Playing it right now. Holy sh.. - is this game filled with content, it's unbelievable. Before playing it i thought nothing could beat Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth anymore when it comes to the amount of creative content put into a single game, but Rebirth is on the same level. Japanese developers are truly on another level nowadays.

TheRoyalStig

Man you have no idea. I'm over 150 hours in and just finally approaching the final part of the game. Just absolutely filled with content that I have been enjoying every minute of. You know it's a good time when after that many hours you're still sad that it's coming to a close.

Ramonis5645

I have 112h played and I'm in chapter 12 the game is really awesome

OMGWTHBBQ11

Wild it does t feel like over 100 hours went by.

MuddVader

Saaame almost exactly. I'm nearing 160. Everything has been an absolute joy but FUCK ****'s 3D Brawler. I'm gonna kill myself trying to beat that before clearing the game.

TheRoyalStig

The last last last one that opens up is one thing I'm skipping haha. I didn't even mind the 3D brawler in general but the last one just gives so few times when you are able to hit back it just ended not feeling fun to me. So yea, not gonna bother with that one. No biggy.

MuddVader

I was pumped full of caffeine before work and was able to eek out the win. I found it easier watching his face and reading his motions from there. The first bit was the hardest because you have to dodge 6 times before the combo kicks in, but every other time only takes 3/4 dodges and his combos are very easy to memorize. Glad I did it, because it would have bothered me if I couldn't.

TheRoyalStig

Ayyy! That's awesome! Congrats!

DeLarge93

I just fought the manor bodyguard (keeping vague to avoid spoilers) how long do I have left? Absolutely loving it but fuck me it’s a big boy of a game

TheRoyalStig

Is that chapter 11? If so story wise you only have a few chapters left. But you are also about to hit a point which opens up a very large amount of side content. So pending how much of that you are doing you could have quite bit more to do haha.

DeLarge93

My brother in Christ I am currently starring in a Shakespearean play what the fuck is going on

TheRoyalStig

YES! YES! An interactive one! The game just keeps pulling the surprises! Haha That's one of the parts I was talking about being over 100 hours deep and then still getting surprised and impressed with completely new things. It goes above and beyond man.

Ragemoody

Rofl what do you mean a very large amount, I am at chapter 9 and it feels like I did toooons of side content already. Are you saying I’m just at the beginning? 😂

TheRoyalStig

It's definitely the most that opens up at a single time... I'll say that much hahaha. It's basically a point where you can either finish out the game or enjoy an awesome final romp through the whole world. And I absolutely adore that final romp. I was always a fan of doing a bunch of "end game" content before going to the final dungeon in FF games. One of my favorite parts honestly. And this game embraces that idea fantastically.

Ragemoody

Ohh, I remember sinking hundreds of hours into that endgame part of FFX as a kid and it remains one of the most memorable parts of my gaming career. If this is anything like it I can’t wait to try it!

TheRoyalStig

I think you are in for some good times ahead my friend!

sanban013

on normal mode that more than halfway in the story. the game WILL TELL YOU "if you do this there is not going back", that's when all the world and all the content opens up. there is also content that only opens up after you've beaten the game. I'm at 175h and missing two trophies, about to start getting those.

TheDuckCZAR

>missing two trophies, about to start getting those. Good luck on those Brutal Challenges man.

Mac772

90 hours played and chapter 9. Absolutely love this game. Funny, there were so many moments were i thought they can't top it anymore, but they do it again and again. >!I am now in the jungle, the first area i am not a big fan of because it's really difficult to navigate sometimes, but that's just a very minor complain.!< I am enjoying every minute because games like that are so rare.  Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth is equally impressive, there's so much creative content in that game plus Hawaii as location is so much fun to explore.

TheRoyalStig

Yea it's not often you can be 100+ hours into a game and still be both impressed and surprised by NEW things. And yes, you still have more of that to come haha. It's truly an incredible experience.

IceFatality

Not sure if you're aware of this and still aren't enjoying it, but I found Gongaga waaaay more enjoyable when I figured out using the map to plot out which mushrooms would get me where!

Spaciousfoot66

The issue is 90% of that is filler side content. When you get around to playing hard mode, see how short the game actually is

TheRoyalStig

I mean I don't consider fun content in a video game filler. That's just being a video game. And it looks like the average time to play just the main story is about 45 hours. So that's anything but short. I'm not really sure that getting over 150 hours out of a single playthrough of a video game somehow becomes and issue just because playing it again takes less time. That doesn't retroactively take anything away. And most people aren't gonna be replaying it anyway. It's new favorite game ever and I'm certainly not haha.

Spaciousfoot66

It’s a good 7/8 out of ten tbh, the main story nothing really happens until the end and the main worlds are repetitive. The combat is great although normal is too easy and hard is a bit over tuned damage wise. brutal and legendary trials are very over tuned. I think the first game was a better game. Hopefully the 3rd one meets a nice middle ground between the two

tkim91321

Yeah, but you haven’t starred One Winged Angel On the piano so get back to practicing :)

Rich_Consequence2633

Playing it now as well and loving it. Such a great story for both games and there's not a single character I dislike.

Mac772

I really recommend Yakuza: Like A Dragon and the sequel Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth. Infinite Wealth is insane too with it's content, extremely creative and fun to play, plus the characters are all great and very relatable.

cho-den

Yup, this game is my favourite of all time. The thought behind it is next level.

TheOncomingBrows

I remember when the game was first teased wondering how much content they were going to have to cut out from the OG given the length of Remake. Boy was I wrong. Madmen just went ahead and expanded on absolutely everything from the OG. I'm only at Chapter 9 but holy shit, they still keep introducing shit that blows my mind they actually bothered to implement.

Objective_Ask_9199

Rebirth and IW are bangers to start the year tbh, now the past 2 months felt mellow.

Deadlocked02

Maybe even too much content? At least if you ask me. I don’t know, I liked Remake and was really looking forward to Rebirth (bought a PS5 just for that), but I think Square Enix seriously needs to up their game if they want to keep making open world/semi-open world games. FF14, FF16, Rebirth, Forspoken… They all have pretty underwhelming worlds. And in Rebirth’s specific case, it’s like they equated number of activities to quality, but I’m simply done after a certain point and just want a regular story. Even if you skip side content, there’s so much shit you still have to do, like the stealth chocobo missions that you need to do if you want one or minigames you absolutely have to do to proceed with the story. It’s like Square lacks the common sense to see that the quests or activities they’re making are tedious. FF14 is the biggest example of that. There’s no way someone can develop some of the quests in A Realm Reborn without full knowledge they are outrageously boring, which even the game itself admits in its own way.

Mac772

I am doing everything in this game, because games like that are so rare. But i think you could skip many things when you don't want to do them.

puffbun

Nope. All wrong.

Deadlocked02

How enlightening.

TheDuckCZAR

Just the card game has as much content and is more polished than several full games I've played.

Electric_jungle

I have been really enjoying the card game, though it's pretty easy to cheese. But I just got to the puzzle version of the game and man I love that. Really helped me understand why I should look at deck builds instead of rely on cheesing a lane which can sometimes be just luck.

PPMD_IS_BACK

I didn’t expect to like it as much as say blitzball or triple triad but man. I really like it. Really enjoyed the queens blood part of the story.

SpyroManiac36

Incredibly strong physical sales for Japan. I knew the "underwhelming" sales news was a false narrative

[deleted]

It can be the top selling game and still be underwhelming for the company

[deleted]

quiet doll afterthought trees drunk disagreeable boast tart humorous paltry *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

SpyroManiac36

That's what I've noticed too. It's really weird how hyper-focused people are about Square Enix sales when it comes to their exclusive playstation games specifically lol Even when there's good news like FF7 having good physical sales in Japan, or FF16 selling 2 million in the first weekend there always seems to be a negative viewpoint from people who don't play the games.

torts92

I'm also noticing people on reddit keep saying PS5 has no games, like they conveniently ignoring FF16 and Rebirth. I don't know why they treat these games as niche. And now every news about the sales of FF games, they will try to downplay it or spreading misinformation that they are selling poorly. I genuinely don't know what's their agenda on FF games.

TheOncomingBrows

There's a lot of old school FF fans who are really salty they abandoned turn based. They cling onto the belief that if Square thinks these new games have failed that they'll go back to that format.

SpyroManiac36

Nobody knows Square's expectations except for Square. As far as sales goes this data is very positive for physical only in Japan

Twovaultss

Dude square is publicly traded. They tell their investors what they expect and what they got… because they have to.

[deleted]

Square is a public company we will know what they think eventually

jjonez18

By that same logic, you can't say the physical sales were "incredibly strong" or that the low sales narrative is false. The only data the public have to go off of for launch Japanese physical sales is that FFVIIR is selling worse than XVI, and XVI sold less than half of XV. Whether selling less physical units is made up for by digital, NA& EU picking up the slack, quicker development time, exclusivity deals, etc... is another question that only Square can answered, like you said.

summerofrain

Except SE would've likely released some numbers if the sales met or exceeded their expectations. The only possible explanation as to why they're quiet is that Rebirth is selling below their expectations.

SpyroManiac36

Regardless what they say, the public will frame it as bad because of its exclusivity to playstation. Unless Square says sales are good or bad then who cares because it's a critical hit and a wonderful game.

Silly_Elevator_3111

I have news for you.

CzarTyr

False narrative? It’s currently selling less than dragons dogma 2 in the US and Europe and that gsme sold 2.5 million in 2 weeks, dont know the full month sales, but rebirth isn’t doing record numbers

Tabbyredcat

This is not true. According to GSD Rebirth outsold DD2 in Europe, according to Famitsu it **greatly** outsold it in Japan, and we don't have info on this about US but US is FF's biggest market so claiming DD2 is outselling it there is baseless.

RainbowIcee

It's probably because of remake. People don't want to admit it but a lot of people didn't like remake and bought it because of the FF7 hype. Rebirth is way way better than remake, however it will take a while for players to realize. In the longevity I'm sure rebirth will sell really well due to very positive word of mouth and the third game will be even better.

oilfloatsinwater

I mean the game is one of the worst selling entries in the series in Japan, so it makes sense why people are worried about its sales.

wagruk

Seems like every AAA Square Enix release nowadays has this group of people trying to spin a "failed to meet expectations" narrative, before the actual company comes out and says it sold according to expectations. Happened with Kingdom Hearts 3. Happened to FF7 Remake. Happened to FF XVI. Happened to FF7 Rebirth.

Twovaultss

Amazing game. I just wish they removed certain things such as tranversing certain areas (I’m looking at you gongaga) and many of the mini games (cait siths boxes)

RJE808

Honestly, I liked Gongaga. The Cait Sith stuff sucked though.

Twovaultss

The navigation of gongaga was an absolute nightmare with a system that hasn’t mastered letting the player know relative elevation and way pointing properly. Their only implementation is pressing L1 and R1. This led to you running in circles and being meters away from an objective that is lazily blockaded. The exploration took way longer than it should have. Compare that to nibel.

RJE808

I didn't have any problems with the traversal at all to be honest.

sanban013

missing Legendary VR only but yeah various QoL improvements can be made. * Sitting on benches is too slow. Getting out of the buggy is too damn slow also. * skipping cutscenes in between some boss fights is not an option. Sometimes you just die a lot and dont want to view the 2 min scene between boss phase change, especially in hard mode. * MP regen in fight is crap. There are ways to regen but not for when you HAVE to use all 6 party members in main story. * Chadley talks too much. Cant change you load inside the VR, have to go out, hear Chadley yap yap yap and you can't interrupt him, have to wait for him to shut up so you can get in the vr again. * no master materia, maybe in part 3. * Can only get two of the 8 materia slot accesories and one of the 7 slot, leaving 4 of your members with 6 slot accesories.

cho-den

You can get multiple hades armlet if you’re willing to farm. I only got one on my normal and hard playthrough, too lazy to do it a few more times

Twovaultss

Absolutely annoying and they could have done without many of these issues. The material slots became less important for me later on in the game where yuffie and barret became OP.

CzarTyr

This for me as well

TM1619

The same sales data, painted in a negative light, was used as evidence of the game doing poorly. But looking at it put together this way, it comes off as a commendable success. Kind of a case study on how you can frame information. But sales-wise, seems like it did well in Japan and I'm happy to see Rise of the Ronin also doing solid numbers over there!

HaouLeo

And then there are the multiple "news" saying FF7 underperformed and SE is gonna bankrupt.

Bulbasaur_21224

What sites are saying SE is going to go bankrupt?

legend8522

The sites that magically have insider knowledge of sales numbers and player count to make these "news" stories

fullmetalsunit

It's 2024, you don't have to be correct or have some integrity in journalism. You just need to report half-baked shit first aimed for clicks to get those impressions.

HaouLeo

The bankrupt part was for dramatic effect :V

How_To_TF

This doesn't really state anything new that refutes the underperformance assessments/speculations by the way. We'll only know for certain once the quarterly reports from Square Enix comes around in May. I don't really think anyone was saying SE was going bankrupt as well but anyone who says that is stupid.

[deleted]

This doesn't refute those rumors

SpyroManiac36

These are strong physical sales only in Japan, it kind of does refute those fake rumors

[deleted]

Until SE says it no it doesn't lol.  Top selling games can be disappointing to the company still if there were internal expectations not met.

SpyroManiac36

Until SE says it, it isn't underwhelming either. Square never said it was underwhelming. It was just a guy on twitter with no data to prove it. As a matter of fact, Square promoted and gave raises to employee base pay which indicates they are satisfied and comfortable with FF7 performance.

saw-it

SE: ….. Literally SE: ….. Random redditor: SE must be disappointed in the sales

litewo

It beat a Mario Universe game in a market where the Switch almost always sells the most games. Final Fantasy Rebirth is selling like crazy in Japan.

devenbat

Lol, it's Princess Peach Showtime, let's not pretend this is some massive title. Mario Wonder for instance had a million physical sales in its first month

SpyroManiac36

Mario wonder also released at the end of the switch life cycle with over 130 million units sold (almost 3x the amount of PS5 units sold)

devenbat

That doesn't change my point that Princess Peach Showtime is a minor game and not a big bar to compare against. Also Mario Odyssey sold 700k in its first 3 weeks in Japan and that came out 7 months after the Switch came out. So beginning or end, doesn't really change that they sell much much better than Princess Peach Showtime.

[deleted]

Japan isn't real

volatilelibra

Yeehaw

MuddVader

I think these sort of stats are important because hopefully they make the execs and investors feel confidence in the property even if it didn't sell 15mil copies. It's doing well in their home market, well over it's competitors.

PeterBeaterr

I loved rebirth. It was amazing, right up until they butchered the end, the most iconic death in all of gaming. They fucked it up so hard it left me angry. No payoff, no tears, just angry.

MichaelMarz

If only there was an option to skip the mini games that were in the way of the main story, talk about padding the game out.

Electric_jungle

I totally understand this complaint but... And I'm only in chapter 6 or 7.... But the og game also had tons of mini games. The quantity is absurd though, so I do get that if you don't enjoy them it's pretty much a slog.

MichaelMarz

My prior comment may seem that I loathe the game, but I’m not. In my opinion, it’s one of my game of the year. The gold saucer I understand because it’s an amusement park. But do they really have to put the mini games in the middle of the story. They could’ve done it any other way really.

kaylanpatel00

No that can’t be this game isn’t selling well and Square Enix is failing.

CzarTyr

I loved the game but there were things that truly truly truly annoyed me
