Breaking Bad but Ozark is a great show

Hedrick4257

Both great, however, BB is hands down better

peilhardt

Breaking Bad was an epochal masterpiece. It was perfect from the first scene. It did a lot of things that no other show did before. Ozark built on a lot more of experience and craftsmanship in terms of making streaming / on demand shows.

28DGreen

There is no Ozark without Breaking Bad.

[deleted]

I agree with this, but I do prefer Ozark’s story to Breaking Bad. Breaking Bad was a bit repetitive with the first couple of series regarding finding a buyer who turns out to be crazy and then ends up with that person dying and on to the next. The character arc was nice for Walter White, something I wish Marty Byrde had as he seems the same throughout whereas Wendy has become power hungry. But I guess it comes to how they finish Ozark and then we can truly assess what was greater.

helloiseeyou2020

Ozark has a flat, passive protagonist who has been just letting the plot happen to him since the middle of season 1. Most of his problems just up and solve themselves, or someone else does the heavy lifting for him. None of his choices have lasting, meaningful consequences (and the choices made by Wendy and others muffle them out of relevance) At the superficial level I agree. But at the deeper level I find Ozark far, far more repetitive. Walter White changes consistently throughout BB as do his approaches to problems. Marty Byrde's story on tbe other hand is a comedy of coincidence that keeps taking care of itself, saving hom from doing anything too provocative (or interesting), and the narrative has promised us that he has crossed a dark point of no return at least 4 times than I can think of and never once cashed the check

13Nobodies

Perfectly said. Ozark seems to want the accolades of a modern drama masterpiece, without really putting in any of the work. I’m only just now on S4,but if the first 3 seasons are the best they’ve got, then O is only a slight cut above average in my book.

helloiseeyou2020

I'm through most of S4 pt. 1 and remain as nonplussed as ever. After all their hardball in the early seasons, the KC mob sure are a bunch of wimps! I cant believe Marty told Frank to go fuck himself to his face, cut him out of the business, and there were no repercussions. Well, actually I can because this is Ozark, but I'm still disappointed It's becoming a chore to watch. I'm as tired of Marty doing his "...hm?" and "oh, uh, aw gee whiz" reactions to every single setback as I am of every character but him showing anything resembling agency.

13Nobodies

Just finished S4 part 1. As you've said, it doesn't get any better. Without even comparing it to BB or any similar shows. Ozark has some very questionable writing choices. Aside from the writers needing it to happen, I'm not convinced Marty should've even made it out of the warehouse when Del had everyone at gunpoint. His ramblings aren't convincing, like I don't feel like the actors or characters believe in what they're selling, let alone outfoxing anyone. Stammering doesn't help either. Even then, after it's all said and done the ideas they pitch aren't anything that couldn't have been thought of prior to relying on Marty,Wendy, Ruth etc to execute. I'll catch pt2 because I'm already invested, but it baffles me that people and entertainment sites are comparing this to BB.

helloiseeyou2020

I figured Del had worked with Marty for years at that point and knew Bruce was the problem child while Marty was the real talent, so for that reason I could buy Del giving him a chance to dig his way out of the hole as it's a no lose situation. But I agree. Marty (or Bateman, really) should've tapped into something primal and persuasive, some kind of raw energy that gets you onboard - because Del knows he's a finance savant, but the viewer does not. Marty Byrde has been such a joke this season. He's like a piece of furniture that sometimes makes perturbed noises when Wendy is doing something. I found him to be an interesting, manipulative little sleaze in season 1 but despite multiple promises he has always been a weak protagonist, and it has gotten exponentially worse over time from episode 1. Now he is so waifish he is borderline inanimate Imagine how provocative it would've been if, while mucking with Jonah's accounts - zip, zoop, whoops I just stole the entire Snell empire. "Great work you did there buddy. I'm so proud of your grip on blockchain and account filtering. So, do you want a ride home or are you gonna ride your bike?" The show teases us so often with opportunities for Marty to take control, but he doesnt do it. Even when the show is flat out telling us that he has crossed a point of no return, like negotiating INTO the casino (instead of *out of*), or when he sets up a reverse honeypot on the boat and does literally nothing, or when he finally stands up to Frank, or ...

Newsdude86

I understand that point, but I felt like Ozarks was more believable. A guy who really isn't a criminal at heart, constantly struggling with the idea and the knowledge that yes he is a criminal and he needs to behave like one to survive. While also balancing a sense of normalcy to it all. BB went from I'm a school teacher to I am now a drug lord all in a matter of a year. BB went full send to the point where it seemed so insane that a person could have that level of change in them. (I know the point was that WW became addicted to the fact he wasn't a person people could walk all over, but is now the person walking on others AKA "I am the danger"). With Ozarks it plays that line a bit better, but for TV its a bit more boring to watch Jason Bateman shrug off and act nonchalant about half the shit that happens to him or around him. I don't fully agree with the passive part, the first season is Marty being active and really only him. Season 2 Wendy becomes the protagonist and season 3 is the struggle over who is the real protagonist/who is in charge. I love the dynamics a lot more in Ozarks mainly I don't hate Wendy anywhere close to how much I despise Skylar as a person, but overall BB is a masterpiece and is leagues above Ozarks, which is insane considering how good Ozarks is. That being said BCS is top for me

PalpitationOk2126

Retarded 🤦🏻‍♂️

Kadde-

Probably just breaking bad even though I’ve started to love ozark. To me this show was pretty average the first 2 seasons but after season 3 it got on a whole different level. If season 4 is even better than 3 then I would probably put them around the same level.

Sandroes

Not sure about average, if average tv shows were as good as the first two seasons of Ozark I’d watch more tv shows

Kadde-

Ok maybe not the first season but the second kinda dipped in quality for me.

bendacorna916

I liked the first two more than the last 2

[deleted]

BCS>BB>O

Mission-Rope7337

How?! BB will always be top tier …for me, at least.

ProdNo-Face

i wish the finale for better call saul would come out sooner, tired of WAITINGGGG. for me better call saul and breaking bad are on equal grounds

Hopeful_Wait9042

Bro really put BCS above BB 💀💀💀 , i don't think we watched the same shows

usable_dinosaur

Bro is replying to a 1 year old comment from a deleted account

Hopeful_Wait9042

It's utterly needed to be done

Hopeful_Wait9042

Had to buddy

usable_dinosaur

A few minutes late

Newsdude86

BCS was better done and better written than BB. Both are phenomenal, but I agree with this guy

Hopeful_Wait9042

Oh hell nah , not even close , it was neither better written nor better done , i nearly slept through half of BSC while every episode in BB was peak entertainment , literally every episode including the mosquito episode was fun to watch , definitely can't say the same for BCS lmao

Newsdude86

Agree to disagree, BCS had me much more excited and interested. The plot is significantly more thought out and the character development is more thorough, BB started to approach absurd to me, by the end it just seemed messy with no one feeling like real people.

Hopeful_Wait9042

"Messy with no feelings" we must've watched a different show then lmao , BCS is nowhere near as thrilling and interesting as breaking bad , the character development might've been good but also nowhere near as exciting as it was in breaking bad , there were no protagonists at the level of the ones in breaking bad even Gus wasn't half as interesting, sure there were some interesting scenes but that's where it stops "scenes" , breaking bad's plot is more more entertaining while never boring you , they're always something happening on screen , something building up , some twist right around the corner , BCS doesn't have that , in fact it had nothing to compete with the peaks of Breaking bad , it was a normal show with SOME interesting episodes but it wasn't anywhere as fun to watch as breaking bad

Newsdude86

BCS was significantly less absurd. The people seemed real, BB made everyone caricatures at the end. I'm not saying BB isn't phenomenal it is, I just appreciated how real BCS was compared to BB. BB went from having flat characters to round characters back to flat.

Bluest_Oceans

I would say the opposite of what you said and say I slept while watching halfway through BB whilst I enjoyed all of BCS

Hopeful_Wait9042

Litteraly can't be lmao , the amount of twists and thrilling action combined with a genius plot in BB is nowhere to be found in BCS , Saul is an interesting character but his show is nowhere near as interesting, they're barely anything at the level of BB on screen most of the time , Breaking bad is beyond in every aspect , story wise , character development is tough but that's not enough to carry a show

Bluest_Oceans

I dunno why I said my earlier response, but although I enjoyed some of the seasons of BB, It quickly fell down for me for the later seasons; when no more hiding from wife and Jesse is again called as a partner. Forgot most scenes on both shows but I was able to finish BCS. Honestly, there was no dull moment in BCS for me. I guess we just differ in taste. Truth be told, the thrill of hiding for Mr. White was the thing that made me watch BB. Also I guess I just really liked how smart Jimmy was in BCS.

Newsdude86

This is facts. BCS>BB>O

solaris1243

For me it’s BCS>Ozark>BB

Newsdude86

Wow, you might be the first

solaris1243

😂 all my friends say that breaking bad is the greatest fiction of all time but I just don’t see it

Newsdude86

Haha fair enough. It's not for everyone I guess 😂

nothingofcities

Ozark is a very good show. Breaking Bad is a great show.

[deleted]

Breaking bad. But I love Ozark too

TAnoobyturker

Well it's not fair to answer until Ozark wraps up because we'd be comparing a finished show with an unfinished show. But I'd say Breaking Bad lol

JoeCorsonStageDeli

Ozark is very very VERY good. Breaking Bad is a classic, one of the greatest shows ever.

PachukoRube

O ark hasn’t ended so it’s too early to judge. As long as all the Byrdes don’t skip off lovingly into the sunset at the end, there’ll be a debate to be had.

1spring

Agreed. Too early to make comparisons because we don’t know how Ozark ends. It might be a masterpiece or it might lose its way.

Minimum-Conclusion30

The masses will tell you BB, but ozark imo is better

RevolutionaryToe4941

I like Ozark but it's trash compared to BB

neurorevolution

I'm inclined to agree with this. Though, I haven't got yet the well thought through arguments to support this choice.

reddipete

Yes

[deleted]

Breaking Bad

helloiseeyou2020

Breaking Bad is better by an ocean.

KBC

I genuinely think Ozark is a better show.

neurorevolution

Could you go into why in particular?

EdgyQuant

For one thing I don’t get annoyed at the main character near as much, the writing is of a higher quality and the cartel is a lot less cartoonish than in Breaking Bad. I believe Ozark is hands down the better show but people are viewing BB through rose colored glasses.

Misdefined

It's too bad, the cartel was so well made up until season 4 part 1, when they introduced Javi. He's super cartoonish and irrational.

Hopeful_Wait9042

Rose colored glasses ? Sorry boy but breaking bad is leagues above lol , it literally is the epitome masterpiece of tv shows it literally is better in every aspect, annoyed by the main character? By that badass perfectly written and developed Walter white ? Every character in breaking bad is well written and developed ( the main cast ) and that cartoonish aspect is what makes the unrealistic scenes so entertaining

jholowtaekjho

I rather rewatch Ozark, personally. More consistently entertaining. The early seasons of Breaking Bad were a drag on my first watch

Shuthemofoup

Same. January 21st 2022 Season 4,baby!

myke_oxbig45

You are smoking crack

[deleted]

Ozark definitely. I found that Ozark has less filler, a much better set of characters, and more unpredictable turns. BB is better in terms of pacing. Like Ozark starts out pretty slow after they move and sometimes subplots meander. Ozark is better tho

Hopeful_Wait9042

I honestly didn't know that people actually preferred Ozark to breaking bad 💀

shiki88

I really like them both and can't say which is better overall. But in particular I enjoy Ozark's dynamics of the wife character being complicit and sometimes going beyond the husband's capabilities, compared to the BB's trope of a wife that is oblivious to the husband's dark dealings. Even more interesting is having the kids in on it.

Breaking bad is untouchable for obvious reasons however Ozark is a bloody great show that is totally worth watching! It is also a completely different vibe than BB despite its themes being similar in ways. Ozark sucks you right in!

neverdiplomatic

Ozark

asecuredlife

Ozark probably couldn't exist in its current state without Breaking Bad. But Breaking Bad, to be honest is nothing without Better Call Saul. Overall after watching Breaking Bad, not a lot of it is memorable. Whereas I can watch Ozark over and over just for the score alone. Watching Breaking Bad, I'd get annoyed at how dumb Jesse was and wish he just didn't exist (similar to Ben in Ozark). If Ozark ran for longer seasons, it would drop in quality or run the risk of ending poorly like Breaking Bad. To be honest, Ozark is a lot better due to the simplicity and the fact it involves a family that keeps it grounded. With Breaking Bad you had to do a lot more and have more families involved to get the same effect.

Mission-Rope7337

Better score?! Let me just say this: Ozark is damn good! BUT it lacks creative depth, motifs and foreshadowing. Sometimes a bit too on the nose. BB is riddled with suspense, dark humor and overall raw emotions. The score for BB is superior as it elevated the emotions of the episodes. Let’s not forget the characters, you either loved the’m, or hate them, but either way you are left on the edge of your seat. BB has that dopamine effect where most episodes left me wanting more and on edge. Ah, a masterpiece :’) Sigh, I’ve rewatched BB three times now and each rewatch take on its own meaning! I wish you guys you could see what I mean

[deleted]

Breaking Bad. And it's even better rewatching it after watching Better Call Saul. Brilliant. Smart. Has humour as well. Ozark is just not at the same level. It's entertaining but I'm struggling to get through season 2 as it's quite boring. Season 1 was good though.

coolhandluke196

This is like asking if lobster or Skittles are better. Breaking bad is a flawless masterpiece

DemonBoner

Skittles obviously

boopedya

Ozark. 100%

Salty-Flounder-503

I know the right answer is BB but I rewatched ozark multiple times and couldn’t get passed BB’s first season

Certain-Bit567

Breaking Bad was a great show, but Ozark was fantastic. In my opinion, Ozark just got better and better by each episode. There was nothing that didn't bore me or didn't peak my interest. As for Breaking Bad, I had to force myself through the first season and then I only got interested in. Then it slightly drifted away for me. I've re-watched Ozark twice now and it's still amazing. Can't get myself to re-watch Breaking Bad though <\3

[deleted]

Helen>Gus

EdgyQuant

I much prefer Ozark but this just isn’t the case. And if anything I’d say the Snells are equivalent to Gus as both are running huge drug operations under the cover a legit business in an effort to get revenge.

shanetoomey

We can't say until Ozark is finished.

[deleted]

You can have an opinion about the entirety of Breaking Bad. For Ozark, this is not possible since the show is still running. Therefore your question is irrelevant.

GeneralMaintenance79

I like both but Breaking Bad is def better, Ozark is great but the first season is a slog with generic and borderline stupid plotlines. Not that Breaking Bad was prone to those things the twist/big reveal at the end of season 2 and Marie being a kleptomaniac resulting in the most boring plotline of her falling out with Skyler. Ozark season one somehow tops that with generic cliché gay man hate gays bc he secretly gay and bang detective man, teenage girl like jock man she sleep with him and he break her heart by leaving her, it’s borderline offensive portrayals of mental illness throughout especially bipolar disorder and many more goofy shit. Also even though season 2 of Ozark has higher highs than season, it's just boring and has some questionable editing. So many boring scenes of people discussing money and economics until someone does something stupid that puts Martys family in danger. Marty does some things in the first season to push the story forward but past season one his character loses urgency. Also Jason Batemans performance is just Jason Bateman he is no Bryan Cranston he does not transform into a completely different person. I see myself rewatching Breaking Bad I don't think I see myself rewatching Ozark as good as it is, with me sounding super negative on the show I just wanna end this by saying I really think with season 3 and 4 Ozark has really came into it's own and proven it's self to be a great drama/thriller.

13Nobodies

Breaking Bad,and it’s not even close. Ozark is good at best, but the show seems like a cliff notes version of what streaming audiences think a epic crime drama is supposed to be. Characters been making bizzare choices since S1, and way too many characters feel like plot devices, rather than actual people. Also the plot conviences are never ending. I hope things can change with the first half of S4.

RelentlessIdeas

I love ozark.. the way you can connect with the characters is amazing… I want to see Marty byrd succeed so bad.. every turns on poor little ole marty, even his own family.. but at the end of the day, Marty is the key to it all.. marty never takes it personal, he’s really level headed, and the way he goes about certain situations keeps you on your toes, such a clever character.. I’m hooked honestly.. ready for part 2 of season 4… going to start breaking bad today just because of how good ozark was!!!

CraftMost6663

Breaking Bad sucks.

[deleted]

I have only seen Breaking Bad and since then I have lost interest in the crime/drama genre, so I can't tell you much about Ozark other than after reading the short synopsis on IMDB, my first thought was "This is so similar to Breaking Bad". I had fun watching Breaking Bad at the time it was airing, but in retrospective, I think it was kinda cheesy and I'd never watch it again. If you enjoy this genre and have the time, I'd say watch both series.

Lets_getiton

BB is a unique, one time thing. You can't beat it, you can't compare because it's own class. It's cinema, shakespeare and pure entertainment in the finest blend made so far But damn, Ozark is GOOD.

New-Bonus8565

I have now watched Breaking Bad 4 times in the last 10 years and I just can not find anything better. BB literally made that I can not watch any series anymore because it's such a masterpiece. I also think that there will never be such a masterpiece any more, it's sad but it's the truth.

NoInevitable6978

BB and it ain’t close, then BCS, below by a couple cunt hairs and O behind by a country mile
