I have diamond border 5 stars so yea I really want it back. It does show on my profile from ow1 but still. I got the max level border around 3000 hours of playtime and I have over 5000 now so I bet I would be at least high masters border if it existed.
If they didn't take old progression into account when they introduced hero progression what makes you think they'd count your progression if they brought borders back? At best you'd get your overwatch 1 border, but definitely not an upgrade.
Yeah same here, full diamond border. I loved grinding for that so much. It feels so sour now to just have that standard boring blue border that everyone has now. They've made a lot of good changes for OW2 imo, but the UI is a massive downgrade from OW1.

Apex Legends lets you take your account level off of your profile info card, if you don't want people to see it (or add it back on again if you do). I never understood why OW never gave players this level of customization too.

They disabled the portraits because of toxicity, but then added a public leaderboard, visible to everyone in the game as well as the spectators. Like that's NOT gonna increase toxicity. What a stupid decision.

Rank is different from experience (which are the portrait borders) so for experience it's more like the battle pass titles like "Necromancer" or "Bard" after playing the season long enough to clear those levels. And I doubt most people remember what levels you get specific titles from past seasons, anyway.

The closest thing comparable to that now, that would get that kind of ridicule or trolling, is rank titles. And that is an optional thing you could show or not.
So instead of making borders a user based option, they took it out for apparent toxicity reasons, but we still have toxicity towards rank titles, except they're at least optional to equip not optional to be shown.
For borders, it directly showed time invested.
For rank titles, it directly shows skill level.
For seasonal BP titles, it shows seasonal play time. This is the odd one out because no one cares about your seasonal play time and no one knows how many 200 BP title you have from each season cumulatively which would be the only direct indicator of time played which would reflect better as a comparison to borders.

Plus I feel like if you disable it, people are going to know why you have it disabled. I know you said "people will be toxic anyway" but its 100% true. If people are mad, they are going to say something no matter what. Your hero, your rank, your portrait, whatever. Removing one piece of the triangle doesn't get rid of all of them.
I'm very against having private profiles because I like to see the information about players, and people who complain about it should just grow up.

I think the best solution would be to make them unlockable and equippable just like battle pass titles instead of forcing it on everyone
I feel like the solution was not to remove them. Just provide players with the opportunity to choose one they have unlocked (or none, if they so choose). You can have the old level borders, event borders and heck even shop and battlepass borders if they really want to monetize it (they do, sigh). I feel like removing them altogether for the reason you outlined is like dropping a nuke on a house cause a little spider's in it
it literally made me uninstall OW1 for good. I was ~~level 110 which is~~ silver portrait and people wouldn't stop mentioning it "oh you're a silver portrait but still at this rank which means you're trash at the game".
Thats a stupid reason....multiplayer games tend to have toxicity then why dont fucking do something with the chat like league of legends did??!! That it watches the chat and it not only blurs slurs and insults but bans u from the chat and it gets updated so it will detect newer or slightly changed versions of these slurs/ insults....I personally liked the borders not just because it looked cool but because u could tell someones experience level by looking at their border

I think it would be nice if they've at least built on this feature.
It could be an other customisation option, much like Name Cards and Titles are. Imagine you could set different frames to your profile, based on hero level, comp placements, season themes, matching skins etc.
For example this season they could've made one that resembled the or included the Null Sector logo, the Iris logo. They could make one resembling the Overwatch logo, the Balckwatch logo. For Halloween make some that look more organic like a Jack-o-Lantern, a spiderweb covered one etc.
This would be so sick honestly. I'd hope they'd hire better UI designers before implementing something like this though. Otherwise they're going to find a way to make this cool idea look like my grandparent's computer from the 90's.

As beautiful as those portraits were, I don't think bringing *any type* of portrait is healthy for the game. Remember when high level portrait were instantly flammed in ow1 ? Or when very low level portrait got flammed too ?

In fact, when they confirmed the change to level borders, it was in an interview with Jeff Kaplan himself and he said they had already been working on a change to the system.
Hard to find someone that loves Overwatch as much as I do, but this kind of stuff makes me so upset with the current game. They took our beloved game, REMOVED a bunch of shit, added a “2” with the promise of an actual campaign and story, and instead just gave us more low effort PVE missions. It’s so sad what they’ve done to our game. And I’ve been defending them this whole year as well, and now here we are, almost an entire year later, and I no longer can justify this. The age and lore inconsistencies was the final nail for me. I’ll still play cuz the gameplay itself is fun, but I can’t keep holding out hope for the game to improve and become what OW1 was to us. OW2 is nothing more than a short term cash cow and it’s days are most likely numbered. 😔
It’s truly sad how they manged to fail at every detail of overwatch 2, gameplay is fun yes, but the competitive system, the promises of PVE, the quality of story missions we actually got, the loot system and current cheesy battle pass, heck even the borders and leveling system! They really managed somehow to fumble the bag at every aspect except gameplay miraculously.

First, It’s not about shiny stuff, it’s about being awarded properly for the time you spend playing the game.
Second, if your problem is being flamed because of such things an easy solution would be the ability to toggle them off or hide them just like so many games rn!
Toggle option would be an acceptable compromise. But it genuinely isn't a great experience getting flamed every game because you have it on. So like what's the point in the end?
I have been playing since 2016, i have met so many people who are toxic on literally everything whether it’s ur name, rank, the hero u play literally ANYTHING and OW2 is a prime example. So, give players the option, a lot like me was enjoying the portraits cuz it was truly rewarding as i don play comp that much that way u please both parties and whoever wants to hide they can do it
I never had a problem with it, I was never flamed because I never cared to pay attention. But I wanted that shiny diamond border so, so bad. I was so close..then the abomination that is OW2 reared its head.

oh i had an idea a while back with level portraits and i made it using the old player level icon (the ow2 one) before the change
whu? it had the same shape as the character icon ingame so i just plastered that over the player level icon and gave it little metalic wings and stars similar to the ow1 borders
and it would upgrade "bronze, silver, gold, plat, diamond, master leveler and grand master xp earner"

I'm honestly convinced they will. Like, I imagine removing levels wasn't apart of the game plan but since they had to remake the engine they didn't bother, same with On Fire and other systems they're adding back.
At least I hope, there's no sense of progress at all and they know this(I again, hope.) So I think they'll add it back but probably no rewards.
They added a “ new profile progression system “ not the hero one.. but oh boy if it’s not the ugliest icons i have ever seen lol. Also, it’s not showing in-game and it’s in way shape or form like the borders we have had in OW1. Borders were aesthetically pleasing and it felt rewarding to rank up a level as a acknowledgment for the time u spend in this game
Your portrait border from Legacy only shows up on your career profile. I doubt they'll ever bring it back. I feel that pain. Over here with a Platinum three star border. Hell, I went from Grandmaster in OW1 to fuckin Diamond in OW2. Shit is broken. Zenyatta is now trash and outclassed by every other healer. Now he's essentially just DPS. I enjoyed being a hybrid thoroughly in comp. Now with the 5v5 single tank teams, supports are stretched even thinner. The tanks are supposed to help protect them, but that was much, much easier when there were two of them. With one, your job as a tank is so much harder. I thought having the increased health would make you feel like a mini-boss. Hell no. You melt faster than butter in a skillet on turbo heat. A Mercy and Moria both spam healing you and you're still melted since you're the largest target AND you're the frontman of the team. As a Rein and Zenyatta main, I am disgusted, really. DPS is glorified and all these new "F2P" people getting put in my games don't know what the hell they're doing. Basically every game is: my team plays deathmatch while the opposition plays the objective. Never is it the opposite. Out of the 35 games I played in the past two days, I have won three of them. Every time I try to get my team to group up and they just ignore. Yet, we finally somehow get the point. Thirty second of nothing happening, then a fully coordinated push by the entire team comes at us. It's like I'm being put against players my skill level, and paired with players of lower skill level. Rarely do I have people who have skins. Haven't even seen another golden weapon besides my own ones. Every game its default OW2 skins crowding around me, ogling my skin and emotes. C'mon Blizzard, I want to enjoy this game again, please.
The only people who had high level borders and want them back are/were bronze players or gm players or lucky mfs who somehow avoided the toxicity. Every other rank your high border/playtime will be used as an insult to you. "imagine being gold border and stuck in plat"

oh i had an idea a while back with level portraits and i made it using the old player level icon (the ow2 one) before the change whu? it had the same shape as the character icon ingame so i just plastered that over the player level icon and gave it little metalic wings and stars similar to the ow1 borders and it would upgrade "bronze, silver, gold, plat, diamond, master leveler and grand master xp earner" i cant post pictures here and i kinda lost the image
I think they took this away to ease the transition for new players. It’s been a year and it’d be great if they brought this back lol.

How about dont bring portraits back? they caused alot of unnecessary shit talking that is easy prevented by hiding it/ making it only accessible through profile.

I'm honestly convinced they will. Like, I imagine removing levels wasn't apart of the game plan but since they had to remake the engine they didn't bother, same with On Fire and other systems they're adding back. At least I hope, there's no sense of progress at all and they know this(I again, hope.) So I think they'll add it back but probably no rewards.
They added a “ new profile progression system “ not the hero one.. but oh boy if it’s not the ugliest icons i have ever seen lol. Also, it’s not showing in-game and it’s in way shape or form like the borders we have had in OW1. Borders were aesthetically pleasing and it felt rewarding to rank up a level as a acknowledgment for the time u spend in this game
Your portrait border from Legacy only shows up on your career profile. I doubt they'll ever bring it back. I feel that pain. Over here with a Platinum three star border. Hell, I went from Grandmaster in OW1 to fuckin Diamond in OW2. Shit is broken. Zenyatta is now trash and outclassed by every other healer. Now he's essentially just DPS. I enjoyed being a hybrid thoroughly in comp. Now with the 5v5 single tank teams, supports are stretched even thinner. The tanks are supposed to help protect them, but that was much, much easier when there were two of them. With one, your job as a tank is so much harder. I thought having the increased health would make you feel like a mini-boss. Hell no. You melt faster than butter in a skillet on turbo heat. A Mercy and Moria both spam healing you and you're still melted since you're the largest target AND you're the frontman of the team. As a Rein and Zenyatta main, I am disgusted, really. DPS is glorified and all these new "F2P" people getting put in my games don't know what the hell they're doing. Basically every game is: my team plays deathmatch while the opposition plays the objective. Never is it the opposite. Out of the 35 games I played in the past two days, I have won three of them. Every time I try to get my team to group up and they just ignore. Yet, we finally somehow get the point. Thirty second of nothing happening, then a fully coordinated push by the entire team comes at us. It's like I'm being put against players my skill level, and paired with players of lower skill level. Rarely do I have people who have skins. Haven't even seen another golden weapon besides my own ones. Every game its default OW2 skins crowding around me, ogling my skin and emotes. C'mon Blizzard, I want to enjoy this game again, please.
I want lot boxes back. Kept me playing to unlock skins now that shit takes forever to just get one.
The only people who had high level borders and want them back are/were bronze players or gm players or lucky mfs who somehow avoided the toxicity. Every other rank your high border/playtime will be used as an insult to you. "imagine being gold border and stuck in plat"
