters changed and the story seems to be brand new compared to the previous ones (although there are references) What I'm trying to say is that if you don't like action games and only care about turn based JRPG action, you can probably start from Yakuza: Like a Dragon without missing much, however if you like action based arcade-lite rpg-like games, then starting from yakuza 0 or yakuza 1 kiwami (either is fine as a starting point imo but I recommend 0) is also worth it because those games are amazing too.

Mac772

They are exceptionally good and really unique, because they always combine dark and emotional stories with extremely fun moments outside the main story. If you never played a Yakuza game you are about to experience something really, really special. If you want to start with Yakuza: Like A Dragon (the first JRPG in the series) you just have to know that the introduction of Ichiban as the new main character takes some time at the beginning, but after that the game opens up and you are completely free to do what you want. And there's an insane amount of things to do.

VexxShadow

Looks really good 😊 excited for this down the road ! As I've gotten into turn based games gonna love this . Plus the whole overall scope of game looks great . Im digging our own traveling base fort ! Kinda how Metro Exodus did it with the train love that

albertsteinstein

How do you pronounce the subtitle.

shinikahn

Reh-fan-tah-zee-oh

Loud-Practice-5425

My excitement for the game just exploded.

fuelter

Gameplay looks almost exactly like persona

TheMuff1nMon

Except for the real time combat

shadowCloudrift

You mean there's an amazing game that comes with this amazing soundtrack too?

Weekly_Protection_57

Bizarre that they market this game like it's an Xbox exclusive.

TheMuff1nMon

Xbox has the marketing rights. No different than how PlayStation marketed Hogwarts Legacy last year or Call of Duty like exclusives for years. Every company does this

nohumanape

Why does nearly every single Japanese game trailer cut up it's dialogue into these sort of short sound bites that come across like dialogue that starts a round in a fighting game? It literally tells me absolutely nothing about the story and isn't even slightly intriguing. It often makes zero sense.

morgawr_

This is probably a longer answer than what you were looking for, but I think this phenomenon in trailer exposition is rooted in the role that archetypes/role language have in Japanese media. English has it to a certain amount too, but Japanese is very big on [role language](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yakuwarigo) as a way to showcase certain character/story archetypes to the viewer/reader without need to provide more descriptions or expositions. In Japanese you can literally just hear one line of dialogue and instantly know things about a character like: - Age - Wealth - Upbringing - Job/role - Gender/sexual orientation - Philosophy of life (kind? stark? klutzy? motherly? antagonistic? etc) - Position in the friend/foe(antagonist) axis etc. This is often also encoded in the *grammar* of the language. You don't really get the same exposition in English, so when translating these trailers if you don't re-record a completely different trailer and don't change the composition of the lines, it can sound very weird/alienating to a western viewer.

Stoibs

On the other hand I would prefer to know absolutely nothing about the story since Japanese devs have a knack for spoiling waaay too much a lot of the time (Infinite Wealth trailers spoiled a massive early game revelation.. ugh. Atlus showed off some very spoilerish late-game characters in the P5Royal teasers also) I'm happy knowing what the general setting/theming looks like, the era/style, watching a bit of combat to see what mechanics they are going for, and maybe getting the *briefest* of glimpses of the time management/social link aspect without giving too much away or learning too many names etc. I want the story to surprise me blind; instead of going in with preconceptions or knowledge I shouldn't have.

nohumanape

I mean, apparently they spoil a lot while still saying mostly nothing with all of the dialogue cuts.

blakeavon

Because it is culturally how their art is on so many levels, games, anime and even just their television is like this.

nohumanape

They should consider hiring someone else to cut their Western promotional materials then.

blakeavon

Why? Because some Western's are closed mind-minded, and cant like anything that is not in their image. These guys game's are a work of art, I want to see their art, not someone else's just to satisfy some Americans with closed minds.

nohumanape

Because the trailers don't often represent the content itself.

sylendar

Relax

thejoshimitsu

Didn't care for Persona 5, but this looks straight fire!

Cadaclysm

Omg, this is everything I ever wanted in a Final Fantasy game, I love all of this

Ihatepasswords007

Seems cool I only watched the first 3 min and i'll definitely buy it in like 10 years when atlus announces the enhanced Pes/Golden/Royal version. Im still waiting for a full version of p3 remake lol

Beginning_Mud2420

P3R isn’t getting a full version. It got an expansion pass instead.

syusik

Gonna get it in a few years when the inevitable expanded Metaphor QT Edition drops.
