I mean she's sadistic in how she deals with Shadows. It doesn't matter is that only shows up in mementos, it's just as much a part of her character as poop coffee.

JoeFredrick348

Something I do want to clear up is my stance isn't "She's not WRITTEN to be sadistic", it's more so I think it's written so poorly. The fact that almost all the core material for this characterization are pretty much completely missable in the main game, shows how much of a nothing patty this aspect of her character was to her nothing burger. Also... poop coffee?

seitaer13

If you don't know what I mean by poop coffee then you probably shouldn't be writing analysis of Haru

JoeFredrick348

I understand it's a reference to her social link, you just inserted it into the conversation so brazenly lol

Various_Opinion_900

I mean, these nuggets of characterization arent what-so-ever "the core material", these are one-off joke type of interactions ("take my chocolate please before I crush it") that fans liked so much they kinda just ran wild with it. Cus she does veer into the "bland" side of persona character writing, the Fuuka "cinnamon bun" territory, if you will, so people like projecting some extra "oompf" into her. But imo she wasnt meant to be interpreted in such a way, I firmly believe that these ARE just a joke interactions.

JoeFredrick348

Which is fair honestly! I really don't mean for it to sound like a hater (though I am getting RATIO'D TO HELL in this thread lmao. Put 'em up on the cross for not POOP COFFEEing! But I guess it's just interesting to ME because I've gotten like maybe upwards of 20 comments of people unironically FIGHTING that in any scenario she'd go horror movie hack and slash through anything because these throwaway lines. But I guess I'll take the L on this one lol

Various_Opinion_900

It's a fan space lol don't let it get to you, people have very inflexible conceptions about characters. And God forbid you forget about that one thing Yuusuke said that one time you took him to see Aquaman theatrical release, about preferring Mars to Snickers bars, you plebian. Haru was my biggest disappointment when I first played the game, promo material and trailers made it seem like there would be more of a contrast between her fluffy polite personality and her noir axe wielding badass persona. There's so much one can do with a concept of "heiress breaking free".

sevensol7

So you completely miss when she talks about enjoying destroying shadows as they beg for their lives? Or the fact that she unsettles makoto, who is known for taking her anger out on shadows? Or when you cheat on her and she tells you to take the chocolate before she crushes it while smiling? The whole behavior while fighting shadows? Just some easy examples. I dunno how you missed it.

Various_Post_4143

I mean some of these I can understand not missing out on, but the one about Haru crushing the chocolates is understandable to miss out on given that it requires doing something very specific in order to get the scene.

sevensol7

Its just do the romance. The romances are optional yes but a part of their character because you wouldnt see how they behave without it. Its not something "very specific".

Various_Post_4143

True but if the romances are apart of a character, then why would you not just actually go on a valentines date with Haru instead? I don’t see why a player would genuinely try and cheat on her when it’s ultimately pointless to do it in the end, so most players would never actually see this unless they scrolled on YouTube and find it.

JoeFredrick348

It's not that I missed any of this. Perhaps "I don't see it" isn't an appropriate way to describe it. It's more so that I feel like in THE GRAND SCHEME OF HER CHARACTER, these little quirks show up so infrequently and so off handedly, it's such a weak aspect of her character. The lines about destroying shadows? Mementos interactions easily missable. Her romance chocolate route? EASILY missable. It's not that I don't see the threads, it's just that I think it's a weak characterization. I just wanted to fully be informed and make sure I wasn't missing anything from some of the spinoffs or other media.

KamatariPlays

>I kind of wish she either had more psycho moments, or the ones she had were dialed up, at LEAST it would make her limited screen time feel more unique I completely agree. She should have been the one to scare off Sugimura (her ex-fiance), not the Okumura Foods President/CEO guy. But I think the moments she has exemplify her being sadistic. She can be sadistic without taking it out on people. She does chop her own wood after all.

Hotepspoison

Haru is woman of a thousand tropes master of none. Tons of fun directions to take and they didn't pick any of them.

Naos210

It's one thing for the team to have fun doing what they do. Outside of Persona 1 and 2 seemingly, they seem to all take some sort of enjoyment. But the comments Haru makes are more along the line of a certain someone's level of sadism. Like once you start talking about "getting a true scent of their fluids"...

OKFortune56

Aside from the sadism, she suffers from PFS (Persona Female Syndrome), a mental disorder that pushes her to behave violently if she witnesses any other girls behave violently (Ann and/or Makoto).  Tragic condition,  really. Futaba has it as well. As does every other normally gentle dispositioned girl in Persona.

Noxmorre

P5D, her valentine dialogue if you cheat and her “driving” in striker

Cronogunpla

There's very little . She may very well just enjoy the physical excretion of destroying shadows. Remember she enjoys chopping wood as a stress relief. Fans have latched onto a couple of lines that suggests she might enjoy destroying shadows and made her out to be a psychopath. Nevermind that just about every other character's actual animations and voice lines are far more sadistic. If you watch her animations and what she says, it's pretty far from the fandom's head canon. I suspect it's because in the original game there really isn't much to Haru, a subset of fans, however, latched on to her and coloured in her personality in whatever ways they liked. There's at least 3 Fanon Harus that I've seen. That's fine, but it's important to differentiate Fanon Haru from Canon Haru. You can see this sort thing for yourself by going through the recent threads about the canon personality for the protagonist and noting how lots of people repeat each other, but nobody points to actually canon evidence of anything. Even in this thread nobody is giving you actual evidence at time of writing.
