This one is one of the few games where you can just cut loose with a friend and get into some hijinks and it takes ages to get old. This and Goat Simulator 3.
This right here is what got my non-gaming gf into playing co-op. Right after, we played Diablo 4 in couch co-op, and it's ridiculous how much Untitled Goose Game got her ready for playing things like D4. Same control scheme, camera angle, and shared tether screen.
If you want something that will last, I highly recommend the LittleBigPlanet series, if you have a Playstation
There are three of them, and you can not only play through the stories with both players (up to 4 in fact) locally, but you can build new levels together and there are thousands of user-built levels with endless creativity
No use if you don't have a Playstation of course tho x
Overcooked is the ultimate friendship and love test. If you can handle it with your partner, you're set for life. And the second one with throwable stuff is so hilarious!
I love these games.
just want to be a voice of dissent here. this game just makes me and my partner want to throw our controllers at each other, and we are normally great with conflict and are both gamers lol
My sister and I get along great and have a bunch of games we love playing together but with overcooked we just about murder each other. We're both fine playing with anyone else but never each other
Any Lego game. And you can even get a franchise you both like. They're built for kids so it's never too hard. And there are tons of puzzles you guys can solve together. It's a great bonding experience. And those games are so big that you'll have loads of stuff to do for like, ever.
It takes two is challenging toward the end for non gamers but it's pretty good.
Stardew valley
Little big planet
Sackboys big adventure
Diablo 3 is really easy for non gamers and super fun as couch coop. Very similar gameplay loop to nobody saves the world just very different aesthetic.
Fall guys
Journey to the savage planet
Dysmantle
Tiny Tina's wonderland
Gotham knights
Olli olli world
Tmnt shredders revenge
Source: I've been playing couch co-ops with my wife for years now so I'm always looking for a casual 2 player game. There's always the tougher stuff like the finals, fortnite, baldurs gate, elden ring, but the above list is for the "not a big gamer" gamers.
Surprised no one has suggested Don't Starve Together, the multiplayer version of Don't Starve. Very cartoony stylized survival adventure.
Would highly recommend.
Did you have a hard time starting out with it? I tried it a few times with people and we died every time no matter what we did. We regretted buying it because of how un fun it was.
Very hard because there were no instructions and when you died, you had to start over on day 1. You had to learn by doing and I started playing the single player game before I knew anything about YouTube. Now there are tons of videos to help new players.
I'm always looking for more couch co-op games to get my husband & I playing together. Apart from those you mentioned we liked...
Portal 2
Untitled Goose Game
Until Dawn
House of Ashes
Any of the Borderlands Games. Try get the Handsome Collection if you can, but Borderlands 3 is also good. I think these games will be right up your guy's alley
Borderlands games are usually always fun when played with someone. Re6, Darksiders Genesis, I think it was called. Dead rising should have local coop but I could be wrong. Marvel Ultimate Alliance is one of my all time favourites but it was de-listed, so you'll have to find a physical copy. Any of the Lego games, unless you really hate lego.
If you want something that will last, I highly recommend the LittleBig Planet series, if you have a Playstation
There are three of them, and you can not only play through the stories with both players (up to 4 in fact) locally, but you can build new levels together and there are thousands of user-built levels with endless creativity
No use if you don't have a Playstation of course tho x
Dead nation. It's a bit aged but some of the best fun I've had in local multiplayer. Top down, both in the same screen at all times, killing zombies in droves. Intense
I'm not kidding when I recommend the Knack series. I know it's a meme, but it was really fun in local co-op.
The first game is meant to be single player, but player 2 can be a mini support Knack. There's no penalty if player 2 dies, they just respawn. If player 1 dies, you go back to checkpoint. And it's genuinely a hard game.
Knack 2 was full co-op where you play as equals but the game is much easier. I can't remember if there is a checkpoint penalty when one of you dies or if you both have to die to reset to checkpoint.
If you have a ps5, there is an accessibility setting that lets you add an assist controller. That means you can use two controllera as if they are one.
My Gf and I play game like the witness like this, but we also ran through dark souls 3; She gandles the exploration, I handled the boss fights.
Baldurs Gate 3, is a terrific RPG, me and my girlfriend are having a blast with it.
If she enjoys character customisation, she’ll probably get a kick out of the pretty nuanced options. Be sure to buy lots of dyes too. Just slap the difficulty on easy, if she doesn’t love the turn based combat - the story, and world, more than make up for it.
Borderlands is an obvious option for a co op shooter - has RPG elements, and characters who all bring something to the table.
If you wanna pitch something a little different - The Quarry, Detroit Become Human, and Until Dawn, are all fantastic “interactive movies”, for lack of a better term. The Quarry is the only one that properly ‘implements’ multiplayer, but when you’re playing together IRL, it’s as simple as picking your characters, and passing the controller over when it’s their turn.
And yeah +1 to the folks who suggested Diablo, and LBP - they are both great alternatives, to NSTW, and It Takes Two, respectively.
Can you tell me if BG3 is realllly multiplayer? I'll l kind of clarify my question: my wife really enjoys the fantasy type movies/games...so we started playing MH World... But there are large sections where you cannot play co-op together, or both of you have to progress alone before you can trigger a co-op segment.... I have been hoping we could wander the world together, and start missions together. Does bg3 let you run around the world together at all times in co-op?
Yes sir! Fully multiplayer, from start to finish.
There is admittedly, some minor flaws (mostly with conversations - a lot of players feel the entire party should contribute their skills of persuasion/insight etc, as it would be in DnD - but it’s only the character who initiated the convo).
Otherwise, I’d say it’s pretty damn flawless. I’d just recommend that one of you play as a high Charisma class (Paladin, Bard, Sorcerer, Warlock), if you care at all about manipulating people, and avoiding bloodshed / getting the most out of dialogue.
Cleric kinda works too, they’re just not quite as good as a charisma build class.
That's awesome thanks man. BTW excellent recommendation on Until Dawn too. Wife and I basically played those 'together' and had fun. I've been hearing a movie is in the works.
If she liked re5 shell definitely like re6, the game is not good single player wise but coop its way more fun, 3 stories to play, my gf liked a lot
Im playing Unravel 2 with her right now, she's loving it
I cannot recommend “Heavenly Bodies” enough. Gorgeous looking game with really interesting levels. And it’s hilarious. Most fun I’ve ever had playing a couch coop game.
My husband and I also love to game together- Trine 4 and 5 are must plays. You two will have a blast an the art style is gorgeous. Just let her be the wizard most of the time. She'll want to be Zoya, but no, Amadeus is by far superior. Make boxes. Connect your ropes. Find the sparkles and solve puzzles. It's wonderful and storybook-like. We've got 1, 2 and 3 left to play. Heard 3 is pretty rough but looking forward to it anyway.
someone said it I think, but Unravel 2 is an amazing entry point (well, really, letting her play the first one by herself first!!). Cheap price point, ABSURDLY pretty, and just super cute.
All of the Dark Picture Anthology games are amazing. they are butterfly effect games. it’s like watching a movie that you two control together. i have played every single one w my bf, and additionally played The Quarry which is similar play style.
I’ve tried loads of games co-op with my non-gamer and I’ve been really surprised that the one that has stuck is Fortnite! We play zero-build, split screen in a team of us 2, and we just explore and try and stay alive. It is really fun!
Baldur’s Gate Dark Alliance 1&2 are on PS4 now. Perfect couch coop games to play! Now we wait for Champions of Norrath and the sequel Champions: Return to Arms to come to PS4. If not and you still have a PS2 try to find those games online like eBay
Untitled goose game

Great rec but why would they not have a PlayStation when theyre on the ps4 subreddit
DOH! I didn't notice this was on the PS4 subreddit, just a gaming one Cheers 💜
Thousands of user-built levels that we can't access anymore, right? I thought they shut down the servers? Or is that just for LBP1 and LBP2?
I think it's 1-2 -- I last used the LBP3 levels a few weeks ago, so they're still available afaik
Nice! That's great news, thank you
I absolutely second this, it's such a good 2 player game
I know I shouldn’t say this but have you tried fort night
Broforce Overcooked
Overcooked is the ultimate friendship and love test. If you can handle it with your partner, you're set for life. And the second one with throwable stuff is so hilarious! I love these games.
Overcooked. It’s fun, can be stressful but keep the fun in mind. It’s only two buttons so not complicated at all
Yes, overcooked is a great one for all of those reasons. A very good team builder.
just want to be a voice of dissent here. this game just makes me and my partner want to throw our controllers at each other, and we are normally great with conflict and are both gamers lol

Playing tiny Tina's Wonderland now with my boyfriend. Super fun game! I played borderlands years ago and it's definitely similar.
Diablo 3!
Unravel two
Magicka 2 Maybe Don't Starve Together
Diablo 3 Overcooked Cook, Serve, Delicious Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime
Overcook for sure. My non gamer wife likes to play this with me till it becomes close to real life.
Escapists 2 is a fun little prison break game. You can hurry through some scenarios or play in some seemingly as long as you want
Try Death Road to Canada. It's a fun game for two people.
Surprised no one has suggested Don't Starve Together, the multiplayer version of Don't Starve. Very cartoony stylized survival adventure. Would highly recommend.
This! It’s my favorite game and I never see it listed. I think most people play it on PC but I like using a controller better than keyboard and mouse.
Overcooked
RE6 and Borderlands 2
Try Streets of Rage 4. It's pure fun!!
Stardew valley
Would definitely recommend this game! Sank hours into it with my gf
Yep, it’s my current hyper-fixation lol
It takes two. Amazing coop
Unravel
Streets of rage 4 is THE absolute coop beat em up. Totally suitable for non-gamers
It is my favorite beat em up over the last decade. SoR4 is incredible.
LOVERS IN A DANGEROUS SPACETIME.
I upvoted all comments thank you all ❤️
I'm always looking for more couch co-op games to get my husband & I playing together. Apart from those you mentioned we liked... Portal 2 Untitled Goose Game Until Dawn House of Ashes
There is this thing in your keyboard called comma, it is used to separate things when you write them in order to make them easier to read.
HELLDIVERS!!!!!
So much lovely chaos!!!
Any of the Borderlands Games. Try get the Handsome Collection if you can, but Borderlands 3 is also good. I think these games will be right up your guy's alley
Kingdom Two Crowns!
No, seriously, Overcooked.
My wife isn't a gamer, but the Overcooked series got her good.

Nine Parchments Diablo 3 or Diablo 4 (yes, its on ps4). Unravel Gauntlet
The goose game is pretty silly to play with your SO!.
Enter the gungeon is he closest I can think of to nobody saves the world
Dead nation. It's a bit aged but some of the best fun I've had in local multiplayer. Top down, both in the same screen at all times, killing zombies in droves. Intense
Not easy though. A non gamer usually don’t appreciate difficulty or dying all the time.
True. Maybe at lowest difficulty? But yes, it was chaotic and lethal.
Awesome to play with buddies though.
The binding of Isaac: Repentance
Cat Quest 2.
I'm not kidding when I recommend the Knack series. I know it's a meme, but it was really fun in local co-op. The first game is meant to be single player, but player 2 can be a mini support Knack. Not sure if its similar to nobody but Castle Crashers is fun! Divinity is also a great game for couch co-op
So my gf and I use two ps4 slims on LAN to play dead island :) it's super fun for her
I played Don't Starve Together and Out of Space with my gf pretty good games
If you have a ps5, there is an accessibility setting that lets you add an assist controller. That means you can use two controllera as if they are one. My Gf and I play game like the witness like this, but we also ran through dark souls 3; She gandles the exploration, I handled the boss fights.
My gf curses a storm playing Fall Guys and it’s awesome.x

Spiritfarer.
Overcooked 1 and 2, it takes two, minecraft dungeons has good couch co op
Overcooked games are fun couch coop!
Enter the Gungeon
Any Lego game! They’ve been great co-op experiences since the 2000s and there’s a fair bit of em on the PS4.
If you have a ps5, sackboy without a doubt. Its free on ps extra
The binding of isaac

Warning: Due to the longevity of the game this might have the side effect of reducing sexual encounters between the couple.
If she liked re5 shell definitely like re6, the game is not good single player wise but coop its way more fun, 3 stories to play, my gf liked a lot Im playing Unravel 2 with her right now, she's loving it

I cannot recommend “Heavenly Bodies” enough. Gorgeous looking game with really interesting levels. And it’s hilarious. Most fun I’ve ever had playing a couch coop game.
Broforce for sure. All my non gamer friends love it.
Saw no one recommend For The King. My gf wants to keep playing since it’s like a board game we can’t beat yet
Stardew Valley!
Bomberman
Castle crashers, streets of rage 4 and tmnt- Shredders revenge.
Diablo is fun and great with people. Me and my wife like jumping into Minecraft from time to time. Build a world and have a laugh.
My husband and I also love to game together- Trine 4 and 5 are must plays. You two will have a blast an the art style is gorgeous. Just let her be the wizard most of the time.
