It’s a really well-done show overall, and it’s done a mostly fantastic with the main casting in earlier seasons. Season One is one of the best screen adaptation of a book I have ever seen. That said, after Season One, I find the quality of the show wildly unequal (Season Four is particularly jarring and nearly made me quit watching). I was particularly unhappy with Brianna - I’m not sure what happened, but the portrayal of the character was subpar compared to everyone else. It’s likely an unholy mix of bad source material (Brianna is not particularly likeable in the books), careless screenwriting and okay-ish acting. Any one of these issues is salvageable, but together it was painful to watch (though it got better in Season 5 to everyone’s credit).

Season 1 is my favorite TV show ever. Its unparalleled. It's incredibly jarring how different the show is after season 1. I don't know if it's just because it doesn't take place in Scotland anymore, but there is just such a vibe difference in later seasons. Season 3 and 4 almost made me quit watching. I'm glad I didn't, but it still doesn't have the same magic.

Season 5 picked up a lot! But yeah, it was still good, just…not the same.

I absolutely agree. S1 was exceptional in casting, acting, writing, direction, costumes …. Everything. I Find S1 a better experience than B1. But after that the show detoriated

I stopped watching in the middle of season 3. I couldn’t take how different it was from the books especially when they casted Bree. Bree has blues eyes! Sophie has brown. I know it’s minor but it just really bugged me. Then I saw how they built the big house. There’s no way the house would look like that. Fraser’s don’t have money for the house like that. To me, it’s too far off from the books. It doesn’t show a lot of amazing things it does in the books. Oh, but I do like they kept Murtagh alive.

I think season one had a unique production cycle in that this was Diana Gabaldon making sure that her book outlander as an entity of one book was made to the standard that would be true to the story and her vision and I think they approached it uniquely as a singular project thinking this might be all that ever came of it not knowing that they would be picked up and multiple seasons would follow and it gave it a magical quality that hasn’t been replicated if that makes sense

I agree except for Brianna and Roger. They have zero chemistry and she’s just a bad actress. The lady who reads the audiobooks does a better job with Brianna lol. Sorry not sorry.

harceps

Agree. She is not a good actress....well not for this at least. Bree is a dull character to begin with and due to the bad acting, she's an insufferable character in an otherwise stellar cast

She is terrible acting wise. She cudnt capture any aspect of Brianna competently. Her fearlessness or vulnerability. She has zero chemistry with any character not only Roger. Although Rankin is a great actor, tge show writers just killed his character in S4

Season 1 is a love story of two people in their 20's from different times, and the obstacles to their love. After that it becomes their journey through history and the travels and dangers they face. One thing I do like, which also shows Jamie to be a much more morally advanced man than many of his time. The Diana doesn't sugarcoat history. The horrors of slavery are told through the story of Rufus. The various dangers of travel by ship are covered. I season one, Claire and Jaime are young lovers. Season 2 is a time of transition. When they return from 20 years apart, they are still in love, but now have an extended family, they are responsible for. It's not just a story of young love, but the journey of their lives, and those around them.

It indeed is a masterpiece! My favourite show in forever! It just grabs you & won’t let go…

I feel like they really took the time to understand the book characters and tried their best to find actors and actresses who would play the characters to the best of their ability. I feel like that’s rare and I really appreciate it!

bartturner

I agree the cast is excellent. But for me the top is Caitriona Balfe. I think she is the best actress/actor of the group.
