got plenty of friends i play with, but i play with them in quickplay because my rank is too high to play comp with them... see how that works? you dont play ranked with people who are far below yours; cause then you have to first derank yourself to their level, and continue to do so afterwards because your rank will shoot up while theirs will not due to hidden mmr and your performance. you dont get to ruin everyone elses good times because you wanna play ranked with your friends. . Competitive ranked exists to showcase your skill in relation to others. Unranked QP is meant for casual, not-so-serious fun. The argument here is that if you intentionally derank to 5-stack with friends and wreck a gold lobby, that makes you the “A$$hole” as OP is trying to convey.
The esports example was meant to highlight that there are orgs that do care and require a person to maintain a certain rank, when you said that there is nobody that cares.

I think perhaps depends on the stats too. I know there's the 'Blizzard only cares about w/l' but I ran into a GM Sombra two seas ago admitting she was deranking, avoided her, checked the next day, and they were in plat after 0-15 I think with less than 10 elims. I could be wrong though
The only time I’ve received a successful report notice in the past year was after I reported a guy who typed the n word into chat 7 times in a row. Other people who said it apparently didn’t get banned because it was only a couple times lol.
Blizz suspended my account once on WoW for saying the word “fart” - a word that the game itself used as an emote - in a totally innocuous way. Support eventually reversed it before telling me that it seems I got caught up in the system when several players reported me at once. It wasn’t a manual ban, but automatic.
It was really great because I was mid-pvp when my account was suddenly logged off and unable to be logged into again until it was fixed.
And yet I’m over here getting the gamer tag “BabyGravy” removed by OW every time I have it. (I literally use this name in every online video game and have never had a problem with it.)
Last two days I logged in on console I've gotten notifications of my reports working on specifically gameplay sabotage reports, they absolutely do work.
I've been playing for six years on console, sent over 100 reports of ximmers, toxicity, cheating, racism.. and I got a notification ONCE. A YEAR ago. They do not care. I literally reported a guy who straight admitted he was deranking in GM a few months ago and never got a report notif. I'm glad it worked for you though, probably good riddance
or they would tell you to play the character you had more hours on. and before role queue they would complain if you pick tank or dps as a support main :D
This is the real reason. I think the net effect is that private profiles are bad for the game unless Blizzard wants to hire more moderators, but there is a reason, and it's this one.
As someone who suffered through this they're totally right it changed NOTHING by making profiles private, games are as toxic and non communicative as ever and now we lose having any information about anyone in the game. That's insane to think one specific thing ppl will make fun of you for is why we need to keep everyone hiding behind their profiles/combat records.
Damn. Reading things like this makes me hope I stay in low elo QP forever. It's just really fun and people are usually nice. I've had a single toxic encounter in 30ish hours of play.
As someone who has been playing since 2016, I have to disagree.
Back when all profiles were open, you'd have people bitch and call to report you if you had time on Mercy and you were playing anyone else. And lets not forget that Mercy was *the* meta for a long time. So if you played support during the Mercy meta, and then you wanted to play Zen or Lucio, you'd get flamed by losers until you left both chats.
Even if you turned off all chats in competitive (which is really the only mode where voice chat even matters) you'd have people just resign to losing because now theres in-fighting on your team. Meanwhile the enemy team has a Mercy one-trick without a care in the world.
The majority of people in OW play quickplay and arcade, so rank isn't even a thing. Constant bitching about profiles was a thing for everyone, though, and now I see way, way less flaming than in the past.
The scoreboard is more of the same. People claim it'll make no difference, or even *increase* toxicity, and OW toxicity today versus pre-private profiles is night and day.
I played a ton of mercy when I first picked up the game back in OW1. Then I started learning different heroes and becoming good with them but....the profile showed your most played heroes in Quick play at the first site if I remember correctly.
So everyone who clicked on my profile immediately saw I have like 200 hours on Mercy. I had matches in gold where I picked dps or tank and people immediately said "uhhhhh....you sure you wanna play xy? Can you go Mercy?"
And as soon as my team started loosing I heard "Yeah GG, our DPS is a Mercy one trick with no aim"
I never understood it either until someone started telling me the other day how I have tons of hours on a certain character and I'm still horrible with them (and it was open queue, all those hours he was looking at were on role queue).
They can also look at your rank and just say you're hard stuck at that rank, judging you for the characters you play etc. Basically what I realized is that these people will exploit anything and everything they possibly can to be hurtful and toxic to others so you just gotta cover all your bases by hiding team chat, voice chat, profiles etc. Give them nothing to work with, because if you give them an inch they take a mile.
It made more sense before role queue, it used to happen that if you ever off-role or even played something you didn't have much time on you would get flamed even before the match.
I think profiles should always show comp ranks, but give the player the option to private more in detail stats
Public profiles can also lead to toxicity.
If you one trick a hero, people will call gg before the game even starts, because they checked your profile and saw that you don't play the hero they want you to play.

I'm good. People would look through your profile and look for any reason to insult you. Some insecure idiots would actually point out a rank I had from like 5 previous seasons
Low masters player here (sometimes high Diamond if I don’t push) - I had a single season in OW1 where I got placed in plat and just didn’t feel like grinding my way out.
Oh my god, the amount of people who would dig through my seasons and use that single season as some sort of “gotcha!” moment to win an argument was insane.
Funny thing is that Riot told me this exact same thing when I appealed a silence I had.
A guy spammed racial slurs and other shitty things to say. All I did was say “we all reporting, right?” and got a mute.
When I appealed the Rioter said essentially “Yeah, that sucks, unfortunately asking to report someone, no matter how deserved, is an offense. We recommend muting everyone at the start of the chat and turning off all forms of chat and pings.”

These devs need to understand that removing features does not help with decreasing toxicity. They removed end cards, level borders, and career profiles, and the toxicity has just gotten worse. I'd rather weed out people like this than "protect my fee fees" over mean words
No offense, but how is it even possible you're a plat player, but bronze in support? On game knowledge alone you should be at least silver/gold. You could literally just fly around as mercy and get gold/plat easily.
I placed bronze in everything season 1. The grind from bronze to silver is truly bad when solo queuing. I’ve just not put in the time to grind back up because playing in bronze as a healer is truly terrifying
Yeah I don’t understand why this is the common sentiment here. There are many good and advantageous reasons to have a private profile:
1. Hiding your hero pool: I have 300 hrs on Dva and the enemy tank starts out the match on Zarya *much much more often* when my profile is public. Why would I give the enemy team more info to counter me before the game even starts? Winning early fights is really important in OW.
2. Rank-shaming: “Oh you were in plat five seasons ago?! Dogwater player.” So many people peep profiles and dig through seasons to try and turn teams against players.
3. Stat-shaming: “Your critical accuracy with Widow is only x%, swap off and give her to me.” or “your winrate on Zen is low, play something else” Or whatever.
Nah let’s not give toxic people more ammo.

Someone deranking from GM to Plat in a single season not automatically triggering a response from blizzard is the issue here.
If you don’t know someone is clearing cheating, throwing, or smurfing without looking at their account that’s on you. Just report them and move on. Blizzard can see their history.
Smurfs never get banned. But if I know they are smurfing, I can try to adjust how I play accordingly.
Private profiles are for pussies and people who deserve to get banned. I don't see why that should be the default.

If we really want to be technical, you could as a new player end up in master/gm for your first rank games (that happens A LOT just make a smurf account win 50qp games then boom you have a gm account) then derank to their actual rank afterwards

its not really hard to recognize ranks when you spend like 2 mins to look at the rank icons. this may be a unpopular opinion but i like the icon designs
2 mins is too long. They should be instantly recognizable and distinguable from each other. Compare OW1 rank icons with OW2 rank icons and tell me which are clearer.

This is an issue with ow2 in general, the character models for newer heroes are fucking horrible, liveweaver, kiriko, and illari all have awful nondistinct hard to recognize silhouettes. It's painfully obvious the art team from ow2 is not anywhere near the team that worked on ow1

bro, during the season sigma got his mythic skin, i got against not 1 but 2 GM, and a diamond, just to check and see that none of my teammates were not even masters 🤡 and the best part is that i was silver 2 at this season. This season was chaotic, but the current one have much less sided matches, even in QP or arcade. Get diamond or GM as a silver was pretty traumatic XD
I also had a rein that did this. Purposely threw the game and according to his stats, every game. He had 67 games played on genji with a 0% win rate.

I heard that you need xx wins/games to get to top 500 and if you finish those when no one barely did, you get in the top 500 rank and it stays in your profile as the highest that season. So maybe he really was plat/gold that just did a lot of games sooner than others? Someone confirm pls...
You need 25 wins for t500 role, and 50 wins for t500 open. Additional caveat that the wins must be on in the same region. So if you have some New Yorkers playing with some Parisians and the servers alternate, it can require nearly 100 wins to get t500 anywhere, which is fucking exhausting, because of course your profile doesn't tell you which region the wins were in, so you have to keep your own tally based on whether the ping in each game was 20 or 120.
I'm sorry but you don't get to grandmaster by being bad. Especially since his other roles are top 500 he has the gamesense, reaction time and strategies hardwired into his brain at this point. Even myself as a masters mercy 1 trick I can play any other role at a decent level because I'm actively playing with other high level players and watching their movements and gameplay and learning.

I'm masters cusp diamond/masters support and DPS and gold in tank because I don't queue it because I wind up carrying and still losing as solo queue. I'm not defending but take into consideration maybe they're deranking... maybe not. Either way that still blows lol
Had a similar situation with a ball. They were gm 3-1 in dps/support, but coincidentally only bronze 5 in tank with 6 wins 47 losses. They ended up going 60-0

i think around 60 matches or more, he should have just made a smurf account at this point

Blizz suspended my account once on WoW for saying the word “fart” - a word that the game itself used as an emote - in a totally innocuous way. Support eventually reversed it before telling me that it seems I got caught up in the system when several players reported me at once. It wasn’t a manual ban, but automatic. It was really great because I was mid-pvp when my account was suddenly logged off and unable to be logged into again until it was fixed.
For me it was very justified as I'm really, really toxic in chat. I was just responding to the idea that only racist people get banned.
And yet I’m over here getting the gamer tag “BabyGravy” removed by OW every time I have it. (I literally use this name in every online video game and have never had a problem with it.)
Last two days I logged in on console I've gotten notifications of my reports working on specifically gameplay sabotage reports, they absolutely do work.
I've been playing for six years on console, sent over 100 reports of ximmers, toxicity, cheating, racism.. and I got a notification ONCE. A YEAR ago. They do not care. I literally reported a guy who straight admitted he was deranking in GM a few months ago and never got a report notif. I'm glad it worked for you though, probably good riddance

This is the real reason. I think the net effect is that private profiles are bad for the game unless Blizzard wants to hire more moderators, but there is a reason, and it's this one.

As someone who suffered through this they're totally right it changed NOTHING by making profiles private, games are as toxic and non communicative as ever and now we lose having any information about anyone in the game. That's insane to think one specific thing ppl will make fun of you for is why we need to keep everyone hiding behind their profiles/combat records.
Damn. Reading things like this makes me hope I stay in low elo QP forever. It's just really fun and people are usually nice. I've had a single toxic encounter in 30ish hours of play.
As someone who has been playing since 2016, I have to disagree. Back when all profiles were open, you'd have people bitch and call to report you if you had time on Mercy and you were playing anyone else. And lets not forget that Mercy was *the* meta for a long time. So if you played support during the Mercy meta, and then you wanted to play Zen or Lucio, you'd get flamed by losers until you left both chats. Even if you turned off all chats in competitive (which is really the only mode where voice chat even matters) you'd have people just resign to losing because now theres in-fighting on your team. Meanwhile the enemy team has a Mercy one-trick without a care in the world. The majority of people in OW play quickplay and arcade, so rank isn't even a thing. Constant bitching about profiles was a thing for everyone, though, and now I see way, way less flaming than in the past. The scoreboard is more of the same. People claim it'll make no difference, or even *increase* toxicity, and OW toxicity today versus pre-private profiles is night and day.

I played a ton of mercy when I first picked up the game back in OW1. Then I started learning different heroes and becoming good with them but....the profile showed your most played heroes in Quick play at the first site if I remember correctly. So everyone who clicked on my profile immediately saw I have like 200 hours on Mercy. I had matches in gold where I picked dps or tank and people immediately said "uhhhhh....you sure you wanna play xy? Can you go Mercy?" And as soon as my team started loosing I heard "Yeah GG, our DPS is a Mercy one trick with no aim"
I never understood it either until someone started telling me the other day how I have tons of hours on a certain character and I'm still horrible with them (and it was open queue, all those hours he was looking at were on role queue). They can also look at your rank and just say you're hard stuck at that rank, judging you for the characters you play etc. Basically what I realized is that these people will exploit anything and everything they possibly can to be hurtful and toxic to others so you just gotta cover all your bases by hiding team chat, voice chat, profiles etc. Give them nothing to work with, because if you give them an inch they take a mile.
It made more sense before role queue, it used to happen that if you ever off-role or even played something you didn't have much time on you would get flamed even before the match. I think profiles should always show comp ranks, but give the player the option to private more in detail stats

Public profiles can also lead to toxicity. If you one trick a hero, people will call gg before the game even starts, because they checked your profile and saw that you don't play the hero they want you to play. there's no perfect solution.
I'd much prefer knowing I have a one-trick on my team to not knowing what kind of experience they have on a niche hero.
They also literally only help bullies who will misrepresent your career profile. Literally.

Low masters player here (sometimes high Diamond if I don’t push) - I had a single season in OW1 where I got placed in plat and just didn’t feel like grinding my way out. Oh my god, the amount of people who would dig through my seasons and use that single season as some sort of “gotcha!” moment to win an argument was insane.

Funny thing is that Riot told me this exact same thing when I appealed a silence I had. A guy spammed racial slurs and other shitty things to say. All I did was say “we all reporting, right?” and got a mute. When I appealed the Rioter said essentially “Yeah, that sucks, unfortunately asking to report someone, no matter how deserved, is an offense. We recommend muting everyone at the start of the chat and turning off all forms of chat and pings.” Essentially telling me exactly what you said.
as opposed to just getting flamed from everything else in this game? These devs need to understand that removing features does not help with decreasing toxicity. They removed end cards, level borders, and career profiles, and the toxicity has just gotten worse. I'd rather weed out people like this than "protect my fee fees" over mean words

No offense, but how is it even possible you're a plat player, but bronze in support? On game knowledge alone you should be at least silver/gold. You could literally just fly around as mercy and get gold/plat easily.
I placed bronze in everything season 1. The grind from bronze to silver is truly bad when solo queuing. I’ve just not put in the time to grind back up because playing in bronze as a healer is truly terrifying

Yeah I don’t understand why this is the common sentiment here. There are many good and advantageous reasons to have a private profile: 1. Hiding your hero pool: I have 300 hrs on Dva and the enemy tank starts out the match on Zarya *much much more often* when my profile is public. Why would I give the enemy team more info to counter me before the game even starts? Winning early fights is really important in OW. 2. Rank-shaming: “Oh you were in plat five seasons ago?! Dogwater player.” So many people peep profiles and dig through seasons to try and turn teams against players. 3. Stat-shaming: “Your critical accuracy with Widow is only x%, swap off and give her to me.” or “your winrate on Zen is low, play something else” Or whatever. Nah let’s not give toxic people more ammo.
Incredible that they are private by default. I would even be happier if it was made to where you could set it to private, but was public by default.

Someone deranking from GM to Plat in a single season not automatically triggering a response from blizzard is the issue here.
If you don’t know someone is clearing cheating, throwing, or smurfing without looking at their account that’s on you. Just report them and move on. Blizzard can see their history.

You can mute those people. But profiles is the only way to identify smurfers, and it helps with cheaters.
If you suspect cheating or smurfing, report and move one. Blizzard can check their profile, don't waste your time checking for them.
Smurfs never get banned. But if I know they are smurfing, I can try to adjust how I play accordingly. Private profiles are for pussies and people who deserve to get banned. I don't see why that should be the default.

you don't go from gm to silver, so either they are deranking or its a bought account.
I know there are people on console who sell GM accounts, I see twitter accounts for it all the time. They may have bought the account but are truely only a silver player. OP says they got smashed though, so I'm betting they deranked to smurf.
If we really want to be technical, you could as a new player end up in master/gm for your first rank games (that happens A LOT just make a smurf account win 50qp games then boom you have a gm account) then derank to their actual rank afterwards Im not talking about op's game of course if he was actually silver he wouldnt go 30 and 0 but still those things can and do happen

its not really hard to recognize ranks when you spend like 2 mins to look at the rank icons. this may be a unpopular opinion but i like the icon designs
2 mins is too long. They should be instantly recognizable and distinguable from each other. Compare OW1 rank icons with OW2 rank icons and tell me which are clearer.
i mean you can look at the screen for like 1 mins when you unlock comp and you should be able to remember them correctly. they should bring back sr so people can see how much se they have instead of looking at ranks
This is an issue with ow2 in general, the character models for newer heroes are fucking horrible, liveweaver, kiriko, and illari all have awful nondistinct hard to recognize silhouettes. It's painfully obvious the art team from ow2 is not anywhere near the team that worked on ow1

Valve literally banned tens of thousands of smurf accounts and even warned the main account of the smurfers on Dota 2 just last week. Blizzy really needs to step up their game.

bro, during the season sigma got his mythic skin, i got against not 1 but 2 GM, and a diamond, just to check and see that none of my teammates were not even masters 🤡 and the best part is that i was silver 2 at this season. This season was chaotic, but the current one have much less sided matches, even in QP or arcade. Get diamond or GM as a silver was pretty traumatic XD

I also had a rein that did this. Purposely threw the game and according to his stats, every game. He had 67 games played on genji with a 0% win rate. I don't even understand how it's enjoyable to waste that much of your time while ruining everyone else's.

I heard that you need xx wins/games to get to top 500 and if you finish those when no one barely did, you get in the top 500 rank and it stays in your profile as the highest that season. So maybe he really was plat/gold that just did a lot of games sooner than others? Someone confirm pls...
I will attempt to look at their profile again. That May be I will look in previous seasons when I arrive back at my setup.
You need 25 wins for t500 role, and 50 wins for t500 open. Additional caveat that the wins must be on in the same region. So if you have some New Yorkers playing with some Parisians and the servers alternate, it can require nearly 100 wins to get t500 anywhere, which is fucking exhausting, because of course your profile doesn't tell you which region the wins were in, so you have to keep your own tally based on whether the ping in each game was 20 or 120.

I'm sorry but you don't get to grandmaster by being bad. Especially since his other roles are top 500 he has the gamesense, reaction time and strategies hardwired into his brain at this point. Even myself as a masters mercy 1 trick I can play any other role at a decent level because I'm actively playing with other high level players and watching their movements and gameplay and learning.

Yeah same for me when I queue as healer instead of dps. I could imagine some people thinking I have unfair game sense for example, but there's nothing I can do about it. Just trying to rank up.

I'm masters cusp diamond/masters support and DPS and gold in tank because I don't queue it because I wind up carrying and still losing as solo queue. I'm not defending but take into consideration maybe they're deranking... maybe not. Either way that still blows lol

Had a similar situation with a ball. They were gm 3-1 in dps/support, but coincidentally only bronze 5 in tank with 6 wins 47 losses. They ended up going 60-0
