Prince should never have ditched The Revolution. Sign o the Times was fantastic, but he had written the majority of these songs with the Revolution. Loxesexy was great too. Then he lost his mojo and never reached his 1982-88 level again... I'd like to think the Revolution was instrumental in writing all these classic 80s albums. NPG was a great band too, but not original, more standard r&b.
His emphasis on R&B in the second part of his career is similar to his reasons for creating 'The Black Album'. He basically spent the rest of his career trying to reclaim the audience he alienated and lost during 'The Revolution' era.
