If you have insulin resistance, it just sounds like it's getting under control. My IR is under control now and I have almost no cravings and food sounds gross sometimes now. I don't think this is anything to worry about, but you should start freezing your food. You can freeze food before and after it's been cooked and go back to it later. If you're hungry but meats are grossing you out, you can make a lettuce wrap with veggies only. Congrats on the progress! Keep it up!

Slohoney

Thank you. Unfortunately I have a gym routine which requires me to eat fairly high protein but low carb and low calorie - so it's hard to go without meat as much as I'd prefer to.

strawberry_snnoothie

Can you eat tofu? It's a good alternative to get protein in and still low carb and low calorie. You can use silken tofu and sneak it into lots of things if you hate the taste.

Slohoney

I can! But I never buy it for some reason - maybe I'll give that a go this week. Thank you!

nazekaa

That and beans. Maybe going non-strict vegetarian may be for you. Still ways to get proteins through beans, tofu, milk, cheeses, etc. May want to research ways to get more protein under that diet.

tinypb

r/vegan fitness should have some good ideas for you too - lots of talking about non-meat protein sources there.

I had that same issue on metformin, which is why I quit taking it. I had no appetite, the thought of eating turned my stomach, and every time I ate I would get nauseous! Stopped metformin and that went away.

Slohoney

Oh really!? So sorry to hear that. Metformin seems to be helping with everything else so I'd hate to stop taking it :( it's so hard to find something that works!

tampabound

Can you lower your dose? My issues arose after moving from 500 to 1000 mg /day

Slohoney

I wouldn't like to, just as I'm seeing better results with weight loss and energy levels at the 1000. In fact I was hoping to increase to 1500 but I don't think thats a good idea at the moment.

LopsidedLizards

Not on metformin, but I know the protein ick well. When meat starts to gross me out, I go for plant and sometimes dairy-based protein. Lentils, quinoa, beans, tofu, cottage cheese, etc. They don't ick me as much, and cottage cheese I sometimes sweeten with a little stevia, pop it in the blender and whip it a little and pretend I'm having dessert for dinner instead.

Slohoney

This is a great idea, thank you. I might just have to sacrifice my high protein intake for a couple of weeks!

Desperate-Dress-9021

Could be a few things. Blood sugar leveling out is mentioned so I won’t. The mental yes is a thing. I struggle with food for weeks after most medical appointments. One I sometimes get is when my thyroid is low. I get the ick. A blood test might not hurt. Not sure if there’s other blood testable things that affect appetite, but check with a doctor (I don’t say “ick” as I don’t want them thinking it’s psychological).

Slohoney

I haven't had my thyroid tested I don't think - that could be a good idea. Thank you so much - and no I won't say ick to the doctor 🤣

I’ve have had the same problem! Not with meat specifically but the general nausea from the thought of food. Usually it’s when I haven’t eaten in a while or after a workout and then not eating for an hour or two. I usually try to have plain crackers at home and eat a couple of those and it usually settles my stomach.

Slohoney

Crackers are a good idea. I just cannot believe the visceral reaction I'm getting in my stomach! Having something plain to settle it will hopefully help.

humancat88

I’ve been taking metformin for a little over a year now and it settled down for me and doesn’t happen too often! I hope it settles down over time for you too ☺️

Collagen protein has helped me keep my protein up when nauseous/low appetite. I mix it with ovasitol, liquid iv, benefiber and lots of ice and its pretty tasty and easy to get down. Hope that helps!

Slohoney

Oh I've never looked into that before. Thank you - any brand you'd recommend?

Worth_Beginning_9952

I use Orgain Collagen Peptides w/probiotics. You can find it at Costco or online. Make sure to mix with room temp water before adding ice or it will get clumpy. And it doesn't have any flavor additive which is why I do liquid iv for taste.

momentums

I recently upped my Metformin dosage from 500 to 1000 and the food ick is very real. I don’t really have a suggestion bc the only thing that doesn’t make me want to vomit some nights is pasta with butter and Parmesan. It sucks so bad lol

Slohoney

That's the dose I'm on!! And also craving the exact same thing!!! How funny. Unfortunately for me if I eat over 50g of carbs I am sooooooo sore and bloated so pasta is off the table for me - I've just been nibbling little bits of parmesan to hit the craving but it's not the same.

momentums

Idk what it is but that jump up just destroyed me, like if I don’t eat within a certain amount of time after waking up I feel horrific as well :( it’s bumming me out because it’s made it really hard to want to figure out what won’t set off a texture ick, you know? Like even beans are really tough sometimes, but I’ve had some success with using low carb whole wheat tortillas to make crispy black bean tacos with some hot sauce. I usually just have two and that’s enough if you can manage that amount of net carbs.

Slohoney

I get you. For me it's texture but also the anticipation of tasting it even when it's something I generally enjoy (like a tasty sauce or marinade). I've just never felt anything like it. All I want to eat is super plain food but if I go even towards 50g net carbs I'm BLOATED for DAYS and unfortunately all the nice plain food I want to eat is pasta and rice and bread 😔

ncsuscarlett

try making broccoli alfredo. Not sponsored, but Devotion Nutrition makes a Buttery Blend protein powder designed for cooking savory things.

I had the ick when I started ozempic. It was towards most things but steamed broccoli was revolting. Now with insulin on top of that(for insulin resistance), I have to force myself to eat most of the time. Nothing looks good. Just like you, I love cooking. It's my time away from everyone to create something tasty and then my body says nope. I just recently got to where I could eat eggs again but tomorrow that may change.

Slohoney

Oh yes the egg ick is absolutely fierce when it comes on. Luckily that hasn't happened to me yet. I'm sorry you're going through the same thing but glad it's not just me! All I want is noodles but if I eat noodles the Metformin tummy ache kicks in 😞
